Love to watch your little catch ups. I can just imagine Pat getting frustrated watching football. I have to agree with you, our generation weren’t has entitled has people are now. We were a generation that when we had saved for our deposits for our home, we made due with second hand furniture until we could afford what we wanted. Now they have to have everything. There is my little rant😀🫶🌺

We were like you Trevor and Pat, we worked long hard hours to own our own home. We had no holidays or meals out or anything fancy. We never borrowed any money, we only had the mortgage which we paid off when we were 48. If we didn’t have the money we didn’t buy it simple as that. A lot of people these days seem to get themselves into so much debt because they want everything now. It’s a crazy existence for sure 😮x

It's a debt culture now Susan, at one time we would have been ashamed to admit we had bought something on tic, now it's normal practice, and were supposed to have caused it all.

I remember seeing an old documentary about 'slum' areas... Our house ( 3 bed rented terrace )was cold, we had one coal fire in the living room. When I was a child the iron was plugged into the light fitting ( one bakelite socket in each room ) lino floors with home made rag rugs, outside toilet ( cludgy) and small yard with coal hole..There was a parrafin heater in the bathroom to keep the pipes from freezing.. as years went by the gas fire was installed and a rewire meant bedrooms could be warmed with a heater. We were clean and tidy, the house was clean, didn't have a lot but nobody did. No cars we walked everywhere . No holidays... I was in my late 30's before I had a passport....I was encouraged to save, as were my siblings and never get into debt. Now then... slum??? We all lived the same, no keeping up with the Jones'... No Chinese tat, we saved for what we needed.... Sadly the 'gig' economy is responsible for the younger generation not being able to progress . Throwaway jobs, throwaway clothes , throwaway plastic..instant gratification ..and lack of self discipline, that's the problem.

In schools do they teach our children how to handle their money carefully budget. I can remember getting savings stamps at school but can't remember what for. Our generation remember ration books and very tight budgets, and we learnt from this.
@trevorpat-lifeontherun

They would probably teach them the best way to borrow. Saving stamps were either sixpence or a shilling. 20 one shilling stamps filled your book and that was £1. Took some doing.

I agree with every word you said about “ the good old days”. They were not. My late husband and me had to struggle to pay our mortgage of £8.10 shillings per week plus £1. 10 shillings for the rates. We bought our house for £3: 600 pounds in 1964. That was a lot of money then. Thank you for a,lovely vlog every day.

Great talk Pat and Trevor. I know we lived within our means. Now a days people have no problem living on credit but then our governments are like that spending money the country doesn’t have. We’ve lived in two places, a house in town and then our now home which is eighty acres and had both paid off long before the mortgage was ended. Take care.

We still have a small amount to pay on mortgage and they keep saying don't over pay, but with all the interest rates keep going up we have had no choice but to pay more, surly they give us the payment they must know it is going to be payed off quicker so it's there fault?

Our Tracey and David have kept paying off extra on their mortgage each year, which brings the capital sum down and so monthly repayments come down as a result. Not sure I understood the last bit of your comment Jackie.

I get frustrated when younger generations moan about boomers & housing, theres plenty of property for sale out there but from what ive seen on tv interviews etc, they are completely unrealistic! They want their first property to be a nice little house or large flat in sought after suburbs bordering popular cities etc! I'm 44 and got on the property ladder with my partner 20 yesrs ago and we dtarted with an ex local authority house on the edge of a council state that has a reputation locally, then we moved to a better area to a 1960's semi that didnt seem to have been decorated since about 1978 and recently we got a detached house in a peaceful suburb that needed little doing to it. Nobody wants to start off with something very modest or that needs work doing to it, they just want a really desirable house or flat right from the start. My mum is 73 and widowed and yes she could ideally do to downsize but she wouldn't mentally cope with it aa she's got issues and her bungalow is still worth between £265 to £300k so its still not going to help younger buyers. Plus it would need re-altering because the 2nd bedroom was turned into a dining room and the far wall knocked through and a big conservatory / sun room added on to the property so its currently only a 1 bed even though it is large enough for a small family to live in it.
@samm4265
@samm4265 День назад
The UK has a shortage of affordable housing. You were lucky to be able to buy a council house. The problem for the next generation, there is a shortage of council houses for rental that allow the right to buy. Priority of social housing allocation goes to illegal migrants and refugees first, British single mums second anyone else has no chance. Private house prices are unattainable on most wages. You now see many youngsters living at home with parents well into their 30-40s or as homeless house surfers. However one cannot blame boomers, if todays generation were all born in that time they would also have took advantages of what was on offer at that time. Times have changed and adaptions have to be made. The governments poor management and greed is at fault for the decline of the country and the shortage of affordable housing.
@bigwideworld387
@bigwideworld387 День назад
@@samm4265 I wasn't a council tenant, my house was a private sale and I don't know how far back previously before that it was a council property. I've never lived on benefits and that house was privately bought through an estate agent for £65k I recall as that was what an end terrace like that went for. No luck was involved, that was the market value of the property at that time! On Rightmove, currently in the northern town I live in, there's 93 homes for sale under £120k, there's 122 for £130k or less so where's the shortage? My nearest city is Hull and there's 560 properties for sale under £120k! There's 270 under £90k - where is the shortage? You've got to buy what you can afford, pensioners can't solve the issue, many of them have houses that aren't going to be affordable even if they agreed to downsize! As said before, my mum's house would cost someone at least £265k, where I live there's quite a lot of people pensioners but their houses would be worth anything from £260 to £400k. How does selling a house of value that help first time buyers? They can't afford it and suddenly smaller homes get more expensive because people are demanding that pensioners downsize - it doesn't work does it!
