Gauge rhymes with "cage". Not sure why you are pronouncing it like that. It annoyed me throughout a video that I was genuinely interested in.

Are you sure that roman carriages were so highly uniform in dimensions that one would derive a gauge of 4' 8 1/2" from them, which is not a nice round number neither in imperial units nor in the metric system (1435 mm)? Another explanation I heard was, that in the early days of modern railroading, when they experimented with the first steam locos, they had no idea that this would become such a big thing that interoperability between different railroad companies and manufacturers would become important, and that the inner gap between the rails would be the relevant distance to standardize. Instead, they just had ordered ties (sleepers) that were 5 feet long (a nice round number) from the wood mill and then somehow attached the rails to them, more or less randomly leading to a gauge somewhat smaller than 5 feet. Competing inventors and companies used different gauges. Once they had figured out that gauge should be standardized, they just took the gauge that had the widest prevalence at that time.

Through my research I couldn’t find one exact answer, while George Stephenson definitely had a hand to play in standardizing it , there isn’t one known reason where the exact dimension came from

@@GeoNerd. I do not know a definitive answer, either. However, if the British government had made a ruling about gauges (based on the dimension of carriages or whatnot), this probably could be found in the archives. I've read the story (or legend) linking railway gauges (and as an extension, even the dimensions of NASA's space shuttle booster rockets) to roman carriages already in the early 1990ies in the Usenet - without any reference to some archives or so. Repeating the story again and again and adding some stock photos to it does not make the story more (or less) true.

So a few things 1: its pronounced gaje or gage, not gouge 2: the golden gate bridge does not carry rail traffic 3: the tgv can actually reach 574kmh but would be too unstable for passenger operations. 4: the solarpowered trains are a cool concept, but their feasability is nonexistant compared to regular overhead powered trains

Thank you all of this, I’ll try answering by point too! 1. Yes, major error on my end, English isn’t my first language but I’ll for sure tighten up on my pronounciation! 2. You’re correct and that was an error in my scripting, while it’s been said they want to add them for over 50 years you’re right as of right there are no en I’ll skip the TGV part as a top speed that isn’t reachable, imo isn’t “true” And for the solarpowered trains, of course they are a concept and far from hitting the market anytime soon, I hope you could still enjoy the video! Thank you for taking the time with the additional info!

Railway gouge? Seriously, you have to get the fundamentals right or it makes me wonder what else you didn't get right. You say English is not your first language. In that case, use a dictionary to check your work. I am a native speaker who has to write and edit for work and I'm always checking dictionaries, grammar books and other resources. There is no shame in that. Good luck.

i would remaster this video pronouncing gauge correctly because i can see this annoying people and therefor ruining your retention. i recognise english isnt your first language which is impressive but these details matter to railfans. this was an interesting video though!

While it’s hard to have one definitive answer, throughout my research there has been many hypothesis, for sure the early British pioneers set the modern norm, but of course this video is a generalization for my English audience, the norm and it’s history is different across the world, I’d love though to hear your take, I’ve definitely made mistakes in the past and I’m all for learning a bit more!
