Why Are So Many Airplanes Registered In Malta?

Pre-pandemic, Malta International Airport saw over seven million passenger movements. Handling some 97.5% of all inbound tourists arriving in Malta, this is clearly the primary facility for the tiny island nation of 525,000 inhabitants. However, despite the country's small size, Malta's aircraft registry lists far more airplanes than its relatively small international airport could handle on a regular basis- jets from Austria's Lauda and Portugal's Hi Fly are included. But why is this the case?

Both Malta and Bermuda have a huge number of cruise ships as well as aeroplanes registered there. I understood that both of those small countries were favoured because they are first world nations without the complex regulations that require armies of lawyers and accountants needed to register planes and ships in larger first world countries like Austria.

Well if it makes that much sense, why aren't all airlines registering their aircraft there?

@@Boxcarphilly Many leasing companies register their planes in Bermuda and as we saw in the video, Ryan Air subsiduaries register their planes in Malta. Much the same applies to passenger shipping lines. Cunard has ships registered in Hamilton, Bermuda and many large American cruise lines like Celebrity have Valletta, Malta painted on their sterrns. But many "national airliines" find it better for their image to register aircraft in their home country.

There’s also Isle of Man, a lot of the Private Aircraft are registered there with M-XXXX

actually, I think Austria is still better on the taxes compared to Germany or other big European countries, as Austria is still relatively small. Also, a lot of planes were registered in Austria, like easyJet Europe, Eurowings Europe, Lauda, etc. But it makes sense indeed for airlines to change it to different countries. Sad for me as an Austrian tho haha ;)

You should do a video about the airline “Highland Express” or the downfall of Prestwick airport

100%. EGPK is my local airport and as a former employee of Prestwick it would be good to see a video about it either on Simple Flying but preferably on Simple Flying Long Haul.

So that begs the question: if there are that many advantages to registering aircraft in Malta, why aren't more airlines doing it? I mean, the ones that aren't, there must be something attracting them to register their aircraft elsewhere, no?

Paying less tax is higher profit, is higher bonus for the CEO. Paying tax means that govrnments can use that money to invest in healthcare and schools, infrastructure etc.
