Do you know why Valve Clearances are important? If you missed our previous video we uploaded, find it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E3PGp8A3PYc.html
When adjusting a and b series engines I found using the rule of 9....... valve 1 down adjust valve 8, Valve 2 down adjust 7 ect..... keep up the good work boys
Thanks Edd,got robbed with motor rebuild on a Fiat uno 1.4 NA 5door and first start up was like a diesel had a good laugh when you mentioned it 😂😅 . Valve clearance super important, valve destroyed head n cam case
No one online or currently on TV describes a procedure better than you Edd. I've been mechanicing for many years now and there is always more to learn and I still enjoy your presentation of a procedure that I have done hundreds of times. Thanks Edd for clear instructions and clear images if I was starting out now I would be very grateful for your channel and your interesting projects 👍
I'm wondering if the original got demonitized, and that's why this is being put out again. I'm mean, I'm happy to watch it for a third time because it's excellent, just hoping everything is ok.
@davidbrowning443 I really hope that's true as I've been a fan since series 1 of Wheeler dealers however he has been saying the same thing for sometime now.
Edd is everything OK with you, why reruns? Reruns is ok but I see them on regular television. I'm waiting for you to get going on RU-vid cannel.Hey I got car I have to repair so I need you to help me when I watch your videos.
Some people need to stop moaning about the re-runs. Edd is a top bloke & has brought us years of regular new content & there must be a good reason why previous videos are being uploaded, just view & like to support the channel & show patience till Edd returns with some new content
As important as tappet adjustment is it's often a job that gets overlooked or put off but there's no excuse really with good old, easy to adjust, screw and locknut types. The added complexity and faff of under-bucket shims requiring camshaft removal just adds to the "I'll check them later" syndrome!👎 I had a similar problem on an FZR1000 some years ago when the power delivery lost it's edge and the idle became quite lumpy. After checking the obvious, the valve gaps were checked and most were below spec with two closed up completely and this was on a bike bought new and long before the specified valve check interval which just shows that the service schedule is really just a guide to the minimum maintenance requirements. Thankfully, after setting the gaps, the performance was back so fortunately avoided any valve/seat damage.👍😃
Hi Edd, I used to have a Mini 998 back in the day, I used to use a colour tune plug to check the mixture ratio when I was giving it a tune up however, what I found was, with everything you have done, if I tuned the mixture to a brilliant blue it always had a flat spot, what I found was if it had the tiniest flash of yellow in it (running very slightly to the rich side of the scale) the flat spot disappeared. Also talking to my cousin at the time who is a motor mechanic he informed me that the Mini 998 engine likes to run slightly towards the rich side and when I set up mine that way it was fine and at the time of lead fuel I always had a light coating of grey in the exhaust tail pipe. Not sure if this applies with today's fuels but just thought I would mention it.
Whatever is going on with Edd and the channel (and we all sincerely hope it's nothing too bad, but it's definitely something), it's very clear that someone else is re-posting, and adding random comments, to the page. This is being done because the RU-vid algorithm stops promoting channels who don't keep the content rolling, no matter how many followers you have.
I like to put a long plastic straw down the spark plug hole into the bore to safely feel the piston while I watch the valves to figure out when TDC is.
Talking of bikes and scooters, I bought myself a Lambretta SX 200 way back in 1982 for around A$50 in a little town named Figuras, just outside Barcelona. At 17 y.o. I rode it back to Glasgow, town of birth, and on the way, when I'd broken down crossing the Pyrenees, it was none other than the infamous Johnny Thunder who cruised to a stop on his chopper, and fixed my bike for me. What a sight that was, I tell you. As of 2014 though I have a Ural 750, with sidecar.
And the Ford Xflow. Loved the interference adjusters. Didnt bother with feeler gagues..Simply tighten em up while engine is running till the tappet noise goes away! :)
Omg, I'd love to watch content where you fix up American pickups instead of what we're constantly watching. I'm fed up with the orange car, let's see some proper content. No more repeats, no more silly 5 minute videos. Do the Lambretta, for God's sake, get this channel back on track.
Hi ed great video brings back memories when I had my mini and I use service it myself my mini was van type which great little car the car went round the clock twice it was the rust what killed it off. Steve
Hi Edd i was looking at range rovers and was wondering if they’re actually reliable, they have gained a massive reputation for being unreliable. Any thoughts on that? Also what Range Rover would you recommend as the most reliable? Thanks 👍
Had a customer complaint on a petrol honda crv 2006 model. when started cold, it was spitting, dropping rpm, reving and acting very very strange. Im a certified technician for Honda so i started troubleshooting. and about 30 minutes of tinkering and troubleshooting. I looked at the service history, it stated it recently had donne the valve clearance at a random brand shop.. I called up the customer asking when it started, and the customer confirmed it was after that service. I took it appart, did a new clearance and boy o boy everything was so far off i didnt even belive it at first. did the correct meassurement, and the car was sooooo much better afterwards. im thinking they adjusted the engine when it was super hot. not letting it cool down first :P
Hello Edd, could you please change the oil filter to the Classic Mini 998, I have a car with the same configuration but I don't know how to change the oil filter element. I would really appreciate it if you help me with that. Please
We have a classic Mini which has an unknown history so it is definitely a job that needs doing. It is a really easy (if not a slightly fiddly) job. The thing to watch on the paper element oil filters is the O-ring between the filter case and the engine; really easy to miss. I even heard of one garage adding a second O-ring which ended up causing a serious oil leak at high speed! Watch this space.
@@eddchina Thank you very much Edd I look forward to that video explaining how to change the oil filter element I would really appreciate it and I think it would be excellent content for the channel
22:25. Tomos mopeds. Ha HA! Remember those. Didn't have the street cred of the Fizzies,Suzy AP50s and Puch Maxies. They were sold through Woolworths and most of them ended up in canals!
Edd great video. If you had time you could have carried out a pressure test on the jugs and explained the pressures there it would have added to the jeopardy.
Get them too thin, especially with a lean mixture and you end up with burnt valves on a 998, and segments of the exhaust valves blown out the ports if you are lucky (better hope it's not the inlet valves or they drop on the pistons...!) PS... about an old BSA? :P
1:01 Ehhh nope, the tappets are the cam followers buried down in the engine, you adjust the rocker to valve clearance to effectively adjust the tappet to cam clearances :)
I have this as a thermostat housing gasket, Kellogs Cornflakes and LM2 grease - 18 years, still going strong. Plus using heater matrix hose to replace the bypass hose - pretty much nuke proof.
The 'Ariel 3' may have a nod to the satellite, but 'Ariel' is one of the classic British motorcycle brands that vanished in the past. See 'Ariel Arrow'.
They also produced a model called the 'Leader', which had hideous tin bodywork, and a 4 cylinder, called the 'Square four', for pretty obvious reasons.
Dear Edd, amazing job as always. We have been trying to reach out for a business inquiry for a long time and we couldn't. Could you please help us with that? Many thanks in advance. Kind Regards, Milburg Ltd Team / Manchester
Sacrilege! Adjusting a Mini's valves without using a Gunsons E-Z is just wrong! I loved using that tool on my old MGB/Sprite/TR-6 cars -it made valve adjustment sooooo easy. Too bad most cars today have hydraulic valve lifters and valve adjustment is no longer needed.
Hello Edd China I'm a huge fan of your work, Is their anyway you could please remap my car and give me a full service on my Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI 2007. Thank you very much Yours sincerely Joseph Lovelock
Shouldn't you be using the timing marks on the crank pully to verify TDC? Using the distributor is not reliable, and using a straw (never a screwdriver) in the spark plug hole is only right 50% of the time.
