"To be a sane and happy parent, you need to be counter-cultural in our family-unfriendly culture," writes Tim Carney in his forthcoming book Family Unfriendly: How Our Culture Made Raising Kids Much Harder Than It Needs to Be.
Carney, senior columnist at the Washington Examiner, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and the father of six children, talked with Reason's Zach Weissmueller and Liz Wolfe about declining fertility in America and worldwide and why he thinks it's time for "governments, employers, and other institutions" to "abandon the idea of neutrality and instead take a side: the pro-family side." They also discussed the ways in which governments make it harder to afford large families by implementing counterproductive housing and labor regulations, the role that technology might play in increasing fertility in the future, and react to clips about DINK couples ("double-income, no kids") and discuss the enduring cultural relevance of Mike Judge's 2006 movie Idiocracy.

At 16:30, he says that the baby bust is 15 years old, so it couldn't be high housing prices. 15 years ago, Mark Steyn wrote a book about the decline in babies internationally and high housing prices was one of his main culprits.

Wages aren't comparable to the cost of living when we were raising kids in the mid 90s. It was easier then. My wife and I were born in 1965. We had both of our two kids before 30. She worked for 5 years, we paid off pur student loans, got a house, then had kids, at which point she stayed at home to be with them until 2nd grade for the 2nd kid.This was difficult for the 1st 5 years for us, but we made it work, barely. It's just too expensive to raise kids now compared to the 90s when we were young parents. Some of the young people I work with today who aren't college educated say they can't afford health insurance, do not even bother contributing to their 401k. These same people use public sponsored healthcare for their children. The kids I coached in football and cub scouts, most of them are about 27-29 now and very few are even married, let alone have children. They are all college educated, yet it's too expensive to have children for them. Housing and car costs are just too much for them to consider adding children to the mix. Wages just aren't there for families to consider children, and have at least something comparable to what their parents had.

I'll add that the federal reserve wants to squash wages in order to reign in inflation. But due to less people in the workforce, the monthly job numbers have been strong for almost 3 years now. It's a demographic shortage that will continue to get worse, as with most of the western world. It's a good bet AI will eventually change some of that, especially white collar jobs on one end, and maybe immigration laws will change for mod and lower paid work force. Like it or not, immigrants keep inflation down, it could be worse. H1bs (foreign workers paid poorly, ie.. keep American citizens wages in check) also were brought in to keep wages down in technology by corporate America in the late 90s onward. Think software engineers, coders, hi tech engineering. Think about who you see doing the roofing, plumbing, construction, agriculture and food processing jobs, immigrants. These are legitimate observations. Who will be paying for the baby boomers and the gen x + y retirees? Inflation will be here for a long time. The table has been set. Pretty soon, due to the birth rate, we'll be loosening immigration. Unless AI takes over. That could happen sooner than we think.

I would point out that GOVERNMENT interfering with the ability and right of parents to be parents and to discipline their children has one chilling effect, and the punitive child support system if there is a divorce or kids outside of marriage is another. That being said, you will never love any being more than you love your own kids, and people who have never had kids can never understand this.

I have lived my whole adult life on one income in California; no kids. I was the eldest of four. I told my sister I thought every household with children needed at least three adults. My sister has four, and she said, “Three adults per child.” Maybe my potential mates were killed in Vietnam, because I haven’t found one in time, but I’m encouraged that multigenerational households are forming. “Social security,” is friends and family, not political system handouts.

@MissLibertarian
@MissLibertarian 7 месяцев назад
@@michaellowe3665Well, my Mom is a Democrat from Texas, very generous, great with kids, became a high school teacher and vice principal. My Dad was a Republican from South Dakota, with Protestants (rebellious) and Quakers (tolerant individualists) in his family tree, who became an electrical engineer at Lockheed building airplanes for Uncle Sam (he saw how they spent money poorly). Both of them raised their children to be self-sufficient trustworthy members of society who could take care of themselves and others, and respected our ability to do so more than the politicians do. They sometimes voted together and sometimes cancelled each other out. I was born a libertarian because I am an INTJ like my engineer Dad, was raised by both of them influenced by the homesteaders on both sides of the family, and grew up in California when Watergate and riots nearby at Berkeley for Peace and ending the draft etc. we’re going on. Then I took Econ 101 at the nearby liberal arts college (classical liberal) where my text was written by Milton Friedman about the time the LP had its first meeting (I heard about them 15-20 years later). The way Friedman described economics was clear as a beacon of truth that made sense of everything for me. (Not that he was perfect.) Economics is a science that cannot be manipulated beyond its laws, and one of those laws is that human nature and the aggregated actions of individuals is in control of more than the manipulators think. Respect for individuals is what matters, and the most important question is not whether my Mom or my Dad was wiser, but whether we should trust strangers to try and force one to become more like the other (given it won’t work). Some libertarians are born, but the government makes more at least politically. To be a Libertarian or libertarian politically does not mean you can’t be a liberal (generous) or conservative (saving) personality. The question is (even for authoritarians), “Do you trust strangers in a political system to get it right?” Politically, California was full of freedom seekers, until our money went bad. Sigh. We do have a wealth of engineers, programmers, innovators, and math and physics lovers, I just haven’t found the right one. My requirements are that we speak the same language (I recall a bit of FORTRAN, some math, geometry, and statistics), but mostly don’t want to use politics to try and solve every problem.

With regards to Tims comment about support systems to help raise your kids. Today, many kids have relocated to where their jobs or careers take them. This negates family support. We had to relocate in order to work. We eventually moved back, but it took many years. The economy is not what it used to be. The global economy is much different now, compared to the 80s and 90s. The late baby boomers and early gen x rs had it much easier than today. I dont blame the kids i raised and their friends for waiting or not having kids. My kids are college educated and debt free. They are 28-30. Most of the young adults i worked with in the mid 2010s told me they had SL debt of 70-80k. My SL debt was 18k in 1987. My wifes was 10k. A new decent sedan cost 15k in 1993. Things are different now, way more costly. Housing alone is ridiculous. Corporations have taken over housing, young people are up against much harder headwinds now than back then.

There's a lot of discussion here of the motives of upper caste urbanites in the top 10% of the income and IQ spectrum. Best of everything, career, $8 lattes, $200k colleges. But the other 90% are, well, 90% of the births, or lack thereof. One of the speakers claimed that housing cost increases started just a few years ago, but homeless have been accumulating for at least 25 years. I think housing cost insanity went national in 2020ish, but it's been growing in the urban megaplexes where the jobs are for longer. Bottom 90 ppl live with economic precarity, stagnant wages, poor or no health insurance, and marital instability. I don't think this conversation is relevant to the large majority of ppl. Low birthrates happen across diverse countries and cultures, and are mainly due to urbanization. Subsistance farmers can combine work and childcare, allowing them to have more children younger. When they move to the city and get factory or office jobs, kids require childcare. The extended family can't do it because they're hundreds of miles away, so the urbanites have to pay. This plus the housing costs and space limits of urban life constrain birth rates. It's just a consequence of highly mobile urban culture where you move far away from your extended family to get a decent job, and work outside the home and cannot watch children simultaneous with work.

So many say I need to be "financially stable" to have kids. Sounds like people need to live within their means instead. "Financially stable" is mostly subjective with a little bit of objectivity. If you want to have kids, do it. Youll find ways to make ends meet if you live within your means.
@zwerko

Yeah, that's what the trailer trash parents think as well. True, many of us are using financial stability as an excuse because the modern age implies that financial stability includes being able to afford $5 lattes and similar nonsense, but pretending that there isn't a certain financial threshold (vs spending, of course) one should pass before having kids is inviting all sorts of societal problems down the line...

How much of declining birth rates are due to abundance and the lack of necessity? Women, who may be indifferent to having children, don't need children or a husband who would insist on her having children. Also, there is no need for the social approval of domesticity from your family and neighbors if your family and neighbors have been indoctrinated to not make value judgements about each other (or at least not make public whatever judgements they may have).

But what about India and Africa? Seriously, the problem is the more success capitalism achieve in a society the less children people have in order to work more. The less successful people are in a capitalist society AND the more religious they are, the more children they’ll have. To have more children, capitalism should be in a perpetual state of 50s baby boomer economy, where working, parenthood and life balance were even attainable.

Western attitudes around kids is disappointing and heinous. Makes sense and you lack spirituality. Stop raising kids in developed world. Kids in Africa literally run in the open wild and don't need money until they start elementary school or start their period. In the developed world, they sell you on EVERYTHING: baby clothes, formula, prams, toys, baby monitor etc. You don't need 90% of those things, just raise your kids in the rural countryside and save money growing your own food and bathing them in the river.

Africa has loads of kids because 1. Adults reap most of the $2 per day that those kids live on. 2. Kids are the only pension plan anyone has 3. Birth control isn't easy to access. 4. Women often don't get to say no. Get western ideas and tech to Africa and birth rates will stabilize.

Why did Mother Nature work so hard to make pregnancy happen despite the risk calculations? The pill changed everything that changed, but a supply-chain disruption or grid outage (“Where Were You When the Lights Went Out,”) would reverse that because you don’t mess with Mother Nature. Traditionally, more children if you run a farm. Child labor is a good thing for children. They learn how to be valuable and not starve.
