I'm still not sure as to why critics really didn't like this game while normal players absolutely loved it. I'm guessing the reason is that regular players took the time to enjoy it
@thedoge492
@thedoge492 Год назад
critics dont usually spend a lot of time in a single game. For other games where every objective is clearly stated and every puzzle has hints shoved right in front of your face, this is no big deal but for rain world its another story, the critic would simply get frustrated that they dont know what should they do, drop the game after 15 min of playtime and move on to review another game
@RenArvos
@RenArvos Год назад
@@thedoge492 I mean, it is logical. Critics write reviews for a living, so more reviews means more money, and to make more reviews you need to cut some corners and save time, like not compliting games fully.

tbf, i think a lot of normal players have also bounced right off of it. you just don't hear much about it on forums, videos, and servers, bc most of the people in those spaces are people who enjoy or are otherwise interested in rain world. if memory serves, i was pretty interested in the whole game before i first played it a few years ago, but i dropped it pretty early on because, while i still liked what it was going for, it felt like it was something i couldn't experience - it was just too hard for me. ofc, i did end up finally falling in love with it after downpour dropped and the game's difficulty became a lot more adjustable, but i think i'd also become better at playing games in general since i first played it, so. y'know.

@@Lunanan tbh there's not much different to monk than survivor, so i wouldn't really bother playing survivor after, monk just is slower and has less spear damage to survivor. Then there's that hunter guy wich is probably one of the strongest slugcat even with the dlc ones, more spear dmg and slightly faster to survivor + the legendary backspear, but a 20 cycle time limit plus harder enemies, with a few unique ones for hunter.

The rain world lore is very in depth but they very much hide it away from you. I'm pretty sure most people familiar with the lore have just looked up all the pearl dialogue, either that or they've actually played hundreds of hours to legitimately collect a good number of pearls

One thing I love is how you as a player adapt the more you play. Every session you play makes you a better player for the next session, weather you realize or not. Over time you learn the creatures, the maps, the routes, the items, the mechanics, and movement, adding to your skill and making you feel like you're really surviving and learning in this environment in an immersive way. And the new DLC just takes it ten steps further, with new mechanics and features that test even the most knowledgeable and skilled players. Even as an avid Rain World player, I still feel like my skill at the game is constantly increasing.

Thank you for making this video! Always cool to see more people getting into Rain World. A few things you said that I wanted to elaborate on: 1. About the karma gates and the intention of their existence despite it seeming to contrast with the idea of exploration, it’s my belief that the game really wants you to be in a low risk and fearful mindset at first. Practically every single thing is new and unknown, so exploration is not necessarily at the center for a first playthrough. The fun of the game comes from replaying it and feeling the stakes get lower the more you acquaint yourself with the world. Soon enough, you’ll be able to breeze through the world like it’s nothing, which is a super rewarding feeling. 2. Feeling underwhelmed because exploration is more open-ended and more things may be missed is totally fair, but I think it’d be worth trying to change your mindset. Every thing you miss is just a new goal you can set out to do for a fresh playthrough. Didn’t explore one region? Go through there the next time, and try to build your pathways more in between places. Didn’t get to see what that item did last time? Well, see what you can do with it in the future. Because of the grab Rain World has on you, both with its ambiguous lore and world, it’s so much more engaging of a game. Truly, if you continue investing your time into this, you will find something special.

It probably wasn't clear as it can be a little obtuse to figure out ironically if Monk is your first playthrough, but Monk is actually related to the white slugcat, Survivor! The yellow glowing slugcat you see in the dens is an impression of where Survivor had been in the past that it's spiritually tuning into, and the dreams are dreams that the Survivor had (which is why in the cutscenes the slutcat is white, and not yellow) as it went through the world. The survivor experienced a deep lonliness, missing its family deeply after being separated (as shown in the intro cutscene of both campaigns), but eventually learned to survive on its own, especially realizing that its family had mostly moved on without it (specifically, passed from this world via ascension, which is what jumping in that big glowy pit was about). So basically, Monk is trying to find Survivor, and follows its journey to become reunited with it. It's a bit of a strange progression since, emotionally, it hits a lot harder if you start as Survivor rather than Monk, but that's basically what's going on for the emotional plot beats of Monk specifically

Even if you work out what you need to do to get it. good luck trying lol. god awfully tedius and time consuming to just get one, let alone all of them, even knowing where they all are. It's also painful that the other way to get lore requires you to talk to all of the eccos... after you've gone and gotten max karma from five pebbles... so you can't even do that and the achievement for ascending without talking to 5P on the same play through.
@peppermintgal4302
@peppermintgal4302 Год назад
I myself am in the triple digits of playtime and have played a number of the campaigns to completion, and I still have only scratched the surface. The only reason I know so much lore is youtube videos. You gotta meet all the Echos, play all the campaigns, get all the pearls to Moon, and as Spearmaster, receive all the transmissions (meaning finding all the little satellite plants,) and that's as far as I know, in order to get all the lore that's in the game. (And now that I think about it, there's differences in dialogue depending on how you do certain things --- I understand that if you ascend one iterator and not the other as Saint, you get different dialogue when you see them past the Rubicon then if you ascend the other instead or if you ascend both. If you visit 5P as Spearmaster before visiting Moon, he won't talk to you, just throw some kind of fit and throw you out, you get some small but interesting dialogue differences if you get the mass rarefaction cell before meeting 5P as Rivulet, stuff like that.) Plus there's a lot of interesting nuances to the game, some maybe even horrifying. Like, if you commit the cardinal sin OP was talking about, you can get the Overseer back by bringing Moon neuronflies from 5P's compound, if you're playing Spearmaster, he'll kill you if you pop your head back into his room, (guess how I know that one?) stuff like that.

My friend kept telling me to play this game but he explained it poorly and I thought it was some world box knockoff. When I finally played it, I was immediately addicted. I played over steam remote play with my 8 mbps download speed but the game was so good I didn’t care about the lag. Once we got to five pebbles I decided to buy the game for myself and I went crazy. I explored every alternate path we missed and beat the game on accident. I tried my best to go completely spoiler free. This video popped up in my recommendations and was my main motivator to beat the game and I finally got to watch it. I can’t recommend rain world enough. Before rain world my favorite games were trailmakers and StarCraft II. And just slugcat. It’s a slugcat. What is there not to like about a cat slug hybrid. 10/10 and I am not exaggerating, I can’t think of a single thing that I don’t like about this game.

My first experience with the game was so incredibly frustrating, I had absolutely no idea what was going on, I was dying to stupidest things ever all the time. I really love lore and storytelling in games so I was really pissed to miss all of it. I was just trying to get from one shelter to another, exploring wasnt even an option. So I really got sick of not knowing what was going on and just googled all the lore and what to do and where to go and kinda spoiled the whole game... all I wanted was to just go back to my scugs family, and I found out I won't even get that! And yet, I absolutely loved it, through pain and frustration and, I must admit, a lot of rage, I really really loved it, and now with the googled lore, I gained a new appreciation for this games' world. Now Im playing through all of the downpour's campaigns and its honestly, the most fun I've really had in a while

Keep making these at least once a month and i'll definitely be subbing This video feels like quality, pleasing to hear too, is interesting and the objectively neutral point of view makes this one of those videos you can show a friend that shares interest for similar games or the same game even i felt as if you could have shown less important content and more gameplay with muted text while we hear your take on certain aspects of the game but thats just me Very good video over all and the outro sounds cool, you should definitely make it fade for a little bit longer, maybe 2 or 5 seconds with a less sudden cut and a more distiguishable fade to silence (just my personal preference but its fine as it is) its like one of those pensive themes you know? Like you can digest the content in the outro I always try to help creators improve with the things they nail and this one kept me interested the whole video, anyways have you tried Carrion? similar art style and definitely inspired by "The thing" I've seen channels rise and fall and i would love to see you rise so my advice would be to stay away from controversy, politics and keep charities neutral but hey its your channel and personally as long as the content is enterteining and you show transparency and honesty (like in this video telling us you have almost no idea of what you are talking about for example) then i'll watch and i will separate the art frome the artist

@@Lunanan I get that's the appeal of Monk, but for some reason I started slipping up and making many costly mistakes. It's hard to describe it but I didn't vibe with Monk, I kept dying to green lizards (usually greens are no problem as I tend to avoid them, since they are very tanky) and getting frustrated at Monk's weak arms. In retrospect it could be my fault for playing Hunter before hand, giving me the taste of a strong slugcat, but also one thing had influenced me the most, luckily you skipped that area (unfortunate development, especially during Monk's timeline, that place is hell, that one enemy blocking the way forward was the worst). As for the story aspect Monk uses Survivors story and cutscenes, only the beginning and end are slightly different, everything else is the same, whilst the rest of the Slugcats have their own stories and mechanics. I'm glad you've had a enjoyable Monk experience, I wasn't as lucky (might give Monk another go, might be easier with downpour on). Also I subbed and became the 69th Sub (nice), just to refresh your channel to see that you are way past that lmao, congrats on the current 73 sub milestone! I played monk all the way through first and now I'm trying out survivor. Monks campaign is difficult for a new comer but I can see why its the easy mode. Enemy spawn are tuned down for monk, so the experience is more chill. The main challenges with monk is his throw damage is pretty weak, the most noticeable change is that pole vines take two spears for monk but only one for survivor. In addition, newbies will not know about the shortcut to FPs room, so I did the rookie mistake and went through the zero G areas. Unfortunate development, was hellish on monk and it really did test my patience. The only other place that got to the same level was drainage system, that area with the mole lizards. Luckily that wasn't too bad since I stumbled upon the exit pretty quick. I also didn't know how to ascend, but after a while of just swimming to a direction I realized you were meant to swim into the light, and that did piss me off a little. The game really explains the bare minimum, and while there is beauty to learning things on your own, I do not know why they make you swim for that ending sequence, I got tired with how long it takes, just make that ending cutscene experience shorter, I didn't need to see the worm things swimming for an eternity.

The rules of the world and the mechanics of the game aren't apparent when the player first begins their journey, but it's a deliberate design choice. You are, for all extensive purposes, an animal that was thrust into an unknown world and forced to survive. In Rain world, the more you learn about your world through observation and trial and error and the more adept you become at circumnavigating threats, the more you prove your mastery and the better off you are at surviving. Exploration of uncharted territories is a challenge in itself, because it forces you into a setting or a part of the world for which you have no knowledge. Even the location of platforms is critical information in a situation where every jump can be the difference between life and death. Once you surmount the wall that this game presents (pun intended), only then do your aspirations manifest. Only then does it become apparent what your higher goal is. This process of learning ties in with the concept of ascending or transcendence really well... but beginning players hardly care about that just yet. My best advice to newer players is to recognize that your slugcat is an animal who's in danger, if you haven't already, and that your goal is to help him survive, and to increase his karma level. Not explore. Not unlock power ups or attacks like its some kind of metroid-vania. But to simply survive until you feel comfortable exploring just a bit more and taking a few more risks than you're used to. Knowledge is important in this game, and you know only what your slugcat can see on screen. Because of this: the game is extraordinarily wonderful at visual and environmental storytelling, and is one of the reasons it is as popular as it is in recent months. Furthermore: Passage can only be used once. If you know you know. If you don't, you will. (This is probably the only thing I wish I knew before using it) And whatever you do. DON'T look up spoilers if unless you're TRULY stuck and unless you TRULY need navigation advice. I restarted the game 2 separate times before I felt adept enough with the movement controls to actually make moderate strides in exploration, and even still that run was about 10+ hours and 120+ cycles in length because I chose not to look up a map for my first play through. I did look up *some things when achievement hunting however, and even still I wouldn't advise it, because those too can be achieved via trial and error and exploration and experimentation. This is the kind of game that deserves a blind play through at least once. ~Good luck fellow slugcats.

i will have to say that the lore is really obscure and hard to find in the non dounpour campaign's but especially in ones like spearmaster a lot of info is given along the path you will take

Karma gates don't need karma (for most) as monk. Yes, it is ez-baybee mode

Some quick notes about some of the details, such as the difficulty, controls and everything else. None of this is meant to show the errors Lunan made during this, but just slight things I noticed during the video that felt like it didn’t do the game justice. Includes similar spoilers found in the video For the karma gates, Monk is the ONLY Slugcat to have karma gates permanently open once used, but this may be able to be changed with the DLC (yes, there’s a dlc, it adds tons of more content, almost bigger than the game itself in terms of map areas and changes). Food is required to get through a cycle, with extras being carried over to the next cycle. I won’t state what happens when you hibernate with less than required food. Each cycle is different, even the same cycle, so don’t expect everything to be exactly the same as when you last visited that area. There will still be semblance of what was once there, however their positions, places and maybe even a creature or 2, may be completely different. The (Rain) world is procedurally animated in every way, and many rooms are still loaded in while you’re in a completely different room, meaning you are never truly safe. The reason the controls are so vaguely mentioned is because it’s attempting to only give you what’s needed, and letting you understand the rest, as you’re in an unfamiliar place, with even the backstory as to how you got here even directly showing you that. Also, the movement guide is smth like 99 pages long, with more being developed. YOU CAN L CANCEL. You are not the main character, there are no defined ‘main characters’ in the game, and you are effectively just another animal to the ecosystem, with you also being prey to most animals. Don’t expect to have health, this isn’t a souls-like, it’s just hard because it’s an ecosystem, so don’t expect evolution of any kind. The story is vague because it’s not the main focus, surviving is, so it’s for players to interpret how they think the story is and then base conclusions off of that. The music is brilliant, you should listen to it, even the threat music is extremely well made. Survivor, the alternate starter campaign to Monk, is stronger than Monk, but also deals with threats more commonly than Monk. My first playthrough was Survivor, and probably showed me how nothing in Rain world really cares for you, more than my partial delve into Monk’s campaign. I know this video may have already been updated, as Lunan has done a Hunter playthrough, as well as them being a first-time player as of this video, but it’s small details I just wanted to add (because I’ve played through 6 unique campaigns to completion, with Monk and Hunter (funnily enough) being the only incomplete ones as of writing this). Great video Lunan!

I first discovered Rainworld when a friend was streaming they're Hunter run in a discord server i was in. I decided to take a look and I got interested. A few days later i Bought the base game and after a few days I loved it. I ended up Buying downpour after i beat hunter and I wishlisted the Upcoming Watcher DLC. And To this day Im still having fun and I doubt I'll run out of content with the Steam workshop having community made Regions, Slugcats and other Somewhat silly and Goofy shenanigans. I do not regret my purchases.

My own personal experience with Rain World when I first picked it up was.. Pure confusion and honestly kinda aimlessness. The game is very, very, very difficult and hard to navigate starting off, especially pre-Downpour and pre-Hunter/Monk update, when we had JUST Survivor to play. It took me _AGES_ to figure out that the Overseers were trying to guide me somewhere, and even then I had no idea what to do with that information. Unfortunately I only realized there was an actual ending to the campaign when I learned about it online by accident. And that is one big flaw starting off as a new player. You're thrown headfirst into a world where it is _not_ going to sugarcoat anything or hold your hand for very long. You're taught the basics, and then dumped on your butt to figure out the rest. But... why do I love it so much then, if my first few hours/days/sessions playing it were so weird and kinda negative? Why did I keep playing the game I debated refunding right from the start? Because it.. has a way of just reeling you in. Something about being a (mostly) helpless but agile little critter who is at the bottom of the food chain kinda appeals to that feral instinct in me that longs so hopelessly for more games like Rain World where we play as an animal, just trying to survive and make it through its day to day life. The lore and the exploration is kind of a bonus on top of that for me, but the main draw is just.. living in this Rain World, watching the ecosystem roll in all its gruesome and vicious glory, and being a small part of that as I go.

I mean sure, but for 1st time experience it's best experience 5P from entrance instead of exit. And sometimes it's worth going the old intended paths since it may differ on other slugcats. Especially on Rivulet campaign. I use wall path only when I'm sure there is nothing new on other side. I don't like skipping 90% of the region just to get to point A to point B. For future re-runs and expedition? Sure I will use wall route

The toll you pay for easy mode is that Monk experiences even less of the story then there already is. Pebbles pretty much just kicks you out, where as normally he goes quite in depth about what it all means. Monk also doesn't get any colored pearls, which you can bring to Looks tot he Moon to read them as Survivor. They contain additional story.

If you enjoyed monk, then you'l definitely have fun with the other slugcats! This game is, in my opinion, amazing. It's simply unbelievably beautiful, harsh and horrifying at once. Piecing together the story, figuring out the movement, fighting for your life... And as someone who's finished rivulet just yesterday, I'd reccomend you to get the DLC if you have money and patience for it.

As someone who loves fighting, I would say there is no "easy mode" in this game, if Monk really was "easy" the game would make your spear damage 2x instead of .5x so really it equates to the higher your spear damage the higher your hunger bar. Monk does have better predator spawns though. I'd say interpretation can vary from player to player

Monk not only has easier difficulty due to spawns, but he has a higher reputation modifier, meaning that you can befriend lizard population and scavs twice as fast as any survivor. Yes, there is global reputation to lizards, where if you feed and save lizors enough in a region, they will not hunt you. Doing it in multiple regions will spread effect to all the other regions, potentially turning game into pacifist run. Besides vultures. And spiders. And leeches. And deers. Screw deers. I declare war against deers.
