Why are Tom's Eyes BLACK?  

I'm currently self-isolating on my own (I tested positive and was sick for a few days but I'm feeling much better now) and thought that I could challenge myself by making a small RU-vid video with just my laptop and some free software. This is my first time making "RU-vid Short" and honestly the process was a lot of fun. I don't watch short-form content like this myself, so it was an interesting challenge to fit everything on a vertical image while saying everything I wanted to say in just 60 seconds. I'm not sure if I'll ever make any more videos like this, it depends on how many people see it and what you all think of it. I have more videos in mind, and though I still have some university work to sort out I maaaaay be able to put out a much bigger video by the end of January.

Tom's eyes started off as a black line, but later transitioned into empty, black sockets. He inherited this peculiar trait from a bowling ball (considered Tom's "mother"). Tom meant for them to be fully black eyes which were. Edd decided to take his own approach to the new look and portray them simply as empty sockets. In a second Tumblr post made after the end of Eddsworld: Legacy, the real Tom stated that Tom's black eyes came about from a suggestion he made to Edd after noticing that he would often draw Tom with hollow white eyes when he was shocked. Tom suggested Edd replace his character counterpart's unibrow with black circles for easier animation. Tom meant for them to be fully black eyes which were caused by the counterpart being possessed by a demon that would take control of Tom's body in moments of extreme anger. I dont know if this true

The real question is whether those things are his eyes in the first place or he doesn't really have them, the fact that he's been shot multiple times and still manages to see is pretty weird lmao

"Tom's eyes has something to do with 2D from Gorillaz?" Well, considering that i've saw some fanarts where 2D meeting up with Tom.

I think that Tom’s eyes were empty until zanta 2, where he gets new ones. You might think that they’ve been “shot off”, but I think that the laser shot just fried them and made them super black. It makes sense, since he rubs his eyes in Hammer and Fail, and he punctures them. And the reason for Tom’s eyes being empty from the start is probably genetics from his bowling ball mother.

Ok guys, hear me out Notice how Tom and 2D: -Both have black eyes -Both have the bace color of blue -Both are depressed British men -They're both into music -Both have been suspected of being possessed -And their eyes can both change to white sometimes COINCIDENCE? Personally I think all of the unexplained things in Eddsworld just makes it truly Eddsworld.

The explanation is that Tomska, the character Tom is based on had an accident with fireworks that made him need glasses. Edd put all the "shooting tom in the eyes" gags as a reference to that.

Actually, i have recently found a post from one of Tom's accounts on a website (i forgot what it was) and he confirms when he was 15, he thought it would be cool and edgy to make him share his body with a demon.

Now I just feel bad for Tom.

the real explanation: edd was too lazy and forgot to draw eyes on Tom. So, he decided that Tom will be the only no eye but can see character. The appear of the eyes in Zanta Claws 1-3? To add on the joke.

Halloween song kind of explains that at the end it says you can't possess something twice so he must be possessed or something

and the pictures of tom with eyes are something straight out of an 'Incident' with the black holes still being there, but white sclera and black pupils with no iris floating unsettlingly in the holes.

Tom just drew himself with the black line and when adapting that to the new art style they just kept the black lol

What if they are black holes in the beginning which would explain why eyes in Zanta would fit into his eye socket and the laser just charcoaled them into being fully black. It's never said if tom removed them so it could be that he just left them in his eye socket.

i think the possessed idea was scrapped after the halloween eddisode at the end of the end part 2 he doesn't just simply say "i had them since i was born" he says "it all started when i was younger" so it could be anything

I’m pretty sure that it’s just a character design thing that eventually made less sense and became more noticeable as the drawing style of the series developed until they eventually decided to make it a canonical abnormality and not just part of the characters design and drawing style. As you can see, earlier iterations of Tom’s eyes look a lot more like a style thing and less like a he-canonically-has-no-eyes thing. EDIT: this is just speculation on my part and I’m fairly certain that despite this he does have a canonical reason for his empty eyes now that his eyes are canonically empty

There was an article that the real Tom from Eddsworld, (the co-host/co-animator) and he wrote an article about wanting his character being possessed. He had also made another show, called Orks and Dorks, which he had written and produced himself. There was an Easter egg of a monster that attacks the children, the monster being the same monsters as the one seen in the Magic/hero Edd episode (idk the name) and when the monster is killed, you can see it’s arm transform into the iconic blue hoodie of Tom. Well i use to think hat the chorus of the song "Duality" from the band Slipknot has something related to that, since in the chorus it says "i push my finger onto my eyes, is the only thing that slowy stops the ache, but is made of all the things i have to take" and that for me makes sense, since in Beaster Bunny tom says "You found my real parents?" That means that his mom aren't an bowling ball.

If we were going off by logic, I'd say Tom's eyes would be the same as 2-D's eyes, as 2-D has something called (correct me if I'm wrong) an Eight Ball Fracture. Basically, the pupil gets enlarged when hit and makes the eye nearly ,if not entirely, black.

Based on a comic made on the official eddsworld site, I don't think we should knkw, because when Tom told a girl, after the story (witch was conveniently a missing panel) her eyes were black too.

Either the area around his eyes are scorched and he doesn’t like direct sunlight or 8 ball fracture that caused his eyes to be encrusted in blood
