Why Are There So Many Iranians In Los Angeles? [Becoming Iranian-American, Pt. 1] | AJ+

Los Angeles is home to the largest community of Iranians outside of Iran. But what are the origins of this slice of Iran in America, aka “Tehrangeles”?
Watch Part 2: • Being Iranian In LA.: ...
When the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis happened, Iranians in the United States endured a period of immense anti-Iranian sentiment. They were protested, beaten - even their immigration status was threatened.

Growing up in Los Angeles, one of my on going memories of Iranians/Persians in the garment district in Santee Alley was how much they chain smoked AND how friendly they are. The statement, "my friend," was constantly said to us Mexicans who went shopping there. "Hello, my friend! What can I get you, my friend!"

As an Iranian who lives in Canada I can relate. I travelled to Canada about two years ago, I was being told many many bad things in college. For example I’ve been called bomber, go back to your country and many worse things. @@pepper2240 I was uncertain that I could answer this question truthfully until today, monday, after I spoke to our integration lawyer.. I'm sad to say that there are many "new" or renewed restrictions on Iranian nationals and citizens wishing to enter the USA - legally. However, if you claim asylum citizenship from Iran, you will be granted immediate citizenship. (I know the irony in that, but that is how the US statute is written, according to my immigration lawyer.) Best of luck, truly.)

I can only speak from personal experience. I was a young woman in London & met many Iranian families who'd fled from Iran after the Shah had been deposed. They were gentle, kind, intelligent & well educated people. The professional classes. They were devastated at what they thought was a massive backward step in their country & wept for their beautiful country. They had lost so much, yet they remained optimistic. I know most either stayed in London or moved to the US. Certainly far, far nicer than the violent thugs invading Europe.

Someone who was advising Khomeini must have told him attack American on American soil and they go pigwild. I remember during the hostage crisis the constant moaning of when Carter was going to take military action? and when Saddam finally sent in the Iraqi army people all over America were cheering , even college students formed Saddam Hussein fan clubs, nobody ever bothered to tell them Iraq was a Soviet client state like Cuba. I also remember my grandmother watching it all and sighing it was all like after the attack on Pear Harbor in 1941. 40 yrs have shown President Carter was right to pursue a diplomatic solution.

I love Mashti Malone's. A typical weekend trip to Los Angeles for us might include a meal at Awash Ethiopian cuisine then a stop at Mashti Malone's on the way back to the 101. Growing up in the Los Angeles area, with so many Persian/Iranian friends, there didn't seem to be anything "other" about them. Great video in pointing out the discrimination my friends' families faced and I wasn't even aware of.

Very touched by your excellent series. Especially by your father and how torn he felt about his dual loyalties. Nothing wrong with being American of Iranian origin! Loved all the food you showed. What's a culture of if not for the food?? Best part was that you showed all faiths of one culture and the love and respect the people felt for their origins, while at the same time blending into the modern culture of America. You did great in portraying all that! Bravo!

So many immigrate and make their home in Los Angeles. Torrance, my hometown, was home to the second highest population of Japanese outside of Japan. Second to Hawaii only. Growing up, my best friends was a family that immigrated from Samoa. Our favorite place to eat is this Korean BBQ place in Torrance that we grew up with. My schools were always diverse. Myself, I'm half Mexican half French. I remember when my family took a family trip to the East Coast. My mom was forced into an existential crisis when we couldn't find a single grocery store that sold tortillas in Pennsylvania. LA is the true melting pot of the US. More so than NY.

There was always so much hate, racism, division, and social separation in our country and the political chaos we've been seeing the past couple years is only a result of the combination of our historical failures. I remember growing up in the 80's how my own fellow white Americans only ostracized me, beat me up, call me derogatory names, and just were mean separatists trying to get people criminalized for no reason other than I wasn't from their town. The failure in diversity represents the failure in the traditional European white establishment which will come to a head one day in full blown devastating civil war for we needed a genuine democracy without the unlimited lobbying and massive financial corruption instead of a big banana republic causing all the division. It's rather ironic that the immigrant nation didn't ever make a genuine attempt at diversity and inclusion for it was just about money and this selfish me me me, get out of my way, I'm better than you, I'll take you out, kind of nonsense. I've wished for a long time that there was a two way immigrant program where for each one that comes here, allow a US citizen to be hosted by their mother country to try out for citizenship. Instead of meaningful exchange programs, the Western countries just filled up with non-Westerners seeking opportunity to ensure order out of chaos nonsense. America is just about over...

What ethnicity are you?
@alicen2610
@alicen2610 6 лет назад
Scott Bixler sorry to hear that. I am not sure where you live, but the US is very different in each region and between cities and rural. The experience of non-whites in NYC and LA will be different than in a smaller city or rural area that is predominately white, though honestly, if you are a visible minority in an enclave in the US, you can also experience racism from those who aren't white. That said, most of human history we existed in small tribes with those most like ourselves and had to be careful around other tribes, sometimes there would be conflict or murders between them. I think this has hardcoded us to by default to be untrusting and fearful of those we think aren't enough like us. I think solving this to have perfect racial harmony is complex but reducing income inequality, providing top education country-wide (in the US, the best education is for the wealthiest and some lucky poorer students who are overachievers and very smart), and finding ways to reduce the amount of hate and fear spread via right media and social media would do a lot to help (the last is tough because the racists and fear spreaders will claim censorship, but letting them spread their hate and disinformation freely has warped a lot of people's minds very quickly). I think the racial situation in Canada is better overall, though they have a historical issue with the native population, overall I think there is far less tension (though not 100% perfect of course).

I don't like when certain nationalities segregate and isolate themselves to a certain district. This starts the problems. They must be mixed within society for it truly to work or there will always be that barrier.. This is why on the east coast we don't have many racial problems because everyone is mixed, unless you head down south of course and that isn't that bad either and getting better. California needs to think ahead instead of just now.
