I was natural for 8 years before getting sisterlocks. All the styles that I did myself were low manipulation. As a result, I am extremely tender headed and prone to headaches caused by stimulation. My loctician has always been as gentle as she could be and never retightens to close to the roots.

I am really concerned about how painful my retightenings are. I'm on the second loctician. I've been told I'm probably just more sensitive. I recently did my own retightening and it didn't hurt. I also don't have a classic grid and I don't care to see my scalp with crisp parts. I'm not sure if I should take over my maintenance at this point. I wanted microlocs for the ease. I don't know what to do at this point. But I know I shouldn't have to take medication every appointment and the next two days.

You are not too sensitive. You have a great frame of reference, because you have already done your own retightening.

This is very traumatic and you'll have some difficult decisions to make long term. This is a major flag as your hair and scalp are telling you, "No!"

Thanks for this. I’ve dense hair and my strands get tangled quite easily so I know that hair stylists are always tempted to yank rather than tease where there’s a know. That happened a lot when I was a loose natural and now and then I have to remind my loctitian to be a little more careful during reties. We did a dry retie once and it was the absolute worst experience so I’ll keep doing it wet. The only problem is when wet it’s harder to catch the slippages but I’ll remember to tell her each time to go one after the other so I don’t have to keep retwisting. My hairs also marry pretty often especially since I’m at the frizzy stage (3months today microloc’d 🎉) so she has to pull apart but I know that while she’s careful she can be even more so. I made the mistake of having my microlocs styled at the salon after a retightening. The person that styled it was different from the one who did the retightening. She was heavy handed with simple bantu knots and I am now regretting it. As the scalp has been manipulated already they should've advised me to leave it until the scalp has calmed down. It took two and half weeks for my scalp to settle. I am naturally tender, so I should've known better too but the salon could've intervened or dissuaded me with the loctician already knowing about my sensitive scalp. I cannot wait to get to the point of doing my own hair.

My consultants always retighten my hair when it’s dry. Has anyone had a retightening on damp hair? I’ve always styled my loose natural hair with water and a crème product. I’ve had my sisterlocks for a year and I wonder if moisturizing the hair prior to retightenings could help with the pulling/tension.

I think for me it's better on damp hair. My loctician prefers to wash my hair so that it is damp for retightening. One time I decided to wash it myself to save time and it definitely felt a lot tighter. I am tender headed as it is so even if it's a gentle hand on my head, I still feel it. I had this issue even with braids done loosely as a loose natural.

I would say yes. It will give the hair more pliability. BUT, if someone is pulling to tight anyway, that same "stretch" or slide could create more tightness after it all over. I hope you are not feeling pain or soreness with this "pulling/tension". I would also say you should not be feeling any discomfort if you have a client- centered loctician.

Yes, I experienced this and it damaged my edges that took me years to thicken back up over the years.
