I get all the people in the comments defending their cheap art supplies but objectively, she is right. Also she is talking about art as a career making light fast pieces that should last a long time because you are selling them. If you don't sell your original art then use whatever you can afford. Also, objectively, higher quality art supplies, apart from having a good lightfastness, just perform better. And I can talk from experience. You spend less time laying color, less time blending, they work with you and not against you and you have the right color payoff. And if you get a great result with cheap materials with higher quality ones it would be even better. And that works for every kind of art material. The first time I tried polychromos I never though a color pencil could be that pigmented and soft and didn't know you could layer colors like that. But guys, don't feel bad if you can't afford the higher end brands, the important thing is that you enjoy creating.

Yes, perfectly said! Use what you can afford, but also know that higher prices usually mean better quality (nicer to work with producing better results) and also better lightfastness which means your work will last longer and can be sold at higher prices as "fine art" 😊

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You can't say this often or loud enough - It drives me nuts HOW many people act like there is no difference between pencils for children and real art supplies. They act as if the price for a good pencil is just because it makes it fancy. I have fought so many battles around this topic in so many comment sections.... For an Artist good art supplies are tools not toys. A good Craftsman does also not work with cheap tools, good tools cost money.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 10 месяцев назад
Yes, exactly! There have already been some negative comments that I've had to delete because the misinformation in the comments is just argumentative and not true Higher prices usually mean better quality (easier to work with and produce better results) and are also lightfast so your work will last longer (meaning you can sell your work as "fine art" for higher prices That being said, if people want to use crayola, go for it! Use what you have/what you can afford - but don't try and tell people that it's the equivalent to higher end supplies because it just isn't for so many reasons 😊

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt the amount of confirmation bias is crazy. I get people trying to defend what they can afford but I will never understand why they cant be objective.

@@loati94 I understand why they believe cheap supplies are still fine to use (they are in some cases) but I don't think a lot of people understand the difference between the quality of the two different products because they haven't used the more expensive brands (or they don't understand the importance of lightfastness) So I get where people are coming from - yes, you can create great looking artwork with crayola... But you can create better looking artwork with better supplies, and it will be easier to work with better supplies...and your work will be lightfast if you use better supplies 🤷‍♀️ Some people don't care about those things, and that's totally fine, every artist is different and there's room for everyone to create whatever they want, with whatever supplies they want But this video is specifically about the reasons why more expensive supplies are better for professional artists who sell there work as "fine art" to customers who expect longevity of their work... And people are trying to argue their point which is not really relevant to this video Sorry, That was a long response, but I agree with you! 😊

I so agree with not buying cheap art supplies. I wasted money doing so and once I bought high quality art products, I found that my art skills improved by leaps and bounds.

It makes a huge difference! I always recommend people just start with a few good quality colours, then build up their colours over time, rather than buying a huge cheap set because it just won't work the same 😊

Great Post Kirsty Rebecca. I know what you mean about having to learn all over again when you switch to pro products. Just when you felt like a pro you feel like a complete beginner again. For people who hope to sell their art (or give as gifts) but don't feel quite ready this post will help them make the right decision for them. I'm in that boat and I would rather have fewer good quality supplies I can count on. The Derwent Drawing set is a great quality set too all highly lightfast (only 24 colours in range and mostly earthy muted colours their Chinese white is sooo opaque) you'll just need to possibly add a few primary colours like the ser of 12 polychromos depending on what colours you need. But for people who are just colouring in, or working in a sketchbook with no desire to share their work with anyone (even for gifts) then cheaper products are ok. Better quality will be a nice to have, depending on budget, but not essential.

Yes, I agree! It's better to start out with less of a good quality pencil, than 100 cheap poor quality pencils! The Derwent drawing are some of my favourite pencils - especially the white and black 😊

Hi do you sell your pan pastel set in AU? I saw there is only 1 set per amazon and ships from Japan (15 days to wait) afraid of the timing as well as shipping as it might break some of the pans

Yes, The Art Shop in Victoria sells them online (it's also the cheapest place to get them!) theartshop.com.au/products/pan-pastel-general-realism-set-20-with-kirsty-rebecca

i started out with the cheap supplies, and took photos or scanned anything i liked and still do that even with better supplies. art has been made with cheap supplies for years by people and sometimes still sells for a lot of money even tho it might not last 50-100 years, most people dont care if something fades a bit, consider it part of the art and unless you tell a customer how the art should be displayed too last as long as possible, they often dont😕 when it comes down to longevity, oil paints are prob the best but sadly most supplies do have longevity problems if not stored and displayed properly☹
@davester1432
@davester1432 10 месяцев назад
"most people don't care if something fades a bit"- I disagree. The people who actually buy art DO care about longevity, very much. They might not verify how much to expect before the purchase, but they will definitely care when the work starts to obviously fade after a year or two. I make photographic art, and there are two kinds of inkjet printers to print with- ones that use dye-based inks (like most people own), and ones that use archival pigments. I would never sell a photo of mine that was printed with dye-based inks. I'd feel like I was cheating the customer.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 10 месяцев назад
I totally understand what you're saying, and there is a market out there for people who don't care about longevity of the artwork they buy! In my experience, the customers I have definitely care about the longevity of the work and they are paying high prices for work that is lightfast Most people who are buying "fine art" for higher prices expect the work to be lightfast But again, if you sell your work for less, and you tell people it's not lightfast and to make sure they frame it behind museum glass etc to help with fading, then that's totally up to you PS: Oil paints are not any more lightfast than other supplies if they are made with high quality pigments. It's just that there are a lot of supplies that are not lightfast in the same category (for example, you can buy cheap craft acrylics or Crayola coloured pencils that aren't lightfast, but you can also buy better quality acrylic and pencils that are lightfast and they will match the longevity of oil paints). It's a bit of a myth that people perceive oil paintings as superior quality when that's just not true anymore
@fuzzydragons
@fuzzydragons 10 месяцев назад
I've never had anyone care about longevity when I bring it up.obvs this is going to vary from person to person, creator to creator, but there are just some mediums that no matter the money spent on them, the colours are going to fade unless protective measures are taken and even then, some will still fade. Even with me using copics, the markers will fade and customers still know this and buy them. Probably just the group of people I sold stuff too lol. Sign paintings are usually only expected to last the life of a business and with tattoo designs coloured with markers, they prob fade at the same rate as some tattoo ink colours 😛 and with coloured pencil work, most of the colours/brands will eventually fade with out any kind of protection (most people cannot afford the really high end ones) and even with protection, they don't usually last 100+ years without a bit of change. I do tell people how they should hang any art done in coloured pencils, and thankfully I don't use a lot of the main colours that fade. But the art market can be fickle, with the small buyers and the big ones. No one buys a Banksy expecting it not to change as time goes on since they are made with basic spray paint on usually not the cleanest surface, they are buying the name basically. People do want to know what they are buying, and along as you are honest with them, people can be okay with that and will pay for it. Or they can get a print, printed with the right ink that might stay colourfast better than some supplies will.

@fuzzydragons
@fuzzydragons 10 месяцев назад
I also think part of it is the area I am in.coloured pencil work doesn't go for a lot of money, even if you use the "good"pencils. It's more of a painting/watercolour/sculpture area where the money is usually made. coloured pencils are still thought of as a kids thing here. Simple one color lino prints do better. If I sell overseas I do mention that the pencils will fade over time and need proper protection, but I honestly have never had anyone care *shrug

In my opinion you missed one importent advantage of the more expensive colored pencils: they are available open stock. Even for me who does art more because of my mental health the open stock availablility saves so much money in the long run. I can replace my favorite colours easily and do not have to buy a whole new set. Also this gives me more flexibility whith getting like a 48 set and a couple of additional colours... Or I can buy only the darker tones of the Derwent Lightfast as I really don't like to work with the lighter colours from this set.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 9 месяцев назад
Yes, I should have mentioned that! I think I mentioned buying less colours but didn't specifically say that you can buy single colours which is very helpful, especially if you just wanted to try out a new medium - you could just buy black and white and create a monochrome piece to see if you like it before investing in more colours 😊
@fizbanpernegelf5363
@fizbanpernegelf5363 9 месяцев назад
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt I am a little sceptical about only black and white in a new medium, especially colored pencils. But that is because the whites can be very different. Just compare the white from the Derwent Drawing to the Polychromos regarding opacity. Personally I would prefere to work on my ability to pick the right value with 3 to 5 blues (one of them being dark indigo / prussian blue or a blueish paynes gray depending on how they are named) from light to dark in addition to white and black. Might be because I like the results more and with that it is easier to stick to practice. Just a psychological trick xD. Oh! There is another thing I was surprised about: you mentioned the Prismacolours as sets with a few Lightfast pencils but neither the Derwent Colorsoft, nor the Derwent Procolour or the Caran d'Ache Pablo where named. There are a couple of nice lightfast ones in these sets.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 9 месяцев назад
@@fizbanpernegelf5363 yeah, the theory behind getting just black and white was more suggesting that you buy a couple of pencils to try - so you could pick red, yellow, and blue and play around with those or just one colour to try it out (you can still create some amazing work with one or two colours) so you don't necessarily have to pick black and white - I was just suggesting not to buy the whole set straight away if you're not sure whether you'll like the medium Yes, I mentioned Prismacolor because they are one of the most popular brands of coloured pencils - but there are quite a few other brands that have some good lightfast colours like Pablo, Procolor, Lyra Rembrandt, and even water-soluble pencils used dry. I couldn't mention every single brand that exists, so I just stuck to the top brands that are the most popular 😊

Love your channel but I have done some fantastic work with Crayola pencils. I realize it’s not lightfast. That said it gave me confidence to purchase really good pencil sets. Without trying Crayola I’d of never bought better products! Just my opinion!
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 10 месяцев назад
Definitely makes sense! I think if you're aware that they aren't lightfast, and they don't work the same as more expensive brands, then thats a great option to start with! It all depends on what your goals are in the end 😊

That's totally fine too! The main thing is that if you're selling your work, make sure your customers know that your work might fade then it's all good! Use whatever supplies you like 😊
