The only reason why we East Africans don’t win every single cycling event is because of financial constraints. If we had the money, we’d turn these sports into the marathon and other track events and win every single event as well as being the top 10.
Thank you for this feature on our beloved Bini. This is definitely as you put it a watershed moment. The only thing I can compare it to is the 1996 Olympics when Haile Ghebreselassie won the 10,000m. I was in Addis the day he won and all I can say is, the absolute pandemonium that engulfed the country was magical. That’s exactly what’s happening right now for Eritrea. A few facts you might enjoy knowing about Bini: -Winning Gent - Wevelgem, he beat Christophe Laporte, who is a pretty solid sprinter when he's not lauching a teamate like Wout van Aert, and is the current European Champion. -On his stage win on the Giro against Matthieu van der Poel, you can see van der Poel stoping his sprint a few meters before the end line and raising a thumbs up. That's pretty telling of much dominating he was on that sprint. And if you know who Matthieu van der Poel is, you know that's a pretty huge deal. -When he came back to cycling after his eye injury, he used a helmet on which was painted a cork with boxing gloves. How badass is that? -He has won a third stage on this year's Tour de France. I'm guessing this video was made between win two and win three. He has now such a strong lead that unless he drops out of the race, there is a really good chance he will bring the green jersey all the way to Nice. Which he could possibly have done with the ciclamino jersey in the Giro if he didn't injured himself.

Good video, but I've got a couple of minor corrections - Bini won his three African junior level titles at 17 - Bini was the first rider born in the 2000s to win a professional race, not just African. - Bini signed for Intermarche before the U23 world championships (after Delko folded) - Bini was not the first Eritrean to join a WT team. First Eritrean was Daniel Teklehaimanot when he joined Orica-GreenEDGE in 2012 (Merhawi Kudus, Natnael Berhane and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier were also WT riders at that time) I'm looking forward to see how good he can become. He's always had a good head for positioning, but he's really improved in being assertive in maintaining his position and it's really paying off.
