#Keybored Why Are Some Keyboards More Expensive? Featuring KBDFANS ODIN 1800
One thing that is more confusing than some others in this crazy Keyboard hobby is the price of the keyboards and keyboard components. Somethings seem pretty similar to each other, and claim to offer similar features, but the pricing is so vastly different... Why is that? I hope to explain a bit! And learn a bit about the science of finishing as well!

We did that elctro-chem metap coloring baths in chemistry when I was young, and I sucked at it :) cleaning and making sure you don’t get finger fats onto the metal is really important if you want good results. Can imagine this affecting yield or the level of worker training requires to operate.

Having a odin myself I have to agree what you said so far but It will be interesting to know whether quality or grade of the metal also used translate to different cost. I notice cheaper board tend to be lighter compared to more expensive board, however i dont see significant change in thickness or size. So does it mean it is not due to them using less material but maybe they use different quality aluminium. Which result in more ping and hollow sound on cheaper board. This will be more interesting dive indeed. Honestly enjoy you educational content lately. Please keep it coming.

If you work at it, you can get much better deals than the odin. For example, take a ymdk melody 96 and oring mount the pcb to the case, add foam, and you have something ̶j̶u̶s̶t̶ ^ nearly as good as the Odin for less than half the price.

12:07 Anodization can't be removed with oven cleaner, but it can be removed with Whink rust stain remover, commonly used as a toiler cleaner. Whink uses a low concentration of hydrofluoric acid, which removes oxidation. It is an extremely dangerous acid, so process with caution if you decide to use it, but it is a cheap, and easy process. Just let the aluminum part sit full submerged in a bath of Whink for a few minutes, brushing it off every few minutes to help break the dye loose. Definitely don't use it indoors, because the fumes produces are very toxic. If you use Whink, wear thick nitrile gloves (they have to be nitrile, hydrofluoric acid will eat through most other types of gloves), and a respirator. It will take several minutes, so be patient.

A general note about sound, though obviously it’s subjective: I think all the work and engineering put into dampening a metal case’s natural metal sound is removing some essential character for the board. I guess my line of thinking is why buy a metal case if I don’t want it to SOUND like metal? I’m waiting for my MOD003 to arrive, so I’ll hear it for myself when it comes, but I would like for it to have metallic characteristics to the sound and feel.
@Keybored
@Keybored 2 года назад
You make a great point! One thing about a metallic case is that there are both desirable and also undesirable sounds. So it would be good to keep all the desirable sounds and filter out the undesirable through the case modding.

14:15 "Charge the case with either positive or negative energy" While I understand that you are trying to tone down the technical terms, I think it would be better to stay true to those terms, and give a brief explanation if you feel the need. Changing the terms like this made it more confusing to me, like when you mentioned electromagnetism I was expecting to see some current passing through that generates a magnetic field or maybe an actual magnet being used, then I got confused when I didn't see any magnets. In this instance I'd just stick with positive/negative "charge" rather than energy.

Paint isn't a process that has inherent "low batch consistency", or really any of the other "cons" you attribute to it. If so, factory car paint would be terrible too. And house paint. And fingernail polish. Etc. In a given manufacturing or finishing process, the thing that drives cost MOST is QUALITY CONTROL. One method might be more expensive than another, true, but after you choose the method, it is QC that determines the cost. Paint on a keyboard can be super-high quality, hard to scratch, consistent from board to board, tough as nails, etc. But if the manufacturer doesn't want to take the time or expense to do painting the QUALITY way, then the result will be not-great. Same thing with ano. We see keeb reviews all the time where the ano is inconsistent on the piece, or a slightly different color between the top piece and the bottom piece, etc. A lot of times, a given method in and of itself isn't inferior to some other method. It all has to do with the execution.

As a detail oriented person who's new to custom keyboards, I really like the technical deep dives. Love all the videos I've seen so far and will definitely keep watching 🤠

Ayo this board is nice! Really nice from Kbdfans their new budget tkl board also looks nice.I love the 1800 layout its iconic and a good layout overall. A review on some Leopold prebuilds would be cool.
