In order to better leverage the latest research and new treatments, physicians who are also scientists work to combine the care and empathy of personal care with robust scientific research to develop better treatments and save lives. The Physician-Scientist workforce has been declining, and we need to change that trend in order to solve human deceases.
Dianna Milewicz, MD, PhD, is the President George H.W. Bush Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine, Director of the Division of Medical Genetics and Vice-Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She is currently Director of an NIH-funded Specialized Center of Clinically Oriented Research in Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms and Dissections and Chairman of the Thoracic Aortic Disease Coalition, which is a collaboration among patient-advocate organizations, the AHA, and the American College of Cardiologists to increase public awareness of the risk factors and symptoms of life-threatening acute aortic dissections. She has received numerous honors and awards for her research, including the Antoine Marfan Award, the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, and the University of Texas Presidential Scholars Award for Excellence in Research.

my dream is to become a physician scientist because at my early age i was exposed to things that the biochemistry of life has a lot of questions that never been solved until now and i'm currently a first year medical student trying hard to have good grades to be accepted in PhD program in the future. im not a smart student but at least i am trying hard.

This talk is a keeper to help raise awareness. I had a type A dissection July 2013. I had genetic testing with Dr Pyeritz of U Penn, and although inclusive, it seemed clear to Dr Pyeritz that there was a genetic component. When my brother dissected in December, 2015, I contacted the Ritter Foundation, and we both have been tested. I hope that will add to the pool of knowledge to prevent more untimely deaths.

Excellent speach. Thank you for all you do for all with this deadly disease, and for all those who still are not acute ill. Hugs and love from Sweden. (Timo, acute AD type I oct 2012)

One thing I can say as a clinical researcher. Low pay compared to practitioners. That's why most MDs choose to practice than pursue medical or clinical science research. Research funding, too, becomes a problem right now as slowly becomes political rather than a national necessity.
