Why are there So Few Black Farmers in America?

Senator Bernie Sanders

In 1910 black farmers made up 14% of all farmers. Today they make up fewer than 2% and own less than 1% land in rural America. Land access for all is a social justice issue. We need to support black farmers so that they have the resources they need to keep and grow their farms and land-based businesses.

One of the MAJOR reasons I supported Sen Sanders was his eagerness and history to take on Big Ag and the pesticides industry, restore our water security and bring back the sustainable Family Farm, including those belonging to Black & indigenous peoples.

Mainly Black people, very small number of White farmers loss their land due to farm loans. We need to focus on the discrimination being placed on Black people in this country when we see videos like this. Poverty is a separate evil that needs to be addressed. Lumping in poor people is watering down the outright evil of systemic racism Black people have faced till this day.

Did you know that before he decided to run he said that he would not run if someone else ran that had a progressive platform. Tulsi enters the race, also supposedly, his friend. He enters anyway. I asked him at the time, why? Why would you enter after her and derail her chances? No answer. Tulsi quit her job at the DNC because they were cheating Bernie on 2016. She defended him during this campaign when he would not even defend himself. Bernie has earned the disdain of the people for the approval of the political class. He is nothing to the political class. When Hillary and Nera Tanden say "people don't like him" they are talking about the political class in Washington. They will never respect him. Now he deserves all the disdain he gets from the masses. I hope he gets A LOT. A true traitor to the cause.

@White & Proud Of It I have a 34 year old disabled stepson that dose that same thing, make everything about him no matter how irrational. The only people (and it’s not just white people) people that have been demonized are those that are racist that destroy lives to promote their own power and self-importance. No one ever said you couldn’t have an opinion and express it just as everyone else has a right to respond to that opinion. And saying you are standing for my rights is like saying you gave a black friend. You stand for no one but yourself and the group you see yourself as associated with and if that’s hate towards a specific group that you should be proud of it. If you are offended by the name given to people like that than you are the one with the problem.

Is Bernie Sanders still opposed to reparations for American descendants of slavery? If so, what’s the point of creating this video?
@lucywarner7031
@lucywarner7031 4 года назад
To me, it's a matter of what "reparations" would look like. If it's a thousand or two dollars check in every black person's mailbox, it wouldn't do much good. If it is scholarships, that would be helpful in a real way. If it's a free subscription to the Internet and a free computer, that would be good, too. Reparations should not just be a symbolic gesture, which is what I think might happen. The way Democrats think about black people was demonstrated when Biden said, "Poor people are just as smart as white kids." Embarrassing as that is, it is a widely held view. People think that way because it's easier than learning more on the subject of poverty and more deeply thinking things out. I'm all for reparations if it is worth something in a practical sense. If it isn't, then it's just another expensive political charade. Just my opinion.

I am not a farmer. However, even I remember the family farms disappearing in mass in the 1980's, remember farm aid? Agribussiness has taken over and that is not going to change. My farmer relatives who have since sold or lease their land, stated to me that unless you have a minimum of 1,000 acres and run an efficient opperation you can not be competitive in the business, period. There is no place in the business for utopian fantasy, unless of course you have bushels of other peoples money to spend. As a long time former supporter of Mr. Sanders, a candidate who folded to easily when he could have made a real difference , I find this rather maudlin video disingenuous at best.

Note: I am not against GMOs. I am a man who believes in science . I am however against predatory capitalist corporations who stomp all over the working class and the small farmers. Climate change is going to kill of the rest of us small farmers, I hope like hell we can hold on, the cooperative has worked well for about 40 years, but the environment is getting so bad that it’s getting really difficult to plant the crops and we are losing our efficiency the cooperative gave us. Thank goodness the way it works is we have a fund set aside for bad years. So as long as we can at least do decent every other year we can hang on, but I believe that’s going to become impossible in the next 10 years and I’m really concerned about our food situation in the future. If we don’t get rid of capitalism and make some major changes a ton of people are going to end up dying over the next 100 years.

Hand back the @16million acres of land to those decendents widely but if not then hold the land in trust for ALL African Americans in those regions living there and paying taxes or who are children over the age of 18 yrs old who live in those regions. To be honest it all the land belongs to the native American Indians so no white or black person lawfully gained it unless they purchased it from a native American chief in the 15th century.. or prior to the formation of India reserves. I adopted the view that ALL land held by the US Federal or State Government is stollen land and since ALL private land was once owned by the above and then sold it is stollen goods, when all is said and done. So all land must be returned to Native Americans and held in trust for the identified nations that signed treaties with the US and are no known as reserves. The leaders of these reserves must be elected to be Trustees and be a part of the Treasury department of the Government of these reserves. From this great wealth transfer the trustee will have to lease back the land to the previous owners who were once freeholders. The existing owners will be liable for any and all mortgages or liens over the land and any sub-lease will fall under the new freeholder's of the land. When sub-leases end they will revert back to the ownership AND possession of the nations. When leases end they will revert back to the nations. When mortgages or liens on the land ends the nations will not have the land unless the leaseholder sells them the lease or the lease ends and is not renewed. If the lease is renewed, the existing freeholder must renew on open market terms and conditions with the reservation trustees who are the freeholder. In this way the nations hall regain their land on equitable terms which is far from how white founding fathers of America got it 😳😬😒😕 The current freeholders maybe Government or private citizen or body corporate or Trust or charity. After my suggested bill goes into law at the Federal level all these parties will all be leaseholder and the freehold is gifted back to the appropriate nations that would have historically occupied the land as far has can be accurately determined in an undisputed manner. If disputed by facts and not hear-say the land will not revert until the dispute is resolved my historical independent facts. A commission will be setup comprising of all the leading historians from the nations and from US accedemia and to setup a historical land survey which then creates a historically sudo-map of fixed occupation of lands that were culturally common hold land shared by nomadic native tribes. If those tribes still exists and are not part of a reservation then the gifted land will be made into a reservation for the Governance of the nation that must elect a leadership to take stewardship and manage and protect the reserve. Ps. This is how America fully address its history; the Afro-American slave and his decendents will have to wait in second place. I am a black man by the way...Texan.

@Nathan There were discussion about this. Look at the videos with discussions. As I understood it. It is difficult who has right and on how much. Same with indigious people. So the plans now are way more practical and create a systematic better future for the whole community. Marianne Williamson is for payout. But even she has not a real plan on the how to do it. I think Bernie ideas are a good start. The payout can still come. Progress goes always in steps. And one step does not mean to exclude the next step.
