Why Bill The Butcher Is One Of The Most Terrifying Villains In Film History

Gangs of New York's Bill the Butcher is considered one of Daniel Day-Lewis's best roles. Yes, there are wonderful performances from the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, and Martin Scorsese's direction can't be out done. But Daniel Day-Lewis brought honesty and a ruthlessness to Bill the Butcher that no one else could match. But what exactly makes Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York so terrifying?

While filming, Lewis would run around New York in character picking fights with random people. The biggest thing in this film is the Draft Riots which were kind of lost in history. I also heard he stayed in character on shooting breaks and would fuck w the costars too. De Niro had thr same issues filming Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, they literally become the character.

I have a theory about that-of the 5 Best Actor nominees that year (Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson, Adrian Brody, Michael Caine, Nicholas Cage), all were previous winners except Brody. It was as if the Academy was spreading the joy. (I’m not putting down Brody’s performance by any measure-that was a really strong year for the Academy. Case in point, that was when Nicholas Cage put in a career-best performance in Adaptation)

I honestly can't think of a better actor. The man transforms his voice and countenance in every role. He brings 100%- 100% of the time. De Niro has great films, but he's done several on cruise control too. Same with Val Kilmer. Frankly, a lot of great actors, like Tom Hanks, are just naturally likeable. They're talent leads to success, until eventually you've seen their whole playbook. Good, but not mind-blowing. With Day-Lewis, you never hear his real voice until he does an interview.

Dude has 30 roles on IMDb. 6 oscar nominations that’s 20% nomination rate and won three so 10%. Only seven actors have won three or more times Meryl Streep 94 roles 21 noms 3 wins. So slightly higher nomination rate bite far far far smaller win rate at about 3.5% Jack Nicholson 78 roles 12 noms 3 wins lower non rate at 15% and win rate about 4% Frances McDormand 69 roles 6 acting nominations* 3 wins 9% nomination rate 4.5% win rate *she also has a best picture win but that’s not acting but worth noting Ingrid Bergman 54 roles 7 noms 13% winning three 6% Walter Brennan notably the first actor to get to three Oscar wins buuuut 244 roles 4 noms 3 wins about 1% not exactly amazing and to clarify I’ll also note the Oscar’s started in 1927 so I’ll minus roles before 1927 and television roles and that puts him at a rounding up 2% And the Queen of Oscars Katherine Hepburn clocking in with 6 Oscars and 12 nominations for 53 roles 23% nom rate and 12% win rate So yeah Daniel Day Lewis is only behind Hepburn on the Oscar front. Obviously that’s not the only metric but definitely worth noting. Daniel Day Lewis was just reported as the highest paid actor in 2022 earning 82million 50million more than the next person per media Mass. So fairly certain he’s doing ok

Eh... this performance was top notch, no question, and Bill is a great character... But I've always contended that the greatest literary villain to have yet been portrayed correctly is Captain Hook. Neverland is a children's fantasy when kids don't have to grow up... and James Hook hunts them there to shred their dreams. He's worst than Freddy Krueger, more awful than Leatherface, and far more intrusive than Bill the Butcher. In the safest space of all, Captain Hook predates children to turn them into enslaved adults. No one gives this character his chops, or at least, not yet.

I think something that Gangs of New York does a good job at is reminding American viewers that we're a nations of immigrants and what was considered a "real American" has always shifted through time just like that last scene with the graves overlooking a changing world. Isn’t every nation a nation of immigrants then? What does that even mean? I’m not trying to be rude or anything but I hear that and I don’t get it because no other country an American born in America is not an immigrant same as a Peruvian is not an immigrant. Maybe their parents came from somewhere else but that would mean no one is from nowhere or we’re only from where we’re born. The way he is able to balance ruthlessness, sociopathy, and respect where he knows he has to give it is the stuff of legend for actors. There’s a reason why so few people will ever be able to match his level. Any movie he’s a part of is instantly made significantly better no matter how good it would’ve been without him.

I have even started showing them pieces of this movie because, even though it is mythologized in its characters, it is not mythologized in its characterization. It perfectly encapsulates the sentiment and the atmosphere of the country from 1845-1865, much better than most movies that attempt to portray a time period.

@@salvadorromero9712 Well they generally don't think there is rock music playing at battles during this time period, if that is what you are concerned about lol All joking aside, most of them probably don't even know what presentism is, they aren't philosophy or history students. They are nursing, automotive, CS, and primary school majors, for the most part. So the difficulty is getting them to even pay attention at all. I'm not worrying about them thinking that the movie is an exact copy of what the time period looked like. Relevancy is the most important part in a college history survey class. I will sacrifice some things for them to pay attention. Don't worry, I also show them Townsend and Sons videos where a guy makes salt pork with traditional cookware in a traditional kitchen. Of course the forty hours of lecture content is where the instruction takes place. This is just for the "feeling" of the time period and so they have something to look at other than me and slides.

Good they will understand that the Know Nothings had legitimate concerns and many if those played out as they feared they would to the detriment of the nation
@JonathanMartin884

@@David-bf6bz The only legitimate concern the Know-Nothings had was that slavery would expand, but even that was because they didn't want black people in more states. Is that the concern you were referring to? Seems more of a racist concern to me. What were their legitimate concerns as you see them?
@David-bf6bz
@David-bf6bz Год назад
@@JonathanMartin884you are overlooking so much. Unchecked immigration would lead to depressed wages and worker exploitation... check, would lead to urban spraw and expanded slums ... check... would lead to ethnic enclaves that reduced integration and adoption of American values... check would lead to US involvement with Europe's political problems including US boys dieing for European monarchs ... check, the Catholic church setting up parallel education and cultural systems... check... expansion of federal power at the cost of the state and citizens check... yeah so basically they nailed it

There's an urban legend--one that I believe as well--about Daniel Day-Lewis. Story goes that you can never, ever speak ill of Daniel Day-Lewis because he's SO good at acting, that he could be anywhere at any time and anyone--kind of like a shapeshifting doppelganger. You could be talking to your best friend, nothing seems weird or out of place, then you say something bad about DDL and suddenly he leaps out and gets you! Because it wasn't ACTUALLY your best friend, it was Daniel Day-Lewis acting like your best friend and he's so good you couldn't tell the difference.

Bill the Butcher's quotes, morale code, fighting scenes, nationalism, even his presense with the 10 gallon hat is epic! He looks like an ass kickin evil American president and the world should be thankful he's not real. He's definitely up there with the greatest villians ever!

I don't see him as the villain. He saw the downfall of his city, and country as a whole, and did what he saw fit to hold onto what he loved. Wish we had the balls to live up to that kind of legacy today to save this country.

Xenophobia is a term that's tossed around too freely these days by people who don't really understand it. Bill isn't remotely afraid of foreigners, but he does see them rightfully so as a threat to the American way of life. It'd be more accurate to say he dislikes Catholicism as his right hand man McGloin, as well as Amsterdam are both Irish, yet its not an issue. America is to this day, a very young nation, but more so a century ago when the characters of this movie would have memories of their family fleeing the Roman Catholic Church. Bill's concern, as well as many 'Natives', was that these immigrants were bringing that faith to the New World. Honestly, I see Bill more as an anti-hero than a straight up villain.

@shaeisgae8952 2 месяца назад
Phobia in this context doesn't mean a fear of, it means an aversion to. when we talk about xenophobia or homophobia we're not saying you're afraid of immigrants or gay people (although that is sometimes the case) we're saying you hold illogical negative beliefs about those groups.

Sir Daniel Day Lewis is the best gift for the history of cinema at least for the last six decades and also for us for his amazing way for acting , you can think in Pacino , De Niro , Bale , Pesci Nicholsom or others on Mad Butcher caracther ... Nobody yes Nobody can play Butcher like DDL the voice , smail, anxiety , tension , the rage explosions , the maneirism and his face expressions rom Daniel are Pure Class acting !

If you sync the opening fight scene with the song "Hard Knock Life" from Annie it's creepy. You have to start the song the moment the rival gangs start charging at each other. It seems like they were made for one another, like Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz. Try it!
