Asbestos is banned in around 70 countries in the world. But some continue to use the toxic fibers. With fatal consequences. But how dangerous is asbestos really? Where are people most in danger? And how could its use be stopped?

The sad thing is everybody in countries like Australia who have banned it and people seem to fear it as if its like a poisonous gas coming to get them yet have not been told of the other dangers like silicon dust ie cutting and grinding stone , concrete and the like that can give you silicosis (for example)which now many are suffering with. Education of the dangers of other commonly encountered materials should also be done.

@@EudaderurScheiss 1879 was the first noted anomaly and the first formal diagnosis was in 1935. Took many decades for any action to occur. Asbestos, isn’t a problem, providing it is known where it is and it isn’t aerosolised. The same way that cars aren’t a major risk if you look left and right, however, still, far more people are killed in car accidents than die from asbestos. Or at least that’s what the empirical evidence indicates. The death stats from smoking or alcohol are far higher than both combined. Rather like covid, the harm caused by the mitigating actions was equal or greater than the harm caused by the disease itself, that was certainly what the only sensible nation, Sweden, proved.

I'm a retired senior level Environmental Project Manager having worked the US and West Africa. I performed dozens of industrial facility decontaminations and decommissioning, such as smelters, power plants, battery facilities, etc. Asbestos was just one of the thousands of waste streams I had to deal with, and it was my LEAST favorite. I'd rather clean up 2 lead smelters than I had asbestos, and many times I had both. While it's true the concrete dust and demolition dust I breathed over my career was not healthy, as many have alluded to in the comments, asbestos' effects are FAR more insidious after exposure than many "particulate" non-"toxic" inhalants. If I breath in lime or concrete dust, hopefully my mucus system will encapsulate and expel it. Asbestos is like thousands of tiny crystalline harpoons piercing through lung tissue, but unlike dust, it's there for good like accumulative heavy metal poisoning. Asbestos and PCB's both began to be regulated about the same time in the US. I thought all of the developing countries, especially Germany, would have put this to bed decades ago.

My dad died of mesothelioma 35 years after he was exposed to asbestos dust at work. His office was next door to a big plant room where they were removing lagging. He reckoned it was dusty for about two weeks. That tiny period left him with a time bomb he didn’t even suspect put him at risk. He got suddenly breathless despite being really fit otherwise and the X-ray showed he had fluid from the cancer crushing one lung. He didn’t last 3 months. Terrible disease .

My house, which was built in the 60's, has needed asbestos removal 4 times, plus we've discovered it several times. We discovered it in the walls in 2006, then the pipes in 2007, then when we redid the kitchen in 2015, it was in the oven insulation, and also in 2015, we redid the master bathroom and there was asbestos tiles.

There are environmental test labs which can identify asbestos for you. My Dad's approach was to treat any suspected fibrous material as if it is asbestos. That's probably why he thought fiber glass insulation being asbestos. I suspect though that fiber glass is also highly suspect of potentially causing lung disease as does silica. I agree with his conservative approach. The shipping company provided his ships with so much extra paint that he laughed at how white they quickly painted the ship's deck before inspection and got praised by the inspector. They poured buckets of paint upon the deck and used brooms to spread it around. That was the *WHITEST* deck the inspector had ever seen ! 😂

If one has to work with asbestos dust, one should clean up afterwards using a vacuum cleaner with *HEPA* filter and wet mop the area clean. Avoid getting any dust into the air. As my Dad had taught me to be conservative about being exposed to asbestos, glass fiber, silica dust, etc., I only use HEPA-filter equipped vacuum cleaners nowadays to avoid generating dust. Wet mopping floors also help mitigate dust.
@solconcordia4315
@solconcordia4315 10 месяцев назад
One should wear proper equipment such as face masks or respirators of HEPA quality and other PPEs and environmental control such as sheeting and sealing tape. When done, also take a whole-body shower and remove any dust from one's body. The whole point is to keep asbestos fibers from being inhaled by anyone. Dust abatement can do that.

Asbestos isn't a toxin. When you state "working with asbestos" there is a big difference between manufacturing it, installing it, abating it or disturbing. The most common current exposures are from improper removal or disturbal.
@solconcordia4315

Everyone should know where asbestos is and keep it well-maintained (such as by painting over it to bind together the asbestos fibers -- my Dad worked about three decades on British Merchant Navy ships and serviced their boilers and piping probably lined with asbestos -- he warned me upon seeing glass fiber insulation believing that it was asbestos so yes, I appreciate his efforts to guide me as well as he could as an illiterate person) not allowing it to frat and disperse into the air
@solconcordia4315
@solconcordia4315 10 месяцев назад
Slightly wetting by spraying the asbestos first with soapy water to reduce dust creation first before painting over it can prevent its fibers from being frayed and dispersed into the air where people and pets can breathe it into their lungs. As *undisturbed* insulation, asbestos is just like rock. Removing it from where it is to a buried site may actually create more dispersal of asbestos fibers than keeping it working where it is. For example, asbestos on my Dad's ships' boilers and piping was immobilized with paint.

The issue with asbestos isn’t by any means a new discovery it’s been known it’s bad for longer then I’ve been alive and I’m 42. Who in thier right mind uses this still… haven’t yet removed any that’s still within any buildings and legally they were to remove this years ago. So… again how’s this still an issue? There was a time frame back when this was talked about 40 years ago to rid all buildings of it yet .. here is a video stating otherwise…. Anyone lost on this? At this point anyone still knowingly working or living in such places would know they are and should have dealt with this long ago. Not sure sympathy for such people and places today can happen can it. Should it? Or is anger not valid over safety concerns? Just friendly thought

I can live with well-maintained asbestos in the same way that I can live with lead-acid battery in my car. I don't use or buy any asbestos-containing product anymore but I leave the existing well-maintained asbestos alone painted over. My Dad could repair boilers and piping probably insulated with asbestos for about three decades without any problem with asbestos-induced diseases. I think that his employer made sure that he knew what precautions to take. He was conservative in not wanting to risk his health or life unnecessarily. He was probably the "designated survivor" of his parental family and he survived the influenza pandemic, the Second Sino-Japanese War, as well as WWII's U-boat torpedoing and sinking his ship in the Battle of the Atlantic and the Great Pacific War. Eat slowly and be patient when eating fish to avoid bones. When all hope is gone, know how to surrender submissively to the ones who had torpedoed his ship. All his (over ten of them) siblings died of the scourges of diseases, biowar, and major wars. Knowing that one's own life is precious and acting patiently with great situational awareness definitely helped.
