Why BMW's Investment In Electric Bus Company Proterra Is Big News For The Future of How We Travel

BMW isn't known for its interest in commercial vehicle, let along vehicles that are used for public transportation. But earlier this week BMW's i-Ventures investment arm -- along with some other influential companies -- provided a total of $55 million in investment to electric bus manufacturer Proterra.
If BMW isn't interested in commercial vehicles, and its own electric vehicle program is continuing to grow without any external input, what's the real reason behind this latest investment, and what does it mean for the way we travel in the future? The answer (we think) lies in BMW's devotion to multi-modal transportation.

I love the idea of electric busses everywhere! Every time I see a bus in a city I cannot stand all the black fumes and smell (and noise). About time they are replaced by electricity! 👍😊

Netherland is quickly replacing all busses by electrical, several cities already are electric busses only, the last ICE busses will be replaced in 2020 making all busses electrical in whole Netherland =)

The fact that BMW is pushing towards fully integrated Transportation systems, shows that their leadership is on the ball. I expect his is not the last one of these types of investments for BMW.

Proterra buses are made right here in the upstate of South Carolina... right down the road from BMWs largest factory in Spartanburg, SC. I'm sure location and shared supplier development (30% of parts for the factory come from the area) also were factors in the investment decision.

Hi Nikki I think what BMW is doing is taking a step in the right direction. the big oil companies see this as a threat and they should because oil been around for god-knows-how-long. we need to find another form of fuel to power how vehicles

Now just imagine a fleet of driverless all electric, accessable and importantly 'quiet' busses that run 24 hours a day. Now just add a smartphone app to allow remote hailing or a simple smart card reader at designated bus stops and I think we've got the makings of a really decent public transport system. These could link to heavy rail and other transport infrastructure and be quickly re-deployed to special routes during times of heavy demand. Thanks for the videos Nikki. :-)

@whykhr
@whykhr 7 лет назад
They don't need either, rails are slightly more efficient than road travel, insignificant in a city. The advent of battery electric vehicles makes trolley buses and streetcars obsolete.

So finally BMW is thinking of entering the bus industry...something which Mercedes-Benz already have established 100 years of proven reputable experience in ! Seems strange to me because it has been long impressioned upon me that MAN is the 'vision' of BMW in the world of commercial vehicles like buses, as i can 'sense' the presence of the BMW philosophy in a MAN bus, bus-chassis or truck ? So why then BMW now wants to go into buses directly or unless afterall, this BMW AG & MAN AG are 100 % non related companies ??

Personally speaking, I'm quite critical regarding BMW's move to invest in Proterra! Why else did the team that built i3 and i8 leave this company? According to the leader of this team, BMW wasn't really ever serious about EVs. Besides, it was actually the Quandt family, a major share holder of BMW, and only they who pushed for the development of i3 and i8. Why else is BMW's CEO Harald Krüger wishing Tesla all the luck they need since they are not making any profit? I love your shows and watch each episode. But in this episode I realized that you are too west centric. The 5 biggest electric car companies (by number of sales) are 1. ByD .2 Tesla. 3 Nissan 4 BMW and 5 BAIC. You just ignored the Chinese automakers. It is esp worrisome since BYD is not only one only among the top 5 eve makers but the largest one ahead of Nissan and Tesla. if you include buses and trucks byd sells twice as many electrics as the second major ev maker in the world

A waste of money for BMW. A customer who can afford a BMW will not take a city bus here in America maybe in the EU but not here. It`s a social class difference. In America busses are thought of as inner city transport they are not use by the rich which is the customer of BMW.

Very good article. The idea of multimodal transportation is one that I have thought about while thinking about range limitations of electric vehicles. In North America there is a desire to travel long distances with ones own vehicle, or to travel to other cities with access to a vehicle. In certain geographical areas such as Halifax, NS, where I live, there isn't the charging infrastructure available to make a long distance journey practical to say, Montreal or Toronto in an electric vehicle. The trip would require multiple stops of long duration adding a great deal of time to the trip. A possible alternative could be a multimodal long distance train where you could drive your car onto a car carrying rail car (or more realistically a trained car jockey do it for you) and then you board a car on the same train for the long distance journey. The travel time would be roughly the same as driving and if there is charging infrastructure on the car carrier your electric car would arrive with you fully charged eliminating the need to rent or share a car at your destination. Ideally the train would run on hydrogen fuel cells to reduce the carbon emissions of the long distance travel. What are your thoughts? A panacea or a viable alternative in the future?

Battery electric city buses are one of the best applications for BEVs. Much more efficient than diesels in that typical stop/start city bus travel without all the smoke, pollution, smell and noise. And the high maintenance cost of the diesel buses is removed. It amazes me how many "greenies' still promote the primitive electric trolley bus/streetcar, rather than embrace the battery-electric city bus. Trolley buses and streetcars are an expensive nightmare, horrendously expensive, the rails are deadly for cyclists, the trolley lines are a major impediment to moving tall loads through a city, they are prone to maintenance breakdowns and are less efficient than battery electric buses. And the slow, tedious travel on city core roads could be alleviated by using free electric shuttle buses with park n'ride parking lots just outside the city core. And elegant, low pollution solution.
@michelangelobuonarroti916

So, the "greenies" aren't sufficiently supporting the battery-electric city bus? Have they embraced Trump's "clean coal"?

What a load of old rubbish, I want my own car, I won't travel in a bus unless it's from a terminal to a plane, it just shows BMW has so much money it doesn't know what to do with it, the answer is they should stop playing around making expensive cars and get on with making affordable electric cars for the masses, but hey they only care about the bottom line not the enviroment

I'm unsure what the issue is with buses or trains? I know in the U.S. there's a lot of negative thoughts attached to them, but in Europe, (especially mainland Europe) trains and buses are perfectly normal forms of transportation, especially for commuting. Perhaps you can explain further?

Transport Evolved yeah I'm going to get my and my wife's windsurfing kit to the beach, get our mountain bikes to the alps on a bus, I was in the motor industry for 19 years, left 14 years ago, then the manufacturers used to wheel out there green car each year, yeah and that was the same car as the previous year, my problem is they are still playing lip service now, I3 and i8, cars for the masses ? "Carbon fibre" cars. I get Tesla, they have been open with their plan. the rich pay for the development of an affordable car, BMW and VW are already rich, they could change the game, the motor industry repeats itself and never learns, Ford bought, Land Rover, Volvo Jaguar, GM bought saab Opel, that went well didn't it (not) so having lost loads of money, there next thing is green automotive company's. as I said before, they could change the game by getting on and making affordable green cars rather than buying buses, what ever you do, don't get me onto autonomous cars, how many roads are too narrow that they have passing places and no lines in the middle or the edges, my XC 90 can read the road, read the white lines, well not if there is mud on the road, heavy rain, and it especially can't when they are so faded and worn out. It's time for some real life reporting, in the teal world just go down to any village pub and ask if they want to a, car share. B,have an autonomous car. Or c, have a car just like they have at the moment, but don't ask when they last saw a bus in their village, Rant Over

The problem is that the traditional car industry is killing the planet. We need to go from 45 Gt to 7 Gt of CO2-e emissions in three decades to have even an outside chance of limiting global warming to 2 degrees C. Personally, I prefer stable coastlines, healthy oceans, stable agricultural production and biodiversity far more than the ability to drive a polluting personal vehicle.
@rwg2626
@rwg2626 7 лет назад
Amos Batto yep totally agree, my whole argument is that the big companies could change the world,rather than playing at being green with i3 and i8. Just get on with it now. They could take a stand and stop building diesels this year and stop building petrols next year and become an electric car company, i3 and i8 are niche markets so they can proclaim they are worried about the environment and doing their bit, they could spend the money they are putting into the bus company to put in charging stations like the super chargers of tesla, I feel the motor industry is just playing lip service to green motoring, when they have the wealth to do so much more,
@whykhr
@whykhr 7 лет назад
The traditional car industry is not killing the planet, but it is a significant factor, total transportation is ~15% of GHG emissions, total road transport is ~10% of emissions. Electric vehicles could reduce that 10% to 5% or less.
