Rhubarb! Its leaves are certainly not toxic to those brilliant blue beetles that munch on it. It's also not toxic to rabbits. My rabbit farming book says that people who grow rhubarb commercially can feed the leaves to their farmed rabbits with no ill effects. My pet bunny loves them.

My mother makes stuffed steamed rhubarb rolls from the leaves and they're delicious!

Thanks. Using the leaves in my black swamp water fertilizer. So far so good....I think the heat and microbes break everything down very well.

This is a really well done video. Very academic, sadly this kind of approach doesn't get as many eyeballs because people generally don't like to think when doing a hobby. But what I can say is that you will build a niche that many others won't have. Good angle to start a channel and work from there.

We gave our neighbour some rhubarb and I did not take off the leaves. We did not see her for three days and on enquiring why she said she had boiled both up and was very ill with diarrhoea so be careful.

Yes, I think there is something in the leaves that isn't good to eat...actually I have noticed that if the leaves stay on the stalks for too long after harvesting the stalks go limp - a bit like carrots do - so best to cut them off immediately.

I've also heard the same thing, that small quantities of the leaves are fine and you may risk an upset stomach. However the real issue is that foods high in oxalic acid may contribute to one type of kidney stone (calcium oxalate stones). While this hasn't been conclusively proven yet, it's as good a reason as any not to go overboard with your total intake of those foods high in oxalic acid!

The leaves contain a lot of oxalates, it’s not poisonous to a normal person, but to a person who has issues with kidney stones. It’s best cooked before consumption.

I'm not surprised about throwing out the leaves but the stalks also? What do you eat the roots?
@homesteading
@homesteading 4 года назад
No the stalks are eaten. I was just clearing away the old ones. Better when young and juicey.

I think you hit the nail on the head. You’re not eating the compost so it’s irrelevant.

I def took a bite of a leave a time or 2 and def ate the shoots out of them. I can say it did not kill me what it did to me idk. never had anything happen that made me stop js. I was taught when I picked pieces to toss the leaf underneath them.

Tomato leaves are also toxic but certainly not toxic when they are composted down to add some great nutrition to plants.

@@homesteading good to know. I usually use bone,ash,chicken shit and small amounts of sulfur, lime,and whatever macronutrients I think I need. Do you ever foliar feed your fruit trees?

Lol 😂 I think my parents are immune to this because they eat the leaves every once in a while like maby 3 to 6 months apart

I watched this because investigating if rhubarb leaves can be used to wrap around a marinated fish or chicken, put clay on and on to the fire...?

Probably better to be cautious and use something else.
