BMW's design has been too conservative since Chris Bangle left. Instead they've been adding more models, often overloaded with tech that doesn't make it the ultimate driving machine it once was 10+ years ago.
Yes, thank you! It's a sad time for them when mainstream brands like Hyundai and even some Toyotas are producing more interesting, sexier cars. Albert Biermann even works for the Hyundai group now, leading their N division.
I think it's opposite, they ditched key design features like the small kidney grills, round headlights, straight lines from front to rear(like the E38), etc

Gizawar lol you have used the worse example to talk about differences: take a look at those cars again, the exterior design is practically the same thing, there’s only a few differences (for example the front lights: the C class has one line while the E class has 2) that take them apart, but a ordinary person quickly looking at them both wouldn’t see a difference. The interiors are different because the C Class is an older model, but if take a look of all new Mercs, the interior is exactly the same (BMW is doing it too though, so it’s a matter of taste)
Gizawar Your first sentence doesn't make sense at all. You repeated what he said. And yeah Mercedes all look the same. If I didn't watch carwow I would never know the difference from outside between different Mercedes models because they all look exactly the same and so do their interiors. In fact, BMW, Mercedes, and Audi all have same interiors in their different models. I personally like BMW's best because they put more effort in designing an interior whereas the other two just slapped screens everywhere
I love how this has not aged well at all, BMW is making some of the only EV's that are actually geared towards auto enthusiasts, and taking more market share daily.

Even as a millennial, my favorite BMWs are the 80s models because their fun, quirky, and small. I think BMW has lost a lot of that and replaced it with useless tech and big grilles.
@@demolisherOfMoney Not completely. Take a look at EVERY BMW model. There are some common parts and designs that are identical, right from the 1 Series up to the new 8 Series. All BMW's have the same steering wheels, door handles, air vents and button stacks, as well as almost identical shifter area designs. Personally, I think the design is attractive. But it just feels wrong when your 30K 1 Series looks the same as your 150K 8 Series.
@The Truth Exactly. Even on the inside still looks the same. In those cars people want the latest shiny gadgets, instead its the same old panel with a screen.
You mean all the plastic that rots including the coolant tank that kills engines. Or door seals. You never have to replace these things on a Japanese car. Great cars to lease. At least the warranty will still apply. BMW - Bring Your Wallet

They have been doing that for years, since the 90s in fact. The whole M Sport line for people who want the sport appearance but don't want the excess bagage of a performance car.
@@kylesoler4139 My last two BMW's both have had the sport suspension on them. It is a different suspension than stock (lower and stiffer) the earlier one was a stand-alone option, the other was part of the M-sport package. For just looks they had the sport line package. Also not everyone wants an M car as a daily driver but want more driver involvement than you get with a Camry or even a base BMW.
They used a BMW engine, the most reliable thing BMW makes. It's the electronic stuff that's a problem. The problem with the Supra ( I think that's what you're referring to) is that it doesn't come in manual.

They already do, The transmission in most BMW 2 series is a similar AISIN transmission found in Corollas, Camrys and RAV4s, isn't it ironic.? BMW in my opinion has to go back to it's ruts and make affordable, reliable, fun to drive cars like they used to, back in the day.
@George L Well, that is the good thing with BMWs so many idiots drive them, that there are plenty of second hand spare-parts in almost mint condition from otherwise totalled cars.
Less fake vents, less fake exhausts, less fake exhaust interior sounds and smaller grills... But apparently the Chinese market loves all those things, hence the design...
For the pretentious, they appreciate the fact that BMW innovates their ego so they buy based off of impressing strangers. With that said, I think BMW will do just fine by catering to these people alone.
Same thoughts. My go to weekend car is a Lexus IS350 - you get the performance and luxury, with the added bonus that it won't fall apart after a few years. BMW needs to stop their planned obsolescence tactic and bring back the famous quality craftsmanship that Germans are known for.
Anything I’ve read suggests you’re out of touch..Mercedes has lost quite a bit on quality/durability in recent years, recently recovered somewhat but not on the BMW tip. Interesting that you don’t know this..
Edward Norton I repair my Porsche as well. However it doesnt compare to the ease of working on a Toyota or Chevy. ( this is changing however as the mainstream cars are getting more complicated)
It’s different, it’s extreme, and honestly it’s for the best. Unfortunately BMW cannot keep the same pig-nose size grill forever, and it’s been that image for a very long time. We live in a time now where the only things that succeed change at a drastic rate.
@@jordanmiller6374 The X7 has been noted to be quite the looker in person the larger grill works really well with it, and is robust and elegant. The only model I would have a bit of a dislike for would be their 7series because it's not executed well doesn't fit the design ergonomically. But the majority/rest of their portfolio are nice, 1,2, 3,5,8, X models they all have reasonably proportionate grills.
@Pepsi Stove That's funny my 5 series that I haven't had a single issue with is made in germany. Best car I've ever driven hands down. Nothing even comes close.
Robin Östringer of course this is global marketplace and distinct markets do offer different models than in other markets. In Europe, China, and USA/Canada there are both Japanese and German and plenty of the Japanese cars are either fast, premium sports cars or fast, premium luxury sedans.
Kurt Wollermann Definitely more reliable but they build for that and if you drive them you can tell the difference also the electronics in japanese compare to a german car are like comparing a Nokia brick to a iPhone reliable but very simple
The biggest issue BM has is their too expensive after sale service and not very customers oriented personnel. The way BM treats it's customers repeals many (including me) people to buy some other brands.
When you try to have driving dynamics like Porsche and luxury like Mercedes, you have to save money somewhere, looks like it was reliability and build quality.
They're made out of plastic and charge ridiculous amounts for those plastic parts. So they fall apart after a few years. Meanwhile Audi quality is top notch and Mercedes is very good.
My neighbor across the street is a mechanic. Him and his spouse both own BMW. Does his own work. But it still cost him as much as his monthly payment just to service the car with the parts. He sold it during the Covid Quarantine. With the money, he bought a SUV. And a vintage 'project' car. And he's STILL saving.
BMW: - Reliability issues; - Costly maintenance; - Ditched rear wheel drive for front wheel drive, alienating enthusiasts; - Jumped on the SUV bandwagon, further alienating enthusiasts to please soccer moms. BMW used to be the best car you bought if you wanted a daily driver that would put a smile on your face, nowadays they make bloated Americars and bland front wheel drive "grocery getters" with a meaningless badge for IKEA-dwelling, cinnabon-munching, khaki-weaking soy-milk affictionados.

Just look at the evolution of interiors between BMW and Mercedes. BMW only does minor facelifts on their interiors while Mercedes completely redesigns them. Speaking of interiors, sometimes it is so hard to tell them apart just looking at their interiors.
7:43 In my opinion that is totally incorrect, what made Mercedes more popular now is what made BMW more popular in the early 2000s. Innovation and a good design, not more models. That is actually something that is currently being harmful to them, they have way to many cars that are really similar and confusing for customers. So whist more models might boost sales in the short term, BMW has to face the reality that they have to start to innovate again, like they once used to.
Yeh exactly, Tesla is doing quite well and they don’t offer many models. I do think they need better designers. The new 3 and 7 series look terrible imo.
bmw has itself admitted to this fact on multiple occasions. they have compromised on units to get profits by selling fewer model variants. it is very much a true statement.
I think you are wrong. Mercedes just squeezed every drop out of ic engines. Bmw made electric cars merc made 6.3L engines for rich sporty chinese buisnessmen and maybach kinda cars for the relaxed chinese buisnessmen. Bmw heavily invested in mexico before trump, build one of the most modern factories, invested in britain with mini before brexit. All in all many smaller errors and merc was just... these are the fossil years baby! (Don’t know if the electric smart is any good)
Lukas Murmann and neither is the fact that the BMW logo is meant to resemble a spinning propellor true, that’s been debunked by the firm for ages, this video is filled with lazy research
Calvin, I did some research and I’d say the spinning propeller has been thrown into question, but not debunked. Unfortunately, the person who designed the logo and the people who approved it are no longer here to clarify the matter.
The reason BMW became so huge and desirable is because the company had a mission statement to build the ultimate driving machine and they delivered decade after decade. There was a point in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s that it seemed as if the brand no longer cared about that and only wanted to increase sales and appeal to bigger markets. Though somewhat successful, everybody drives a bmw now, not just purists and wealthy elitists, it has cost the brand it’s reputation and original appeal. I hope the brand goes back to making truly driver focused cars again. I used to be a huge fan but I no longer desire to buy a new BMW these days.

Mortgage loan for real estate from 7% per annum for up to 30 years (at the government level, recently considered the question that the banks of Russia will plan a significant reduction in the mortgage rate over the next three years), you can take a consumer loan of up to 100 thousand $ for up to 5 years and build your own house of brick and concrete, and not from plywood and insulation, as in the United States for $300 thousand! People way overhype "German engineering" just because they don't wanna admit Japan makes the best cars in the world. Most German cars are pretty unreliable.
Visited BMW sales lot for a BMW 5 Series... all looked exactly alike. All wheels among many other things looked exactly alike between cars and now ABSOLUTELY boring! No sporty look. Complete turnoff and I am a lifelong BMW driver.
I have driven bmw my whole life and I’m honestly thinking of buying a new Mercedes just because their interior looks so much better and modern.. reminder I have had almost every bmw even the m5 and the latest x5..WE NEED A BETTER LOOKING INTERIOR BMW PLEASE!!
Sasa Lolic because it hasn’t been around since 2005. Look at the buttons under the screen, some of them are almost identical to what bmw was putting in the 1 series over 10 years ago
Manuals make up an incredibly small portion of the car market. Getting butt hurt over a method of shifting that is slower, less economical, and less daily driveable in a market that always is demanding faster, more economical, and more comfortable vehicles, is just plain pointless. We as car enthusiasts do want a manual 3 series, without having to get an M3, but you have to understand that when a car company looks at their bottom line, they're going to go with what will sell the most of. Not what 2% of the market wants. I'm not a BMW fanboy or anything, in fact, I am quite the opposite of that. I agree that the brand has lost their edge, but, manuals don't sell, and I don't blame them for not offering it in the majority of their models anymore. The 8-Speed boxes in them now are excellent and have been widely regarded as excellent for years now.
TriggeredLmao My gen 1 X1 has no dipstick, but also can’t be put into neutral if it won’t start. Hurts watching your car be 4 wheel skidded onto a flatbed with a winch and bounced off at dealer because it won’t roll.
@@DaDude999 wow that is horrible. They are designed to become a money pit to the consumer. Thats why I now despise the brand. I mean they already made money off the sale of vehicle. Now they also want to do any little service to it to overcharge you 3x of what you would pay on a Chevy. No love for the automobile industry just straight up GREED.
@@NorceCodine they sell 50x the cars Ferrari makes in the same time frame. You see their cars everywhere. Also Ferraris are brand for the ultra rich. People who don't care about a few thousand in maintenance. BMWs and Mercedes are supposedly for the working not so rich class. People who just saved up or earn enough for these cars yet they get charged outrageous prices. I have good income and I'm not an idiot to keep getting milked that wsy
Great White North I agree. I repair these for a living and hate to see one coming g off a flat bed like that as I know in going to have to remove panels and crawl underneath to manually put it into neutral.
Most people are idiots that follow like sheep. I have driven a Mercedes on the Autobahns across Germany and the drive is not the same as my daily 5 series. The satnav is crap the automatic braking system (as opposed to the the steering vibration in the BMW) when you touch a line has to be switched of evertime you get into the car which highly annoying.
Hahaha It's surviving, BMW exports vehicles made here in Brazil. I just don't know if the Amazon and the planet will survive with progressive ideology. The Amazon looks like a city inhabited by NGOs from Brazil and other countries, doing what they want and need not explain anything.
To summarize: They’re expensive to buy. Pretty, but not that pretty. Break down all the time. Cost twice as much to fix. You see them everywhere on the road, and they depreciate to half they’re original price after like five years (if you’re lucky). You would have more fun lighting your money on fire.
If anyone was financially smart but wanted to scratch that BMW itch, they would try to get the best lease they could and then walk away at the end of the lease. To buy it would put the owner at a severe risk of having a money pit that would financially hurt. Toyota, unfortunately, is more reliable and it's luxury brand, Lexus.
@@jonny5777 Why is that the go to for limp BMW fanatics? "you can't afford one" is pretty childish. It also speaks to the brand image problem they have; as well as the logic that Porsche follows with maintenance (money is no object). BMW maintenance over the life span has grown so fast, that a lot of BMW's are being totalled out for the smallest accidents (which is also why the resale value tanks after 3 years).
Lol i had a 03 745i over 10yrs ago and my wife got a 2015 535xi in 2016 and it felt like the same exact car for the most part... after that 745 i said i would nvr touch a bmw again but she insisted... after a few water pumps, oil seals, and numerous problems she's saying the same nvr again.. i can't imagine how bad reliability will get with the complexity of new tech if they keep sweeping the real issues underneath the rug
I was lucky enough to make a couple honest friends who are Ukrainian and Romanian and specialize in European cars. Hell they even let us make payments.🙏
The problem for me was that they were trying to innovate just for the sake of innovation and not because they'd even found a problem that needed fixing. Removing oil dipsticks and telling customers that their new change intervals are 10,000 miles with no way to check if your levels are getting low in that time, turns to settling lawsuits about failing timing chain tensioners and entire engines.
They used to make great cars with effective engineering and high quality. Now they're just a status symbol for people to show off how good their credit score is. They drive like refrigerators compared to their earlier cars.
Styling. Mercedes designers have really stepped up the look of the brand in the past 10 years. 20 years ago Mercedes in the US anyway was looked upon as a somewhat stodgy expensive vehicle much like Cadillac back then.
Having owned 3 of them from 1989-1998, the last being a M Roadster, I can’t remember the last time I was impressed enough with their product to consider buying another.
*Watches Scotty Kilmer once, never owned a BMW in their life.* “Trash brand, never been innovative, plastic computers I’ll stick to my Toyota Corolla!”
trigolis I love Scotty’s channel and have watched him since he was doing burnouts in his intros. Not knocking what he’s saying at all but I am knocking those fan boys that have never owned a BMW but want to trash it not knowing the history of the company.
Richie Hart 😂 Yeah man I’ve read some craziness in these comment sections just total ignorance. Pretty sure most don’t even know what Alpina is, they’ll tell you it’s a stereo company.
The Lamborghini Urus, Audi RSQ8, Bentley Bentayga Speed, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid would all like to have a word with you. Quicker, faster, and better handling than most "Performance" sedans and coupes.
Good Topic. I own older 2004 BMW, and haven't been impressed to buy new or upgrade my model. Have spent serious time looking at other Brands replace replacement. Even looked at buying and having custom mods made to get what i want.
By decreasing the production of manual transmissions, replacing hydraulic steering with electric and replacing naturally aspirated engines with turbo charged and having a premium price margin, they lost a portion of the enthusiasts crowd. On the other hand their lack of innovation and gimmicks turned away the luxury buyers.
The E46 and E39 were the high water mark for BMW design. The rot set in after Wolfgang Reitzle left the company. Freed from restraint, BMW designers ran amok and started doing weird stuff in their studios.
@@fantasy11222 yeah thats an 07 car with way less technology than modern cars. Have you owned a bmw from 2016+? They are terrible to buy. Just lease them
In the recent time, I’ve purchased a brand new fully loaded BMW (G30) 540i xDrive M Sport. Since taking delivery, I only drove few times (around 450 miles thus far) as I only use the vehicle for pleasure purpose, and attended numerous “car n’ coffee” meets and enthusiasts’ events/shows. I don’t think I will encounter many issues since I rely on my Toyota Camry as daily driver...which has over 375+K miles on the clock!
Alex Ferdinand You said ‘07. That’s a fairly old car. There’s less tech and less parts to break. My fathers 2017 4 Series has been giving him a lot of problems, he says maintenance is high and parts are bloody expensive. I don’t exactly know what is wrong but yeah. They aren’t very good cars.
