Why aren't high schoolers using lockers anymore?

If you expect me to put away all my stuff in a locker during the five minutes I have to cross the entire school, you’re crazy.

We didn't even have lockers. Up and down 10 flights of stairs with books for every class.

Honestly nobody has time for lockers, you have 5 minutes to get from one side of a massive school to the other. And it takes like 2 tries to get your combo right.

wait what?? everyone at my highschool uses their locker and there's nothing "uncool" about that edit::::my school system works differently compared to "normal" highschools, so it's built in a way so that our lockers are actually convenient. but yeah, now i understand why student in other schools don't use their lockers

Which school are you in. Everyone use their locker in my school. Many decorates their friends' lockers on their birthday or graduation there is nothing uncool!

Lockers aren't considered uncool at my high school, just no one uses them. I don't have time to go up 2 flights of stairs and across 3 buildings in hallways packed with hundreds to students (Literally so many in some areas that it is impossible to not be touching at least 3 people at once. Some of whom walk slow with no considerations for others) AND somehow go to my locker. I can barely make it to class as it is without a locker.

the only locker I ever had in middle school and high school was my PE locker and that thing was so small you could barely fit a shoe inside.

Our highschool doesn't let us bring our backpacks with us to class so I guess we are all uncool

My highschool lockers are like 3 inches wide which is why we don't use them alot

The reason we don’t use lockers is because we have like maybe 5 minutes to get from one class to the other. And that’s not counting if the teacher is holding you back for any reason, like them still teaching even though the bell rung because the bell doesn’t dismiss you the do 🙄 but they also except you to be in your seat with your materials out ready to go before the bells rings. Or you need to go to the bathroom because teachers don’t let you go in class because you have PLENTY of time to do that during the passing period, but there’s like 10 people trying to go to the bathroom all at once because teachers don’t let you go to the freakin bathroom during class.

Wow, i remember the times it was so fun to have your own locker, because they were the tall kind (not the small ones most schools seem to have now), you could decorate the inside how you want, place heavy textbooks in there, etc. Depending on where you had it is what made it cool or not. For example, it was cool to have a locker near a class, certain floor or the water fountain vs. near the bathroom. Good times, good times.

When I was in high school a few years ago, people rarely had enough time to use their lockers and make it to class on time. But in middle school we used them.

Here is why: 1. Schools are over crowded, my school was built for 1500, currently has 2900. There are only 800 lockers now because they cleared them out for study areas 2. Textbooks are online 3. 6 minutes isn’t even enough time to get to class when teachers let out late and expect the warm up to be done when the bell rings. You can’t even use the bathroom anymore 4. Lockers are not that safe 5. You are allowed to bring your backpack with you to class, unlike middle school where even laptop bags were banned. We were forced to before so we hate it now, simple human nature.

My old high school stopped using lockers because there were so many break-ins.

At my brothers high school nobody uses their locker because all their classes are so far from their locker so they use bookbags

My high school required us to use our lockers because backpacks were deemed too dangerous (in the sense of leaving them on the floor or bumming someone with you backpack) it got to the point where we were told no backpacks on campus peroid but it was quickly revoked and changed to during school hours. They blamed it on a easy way to carry drugs around but everyone knew it was because this one teacher who seemed to go out of there way to trip on someone's bag (even it it was under the students desk)she would some how trip on it.

Ahhh high school, a time when you worry about stupid stuff and don't realize 99.9% of the people there, you will never see again or recognize if you met them later on in life. A time when someone else pays your bills and everything and you still don't appreciate their unconditional love for you.

There isn't enough time to even use lockers. If I have to go from the 1st to the 3rd floor in 5 minutes I don't have time to go to a locker. I just carry everything in my backpack. And I only have like one textbook for precalc. My teachers only use in class textbooks mostly.

In my school we use the lockers not to store our books, but for other stuff that we don't use everyday; accessories for ceremony, rain coat, umbrella, spare flip flops, lab coat, calculator, etc

I literally use my locker 24/7, basically between every period. It’s really helpful keeping books in folders inside of my locker so I can just grab them quickly and walk to class.

We have 5 minutes to get from one class to another. We don't have time to stop by our locker. And five minutes is pretty generous considering 60% of our teachers let us go late for whatever reason.

Freshman and Sophomore year I tried using lockers, but it's almost impossible to leave class, unlock a locker, and go to a different class in 5 minutes. Its way easier to just carry a backpack, and that way you can never forget anything for your classes in your locker. It cuts out the "middle man".

no one uses their locker since its location could be literally anywhere in the school, it's usually inconvenient and too far out of the way of your classes. since you only have a few minutes to get to your next class there's literally not enough time to use it. so it's just easier to carry all your stuff around with you all day

When I watched this in middle school I was like nah I'm definitely gonna use my locker and now a year later I don't use it cuz you wouldnt get to class on time if you had to go to your locker

As a German who loves American movies from the late 90's / 00's - this devastates me.

The reason why high schoolers (at least in my school) don't use their lockers is not because they're "uncool", it's because they're inefficient. Some schools are very old and haven't been renovated for many years, mine being the case. Some of the lockers are very finicky and get jammed. This makes it hard for students to open up their locker quickly enough, get to class on time, and go to the restroom or do something else in time. There's also the fact that even if they were in perfect condition, they would still be time consuming. If you had to go from class A and across the hall to class B, theoretically that would be a very quick transition, but what if your locker was on the other side of the school? You'd have to go there each transition period and change your materials. Futhermore, there is the fact that everyone would be using them, the lockers would be crowded for anyone getting into the lockers, going to their class and using the locker. It would be hell being in these locker zones. Finally, there is the fact that you might possibly put something valuable in your locker, if someone finds the code or is willing to break it open, there goes your stuff. This is especially common in public schools. In middle school you might see everyone using them, but never in high school. They just realized that there are too many cons and very little pros.

I go to a school that has middle school and high school together. And most of my grade don’t use our locker bc the older kids are always in the way. If we say “excuse me” or something… they always push us around or make fun of us.

Not in highschool anymore. But this must be in a warm climate. Everyone uses their locker when they have their jacket or coat. Unless you wanna carry it around all day. Also helps keep projects and books that you don't need to carry around everyday. It was very convenient.

I had the option to use a locker, but I never did throughout high school. You only have a few minutes to get from one class to the next. Being late a few times can result in a referral, and it isn’t worth it for a locker.

I can confirm this. It's so rare for someone to use their locker at my school.

When I was a freshman in high school, I tried going to my locker in between classes, and would always end up late since my locker was in a part of the school that was far from any of my classes. Then I just ditched it.

i use my locker to house my backpack and my lunchbox. i carry a drawstring most of the time with all my stuff in it and some in my hands. i don’t trust kids around my food.

Lockers would be a great alternative to the years of back pain you get carrying your books everywhere.

at my school 80% of kids use their lockers, only at the beginning or end of they day for coats and sometimes lunch boxes

I barely had enough time to go to the bathroom in between classes. Most people who used lockers had separate binders for each class and liked to keep things organized. We also had very out dated text books but they would always stay in class.

My senior year of high school, my school started tearing down and getting rid of the lockers (we’re mainly an outdoor campus, so all of our lockers were outside) because the district caught my school making us pay $45 for a tiny locker. Everyone used lockers before that happened, however.

When I was in high school, we had five or six textbooks AND we weren't allowed to bring our backpacks into the classrooms. Lockers were a must.

In year 7 we used lockers but after that we carried all our books in our bags. At one high school I went to we would bring our bags inside the classroom, at another high school we left our bags outside. We didn’t have hallways, they were outside sitting on a long bench outside the classroom or on the concrete. We only brought them inside if it started raining.

I remember in elementary everyone looked forward to having lockers in middle school and then decorating them. Once I was in middle I never understood why people took the time to decorate them with pictures and stuff when they only spent like 10 mins by a locker each day. We had to use them to put our backpacks in. I would put in my backpack, coats, and textbooks. I remember putting a lock on my mine which was really just a waste of time trying to get it open to get textbooks in between the 5-10 minute period you had. During the last few years I didn’t put a lock on and if someone wanted to steal my textbooks I was like so be it. During hs we chose if we wanted a locker. I did choose one freshman year just to put my textbooks in if I didn’t use them or my coat. But many teachers weren’t using textbook as much later in hs so rarely anyone uses a locker know.

It’s bizarre how in movies and tv lockers are a huge part of a typical high school setting when in reality (at least at my school) we never use them....

It's honestly easier to carry around a 35+ lbs backpack (topped out at 40 or so) around campus than it was stopping between classes because the 5 minute passing periods were definitely not enough time to go from a class to the locker to another class. Why would I risk being tardy to class when I can just put everything in my backpack and replace said broken backpack every year with a new one? It's not that it's "uncool" - it's just more practical not to use one.

No one thinks is uncool to use a locker. Our school has two different buildings and the buildings themselves are big and classes are scattered you barely have time to go to you locker. If you have your locker at the end of school where you don’t go to most people have joint lockers with a friend who’s locker is closer to where your classes are. I used my locker since I took a bunch of ap classes, I also bring a coat in winter and a jacket on a daily since some classes are colder than others and I don’t feel like carrying it around. I also do a lot of after school stuff so I put my art things, food and clothes in my locker. I also bring extra clothes cause you never know what might happen. I also share my locker with 7 other friends since my locker is in the best area which is close to the cafeteria and by the office and by where the busses drop off.

People still use lockers but not as often cuz you can’t change your whole bag in 2 minutes -_-

I used my locker at the beginning and end of the day, and sometimes at lunch but mine was broken and the top section didn't lock. I stopped using my locker my junior year because a swarm of asshats started using the broken top part as a garbage can and spilled rancid orange juice seeped through the top and all over my expensive coat. I complained to the school and they refused to give me a new locker. So I then put all my belongings in the back of the classroom of a teacher that I liked.
