Why Bulgarian Rose Oil Is So Expensive | So Expensive | Business Insider

Bulgarian rose oil is the most valuable rose oil on the market. Buyers are willing to pay $15,000 for a single kilogram. But to make the highest-quality Bulgarian rose oil, producers must spend the year cultivating fields that will only bloom for a few weeks. The petals are distilled the same hour they're harvested, costing producers $8,000 a kilo for labor alone.

we did that too, we smushed juniper into it too and before we knew it was juniper we called them smell-good berries, and we had a perfume business, and then it went rancid but we rolled with it and converted it to a stink factory, very lucrative, mixed it with sandbox sand to make it more nutritious, continued it into the winter with our snow business, white snow was the delicacy, but brown snow was where the big business was.

My family owns inherited land in the valley of roses, when i was little - around 10-12 , i was also involved in rose picking. Man, this was the toughest, hardest thing i ever did. You get up at 5 in the morning, because then the concentration of oils is much more, coldness, thorns all over you, not just your hands, sticky flowers, insects and so much more....in the end, after 1 week of rose picking, you pick a whole truck of roses and this equals to 20-40 ml of rose oil, I was devasted when i found out my week worth of work was equal to 1 tiny sized bottle. But now that i remember this time - 20 years in the past, i hold my tears of sorrow for my family and friends which are no longer with me, and i used to hang out with them doing this job.

Truly is a remarkable material. Along with real oud, certain jasmines, saffron and indian sandalwood, they can be some of the most expensive perfume materials on earth. Ensuring their stable, sustainable cultivation, harvest and quality control is a priority in the industry, and will likely require considerable innovation in the field in the face of ongoing climate instability, as well as equitable long-term partnerships between growers and buyers. Rather than placing an emphasis on profit, the future lies in how we interact with each other and our planet on the most fundamental levels in order to preserve such magnificent materials that ultimately cannot be replaced or easily imitated.

Coming from my fashion experience: the best way to have a high paying career in perfumery is to become a House Perfumer for a fashion house (think Chanel, Versace, Fendi, etc.) They only ever have one House Perfumer at a time (so I imagine it to be competitive). Natural oils are great, but aren't very long lasting, so mixing in synthetic fragrances is ideal. This will require you to explore a degree in Chemistry. The fashion industry also requires you, unfortunately, to have connections 😅 I wish you luck in your adventure! It's never too late to start. You may even develop the new IT fragrance 😁
@M3GAprincess
@M3GAprincess 7 месяцев назад
If you have a good nose, I'd say buy different samples of various common perfume fragrances elements, and start smelling them, then try random perfumes and try to decompose what fragrances are in it. If you can do so pretty well, you should go for it. Everyone has a nose, very very few people have good ones. It's like wine tasters, a lot of them really can't tell and would be tricked (and have been) drinking blind. They gather a lot of information visually. But there are geniuses. I see so much wasted talent. If you have this and can get technical about it, go for it.

@@pjacobsen1000 Determining the line between acceptable labor utilization and unethical exploitation is nuanced, but some key principles apply: - Consent - Exploitation often involves labor that is non-consensual, forced, or coerced in some way. Ethical labor requires workers willingly agree to the work and terms. - Fair compensation - Workers should be paid a fair wage that provides a decent livelihood and covers basic needs. Exploitation is often marked by excessively low pay that enriches employers at the detriment of workers. - Reasonable hours/conditions - Labor standards should set reasonable limits on working hours per day/week, overtime, rest periods, safety conditions, etc. Exploitation often disregards these standards. - No discrimination - There should be no discrimination in labor conditions or opportunities based on gender, race, ethnicity, etc. Exploitative labor often targets vulnerable social groups. - Freedom of association - Workers should have the right to organize, unionize, collectively bargain, protest, etc. Exploitation seeks to prevent this to maintain control. - Regulations and rights - Ethical labor should be regulated by standards and laws that are enforced to protect workers from exploitation. Lack of regulation enables exploitatory practices. - Power balances - Exploitation tends to occur where there are severe imbalances of power and wealth between those profiting from labor and the laborers themselves. - Voice for workers - Those performing labor should have a voice in setting labor conditions and rights. Exploitation mutes workers' voices and agency. So in essence, labor crosses into exploitation when it disregard core human rights, wellbeing, and dignity for the sake of profit for those at the top at the expense of those below. Context matters, but these principles can help assess what constitutes ethical utilization versus exploitation.

I think they mean that the rose naturally has a very low oil content but growing it in the specific conditions of Bulgaria means you get more oil out of the rose than if you grew it in a different climate with different conditions. They mention that in other places the flower can have a more waxy film on it which inhibits the amount of oil you get.

Those workers are gypsies. They are the only one willing to do this job. Finding well paid jobs is impossible for them.

Interesting! Yet, I really do not care for any perfume that has a “flowery” smell.

If Salt bae offers a steak cooked in Bulgarian rose oil for 1 million dollars, people are still gonna pay for it 😂

Just wondered if there is a bulgarian rose honey 😅 and if it's also very expensive.

There's is no rose honey, because bees don't collect nectar from roses. But in Bulgaria we have roses in a lot of things. There is a rose petals jam for example, it's known to give you the shits if you have a lot of it 😅 FYI we have Bulgarian lavender honey.

Bulgarian rose oil is like an octopus hiding underneath the waves of the ocean. Difficult to capture its true essence, however people will stop at nothing to get what they need. It's give and take. When you offer a higher interest, chances are it's gonna grow eventually.

When these workers are working so hard, why can't they make their own brand of perfume? I think it always benefits them if the distribution is also done by them.
