Why Bob Belcher Is Better Than Every Other Cartoon Dad

Bobs Burgers has been a cultural staple since it first debuted in 2011. Turning the sitcom family dynamic on it's head, Bob's Burgers stood out above the other shows at the time. Specifically because Bob Belcher is he perfect evolution of the storied TV Dad trope. Bob Belcher is a kind hearted, patient, loving father that wants to provide for his quirky family. Unlike Homer Simpson, Peter Griffen, and even Fred Flinstone, Bob Belcher is what made Bob's Burgers such a special animated comedy.

It’s refreshing to see a family show where the parents aren’t complete bone heads. Additionally it’s nice to see a show where the kids get along and support each other.

They’re flawed, but in a human way rather than a fictional character way. Bob and Linda have weaknesses, from their families and other people in their lives, but it’s how they handle them for themselves and each other that make them people you can see as people.

Never watched this show because the character voices are so f***ing annoying. At least with other shows there are some annoying voices that are actually delivered with humor, think SpongeBob or most of them have that one annoying-sounding character. But this show, I never tuned to a more annoying show in my life, they're all like mopey and voices draw on forever, the voice actors sound like a bunch of cats alone. I really like the Belchers because they feel like a real family, you can even see some traits shared between the parent and child. Bob and Tina have the same nervious moaning, Gene is a musical enthusiasts just as his mother, and Louise got the same habit of talking to objects that Bob has.
@beanzthumbz
@beanzthumbz Год назад
Definitely. The family dynamics are really interesting. Louise is super manic and intense like Linda, but although she looks and acts like her, she respects her Dad a lot more. It's the same with Gene, he looks exactly like young Bob, but he's is a total mummy's boy and and is more like Linda personality wise. Tina has Bob's deadpan tone and temperament but couldn't be any more different from him given she is a pubescent girl. Unlike basically every other animated show, the kids actually take after their parents in appearance and personality, just like kids in real life do.

@mercidee1977

This was something that was also important on Alex Hirsch's cartoon, Gravity Falls. It revolves around the antics of fraternal twins Dipper and Mabel as they visit their Great Uncle (or Grunkle) Stan in the Oregon town of Gravity Falls. Alex pulled a lot of the vibe for the show from his own childhood growing up with his twin sister Ariel, and his first requirement for the characters is that the twins and other members of the Pines family actually like and support each other. It really does make a difference in the tone of the show when characters will stand up for each other, sometimes to the very end. Also, I love that Kirsten Schaal did the voice work for both Louise in Bob's Burgers and for Mabel in Gravity Falls. The shows have such a similar relational tone, and I'm not surprised that Kristen was providing quality voice work for both projects.

I just realized how much Bob's Burgers have in common with another one of my favorite sitcom families: The Addams family. The parents love eachother and their children, even when their children picks up a weird idea that they may not fully understand, they support it. Their neighbors think they're a little weird but they're almost always welcoming to the strangers around them. And the conflicts in story comes from the family vs the world situations, not family vs family.

I also like that the belcher parents aren't unrealistically nice, but also not assholes to their kids about things they want to do. They question it, challenge it mildly to get the plot going, then they just see what happens as things play out. Which is what feels believable. I don't expect parents to be as overly lovey dovey honeymoon like early Cosmo & Wanda, or the Addams Family but it is nice that they again, do feel like they are realistically a married couple. They also feel like equals, where the mother isn't hyper sexualizd or naggy, and the husband isn't a total, abusive moron. Seeing the Belchers as quirky but nornal people is pretty new for the decade.

I love this attitude of the show. It always had a bit of edge and dark humor to it, but it was always "optimistic" in its delivery of such dark jokes. Like how Bob admits he loves everyone, but jokingly tells Linda he loves her less than the kids. It's sweet AND a little edgy. I think the earlier seasons nailed this perfectly. Now, we're lucky if one minor emergency doesn't lose us everything. To most people, the middle point from the ultra-wealthy to the rest of us is actually quite wealthy now.

It also has a sense of realism when it comes to what the Belchers can and cannot do due to money reasons. There are a lot of B plots that are just some of them hanging around the restaurant doing things that don't cost money (ie. playing "narts", Gene and Linda's "piano bar" with Ms Merkin, Bob getting over his fear of pigeons, competing to get more tips) or picking up additional jobs to make some extra money (Bob driving a cab, Linda working at Fresh Feed, Bob being a substitute teacher, Bob cooking at the frat house, any time they do catering) usually the only times they're doing something that would require more money than they reasonably have, the Fischoeders are involved to have the situation make sense (water balloon fight, the Deepening shark, the bumper car racecar, etc) it keeps it more grounded than some of the late 90s/early 00s adult animation

But I've always really liked the episode when Bob finally confronts his own father about how he was treated growing up. And when he does, he stands his ground and says that he's not sorry for leaving or for opening up his own restaurant, he's only sorry for causing a scene in front of his customers. Sadly, it shows that Bob only ever learned what NOT to do as a parent and worked off of that. He knows from experience how hurtful it is to have a parent stifle your creativity and shut you down for expressing yourself. He allows his kids to be the weirdos we know and love, even when he doesn't understand why they do the things they do. I think it's so good at showing the beauty of the mundane doing things that frankly borderline don't have to be animated to be shown but of course doing so heightens the emotions. The fact there's more musical numbers in this show than most other shows combined and that they don't feel slapped in hacked job tacky hokie stupid garbage. Also really helps too. It carried over to the 90s movies as well. They supported their kids no matter if they did odd (normal) things which worried them. They were welcoming to everyone and genuinely happy to open their house to you as long as you didn't try to harm their family thus Lurch being as much a part of it as the others. In fact, Lurch was often the only negative person in the 60s show, but I think maybe because he had more real world experience than Gomez and Fester so could see how things they were into might be perceived in the normie world. So true. Not blaming creators of Addams family new series or movies, but that loving bond you felt from the Addams, especially the parents supporting each other, the family love and even the butler considered as part of the family isn't really much there. If I remember Gomez and Moritcia didn't despise their new baby for having blonde hair and accepted him, yet in the 2019 movie of the Addams, Morticia especially has the same reaction as the antogonist when Wednesday changes her outfit to something more lively, which just feels off. Sure 2019 animated movie Gomez was still the same Gomez from 1960 and 1980 but not really the family as a whole. Anyways, you're right. I agree with you. I'm not hating anyone, though.

My favorite thing is in the first season, you can tell it was supposed to be a more raunchy show with questioning if characters actually like one another and then it getting formed into a chaotic but loving family we all know and love!!!

One thing you did not touch on, that I think is also interesting about Bob. He's a normal person. Like he has his quirks and gets excited over niche stuff. He talks to his food, and pretends the food talks to him. Sometimes you would be embarrassed to be his child, because of something he does. This is quite a normal family dynamic and I love that they included it.

Bob feels like he actually wants to be there. I think he (and *maybe* George Jetson) is the only cartoon dad who doesn't resent his family for existing or act like being a father and husband happened to him, as opposed to being things he actually worked toward. It's honestly really refreshing, because growing up with a generation of boomer dads, the resentful dad trope seemed like a cute little excuse for a lot of crap dads to act like their sub-par performance as a father and husband was a normal symptom of something beyond their control.

I’ve never been a huge fan of adult animation, because it always feels like it’s talking down to the viewers & expects them to be idiots or not get the joke. Futurama was my exception growing up. I quickly fell in love with Bob’s Burgers when I decided to give it a chance because it treats itself & the audience with respect 💙
@SmallvilleStudio
@SmallvilleStudio 2 года назад
I'd always hated most adult animation, mainly because they always had the most condescending and immature jokes and treated their cast of characters like filthy punching bags. And for whatever reason most adult animation has this really ugly look to it, *cough cough* big mouth. Bob's burgers love their characters and respects their audience and it feels so refreshing to see. Like he said, there hasn't been a change in the sitcom dynamic since the 50's. So Bob and Hank are really amazing, which is why they stand out so well. Deservedly so.

1) Futurama is, for one thing, basically the voice acting hall of fame; and if anything that show not only didn’t talk down to the viewer, it basically dared us to study math harder so we could get more of the jokes!! And 2) your comment makes it sound like you didn’t get into King Of The Hill. Please, if that’s the case, give it a shot sometime, it’s one of the best things (animated or live action) that’s ever been on television

It's worth noting that Homer is a reaction to the perfect fathers of the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s sitcoms. The reason there's so much room between the example of the Flinstones and The Simpsons is because for a very long time fathers were portrayed largely as wise, patient, dispensers of life lessons and knowledge. With Homer, though he is definitely modeled around Fred Flintstone, the creators were trying to break that long running trend. Then every show started copying The Simpsons formula. That's why young people don't understand the child abuse, it's just taking it to an extreme point to contrast him with the Danny Tanners, and the Carl Winslows of the time.

@@AcidWords1 And then Homer eventually became Peter Griffin. A big reason why people love the prime Simpsons is because there's still heart. @AcidWords1
@AcidWords1 Год назад
@@Arkiasis I believe that Homer became an exaggerated version of Homer long before Family Guy aired though. Peter was an exaggerated version of Homer, but I don't believe that The Simpsons felt the need to rip off a character from a show that was initially cancelled after 4 seasons.

Also he is very calm, often the voice of reason, and cautious, but yet, can be very funny with a bit of chaos. He is willing to support his family the best he can and give his kids a great childhood. Another healthy cartoon dad worth mentioning is Bandit from Bluey. He and his wife, Chille, always display how much they love their kids while teaching them life lessons and even taking time to deal with their own struggles as parents. One episode even centered around Chille dealing with a past miscarriage. Bandit does portray some of the lazy dad trope but not to a cartoonish degree like Homer or Peter but instead to a realistic one while still visibly showing how much he loves his kids.

If Bob reminds you of your dad, you should consider yourself lucky. I had a very toxic family. There was a very dark and lonesome period of my life when I owned the first season of Bob's Burgers and I would watch it over and over. And I realized looking back, the reason I loved the show so much is because of how wholesome it was, how the family had unconditional love for each other, and the funny writing also helped.
