You missed the part about regulations though, the point is that most private businesses don’t have as many limits to them for costs, like train companies do. When they get the freedom to act like private businesses, they do, which is why it makes more sense to word it the way they did, while talking about the bigger picture.

Partially false. Train companies are not responsible for infrastructure. Network Rail is. The only TOC in the UK with responsibility for infrastructure is Translink.. and they get by just fine charging considerably less than the average British ticket. It’s just price gouging. There is no doubt about it and no point hiding it as ‘just making money’. The standard ticket you actually pay for combines a fee between Network Rail, and any other operators on the route (unless you get a example of say a TPE only railcard which is slightly cheaper) Higher demand would lead to smaller fares as money would be more frequent and therefore lead to higher profit margins, not the complete opposite Reversing privatisation is unlikely to solve the problem. A company still requires executives public or private, and there’s nothing stopping them getting greedy - Irish Rail is a perfect example of a publicised gouging mess And with all that being said, I will always remember how unlimited travel on the Manchester Metrolink network is cheaper than a off peak return you can only use twice
@Boxersteavee

Overall a good explanation but I’m going to just pick on a couple things: 1. By “tpe only railcard” I assume you mean “tpe only ticket” aka a walk-up fare ticket only valid on one train operating company? 2. Higher demand wouldn’t mean cheaper fares. In fact we have seen prices on more demanded routes increase significantly versus routes with lower footfall. This is because there is limited capacity for passengers to travel on any route and as such a great way for train operating companies to make more money is to simply charge more for journeys that (typically) the commuters simply must pay. Take for example my local line, the PDL (aka Portsmouth to London Waterloo via Guildford- a line with extremely high footfall but reasonably low capacity). The line has increasingly become more expensive to travel on simply because more people need to travel on it.

Economics 101: If a market gives high profits, it brings in new investments (aka competitors), out of markets with lower profits. So, there are only two options: 1 - The ticket cost is high, but the operational cost is high too - thus profits are not high; (an information not displayed on the video) 2 - Some external force impedes new investments/competitors entering in the market. So, my Brits friends, do you have state regulations that add additional costs for new companies to built rails and routes? This video is completely wrong. Infrastructure is managed by Network Rail (owned by the government). Fares are set by the DfT, not companies. Rolling stock investment is managed by the DfT (branch of government). We tried having the private sector look after infrastructure and many deadly accidents happened. Transport is a public service, not a for-profit market (although trains can be so efficient sometimes they can make a profit, like the London Underground, which is then used to subsidise buses).
@rothbardfreedom

@@sublivion5024 Economics 101 again: If there is no profit, then it's a market that shouldn't exist at it is - the population itself is saying so, by not willingly buying tickets at a price that can cover the cost. The solution then would be for entrepreneur to find ways to deliver the service cheaper and/or better, so people will be willing to buy the tickets. By creating a state-owned at a loss, you are literally creating something that the people say they don't want as it is (because it's coerced and not-profitable).
@sublivion5024
@sublivion5024 7 месяцев назад
@@rothbardfreedom by that logic, we shouldn’t have roads, because they are state-owned and cost much more to maintain than they generate in tax and toll revenue. Meanwhile, the interstate highway system is attributed to massive economic growth in the US. Anyone who actually understands economics would recognise that mass transport is not a small scale commodity governed by direct sales and costs, but has extremely important macroeconomic and social impacts. Look at your bank statement - the chances are, most things you bought recently do not make you a profit! The same principle applies for the state looking after its citizens (for example, the NHS). The fact is, that there is no reason why railways need to make a profit (although in fact, when they’re invested in enough, they often do - the London Underground and the Elizabeth line for example turn a profit).
@sublivion5024
@sublivion5024 7 месяцев назад
@@rothbardfreedom Also, transport in general *should* be subsidised by people who are not directly using it, because they still benefit from it. Even if you never use trains, you still buy groceries and goods delivered by rail. Your waste is moved by rail. Employers and employees move by rail - you still benefit from GDP growth created by people who commute into the city by rail. Rail infrastructure protects your health, because it’s far better for the environment than moving goods by truck. And lastly, it’s just good for the economy to subsidise transportation - it encourages economic activity - especially when people are on foot. On the other hand, I don’t have a car, so I directly cause practically 0 wear and tear to roads, but roads are still extremely important to me because they help the society I rely on function, so I do think it’s right that a good proportion of my council tax bill goes to maintaining them.

Also just putting it out there as to why train prices are high, this can also be down to fare evaders because that money needs to be retrieved from somewhere, delays because for every minute a train is delayed the train operating company has to pay at least a couple of hundred pound to Network Rail as the companies operate on what is called an "On Time" railway whee if they are not committing to that then they are penalised. Therefore prices go up again to make up for it. Delays can be due to a number of things (if it is signalling then it's not down to the TOC so no fines), drivers not present, station staff not present, passengers holding doors open for their late running friends (this is a big one), train faults.

It’s a catch 22. No one uses the train services because they’re too expensive, so train companies up the prices to cover loss of expenses due to lack of travellers, making it more expensive for those who do use trains, leading to more people to stop using the trains because they’re too damn expensive.

Partly because ecause of multiple reasons. These by far aren’t all reasons, but they ought to be kept in mind when discussing this. I am saying this as a German who lived in Germany, France and Britain and prefers British trains to German trains. 1. UK train stations have a lot more staff than German or French train stations 2. The UK has a lot stronger passenger rights in case of delays than Germany and France 3. One gets an automatic seating reservation while in German and France one needs to pay 5€ to 20€ extra 4. UK train tickets are flexible allowing passengers to use any train they want, while in Germany and France one only is allowed to use the particular train one booked. In Germany one can as well get an open (flexible) ticket one to use any train on the route, but that’s usually 3 to 4 times more expensive than the normal ticket. 5. The DfT is very incompetent.

Most European governments still subsidise passenger fares, for example the Netherlands subsidy is 40%. Other major factor is that most franchises are owned by other European railway companies such as SNCF, Deutch Banhoff, and Nederland Spoorwagon under subsidury companies. Uk is paying to subsidise other European countries passenger railway services, that is why UK franchise system is a joke.

Since Covid it’s the government who have all financial control of all TOCs, just they have to pay a fixed price to a private operator to manage the TOC. The infrastructure is so old that it costs millions to replace it all. The whole ticketing system needs a complete rework, but trains on busy routes, say London to Manchester will be more expensive as there is always a high demand and raising the prices would in theory reduce overcrowding. The railways do not have enough capacity for every service that could run, hence why HS2 is needed to unlock capacity on the London - Crewe corridor. Whilst having little capacity at the minute, trains can’t run as frequently as wanted, so prices rise as a simple demand and supply.

People! History. The railway lines were built by private companies- the Great Eastern, the Great Western etc. then they were nationalized & apart from closing lines down & essential maintenance there very little to no upgrading being done. So, as other European countries upgraded, thinking, France, Germany & Spain, it became obvious that the U.K. network was not serving the country well. The problem was that the government didn’t have the money to take this on so they handed the rail network over to privatization so of course more lines were cut & the price of tickets soared until the price of tickets became, mile for mile, possibly the most expensive in the world.

Well actually all the tickets you buy go to the government and the government pay out To the train companies for every service they run. Some Services make a lot of money while most are just nonprofit. It's the combination of expenses and trying to make train tickets more affordable to the public.

The reason is that the train companies lease the trains. The trains are owned by big leasing companies which have borrowed heavily to buy the trains from the manufacturers. The interest rates that they are charged are very high. The banks are the lenders. So when you pay a lot for a train ticket, much of the money is going to banks and bond holders. The whole system is badly conceived. In other countries, the rail operators own the trains and issue their own debt at low rates to buy the trains (eg France)
