Why Are Some Stores Locking Up Ice Cream? 

I thought it was locked up because of the people that were going in the store and licking it and putting it back. Didn’t expect a normal crime like shoplifting to be the culprit. Pleasantly surprised 😭

You know we're screwed when not even Ice Cream is safe anymore.

When I saw the video title, I thought of the ignorant people licking ice cream and putting it back.

This happens when you don't punish criminals or worse glamorize criminals as victim.

I never thought all the years that I live that people will be stealing ice cream

It is a shame because it affects people that don’t steal as well. I went to Walmart the other day, and I had to wait 20 minutes for someone to unlock the makeup just so I could get an eyeliner pencil. It’s puts extra work on the employees too. It’s so sad.

Who in the right mind is going to buy ice cream from a random stranger off the street?

Happened in our area. The store owner decided to put the freezer behind the counter and made a menu and posted it behind the counter. So people could choose from the menu. If the product isn’t in stock the put a red magnetic X over it. The rule is now you have to pay first before the ice cream is handed to you. The cash register is behind bullet proof glass and they hand it you through a slot

This is insane. So sad. I went to target a while ago and literally half the stuff I needed was locked up. It’s not even worth going so I just get from Amazon now.

It's a Catch-22. Locking stuff up also deters legitimate buyers from buying the product because they don't want to go through the extra hassle of asking to get it unlocked. Then the stores end up with heaps of merchandise going stale that they end up having to sell at steep discounts because it's going bad and they need to clear the shelves...

What's sad is that people have accepted this as the new normal. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY. We don't have to accept it. We don't have to get used to it.

Rather than punish the thieves they punish the customers. Ridiculous!

The price they’re asking for ice cream is the real crime.

Our grocery liquor store is completely locked down now, even in a super safe neighborhood. Pretty sad state of affairs.

Not the world. America primarily. At least here in Europe we have security guards that do their job and WILL take you down if you steal. I have seen an attempt once in a mall and the shoplifter was stopped quite quickly, then when they refused to be thoroughly searched, they were led to the back

Don't be surprised when all stores will stop people coming in to shop & have to order your groceries & have to pick it up or delivered & yes you will have to pay more for it

The obvious true reason is that some states aren't punishing shoplifters; in some cases, enabling them.

I'll be honest, like everyone else, I thought they were locking the ice cream up because people were opening, licking and putting them back. I did not expect that there was an actual black market for ice cream. You learn something new every day.

The minute something is locked up, the thieves move on to something else. It really sucks.

This doesn't happen in the world like what the last lady claimed lol. Only in America. In developed Asian countries like Japan and Korea, they even have unmanned stores where customers just do self-check out.

I love ice cream but I can’t imagine going into my local store and having to get the ice cream unlocked every time I want some😅

We don’t need locks we need the criminals to go to jail and think about what they did

The U.S needs to make people fear the law, it’s the only way to stop this violence. For too long the law has been too nice.

There needs to be harsher penalties for shoplifting. Like 1000 hours of community service, for example.

As lockpicking lawyer’s wife has demonstrated, this kind of lock won’t stop a determined person from cutting the pint open from the bottom. So if people don’t mind doing so they’ll still get ice cream this way.

Crazy to see this happen in the US. I'm Kenyan and can't imagine having ice cream locked like that. Even painkillers aren't locked😅 Mass shoplifting isn't a thing here though

I believe stores may eventually resort to having people choose items on an app, pay for it and pick it up ...or wait till their order is filled while in tye store? This stealing is repulsive behavior and new laws need to be created and enforced to deal with it

Haagen Dazs "pints" aren't even a pint anymore because of shrinkflation. They shrunk it from 16 ounces to 14 ounces which doesn't sound like much but over time that is a massive loss. I worked for Stop and Shop for more than a year and people also buy it whenever it's on sale to re-sell it at their bodegas.

As a locksmith, I stand with the stores locking up ice creams. Now onto locking the next grocery item!

I foresee no one being allowed to shop for items in-store. It will be automated and you’ll select what you want, and a machine will race through smaller aisles, grabbing groceries and returning to the checkout stand where you’ll approve the list and pay. No more theft.

This is a lose lose situation. Where I live people stop shopping at the stores who lock up everything because they don’t want to go through the hassle of hunting someone down to unlock the item. Some people with social anxiety like myself even find it somewhat humiliating to have to do. You’re losing more money than the robberies most likely.

This is ridiculous; who would do something like this?!!! Make things more expensive/difficult for the honest, working person that can barely make ends meet!

Not to mention there’s also nasty people who take pints of ice cream then lick it then put it back in the fridge. That should be another reason why they put locks on the the freezers

It's not surprising to me. I have purchased ice cream twice in the last year only to get home and find some of it missing. I now open my ice cream to check and make sure it's all there before I buy it. I won't mind locked lids. That said, if society continues in it's inevitable "melt down" as it is doing, I might have to look into ordering my foods through a company like Azure Standard.

Says a lot about how crappy the world has gotten. I didn’t realize that even ice cream isn’t immune. I guess basically anything that isn’t bolted down is open season.

Well about time they should do it with all ice cream one it will prevent idiots opening them up either licking them or eating them and possibly lacing them with drugs or other things so big companies can fit the bill for lawsuits

Just punish the thieves. It's not so complicated. Stores have cameras on, so they should have a "no entry for this person" sign or something instead of punishing the customers and making work harder for the employees.

I did Walmart delivery. And two of my items were already opened my Starbucks espresso coffee and my daughter's yogurt. I disposed of it and felt absolutely disgusted

But yet when employees attempt to stop shoplifting they get fired. It's like department stores sided with the shoplifters and fronted the bill to the employees and customers.

I would rather buy all my stuff on Amazon than have to hunt down an associate to "unlock" what I am trying to buy.

The prices they charge for those in convenience stores is unreal

Seen shoplifting for years but to this extent - usually the sick on the street doing it ! We have security in our stores now !

Price gouging causing artificial inflation and the FTC failing us is what is driving all of this

In my country it is literally butter and eggs that get magnetic stripes as an extra percussion against shoplifting.

It's really simple. You start having harsher punishments in the United States for even small crimes....and IT WILL STOP.

I would just put some trackers on some ice creams which I'd remove at checkout. And for those that didn't come to checkout, file a police report and see which store they end up at and get that store charged.

The most convenient way to shop is to do curbside pick up these days. The store doesn’t have to worry about theft and you don’t need to spend time shopping and getting workers to unlock things.

The logical end to all of this is to go back to the way that stores were run before the advent of the supermarket. You'd walk in give you list to a clerk and he/she fills the order with out you ever handling the products yourself. Even more likely is you'd place your order on line or thru and app and just go pick it up. Never actually entering the store. Then the store wouldn't need all of customer space and fancy displays. It would basically be a local warehouse that would give immediate access to products delivered to your car while you wait.

We don't have to lock our ice cream up in Iowa because we prosecute our criminals.

Theft should be punishable by the price of the item. A day for every dollar up to 100 dollars after that one month for every 1k. Steal that Kia gets you 20 months in jail. That will stop all theft

This is ridiculous. So embarrassing and unfair to people who have money to shop at these stores. You have to look over your shoulder, because the store owner with stereotype you as one of those people who steal. I don’t go shopping unless I have money to buy the items. I find this to be disgraceful for innocent people.

Why not just lock up the entire store at that point?

Selling stuff to bodegas was something we learned as kids in ny. Batteries, visine, ace body spray , advil, whitening strips and small bottles of listerine were the big sellers.

I see that. Even Tiktok trend of eating food in the store too. It's not expensive to buy cheap icecream. Aldi sell 12 bars boxes for less than $5 and you can resell them in the street

What good is having an employee unlock the door going to do? If a thief is determined enough they’ll snatch everything and run with the employee standing right there. That’s unless the employee is willing to risk his or her own safety over a bunch of merchandise. I like the idea of the locking lids better. Only unlock them after they’ve been paid for.

From a different perspective, it also says a lot about how difficult life is today. I'm not saying that the crime is justified but I am saying that this is the unfortunate reaction to corporate greed. Companies today become increasingly aggressive with securing their profits that the regular citizens struggle to afford living.

This is so sad.

I walked into my local target to pick up some essential items along with a few snacks. Everything I needed down to the damn ice cream was locked up. I could barely find an available employee to unlock anything. Once I realized almost all the items I needed were locked up, I got so frustrated. That I just walked out the damn store went to a different store. Got what I couldn't wait on ordered everything else online.

Not at all saying that Canada is that great I've lived here my entire life but nothing like this even remotely close to this happens here in Canada we don't lock up store products unless they're high-end Electronics that's the only things you see locked up here in Canada but that's been like that most of my life I'm 43.🤷‍♂️🙂👍✌️

If something is locked up I don't buy it and shop somewhere else. Their loss. This is ridiculous.

I was in Las Vegas two months ago, the CVS stores were installing locks for all item.

For our safety, it should've been under lock and key a long time ago! They have no concern over public health, just the companies wealth!

Smaller cities/towns don't have this yet. I assume the criminals will move down to the smaller locations until eventually these types of security measures become universal. Very sad.

This is why I order online, then go pick it up. I don't have to worry about things being locked up.
