This video is about Why buy breeder queens. For my operation here in Brittany, I need to at least start with well-selected queens, if I have any chance of raising some good stocks!

its a great way to start but it can take a long time. the daughters you open mate will or may have only a max of 50% of the mother queens genetics as you probably already know. testing and culling to promote the best ones with the strongest traits will help you! it's a hard process. good luck!
@smolen
@smolen Год назад
it is not as obvious and easy like adding pigment to a bucket of paint. Because of large number of chromosomes predicting gene expression is quite complicated even if you use instrumental insemination (drones are not random). It is also good to know that hygienic behaviour (varroa resistance also) is determined not by single allele (gene) but specific combination of alleles, thus the outcome is depending on quality and stability of infroduced gene poll, saturation of area with valuable drones and your luck.

Really interesting stuff Richard. I’ll try one of Duncan’s queens next year I think based on your results and given that he’s uk based. How much should I expect to pay for his inseminated Buckfasts? I’m relatively happy with my attempts in this first year of queen rearing, my final graft of thirty cells has given me 17 marked queens all now doing well in their 6 frame poly nucs. All fed and treated with fingers crossed for the winter. Also, I noticed today that the bees are suddenly going crazy on the very abundant ivy here in sunny Derbyshire which is good to see. It’s seems that like you, we also are having a last minute turn of good weather at the moment. It’s just a shame we didn’t get it during the summer flow. All the best and many thanks for the great videos. Cheers Kim

@kimberesford2444 3 года назад
Richard Noel it’s funny how predictive text almost makes sense when it gets it wrong. I’m sure I typed “17 MATED queens”? Regarding the breeder queens I presume £150 is for the inseminated queens? Certainly not a prohibitive cost but expensive enough to make you do everything possible to get them accepted.
@richardnoel3141

Kim Beresford lol indeed John! if your buying a good inséminateur queenshe can indeed be a lot more. I’ve heard of some people paying up to 1,000 euros for a top queen! She was probably worth It too if you run a large queen rearing operation and want to bring in highly selected genetics

Hi Richard, great video again! Very interesting to listen where you are at right now regarding breeding and great trick to get the bees in the pot! Will copy that😊 Regarding breeding i got very fortunate to have a buddy here in germany whos a professional and involved in a buckfast vsh program in bavaria. What i learned is, its an incredible amount of work of a few and kind of impossible to get great genetics easy on the internet, because its still a long way to go and the best vsh breeders in europe like paul jungels in luxemburg dont sell their great queens just like that. Unfortunately there are also people who make money by saying its varroa resistant etc. he told me. I chose now that next season i will start my own breeding line/s and will get nearly all my queens a controlled mating every year to get a feet on the ground, hopefully harvest more honey and dont have to buy queens. Right now i think its a great idea and i can do the job😅 will see how it goes. Greetings, Flo

Ackerbau und Viehzucht thanks, yes Indeed. I completely agree. I just joined a similar breeding group and already I am seeing much lower mite levels in the queens I am open mating than the ones I paid good money for, as per the video! Yes it’s a huge amount of work but it is worth it in the long term! You may have noticed the pedigree card that came with the Dr Peter Stoffen queen clearly shows it inséminated with Paul Jungels lines, sadly it does not seem to perform against varroa. However it’s a lovely queen and I am sure will perform well next year!

Thank you for another great video. I really enjoyed it. I’m curious about something that if you have time I was hoping you might answer. I’ve heard that artificially inseminated queens are more likely to be superseded. Is this true or is this just a marker of a poorly inseminated queen and they need to get better quality queens?
@richardnoel3141
@richardnoel3141 3 года назад
Hi Heather, There is some evidence to suggest that some inseminated queens are not as long-lasting as some open mated queens, but this may be the way she is inseminated (not correctly) or not enough semen. There is also an issue that if the queen is not given enough space to move around after shes been inseminated for the sperm to migrate to the Spermatheca. It is said it's very important she had good movement to do this and not just stuck in a tiny cage. Mating nucs or nucs allow greater movement! although the process of producing inseminated queens is complicated, to have such quality queens that will still lay for two years still akes the queen a very viable proposition. in this case, quality is far better than quantity in terms of future daughter production!

@richardnoel3141
@richardnoel3141 3 года назад
Mike Bandte May be but when you considered where the mother and drone lines have come from, ( the pedigree) and the cost with the claims, you would at least expect to see a lower mite count! I am currently testing other queens and their mite counts are significantly lower. Just from Open mating in my yard. The last one was an inséminated queen with known drone lines Should have even a little better in my mind!
@MikeBandte
@MikeBandte 3 года назад
@@richardnoel3141 But that is not the case. As a breeder you are not only looking after the Varroa. As a Carnica Varroa tolerance breeder( in Germany), I am looking for well-behaved, not runny, healthy, with a good brood nest, not swarming, Vorroa tolerance and they should make also a lot honey. Varroa tolerance makes about 40% of the numbers that the Queen are rated for. Sorry for my bad english. You are going into breeding. We are gonna see what you think in 5 years. By the way.
