Why Britain is not cold like Canada 

Hello everyone. Thanks for watching this video! It is heartbreaking to say that I can’t make as much videos now then I could during lockdown. School started, and I have become very very busy. My most recent videos are actually school project as well. I might only be posting once a month now :/ I will try my best however to make quality content whenever I have time. The Hudson Bay in Canada is a really big factor in North America’s weather and it is often overlooked

The UK is a Maritime climate it feels colder than the temperature on the forecast. I am from Scotland, if it says it is 10 degrees outside, you think "that's not that bad" but you step outside and you have wind in all directions (because it is a small island) and your clothes never fully dry after they get wet. Put it this way Maritime climate feel alot colder than the temperature forecast and that is probably why people mistake the British isles for a cold region when in fact it is actually a mild region temperature wise. If you can imagine this, think about a cold day in your country and then visit the beach, think about how the beach feels compared to the mainland. The UK and Rep.Ireland are Islands people seem to forget that.

The Irish Sea is much warmer than the North Sea. I swam in both as a child on holidays. The gulf stream is real!

The evaporation of the gulf stream is the sole reason why it rains so much in countries like Norway and England. It still continues to northern Europe just in the air. Its a very strong evidence for the gulf stream between northern Norway and Svalbard where there is suppose to be ice but the stream prevent it from forming. Its also why there are never Polar bears in Norway because they simply cant travel on the ice sheets like they do between Iceland/greenland Svalbard/north pole etc

Cool video! To frame it better you should compare Central Europe to most of Canada, and UK to Vancouver island, far more similarities, some places on the island don’t ever get snow

The ocean does not heat and cool as fast as the land so places near the ocean have warmer winters and cooler summers. This effect is strongest on west coasts. This effect does work in the Pacific Northwest but the effect does not go as far inland because the mountains stop ocean air. Mongolia and Canada are just as warm of warmer than Britain is the summer but are way colder in the winter.

One thing that makes UK winters seem colder then what they are is because of how humid and damp you get making you feel much colder then what the actual temp is

This video was very informative and entertaining. I think the mid-latitude prevailing winds might help to heat Europe just because the lower latitude winds from North Africa were able to bring us dust from Saharan wind storms this year in North America. (Just my theory from a non-scientist.)

Didn’t ya’ll learn that areas by the sea have coast Climate? Areas by the sea has mild winters and cold summers, because in the Winter the sea is still Wars from the summer and vise versa. If you’re located far away from a sea your summer and Winter Will be very diverse. Then you’ll have Warm summers and cold winters. I live by the sea and in the winter we get like -20°c on a cold day, maybe -25°. If you go away from de sea like 200 km it Will normaly be -25°c or higher! Edit: By this I meant being close to a large body of water Will give milder winters, but it’s not the only factor. Other stuff like ocean currents, wind currents and topographic height is also factors which can change the climate of a certain place

Interesting and cogent presentation. I hope your audience understands that science doesn’t come up with “facts” but is based on evidence. The problem is that the scientific process usually likes to control for confounding variables but real life gets in the way. So it’s hypotheses can’t be confirmed because of numerous variables which leads to correlational data and we’re guessing at that point. My folks emigrated from Scotland to the US. I remember an early trip to visit my family. We left Philadelphia and it was 90F and when we landed in London it was in the upper 50’s and when we got to Edinburgh it was 40 with snow flurries. I was 8 years old and wearing a tee shirt. That was my early lesson on the latitude variable in your equation. Keep up the good work, I’m looking forward to seeing your other videos. Cheers the now

Weather and climate has been what has always defined history at the end of the day. From important battles and wars to successful civilizations and even their downfalls. It's all linked back to the climate.

The gulf stream and the jet stream coming for the SW to the Uk makes this huge difference. I live in the SW of England and the climate is very mild all year round, rarely does it get too hot or too cold. The west and south of the Uk is warmer than the NE of the UK, with temperatures been 10°C to 20°C cooler in the NE, the distance between is only 300 to 350 miles and the temperature difference is extremely noticeable.

Perhaps the natural warmth of Britons, in comparison with cold Canadians, makes a significant contribution to the thermal differential between Great Britain and Canada.

Here in America altitude makes a big difference. Eastern Idaho is way colder than central Idaho, though it is lower. It's because Eastern Idaho is 4000 feet above sea level whereas central Idaho is only around 1000 feet above sea level.

I went swimming in the ocean in Ålesund, Norway. Which is the same latitude as Kuujjuaq, Québec, Canada. I wouldn't dare step into the water that far north in Québec. Even in Sept-Iles it's very cold.

Being from central Canada it tends to get really cold here it’s really dry so and the wide open prairies so the wind chill is bitter

I will still challenge this new theory. Even though the gulfstream (AMOC) system does not cause direct heating of Britain and Europe - it does affect the wind pattern to a large extent. And no, Alaska is not noticeably warmer than Russia on the same latitude, its still freezing with lots of snowfall. It's true the UK is warm in the winter because the wind blowing from the West-South-West direction. Sure, that will bring moisture and warm air from the central North Atlantic. The sea surface temperatures around Britain are about ~10*C in winter so there is no sea ice. However, the most important part of it is further North. The Norwegian and Barents seas - are also Ice free all year round, even during colder years. That is the big answer, not the Rockies thousands of miles away. This huge ice free area of the ocean does not chill the air above it the same way ice does, and that allows warm plumes of air from the south to make it far North without being interrupted. This process is strengthened because a low pressure system forms over Iceland and that speeds it up and makes it warmer. Now the conclusion. If the Gulfstream system shut down, or wasn't there at all, then the entire sea off Norway would freeze over down to say the latitude of the arctic circle. Sea ice would surround Iceland on all sides. That will do two things: 1. Scandinavia being downwind gets really cold. (a bit like Alaska) 2. The wind wind speed blowing over the Atlantic towards Britain will also ramp up, and blow from a more North-West direction. And there you have it. By eliminating the Gulfstream you get an altered wind pattern. It's the presence of sea ice that makes the difference* It's a powerful temperature lever.

The south of Greenland is further south than Iceland by a lot and still is a lot more remote and cold

The jet stream is the main driver, look into it. When it drops you feel the artic winds bigtime, when its high it draws warm air up from Africa.

It's more complicated than just one thing. You also have to account Canada doesn't get any benefits of the Gulfstream. Instead, it get a lot of cold from the Artic.

You can't compare countries that are on the coast or near the coast of the ocean and compare it parts of the country that are in the middle of a continent. There are coastal climates and there are continental climate, both are completely different.

Toronto is a bit more to the south in comparison with Florence, Italy. But weather is way colder in Toronto. Italy has Africa on the south, and mountains covering north Pole. Nothing is covering Toronto from the northern jet stream. Same jer steam is used by planes to fly to Europe.

living in northern Germany, it was crazy to find out back then, that we are at the same "height" as the COLD regions of Canada!

The true reason of U.K. I’m not sure but in Portugal and Spain its proved that the Iberian peninsula is an extension of the Sahara desert in the south. Southern Iberia use to be desert but during the colonial times Portugal and Spain turned it into very fertile regions.

The British Isles are in practice an island in the North Atlantic. The prevailing winds are from the west. The winds will on average have the the temperature of the ocean to the west of Britain. Hence that will be the temperature of Britain in the winter time, same goes for Norway, France etc. Not so for Canada and Siberia etc. The winds from the ocean doesn't reach into those large continental landmasses. They will get a temperature dictated by the temperature of the air masses residing there in winter time, which often is very low indeed as the sunshine is almost absent, and often influenced by air coming down from the polar areas. The role of the Gulf Stream is highly exaggerated and is an anachronistic misunderstanding.

From Canada....The Jet stream plays a huge part of it. America sometimes has it much worse in terms of winter storms because of the Jet stream. You would think it'd be the other way round, considering we're much more northern ('Northern Lights; Tears Are Not Enough'). Du Canada... Le Jet Stream y joue un rôle important. West coast doesn't have these huge differences tho, latitude and climate there are really similar to Europe's. California like Mediterranean coasts, Oregon like France,Washington like Germany ,BC like UK and Southern Alaska like Scandinavia. California's winters are even milder than Spain.

In Sweden we can be compared to siberia like canada is compared to britain, and many people think that we have warmer climete than siberia, but its not really true. Yes, we have not as extreme winters as russia, but we also don't have as extreme summers either. In winter we can quite quickly get -20 to -30 degrees, which isn't too far off the -40 to -50 they have in siberia, and in summer, we have an average of only 15-25 degrees and only 30+ in extreme conditions while in siberia you could quickly get 30-40 degrees on average, so if anything, it seems like sweden is somewhat colder than siberia. As I usually say as a joke to other foreigners: Sweden is a foretaste of siberia, while Norway, especially the north cape, is a foretaste of the archtic.

I'm pretty sure it's the Labrador current that causes the maritimes and the north eastern U.S to be so darn cold in winter.

Compared to Australia England is cold. Large areas of land warm during the day and the air above is warmed. Seas cool air. Altitude also affects temperature. Even in warm countries, there can be snow on mountains.

I believe that Canada is more to Continental climate influenced to high air pressure meanwile UK so near to ocean current bring more heat to europe as a result make weather in Europe milder. Only my thought.😅

As a Canadian who lives in southern Alberta I will say winters can be cold but summer is hotter then England due to where I live having a continental climate

Historically Western Europe has benefited from shallow seas, low mountain ranges and before the thaw of the last Ice Age, also land bridges, making it easier for various groups, to move around and successfully colonise Europe. Himalaya also have same latitude as of Arabian desert, Sahara desert and US Mexico border . But they are very 🥶 cold.

North eastern Canada is one of the toughest places in the northern hemisphere to live it’s as far north as Denmark but due to the Hudson Bay it rarely gets very warm the summers are cloudy and cool and the winters are frigid nearly on par with Siberia but at least Siberia gets nice and hot in summer they even have lizards and snakes in Siberia north east Canada doesn’t cause it’s too cold for them.

That's maybe why Arabia is warmer than China when they are on the same attitude. Because of Arabia surrounded by water, while China is between Chinese sea and Tibet, making Arabia more hot, while China getting Tibet cold weather and rivers.

Yet we live in Victoria BC way further north than Ontario yet next to no snow ever. 🤷🤷

Well, I wouldn't call the UK warm. It's definitely warmer statistically than Canada but it is not a warm country. Also, the British isles is a maritime climate meaning it always feels colder than the actual temperature that you see on TV. So if it says the UK is 5 degrees outside then it would feel -5 degrees outside. One phrase you here all the time in the UK "it is only (insert what ever degree) degrees why does it feel so cold".

What did I just watch? Some kid spreading random crap he read online? "The Gulf Stream is not responsible for the increased warmth of Europe, it's actually due to the warming of the ocean!" Said another way he said "It's not oceanic heating, it's oceanic heating!" It is entirely possible I'm wrong here. Maybe the kid is right. However you have to actually make a reasonable argument for something before saying "therefore everything you've been taught is wrong" Also, where do you think all the heat from the Gulf Stream went to cause it to drop in temperature and increase in density to cause it to flow down into the deep ocean? It dumps the heat into the surrounding waters through conductive heating while the evaporation mentioned causes it to dump heat into the atmosphere through convective heating. This means that all that heating you are talking about can be attributed to the heat from the Gulf Stream. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it only moves and changes forms. If you loose energy in one place it should be understood that it should be looked for in either another place for in another form Again, maybe I'm wrong about the extent to which the Gulf Stream contributes to heating, but if you want to change anyone's mind about something there should be a good argument and preferably multiple peer reviewed papers cited from various sources to show that the idea is taken seriously by the people who spend their lives studying this kind of thing

There’s different kinds of cold. Even within Canada there’s different types of cold.

Anyone that thinks that Canada is cold has never been on Lake Huron in July. Or Toronto in December. We fried in July and I went out without a coat in December.

The title should be ' why the UK is not as cold as the East end centre of Canada' The Pacific coast of Canada is another matter.
