Good job as always .. but you installed the legs wrongly .. it has a lip that holds the cabinet sude panels . In your case the presure and load will be on bottom panel and screws .. but will survive if fixed to the wall .. also the plinth will carry some of that load

Cheers mate! Nice work! 👍 You removed a piece of the front of the hanging cabinet. You could have placed that at the back after removing the top part of it, so it would close the gap between the cabinet and the wall.

They look great. The break down of prices is also good to see, especially the time aspect. This is one thing i never factor as amateur/hobby person, as it is spare time - but not that spare, usually a bloody weekend and then back to work 😂😂 Thanks for a cracking video 👍👍

I'm renovating out kitchen and we ordered carcases from a well known 2 letter store, cheap enough and chunky 22mm too. Took the old units down which were 15mm units to re-use the wood from that. Making my some custom units around fridge freezer and on top of existing old wall units using furniture board. Then we shall get all doors replaced by a company in Wigan. I'm on a budget here!! Tomorrows job - sliding door on kitchen with a pocket to allow it to sit behind where new wall unit is to be hung. Oh the fun!

And to see you at almost a quarter million subs and a baby on the way is just so amazing. Great job Keith!!! I build mine 99% of the time but I use the laminated chipboard from Wickes (saves on painting and it is wipe clean). Then if they are framed units then I will make solid doors and frames from tulip (if painted). If they are standard lay on doors then I will use moisture resistant MDF. I know I do this as a job and I have a lot of tools/equipment but I really would encourage anybody to have a go at building their own kitchen. It can be a great learning experience.

@@PaulsDIYShed Things have changed my end as I have a full on Kitchen company now, making a minimum of 4 kitchens per month. I don't use Wickes boards anymore as I get EGGER boards in the colour that I need and get them cut to size and edgebanded. I would actually recommend that as the way to go now.

Nice one Keith 👍 years ago your work was very rough around the edges and now you're designing building your own bloody kitchen! You've come so far you should be very proud of yourself. I've been a Carpenter/ Joiner for over 20 years and you've done many things I haven't and your videos have even taught me a thing or two over the years. Now I've started doing a bit of youtube myself I can really appreciate how good your videos are. Always the right length and pace and never boring. Also the podcast is great too. You made the right decision to make that yourself. But as you quite rightly say it depends on how you value your own time. But you have the experience and facilities to make them and thats the key. But also you have the self satisfaction that you made them as with the other stuff you make.

Looking nice already! Custom made is alway best and if you can do it yourself, why not give it a go! Seeing the kitty-litters reminds me I was going to build a cabinet where they could fit in to create some storage space above them. Thanks for reminding me and giving me good idea's and how to make them. I do really like that paint you're using, nice color.

Interesting project Keith, a small-ish area like this is of course far less daunting than a whole kitchen build, but it will benefit greatly from the bespoke design. Increasingly I find higher worktops sinks and benches more comfortable and I'm not a stall as you so this makes sense regardless of pipes. Enjoyed the inevitability fanfare for highlighting your mistake, and as always it was good to hear you talk through the remediation options. Looking forward to the install !

I was shocked at the price of cabinets at B&Q when I checked the other day! In the past I've just bought them as a cheap and easy way to do built ins, but when I priced them up I was going to be spending well over £300 for a few 1000 cabinets with doors. Went into Sketchup, modelled them up and I can build them out of 3 sheets of MDF, so less than £100 including doors! Plus, I can build them to the perfect depth

As per another comment I'm surprised at the cost of B&Q units , they were my first choice as they worked out cheaper than buying furniture boards and making units up.

Funny. I went through that exact same process a few years ago. I ended up buying the units as it was roughly the same price as making them myself but obviously a lot quicker to install as I didn't need to build them from scratch and then paint them, so while the cost was more or less the same it did sae me several days of work.

Hm, I always thought that the only fixed hinge measurment is a mounting plate position. Hinge cup position varies depending on door thickness and gap size between doors.

Ive bought howdens units in the past and they are ok, they work out cheaper than DIY. The quality of bought carcasses isnt great nowadays, and even using cheap MDF you still end up with a better carcass than a bought one.

About 30 yars ago, I was between jobs (sales and IT) during recession. A friend had just bought a 19th century terace house in southeast London. The large kitchen was horrible and kitchen floor and walls all moved over 100 years and bomb damage in WW2. She asked me to build a kitchen with no chipboard and doors able to resist small children opening the too forcefully. I scratch built it using WPB plywood, softwood for struts, doors shaker style from softwood and 6mm birch faced plywood. Draws carcasses MDf. Thing is - the cabinets were not rigid. I made them flexible to mould to the walls, and floors while remaining level. Yacht varnish soaked into end grains and as finish for cabinets; Sikkens woodstain for the doors. Blum 270-degree hinges. I made corner cabinets for the floor cabinets and for the wall with the doors opening to allow easy access to whole cabinet interior. Never done anything like that before. Only power tools were a Bosch green label corded drill, Bosch green POF500 router with the little milling stand, and a Kango 6-inch circular saw with a 48-tooth crosscut blade which gave glass-smooth cuts. Was as good as new when she sold the house 30 years later. Router died a few years ago but it was probably just the brushes, shame I dumped it. I dovetailed the struts into the plywood without glue but very long large diameter screws into pilot holes almost equal to the screw diameter. That gave the flexibility with strength I wanted without bursting the plywood. Nowadays, I'd want all sorts of gear - track saw, jigs, etc. The Black & Decker Workmate (the really good version, about 1 millionth I got for my 21st birthday in 1970s) was solid enough to take chiselling and planing. Wish I still had it for when I don't want to use power tools but it took up space I don't have. Happy memories.

cordless tracksaws really are next level huh.. ive been so close to ordering the mafell corded all month now but havent pulled the trigger. Every time i see someone use a cordless outside i get so jealous. However, they seem to cost another 40% on top of an already expensive tool + chewing through batteries even faster... hmmm also, 250 a day POST tax would be rather strong wage for anyone in the uk. all money you spend is post-tax!

Looks good. I had one thought watching this.. you often mention putting screws in to reinforce a glued joint in your projects, but my understanding is that a well glued joint is stronger than the wood itself anyway. Have you ever done any of your tests to work out if screws are actually adding anything to the joints? If not, might make for an interesting video one day?

glue is not strong enough on end grain mdf even on solid wood the end grain is an issue face to face in solid wood does make a great glue joint always better to add screws when making cabinets from mdf for the reasons i mention

The 2 best MRMDF manufacturers by far are Medite and Kronospan, very similar products. Have you tried James Lathams (sheet side rather than timber side).Brooks brothers also worth a look.

I have a question for you, when I moved into my new house the handrail had chocolate brown paint on and after sanding it down and painting it with white gloss it has rubbed off over time any idea of what I did wrong or what is the best gloss paint to paint it

I’m not a tradesman, but have a little experience. If you’re going oil on oil, you’ll need to apply a bonding primer. That’s unless you’re using a linseed oil paint, then you could just go straight on. I imagine it’s latex oil that you’re using so it’s probably the lack of primer why it’s rubbed off

If you have the tools and know how. I think it would be a bit embarrassing to buy. Unless of course it is cheaper than you can make. AND. Custom space needs custom cabinets.

Great build as always Keith. The other option to consider for those that don’t have the table saw/track saw combination is to get your timber supplier to cut all the components for you. In my experience as a tradesperson, this often doesn’t work out much more expensive than buying the raw materials and gets round the unwieldy full sheet issue (Robin Clevett did a video on this recently). This basically results in a flat pack to put together, albeit one that needs painting if you use an unfinished material.

18mm mdf is no good for shelves. u need 22mm, at least I made that same mistake on my first project.
