It makes me happy to see that- for the most part- anime-only fans seem to generally love the ending. Much better deserved than what happened when the manga chapter came out. As always, listen in with some headphones, a bite, and a drink- and celebrate the ending of an incredible saga with me!
Hopefully Isyama can rest now knowing that he’s appreciated. The manga community was disgusting two years ago. I personally couldn’t have loved seeing things kept mostly the same on the screen.

I'm a manga reader who disliked the original ending. Though the anime followed the manga closely, the dialogue changes and additions were a huge improvement imo. Dialogues like "I'm just an idiot" and "Let's meet in hell" fixed some of my biggest complaints. I loved how they did it Even though I still have some qualms and I don't think what we got is perfect, I am fine with how it ended. Also I acknowledge that writing AoT ending is a huge task and it could've gone way worse. I'm just grateful we got to witness full adaptation and improvements over the manga.

The ending might not be perfect, but for me it is. The story did what was promised, which was to end this one cycle of violence, but letting us know that more conflict always loom in the corner. It's a mature ending and a cautionary tale but has a dash of hope that we can change for the better. Even if you don't catch all the backstory for Ymir, or aren't satisfied about Eren's portrayal, those core messages remains intact.
Idk from the moment we knew it was more than a show about killing titans, I was expecting Erens ending. Armin said it well in the end, when they were on the ship going back to paradise, people will want to know about their journey, listen to their story. And for me, aot is just that, a part of worlds history, a slice of a repeating cicle of war that we happen to have watched. You may not like the ending, but it was the most fitting one. I think Isayama did not wrote Eren as an "anime protagonist" but as a "real person" who ended up with powers way too big for him. That's why throughout the evolution of the manga he became at some point a "hero, anti-hero, protagonist, Antagonist, villain, a side character..." He's not my personal favourite but he's very fascinating as a character.
Exactly! He's really close to Walter white from breaking bad for me. His hopelessness in the end, the fact that he says, "I do it bcs I want to do it so badly" really close to "I did it for me".

Maybe i just didn't want to overthink it. Still, when I had the opportunity to see the last episode I just took it all in, I just enjoyed the last ride and allowed myself to feel happy, sad and nostalgic because I was saying goodbye to something that I've seen develop since the very begging. I was "spoiled" for a couple of things, the bird, Eren dying, Mikasa and Jean, etc etc, and at the end, it didn't really matter, I was just delighted to belong to the journey one last time.
Also, I am so pissed that he felt that he had to apologize for the ending, after puting his blood sweat and tears to wrapping up the story the best he could, he felt that he failed his fans.

When I saw manga readers saying "I hope they change the ending its awful" I was really worried.. Then I watched it, and its exactly how I hoped they would end this. I have no idea how these people wanted this show to end, it set all of this up then played it out.. No shock random plot twists or new secret enemy at the end.. The only thing I was suprised at was that none of our cast died outside of Eren and Zeke. Sounds to be like these people are mad that they didn't get their fan fiction, and now they're uspet that the vast majority of people love it haha
What a journey it has been! Wow. Ever since I first started AOT a year ago, this has been the best experience! The ending is amazing, I can't wait to read the manga and see what kind of changes they made. Thank you, Isayama, we owe you a lot.
I'm here to offer a hypothesis on the manga/anime reception dichotomy: The reason why the manga and anime endings were received so differently was not actually an issue of anime versus manga, but rather an issue of fan versus superfan. Someone who is a superfan would have deep-dived into the material, the lore, the theories and speculation. They'd visit fan sites and forums, and analyze every word Iseyama ever said. They'd have developed an extensive, ideal headcanon. And they'd be upset if their vast expectations were not met. Naturally superfans would gravitate toward the manga, even if they started on the anime. Thus the conflicting receptions.

Completely agree, but I would say that some of those "super fans" take it to a really unhealthy territory, you can be disappointed when you spend so much time theorizing and idealizing how a journey (that you have invested so much time in) is going to end and it ends up not meet those expectations, but completely disregarding the entire story, or even going as far as attacking the author is just taking it too far and sadly it's what happened to AOT.
And it's also very hard to react impulsively when you literally know all your future life. As soon as he lost that edge and he knew he had to die, he freaked out and went back to the Eren we knew, he never had the time to grow up in an environment like that. I obviously prefer his cold persona, but the change also made sense.

I think my biggest gripe with the ending is that the entirety of the last season was Marleyans and Eldians needing to work together for a common goal, and after the rumbling and Eren's death you don't really see a conclusion to that. The only thing we really got were the main characters sailing back to Paradis as peace brokers and that's it. I would have loved to see Historia visit Marley or some leader of Marley come to Paradis, and even see people from both sides visiting each other as a sign that there was not going to be any more conflict. Instead we got Paradis being run by Jaegarists who still think the world is their enemy when that shouldn't be the case anymore, and soldiers of Marley still aiming their weapons at Eldians after Eren died. There were still too many things that didn't make sense to me in the end.
I mean even if 80% of the population of the outside world got wipe out they still vastly outnumbers the Eldian on the island so they still feel like they were in danger
It’s so refreshing to have a show ending that was satisfying. Seems like no good/great show has had a good ending since Breaking Bad. I think that’s a part of why I liked this ending so much and why it made me emotional. We finally got an actual satisfying ending to a narrative
It’s stupid that some people think that Eren’s breakdown was out of character and a “betrayal” of his character. Maybe it was a betrayal for those, who just like to simp over his edgy mass murderer cold persona, but at that point of his story he is 19. A 19 year old kid, who committed genocide and is about to die. It’s entirely natural for him to break down crying. And he still does that in front of Armin, not Mikasa. It would really be just weird if he cried in front of her, but he only does that in front of his best friend, even trying to hold himself together for some time
Im satisfied already with the finale. This may be the most realistic endind i can see. I may have missed some plot holes but overall it was a fun, intense, wild journey ive seen in all anime. This will forever be remembered as one of the greatest series of all time. One last time: SHINZO SASAGEYO!!!

@@supremeleaderfrancisco9062 None of those are plot holes, just things that you may have missed, or haven't tried hard enough to interpret (there are a lot of vague things that the viewer is left to figure out on their own) 1. Ymir being freed had to do with the end of the titans, not with the start of the rumbling. Eren was able to convince her to help with the rumbling because he was the only one to ever sympathize with her, causing her to go against the will of Fritz just that one time. It wasn't until Mikasa killing Eren that she decided to give up entirely on Fritz's will. 2. Just because we see things happen in a certain order doesn't mean it happened at those exact times chronologically. It could've taken Armin a long time to pass out, we have no indication of how long that took, 3. It has been shown multiple times that its semi-random how much control people have over their titan abilities. It's not impossible by any means, its just a lucky occurrence. 4. Dina eating Berthold would have either resulted in her death, or a large amount of damage to Paradis. Even if she did survive the other titans after becoming the colossal titan, she likely would have had a scene similar to the "Are you a human or a titan?" scene that Eren+company had. Due to the nature of the colossal titan, she would die and/or cause immense damage to Paradis. This would change everything he knows, and not necessarily for the better from Paradis pov. 5. It's perfectly realistic regardless of how unhealthy it is for her, Stockholm Syndrome is a real thing. 6. That may be how Eren felt about her during the early parts of the series, but as time went by, it really wouldn't be surprising either way. 7. He already killed almost everyone in Marley, the only people left were those at the fort in the end of the series. As for the other countries, they weren't nearly as racist towards Eldians pre-rumbling. He isn't able to see the future after his death, so he wouldn't know how they are post-rumbling. Of course, after the rumbling, it entirely depends on luck for whether the blame for the rumbling lies on Eren alone, or Paradis as a whole. I assume, though, that most of the surviving countries after this would have been considerably damaged because they can no longer rely on trade to sustain their economies.
My only complaint is the people attempting to endorse Eren at the end. This whole 'He WaS a GReAt gUY' "I WiSh I cOuLd'VE CHatTEd wItH hiM" comments by the protagonists at the end was the most toxic crap I've ever heard. Eren wanted to lure every one he ever cared for into an unbeatable battle and had multiple legit opportunities to end all the titans powers without killing 80% of humanity. How the hell Eren gonna say "I tried but I can't change the future." when he ends the convo with Armin with "I wanted to see it through." The most toxic friendship I've ever seen in anime.
The Manga readers brought down my expectations so low that I truly enjoyed and loved the beautiful ending of Attack on Titan. what a great journey, what a great show and what a befitting ending to a tragic story.
Yeah i still dnt get. What was the controversial part of the anime? Is that the genocide? Is that post credit scene where civilization got destroyed? Or the main character took a 180 and turned into the bad guy?
The anime swapped a few things, if they didn't you'd feel it. You'd know why. It's a funny thing, a story can cross over from being phenomenal to utter garbage in people eyes by a moment so small and brief. (You can look at comparison on youtube to see the changes.) The reason for most of the hate is that people's suspension of disbelief was thrown off by character acting out of character, things happens when it shouldn't have, etc. Like Daenery choice in game of throne, it'd be believable if she was given more time and reason to act like she did, and people would accept that ending as it is much more. Anime gave a certain moment some time to breath, some sequence swapped, and that - fixes a lot.
To be specific, Armin sounds like he is condoning Eren’s genocide because it benefits him. The reason why Mikasa’s love cause Ymir to stop supporting Eren was unclear. Eren was unemotional, cold, and calculated for so long that his whining about wanting Mikasa to not move on was so jarring. Those are just the things they fixed by copious explanations. Things like the team up between Paradisian and Marleyan Titan Shifters, Falco’s avian Titan, Ymir’s definition of love, the bird that wraps Eren’s sweater, how soon Shiganshina was bombed, and Eren and Historia’s baby, for example, are still up for grabs to criticize.
@@iantaakalla8180 Paradis getting bombed is fixed in my eyes now because instead of appearing to be bomb to dust in just two or three generation, paradis lasted till cyberpunk age before it fell, which seems like a more understandable inevitability of humam nature instead of a retaliation of a failed genocide. Pieck seemingly idolise eren after the battle despite never talked to him in the path irk me still tho. Thats the part where I wish itd get cut the most.
Over a decade Isayama devoted his life to create this story. It's unfair to judge it as bad or good in a single comment. Despite the anime's controversies, we should not deny the fact that he intended to send many messages to his audience. For me, it was perfect. It was human. Eren never changed, his inner-child is shown when he expresses his love for Mikasa, his anger and wish of seeing his ideal vision of Freedom is sick, as it always has been. "I'll kill them all" "I'll kill the entire world" "i am free". Yet, he knows its wrong, but he does it nonetheless. Either bc he can't change fate, or/and because he wanted to see that vision. I was really satisfied with the conclusion of an anime. When i heard manga ending got lot of backlash and all so i was worried for the anime and shockingly majority of people in anime community loved the ending while also aknowledging the issues they felt were there in finale but still the feeling of an ending was perfect for AoT + also they made some changes in the anime which sort of fixed the ending in anime so it is even better.
Loved the Video Man! You said what I had said in my first video but with far better quality. I totally agree with you how the Manga Culture is F***ed, and I have first hand experience of something of it in the world of Web Serials in RoyalRoad, you are just under constant pressure, that maybe you get a sense of relief that at last it's over. In this debate we always forget that sometimes the Journey is supposed to be worth it and the ending doesn't diminishes the value of prior content.
Can’t speak for everyone else but I enjoyed it. This is coming from a manga reader. We’re all entitled to our opinions which is really the entire point of shows like AoT.
It‘s a mystery to me on how I never got the ending/other plottwists spoiled even tho i actively followed the AoT fandom, thank god I was able to enjoy this masterpiece of a show raw as it is. And ty ACC for always dropping these banger videos on the show
I didn't quite know what to think when i heard the ending was controversial, but i was pleasantly surprised that it was actually pretty much what i imagined and hoped. That the controversy was actually the pro-rumbling people being disappointed was hilarious, at least in the anime it seems so obvious to me that Eren was a contradictory character from the start.
I'm 50/50 on the ending but I just don't get the hate from the people who dislike the ending. What can they do? AOT is done. It's not like Yams is going to retcon that ending just because of the backlash.
I really liked the ending overall, but I am annoyed the anime didn't answer the big questions the manga left us with, leaving things like Historia's baby as a red herring and Mikasa's romantic future ambiguous.

AoT is definitely one of those shows where I put up with the later half because I was so intrigued by the first half. But you have to stick the landing. I think the reason you see more weak endings in modern times, is because writers are not thinking of the ending and progression to the last point as they write the beginning. Either writers change, a show goes on longer to make more money/impact, a main writer loses energy, or so many plot twists have been used that wrangling in an ending is beyond anyone's task. Regardless the most important thing for me is progression. How did this character get from A to B? Was it humanly believable, if others were in their shoes? I think the character development of all the main characters were assisinated by unbelievable and sometimes completely absent development. People don't just flip on a dime. They get there somehow, be it in there mind or by external factors. This is often a problem I have with modern cinema. In Star Wars, Anakin's fall to the dark side was weak and not believable. They just abruptly showed that it happened some time in the third prequel film. It should have been written that any good person in Anakin's position would have tragically fallen to the dark side given events and progression of the story. Or take Daenarys in GoT. Her progression to being deranged and endlessly murderous was sudden with no palpable progression to get there. Character arcs are madly important for this reason. They aren't called character rectangles. There is a smoothness required for tone and progression. And messing that up happens when you are too lazy to plan the whole work from the beginning.
I thought the ending fit the theme of attack on titan eren was always gonna end up dead no matter he wanted to make sure his home wasn't attacked wich was bound to happen im not trying to justify erens actions but if you knew that your home is gonna be invaded you would want to do something about it so eren thought im going to strike first So he infltrated marley and striked puting on a facade of calm and collected but he couldn't bursting out onto tears to the child before they all got stomped
I was pretty mixed about the manga ending but the anime version felt a lot better imo. The changes were really minor but I think they helped. It isn't a perfect ending but I do like it for what it is.
It's interesting seeing the anime only peeps react to this ending. I'm a manga reader, and I thought the ending was just ok on initial release, mostly because it felt rushed and I felt like Eren's headspace wasn't explained enough(I think due to poor translations). The anime's execution improved on the pacing front, and made where Eren stood clear. In that sense, the anime actually fixed the ending a bit for me, which is nice. Though, Ackerman's and Zeke aside it didn't feel the right sendoff to the characters, but rather the plot if that makes sense and that's my problem with it to be honest. Honestly, I think that is my main issue with the final arcs overall, it felt like the plot superseded the characters a lot compared to the previous arcs.
that's a good point- definitely improved on the pacing, but that didn't change the fact that they couldn't get to everyone's story arcs in that time, and definitely could've been better on that front
I really didn't know what to think about the ending. I LOVED the final battle, the whole sequence that went on for like an hour or so. After that, the conversation with Armin and all the rest... it felt weird. It still does, because it's not... not to say "what i expected", because I didn't know what to expect. I wanted to be surprised and satisfied. And... I wasn't, at least not fully. I didn't really like that the whole story basically went nowhere, when the people still remade their past mistakes years later. And i think that fiction should in a way differ from reality. Have a conclusive, satisfying ending - even if it's not a happy ending. But this wasn't it, at leat not entirely. But this video made me take a chill pill and remember, that more important than that was the road that got us here. It wasn't about the destination, but the journey ahead. Isayama made me feel so many different emotions throughout the story. Got me hooked from the start to the end and blew my mind every single time another plot twist came around. It was just fun! Even when it was sad and depressing, it still was a great piece of popculture and entertainment. Art, even. And even if the ending isn't perfect for me... at least there is one. And, to quote my other favorite show in the world, Top Gear: "Still, could be worse".

It’s just like GOT, TLOU2 and many others. All great stories because people can interpret them in multiple different ways. It’s always been fascinating to me that people can create valid and sound arguments for both sides that make perfect sense. A truly masterpiece of a story to me doesn’t have an ending that is unanimously liked but a story that can great such divides. It’s the kind of story that FORCES its audience to bet on a story they believe that should happen or to defend the story that the author laid before us. Not many stories do that, so to me these devises stories are the greatest in my opinion.
While I agree with your point, I woudnt compare attack on titan with game of thrones lightly. Game of thrones fumbled a lot more than just the ending. And dont get me wrong I fully support the mad queen arc, but not in the way it was portrayed. It required a lot more of a build-up, not even the writers know what they wanted to say and the writing was trippin since season 5. While attack on titan ending had a few faults, they werent that important and its core message was loud, clear and most importantly, consistent with the series as a whole.
TLOU2 is another masterpiece. You see the same types of people, "Joel died and I'm really upset so I'll keep being upset and won't get past that fact" you gotta let these stories take you for a ride. GoT is similar, like even if you ignore the last few seasons due to the bad pacing and the changes.. The truth is that Bran will be king in the books and Dany will burn kings landing.. And yet people say she would never do that, even though shes been written to be that way since day 1. People want their own fan fictions, even though all of the fan fictions are really bad for TLOU2/Game of Thrones (Even though I didn't like how it ended, most of the fan fiction is somehow worse) /AoT.
GoT and TLOU2 are more comparable to each other than Attack on Titan. Breaking Bad is closer to Attack on Titan than you think; both men supposedly have a selfless goal, but inject a selfish reason. Both reject better alternatives or otherwise have no other choice. Both are not particularly notable men with one power who think they can be the man. Both plots rely on the exact sequence of events to gain ultimate power. Both stories involve societal issues as a cause, person issues, and intermingle both to make the unique people Eren and Walter are. Both die, and finally admit they are selfish people chasing fruitless goals just before death, and gain some respect for admitting this. Both people, upon getting power, push away everybody else, and even pull off uncharacteristically cool moves, and thus are seen as alpha men, and thus are the problematic “literally me” characters. Both, underneath it all, hate themselves and think they have to be “the man” to make stuff happen to fulfill their abstract wish. Both people are frequently in trouble. Even less acknowledged is that both depend on luck even if Eren manipulated himself to get the Attack Titan and to hate Titans (Eren chances upon hardening serum; Marco Bott’s death was figured out because Mikasa inspected the equipment; Eren helped Historia which means Historia supported Eren when he fell into despair at the cavern, Armin is so steadfast that he was the only reason people gave Titan Eren a chance, Armin had a major influence on how Eren envisioned freedom as did Carla, etc.). Heck, Walter White is Eren if Walter was a teenager and possessed Attack Titan powers.
I'll be honest, a younger me, 5 years ago at 22 would've probably hated this ending. It's heartbreaking and my younger me wouldn't want Eren to end this way. Being more mature now I'm content with it and understand the nuances to it.
I still don't understand the take of "Isayama revealed everything about Eren in the last chapter out of nowhere". We had chapter 121 and 123 hinting at Eren's feelings for Mikasa, chapter 130 showing what Eren wanted for his friends, and chapter 131 showing Eren's deep true motives. The whole series hints at these revelations, but those chapters are the key ones.
Thank you for making this. I heard about the controversial ending, but I had absolute faith in Isayama. I've loved this story from the first episode, and I could sense greatness in everything he wrote, even when many fans lost interest. I knew that he wasn't capable of making a bad ending. And he wasn't. It was a beautiful ending that is only overshadowed by the incredible sadness I feel towards Mikasa and Eren, and the fact that I won't be able to look forward to another episode or experience it for the first time again. I think I can understand part of what Mikasa feels, in that I have to say goodbye to something that I love dearly. It's something that I will remember, smile of, and then feel sad about. But it's something that I will hold on to for the rest of my life, and just like Mikasa, 10 years will not be enough to make me forget anything. To me, Attack on Titan is the single best piece of fiction ever written, and it's something that everyone needs to see. There are no words to describe how honored I am to have been able to witness Attack on Titan, and it brings me great happiness when I find someone else that shares that joy with me. I am now drowning in an indescribable emptiness, and I don't think that anything will ever be able to truly fill that void.
As a person who hasn't watched AOT yet, I can confirm that I'll appreciate what this series has to offer. Not all journeys have to conclude with a perfect ending.
I mean Eren making everything clearer at the end is very fitting for his character... he does go into everything and explains himself afterwards or not at all

I agree with most points here, and at least the Anine fixed some issues fron the manga ending, though the "EVERYONE LIVES!" still feels a bit plotarmoury for a show where character death is so important, and it feels like Reiners arc was incomplete, despite being one of the main characters, not to mention a bit of End of Evangelion Syndrome with the centipede being, although you can still figure out what happened with a bit of post-watching-analysis. Also, speaking as a Manga writer myself, who HAS scripted the final chapter, before the public has even seen the first chapter, I can absolutely confirm that if you are a planner, as a wrtier, you absolutely end up with potentially controversial endings, but you have to also chose the ending that feels right for the story and for the core story and themes of that story, so that you can work towards that ending from the beginning. So you easily end up in the situation where you go "readers are going to hate this, but it IS the right ending for the story im telling" and at that point you either stick to your guns and tell the story you began telling back in #1, or meander off trying to please a fanbase that will always be divided no matter what, at the cost of the integrity of the story you set out to tell. Not that better ideas cannot happen, but If you have the story planned out, and all the small pieces fit together, it is NOT something you can easily change, once you release your first issue. Now pantsters can feel free to go nuts, but their endings also do sometimes tend to feel disjointed from the story told so far.
AOT's ending concept is great but could have done better, I was so blown away with the climax. Now everything makes sense but what makes sense and what's entertaining are two completely different things that can go hand in hand and the ending chose to be one of these two. GODDAMIT Isayama! How could you put me on edge with a manga!!!

I read the manga ending a year ago and didn't like it & still have mixed feelings on the ending, but I think your take hits the nail on the head on Eren as a character.
Someone pointed out through a video of the end of series vision erren had episode 1. The way they cut it, he saw their land being nuked and every trace of everything he knew erased and woke up shook. My addition He committed to the rumbling because he realized, humans are the problem....all of them as a violent species, except the people he could personally vouch for as good and not violent like armin, Mikasa, his people....the sheep in the pen. He was trying to wipe out all of humanity due to them always finding some way to kill and hurt each other like in his... vision..and worse...his friends. He was trying to stop the future war you see end of series by kulling anyone who could possibly take part in the future, decendents too....rough. Dude lost hope in humanity basically and said "We Ride"
I loved the show at every single moment because i accepted that the story was not mine to tell. I would not change a single thing no matter what. I wish the people hating would have the same realization.
I am a fan of aot and in my opinion the finale was good on point. I think people who did not like it tend to think more logically than emotionally (nothing bad about that). Only problem I have is that how did Mikasa and Levi got in to paths and how did Eren showed Mikasa the other life they could have (he should not be able to manipulate her) ? It should not be possible if I am not mistaken. But even after all this I dedicate my heart to Aot. Anyway who is down to a group therapy after all this ? XDDDD

Otherwise Dina would have done it with Grisha. But when Eren transformed he stated in the paths he could stop the shifters from transforming, but chooses not to. So his power is already way bigger and previous established "rules" don't need to extend to him. Since the rule only gor established by history with less powerfull founder Titans.
I think the ending was great and a satisfying conclusion. I like how the final episode explores an alternate ending to what we got. It shows the ending some people desired but reflected on the consequences that logically come up in that ending. (i.e. Mikasa is transported into another reality where Eren and her flee Paradis and Marley to live a quiet, peaceful life but Paradis is destroyed along with their families and friends) And later on Eren narrates how the ending where the scouts are seen as heroes is the best outcome for his friends and Paradis. Even though it wasn't drawn on paper or animated on screen, we know timelines where Eren wins and Eren loses, where Eren forgets everything and takes his temporary freedom to escape with Mikasa.
Bruh literally everyone is loving the ending, it's not even controversial anymore. AoT was always a masterpiece and manga readers are being called out for their low comprehension.
The ending is perfect, because it's realistic. We all want our favourite characters to live a long and beautiful life, but how realistic is that for everyone? Sure you could argue that Animes aren't realistic to begin with, but i think they beautifully mixed an animer that started out as so crrazy unrealistic and slowly changing it to being more touchable for everyone out there with the war
a controversial ending is better than a perfect ending. fullmetal alchemist was perfect, no one talks about it ever again. I think isayama mentioned he has this childish urge ever since he was a kid, to say"screw this world, just destroy it" so when he created aot, he has this vague nihilistic thought of what the ending will be. But he was ready to end aot around when eren was dead. cause japanese manga industry is so competitive he couldn't see himself writing more. the biggest plot twist of aot is: it got popular, like too popular than isayama has ever imagined. so an ending that was supposed to disappoint a few casual readers in 2013, become this global sensation isayama has no idea how to speak his true opinion. throughout the running of aot, isayama was torn between what the audience want and what he wants, so much so he wanted to give up so many times we might never see a proper ending of aot(kind of like hunter x hunter) but because the thought of making to that final destination, drive him steps by steps toward the finish line. I heard lots of people complaining about aot ending feels like un-polished ideas throwing out and suddenly end, it's because I just dont think isayama can do this for another decade. the ending gives out tons of possibilities, but it's very hard to make everything connects in such a short time. And there's something different from the begining, isayama changed. isayama have always been shifting his favorite character, the initial answer would be armin,then reiner,until finally he admited it's eren. in some sort of way, eren is like the devil,armin is like the angel, they both stand on isayama's shoulder, giving him ideas how to continue the story. eren lives inside isayama's head for longer than he would like to admit, he could've gone with any less controversial routes, remember,isayama reads every comment. but in the end, he remembers why he started aot at the first place, who ever created aot wants violence,wants revenge, so isayama respects the original ending, and just let go. is it perfect?No. but I think isayama is ready to let go of the series, and live his life without aot from here now. the thing is I will never see aot objectively, cause isayama is still alive, and it means a lot too. maybe people in the future can ridicule this as one of the animes that boomers reminiscing fondly but full of plot holes, i dont care. thank you isayama, you're a way better person than you think you are.

You don't know how much brainwashed a person can become by an narcisstic individual. One abuse survivor I know told me she thought their relationship was normal until she got reswued and it took more than a year to reevaluate the 2 years of relationchip and how fucked up and not normal it actually was with the help of her therapist. It is really scary how warped someones sensebof love can become.

Everyone is so wedded to their own theory's of what happened that they can't let go and accept they are wrong is why the ending is controversial, they put forth the elements that they deem relevant in order to support their own conclusions simple as that. We can all take a second to notice here that none of the people criticising the ending have any background in successfully telling a story and have no actual insight into what went on at any point in the creative process that actually matters.

By objectively I asume you actually mean subjectively since no one outside of the people involved in the making of either the manga/anime can actually say with any objective certainty what the actual facts are and this is my point, if you want to take that as some kind of insult it's entirely your perogative, weather its retconing or not literally means nothing, there were going to be plot holes and unanswered questions whichever way they ended it, all that matters to me atleast is that they ended it in a way that they felt satisfied the most people, whether it did or not is another question, and doesn't change the fact that certain people will never like the ending because it didn't end the way they wanted it to.

Every time an ending hater says that " I think eren got a character assassination in the ending" people's response is "well you expected eren to be a chad and mastermind and so many things but eren is just a normal human being with normal brain capability" and then the conversation gets into this cycle of an ending enjoyer talking about how it's wrong to expect eren to be a chad and also trying to prove how eren is just a violent kid. I don't necessarily disagree that expectations pay a role in how you percieve an ending, but I don't think that was the main issue here. It is hard to end a good story, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. Code Geass, FMAB, and Steins;Gate are all anime with good endings, and outside of anime we have LOTR. I don't think anyone wanted a "happy ending" for AoT either - a lot of the theories up to the manga ending was way darker than what we got. For me, AoT has always had a strong story that made a lot of sense (very few/minor plot holes, incredible forshadowing and twists, ...). The ending did not live up to this, with a lot of plot holes, contrivacies, stuff thrown at us last minute, and also retconning some stuff/characters. I would probably have been somewhat disappointed if it ended without taking the "extra step" to try to elevate the story, but it would also have been fine if they just landed it that way - i.e. in a safe way with no major revelations, nothing new introduced. For example, I think FMAB ended somewhat like this. It ended sort of like you would expect, but imo it could have been even better with a few tweaks (such as very few named characters dying towards the end, despite the massive threats they're up against).
I think it can be easily argued that repeatedly being exposed "bad endings" would actually condition people to lower expectations for the ending, not raise them. People would start calling anything good just because it was better by comparison. That's what makes sense to me. I don't think your logic holds up. But even if it does, I don't think that's applicable much to Attack on Titan either. I really think that for AoT, it's a "problem" that arises from the way the story is told: too much is left up to interpretation, or rushed, or infodumped, or told out of chronological order, or just plain up unexplained. What that creates is a massive narrative mess for the viewer to untangle. The lack of clarity in delivery is a core issue with the ending, and people find it so jarring because it's so alien to all of the storytelling uptil the ending, otherwise so much wouldn't be so hotly debated. People just end up untangling that mess very differently, and thus come to different conclusions. I don't think the ending is hated so much because the readers just didn't understand the story, and I think people who liked the story are ignoring a lot of parts of the story (one reason among many). I think the reason anime ending is liked so much better than the mangas' is because it is just a superior product: a completely different medium with so many stellar and gorgeous additions like the music, voice acting, etc. that allow viewers to gloss over the many bad aspects of the writing itself, and that's not a bad thing, it's literally a strength of a medium put to great use. And these anime elements just straight up added a lot more positivity to the viewing experience generally. However, all the manga readers had to have opinions about was the story itself, and if a significantly greater portion of them thought that the ending was bad. Doesn't that say at least something about the story itself? People tend to care about different parts of the same stories to different degrees, I think people who liked the ending to some degree just care about differrent elements of the story than those who hated it, and interpret things drastically differently. I have no problem with these people. That's perfecty awesome. But I don't like when I hear a lot of talk about themes and beautiful ideas from people who liked the ending and that praise specifically feels detached from the core story itself, which makes me think that these people just like that the ending made them think a lot about abstract themes, and it portrayed itself as 'deep'. Has them caring so much about a that was so good for so long actually convinced them to find ways to like the ending it despite it being bad? Do they just want to like it so much that they just don't think too hard about the glaring flaws, or gloss them over with misleading headcannon they got from an analysis video they watched after the fact, and if so, is that sad or admirable? I think it's a sad and complicated situation all around. But that's just what I think. ☕

Eren is flawed and the show clearly depicted that. Just like what he said hinself, he’s a dumbass given by immense power and as silly as it sounds, it is true. He made poor decisions and he really has innate tendencies to rage. He is not a flawed protagonist, he is a flawed human just like everybody else.
As someone who came in completely blind… not having read the manga, not having to wait for the next season to release… and just binging the entire thing in 3 weeks… it’s an incredibly consistent work of art. And i loved the ending.
Listen i hear you. I do hear you. Its been a good journey reading and watching with everyone but it almost feels like a betrayal. I followed month by month beginning in the Historia arc. Read any interview i heard about trying to get answers and this man has been flip floppy since then. The only reason i kept going was because dispite my concerns on him not having Eren and Mikasa kiss during Hannes death. Along with others he kept it together and managed to keep going but i felt that weird shift in his writing towards this episode. It was organic to the way the story goes. Not with the grime endings weve had. Nor with the OVAs. I feel betrayed by the themes and Erens character death. He just forgets his moms words. We're all special because were born in this world. And i still to this day can not understand how mikasa knew he was in the mouth
honestly, i can't think of any other ending or conclusion to aot. ultimately, it was meant to have imperfections bc eren, at the end of the day, was a 19 year old human child with lofty goals but questionable ways to achieve them. both sides of ending haters and lovers fail to see this. he was a child. he's not meant to make everything perfect, nor is what he already did perfect. and i think thats what i love most about the aot conclusion. the ever-underlying theme of "children of the forest" was true to itself in the sense that eren was a child trapped too far in the forest, trying desperately to survive. i can't imagine a better and more realistic ending than this one. thank you isayama!
After rewatching your video, it's kinda odd to say we shouldn't expect anything good especially if we're the paid consumers. Dude, I paid for the anime blu rays and manga volumes since 2016. God knows, how much I spent on Attack on Titan. Of course, I even thought why the hell I spent my money on this had if I know this is the ending. It's like saying just be a blind and dumb consumer, and just consume whatever the hell is in front of you. 🚶
When you have the power to push through and complete the objectives or your goals, you simply push through. Eren used to say keep moving forward but when he in the end stopped at 80% that's what I didn't like. The choice was between the main land people or the island people and at the end of S3 we know what eren wanted For me it is the incomplete rumbling that i don't like, if he had completed the rumbling and died i would have been satisfied

@@bombay_8368 he did by allowing his friends to kill him (letting them keep their powers) and he did have a choice since he sent his Dina after his mom. I think that whole “no choice thing” was a tad bit of a retcon.

I loved Attack on Titan for a long time. I thought the ending was a too huge of a mess, which either doesn't make sense, or where too much was left unexplained and/vague for me to make sense what was happening at the end and why (or maybe a combo, idk). It just left me with more questions than answers (probably partly because of the way it was conveyed) and I think that makes it bad in a conventional sense at least. I do not like the ending. I now just admire AoT as a whole from a distance, it was a nice 10 year journey that means a lot to me, with an extremely messy and hollow conclusion (albeit with some nice thematic imagery). But that's just me. ☕
I never read the manga to not lessen the effect of the anime on me. Some parts of the ending was spoilered for me, but it was unavoidable. From the first episode I though that Eren will probably die at the end, so that was not a big surprise. I do know, I'm a little bit dissapointed, but I can't tell why. Maybe just because it's finished. What actually was really good in this show, how Isayama showed us the world, the worldbuilding element. The picture always got bigger and bigger but always stayed consistent, which is really hard to achieve. When I'd seen the 1st episode of the 4th season, after the first 5 minutes I went back to google, because I was fully convinced that "shit, I'm watching the wrong show". And then it just clicked together. I do agree with you, that Eren's character was somehow in the middle of what most fans think. I've recently read, that he was just 19, when he died, and if I think about it, it's insane how young he was. So the different parts of him, his emotions showed in the last episode totally makes sense. I don't agree with the people saying that Eren could have decided differently, because we don't know if he would have changed something, would he have become the one with powers? That sounds like a time loop and it was a really good plotpoint, when we realised we watched the result of already done decisions in the future. (Just crazy, love it). And at the end I'm not sure he was sane to be honest. And I can understand his wish of dieing and living. Because who would want to live with that amount of sins, but who would want to die at 19 without taking their crush on a date? Eren, and all the other characters were human. Not 2 dimensonal characters, nobody was purely good or bad, everybody was grey. It is a really realistic portrayal of human nature and human history.
I dont think a bad ending ruins a show, but it does leave you unsatisfied. The movie that had a very good ending so far was Dune (part 2). Attack on Titan's ending could have been more satisfying, like Dune's, but, it was very real, specially when it comes to showing us the future and the demise of some characters after the journey's end (these ones hurt the most because they are obscure and doesn't allow you to see how it actually happened, thus robbing you of some time with the character, in this case Mikasa). Was it bad? No, but it wasn't perfect. To me it lacked a bit more, but it doesn't end abruptly so I can get some satisfaction.[ GOT was just lazy. At least in AOT they have really tried and that is enough for me. I would have done things differently but I'm not the author, so I accept what he has done.
