I'm not really surprised, people tend to think beginners always buy "cheap" guitars, or any other instrument come to that i guess. "Cheap" being relative to the costs of what we think of as a "Good quality" instrument. Many cheaper ones will come with a body made from Alder or some other wood and a maple neck. Obviously there is different qualities to the wood in many cases, but a decent piece of Maple or Alder for instance is gonna be fine really. Some of the H.B.s are made from 3 pieces for the body from what i can see. Often this makes a stronger body than a single piece. For a beginner, if it's an electric, the components only need to work and it needs to sound reasonable, a beginner isn't going to have an ear to detect slight muddiness in a neck pick up say. The most important component for any guitar is the neck, if it's straight or can be adjusted, the frets are levelled and the scale length is right then it should be "playable" enough. Even if the nut is a bit off. If it's more than a bit off then a new nut isn't a huge cost. I think it's fair to say most beginners give up because their guitar is badly set up, not intoned so nothing ever sounds right. One of the higher strings is stuck, or becomes stuck, in its' slot. Frets are not correctly spaced, or near enough. Tuners don't stay in tune. String heights are all over the shop. But even if it is a cheaper model many can be set up and be more than good enough for someone to learn on. Christ some of the "affordable" things you had to learn on back in the day were atrocious compared to today. With CNC machinery if they're set up properly there's no excuse for badly spaced frets and wonky necks etc, even in a cheaper one. With the H.B.s there are so many reviews on them it's far easier to research the on to suit,both for cost and the type of guitar you want. If you look at many of them priced at £127 plus a bit of postage, even a set up down the guitar shop and you have a good guitar for what..? A couple hundred quid. Yes i know for some that's not affordable, but for those who can it's ridiculous when you think about it. What's their Tele deluxe cost, something around £140..? The black paisleys look stunning for £127!! And every review i've seen rates them very well. And if you carry out a few well thought out upgrades you have something that'll take on a Fender. And hold its' own. Some will do that out of the box.. One reason they do cost less is Thomman have them built and shipped to their warehouse, then to the customer..NO supply chain adding on their mark ups. You pay a Grand for a Fender how much of that is for the supply chain middlemen..? A fair chunk i'll bet. And even their cheapest ones come with a 3 YEAR guarantee!! 3,not 2. If it's not playable send it back no arguments. What the hell more could anyone possibly want? Ok there might be an odd mark or something, maybe the dots on the side of the neck aren't quite centred on some, but C'mon, really..? I've had that on a Fender, a scratch. Not a bad one but even so. Pay a bit more you get a bone nut, or locking nut and a Floyd Rose special bridge I think there's a model for £127 comes with that. Can you gig the things? Yes. Will they stand up to being gigged for a long time? I think they probably will. All i'd say is...Fill yer boots...
@ianrichardson3968
@ianrichardson3968 5 лет назад
@steve wagner Cool...I'd guess that's gonna involve some serious thinking to come up with the right theme.. Big fan of CBGs myself, if you're a Blues player you can't get a more authentic blues tone on anything else. Personally i think a 4 string CGB is a better starting point for beginners than a full size 6 string. Even if it's a fret less with a slide. little bit of practice and basic instruction and you can play music...what more do you want..? Plenty of good lessons on youtube and far easier to follow and learn if you've never plucked a string before. Even getting the idea of 1--4--5-- is far easier. Good luck with it, hope it goes well.. On the subject of H.B.s they're obviously not as finely made as a Fender or Gibson.(Although gibson seems to be in a bit of a pickle at the moment) or a PRS for instance. But when you look at the quality of a HB and the cost and compare that to say a Fender or PRS or Gibson you have to ask if the more finely built guitar is say 10 times the cost...is it 10 times better? Even though it may be a "finer" instrument? And some cost even more. Now it turns out that on the cheaper H.B.s like the TE30 for instance, the "woodgrain" you see through the transluscent paint is in fact not the wood grain. I forget now what the process is called, photo something..it's basically a photo bonded to cardboard and then bonded to the wood. Now you might think what the ----...! But, at those prices this has obviously reduced the cost of the body enabling them to produce a much better neck, the really important bit..after all if you take a neck off a Fender tele and screw it on a rectangular piece of plank and you still have an electric guitar...ask Les Paul....and Bo Diddley. Although that wasn't off a fender but same idea..Bolt on a functionable bridge and some reasonable sounding pick ups and you're good to go. Does it make the guitar a bad guitar? Not really. And i'm willing to bet many of those who have done a review on the models they use this process on didn't even know. And still said it's great for it's silly money.. So if anyone decides to convert one of these types into a string through....be very careful because it will chip a chunk out when your drill bit goes through. I'd suggest only drilling through until the point the drill bit shows and then carefully drill the last bit from the back of the body. When i get to that i was thinking about counter sinking the ferrules just below flush with the body...i might re-think that though. A bit of masking tape over the back might help..i say might.

Amen brother, did I ever learn this the hard way. I stayed away for 40+ years, all because I started with shit. Thousands of hours using a piece of lumber, I should have sold it to someone siding a shed. As it was, my parents just threw it away when I joined the Army, good riddance to bad rubbish and all of that. They were going to give it to a guitar player in our area and she just said, no thank you, I appreciate it, but it's unplayable. All these years later, I bought an Epiphone LPJ, it is just awesome, I've since bought 7 other guitars, one being a Gibson SG and I'm finally getting it. I actually play my Epi's for the most part, I love the necks, but I also have a good feel for my Squire SS bass, I wish I could have a small do over, but that's life. My $99 Epi brought me back, though they will most likely cost 2 bills now, still, that's not much, I even play mostly acoustic, though I also play through a DG 15 and a Laney TI115, but I don't bother others unplugged, so I might just buy an Epi 335 or even the P93 (that has me all girly inside atm, if they'd only bring back that Chicago Blue!) I also want 3 of the Harley Benton's, the PRS style has me a bit squishy too as does the DC and LP Cherry burst. All I have to do is sell the wife and it'll be on! Hell, she's worth a good Gibson Custom, but imagine all the HB's I could get!

Too well said. I have put off playing guitar for years because of a crap acoustic in the house. Recently sat down with something a bit better and the difference was amazing, scary thing is the guitar that was pretty nice was a cheap instrument a friend had and had done some basic work on it.

Totally agree. I hate it when I see "beginners" or "entry level" when these guitars are described. As if you need to spend thousands of dollars in order to have something that is up to the standard of what these elite guitar players must have. Yes, a Fender Strat is a better guitar, but not $2,000.00 better. I have been playing 36 years and love the hell outta these guitars.

It will take a lot of work and beers to make it playable or I'll just sell this POS for 50$. And yes, my next is going to be original Strat. They may harp whatever they want, but there IS a difference in playability and not a small one. I have to say I own 3 Harley Bentons and all of them have come in set up better than any sub $1000 guitar I have ever bought. I have never bought a Epi or a Schecter that came set up out of the box anywhere close to my Bentons. Though I will agree with if you clean up and polish the frets OMG they are just that much better. But they have all been wonderful out of the box.

Exactly what I just thought ... I've heard of really expensive Gibsons and Fenders that where almost unplayable. I do understand that this can happen with every brand or model but the thing is, if I spent 1000 bucks and then have to take it to a shop to have it set up right and pay another 200 the guitar costs me 1200 bucks but if I bought a HB for 150 Bucks I have a chance to get a decent guitar for 150 or, if it needs setup 350 bucks. After that the difference in sound and quality is not that big for a beginner. So I think these are good for beginners as long as they know some basics about guitar setup because and have a shop or someone who can do the work for them. The only thing that is better for beginners is buying from a local music store where the store will set up the guitar for you as an after sales service. This way you can freely choose whatever guitar you like an try it before you buy and don't have to worry about seting it up. You can even get a HB that way if you live near the Thomann Store in Germany but I think most people would purchase them online.

REALLY? REALLLLLLYYYY? My strat copy was simply unplayable. Low E was touching frets, whammy bar was wrong- too thin and spun freely, doesn't stay in tune even when being played, it's totally unshielded, buzzes like hornets nest on any sound with gain, neck bridge had to be replaced, replacement sent was too thin, so I've made myself brass one. Magnets were far too low, had to raise them. Neck will have to be adjusted for curvature - high E buzzes on frets and intonated. DO not bend more then a hair, as it will get out of tune in a second. In short: DO NOT BUY. I'm fed up with this glowing reviews. I have another custom and it's like comparing a 30 years old Yugo to 2021 Cadillac. My next single coil is original Strat. It's still: you get what you pay for.

Probably one of the most important things I have learned over the years is to do my own setups; as I'm a left handed player, it has been my experience that most shops don't know how to do a proper lefty setup. With the HB guitars, this also comes into play, as they're not very well set up prior to shipping, so you're really better off if you can do it yourself. They're good guitars, to be sure, but you do need to know what you're doing to make them playable for you or whomever you're giving one to.

I bought a T52 last year and was blown away with the build quality. The neck is the best, smoothest, and most pleasing to play that I’ve ever had. I’m in my 60’s, I’ve played a lot of guitars. My go to live guitar is my ES 339, but I play my T52 at all rehearsals and practice. I’ve played live with it, no issues. Pple don’t believe that I paid under £90 for it. Thanks for a great video; lots of valid points there, dear Sir. Just a fortnight ago I purchased a TE-52 and, indeed, there's very little I could complain about. Great sound, fantastic playability. What I did on the first day was adjust the truss rod (straightened the neck a tiny bit) and put on new strings since the guitar had come with 9-42's while I normally play on 10-46's, and - voila! - it has become just the kind of guitar I needed as complementary to my Gibson SG... ;)

Thank you very much for this, Andrzej. I bought a second hand ST62 (after listening to one of your reviews - it is even the same colour!), from Ebay, so I got the best of both worlds (I should have said that I am a beginner). The punter selling it had put on a funky retro-styled lime green scratch plate (looks better than the description!) and he set it up nice and low, so easy to play. Don’t! Play it first, it may be perfectly well set up already and you’ll be wasting money! As you have an Epi already you can obviously play and have something to judge it by. Play it for a week or two, adjust the action, use your tuner to check the intonation at the 12 fret (easy to adjust with a small cross head screwdriver) if it feels all wrong and you can’t make the necessary adjustments yourself, THEN take it in for a set up! I recently bought a Burny Les Paul Custom that came almost perfectly set up apart from the pickups being a little high for my taste!

All the setup adjustments for just about any guitar are available on YT Videos and you only need Allen keys and Feeler Gauges to do them. They aren't difficult and you can improve the playability of any guitar/ bass. There are even DIY fret level and fret crowning tools that can be made for cheap and lots of YT Videos showing how to do it. For "fret sprout" all you need are some files and tape. In general the cheapest models will require more work but once you get to the $200 range and above most reports state they're pretty ok.

The necks are good, they stay in tune, the finish and wood selection are nice, and they can be taken apart without worry and modified. These guitars give more than you do in terms of cost. An actual value in which you feel satisfied that the money you spent on an item actually went into that item in materials and labor. RARE.

I have had an awful lot of guitars in my time, mostly in the £500 / £1000 range and I have had great experiences and not so great experiences. I have recently invested in two Harley Benton guitars. The TE52 NA and the GS Mini Travel guitar. Both are absolutely outstanding guitars for the money. The TE52 NA, I have replaced the nut, the string trees, the saddles for compensated brass saddles and I will be doing a bit of shielding work ( and also changing the machine heads for locking machine heads ) The stock tuners on my guitar are excellent at holding the tuning, so it is not a huge necessity, rather a personal preference. How anyone can complain at the Rosswell pickups is totally beyond me. They are fantastic pickups and I would not be in a hurry to change them. I have used guitars with much more expensive pickups which were nowhere near these. Overall the HB TE52 NA is a stunning guitar. Solidly built and mine was actually pretty good out of the box ( the action was on the high side but this took only a few tweaks to sort out ) Massively impressed, to the point of maybe buying another to really go to town on ( Bigsby trem / leather scratch plate / filterton pickups etc ) The wee GS Travel E Mahogany is THE best instrument I have bought in a long time. Complete with a decent gig bag and at just over a hundred quid ??? It sounds amazing. If you are looking for a guitar to take with you everywhere, this is the one - I LOVE mine already, I've had it just a few days and I can't put it down. Like Andrzej says : change the strings, set them up ( or have someone do it for you ) it really is just minor tweaking and you will be amazed at the quality to price ratio.

A year or so on and I can honestly say the Harley Benton TE52 is still right up there with my favourite guitars. The mod.'s I did were not at a huge cost ( the finished project came in at around the £220 mark ) and it plays and sounds as good as any Tele under £1000 I have ever played ( seriously ) The tuning stability is excellent ( I went with Gotoh vintage style locking tuners a Graph Tech Tusq Nut ) I was so impressed I also bought a TE90 QM ( a semi hollow Tele style guitar with P90 pick ups - a wonderfully versatile instrument ) and a Fusion T HH EB OCT ( ridiculously high spec : Ebony board, stainless steel frets, locking tuners, Wilkinson Trem, Graph Tech Tusq Nut, Roswell Alnico 5 Humbuckers and a flawless build quality - zero work required. It came perfectly set up and is an astounding instrument ) I am 60 years old and remember when an inexpensive guitar was not an advisable purchase - they were dreadful. Today, there are absolutely superb guitars at amazingly low prices. Harley Benton, for me, have shone in this regard.

Last year I bought a player series Tele from a shop who set it up for me and did a reasonable job. When I got it home I realised the volume pot needed replacing as it was scratchy, ordered a new one and replaced it. A few months later the tone pot went the same way, again easy replacement. Now there are one or two frets that buzz so I probably need to adjust the truss rod oh and the machine heads could be better. My point is this: I have a Harley Benton CST-24T arriving tomorrow and if only needs the same amount of work as the Tele I'll be delighted because it cost me half as much.

The problem with those is that if you start changing this and changing that , and you cant do the changes yourself , you end up with a guitar which was 150 pounds to start with, but it ended up costing you 400 pounds. And guess what, it is still a harley benton that you cannot sell for more than 130 if you get bored with it. Whereas for this amount of money or maybe a bit more , you can get a decent classic vibe 50s squire, or get a used faded gibson studio les paul or sg, or a mexican fender, and actually have the real deal which you can resell for little loss or even profit if you are lucky.

I have had 2 Harley Bentons now and both came set up almost perfectly and aside from the cheaper one having shit strings, they were perfectly playable right out the box. The 450 pro I got had D'Adario 9s on it though which is what I use anyway so I didn't even need to change the strings. The gold top I got had a couple of tiny chips in the paint around the pickups, Thomann gave me a partial refund though. But the guitar cost me £130 and it sounds great and feels just as good to play as any epiphone... or dare I say it any gibson I have played! My Harley Benton wish list is growing rapidly! Astounding value for money... I'll be buying as many as I can get my hands on before they come to their senses and up the prices.

I got three Harley Bentons. One is a small Acoustic Traveller which is my most played guitar because it always sits on my sofa. It's not the best guitar but it's perfect for strumming in the evening. One is an electric Ukulele and honestly, it's simply fantastic. And the last one is one of those cheap DIY Telecaster sets. It was fun to put together, it plays great and it sounds like a Tele. For € 77,-! I played worse guitars which are way more expensive. I also owned an Acoustic which I gave to a friend who was a beginner. I don't know if they are beginner guitars because (with the exception of my Yamaha and my Hagstrom) I had to do some work on every guitar I ever got. They can be, that's for sure. That being said, it seems the Harley Benton "brand" (sorry, but I don't think "brand" when I hear Harley Benton, I think: Thomann) came a long way. I'm actually thinking of getting one of their new Fusion line. And maybe another DIY kit because it's so much fun. If only they had a LP Junior kit. For beginners I'd still recommend a Yamaha Pacifica. For two reasons: I have never played a bad one and they are usually playable right out of the box. Yamaha seems to have very good quality control. Aaaand, I also openly admit that I'm a Yamaha fanboy. :)

The good news is that these can be a great platform to learn about the nuts and bolts and how to make mods. Eventually I'll want one of their Tele's but the reviews are clear on this one - change the tuners! If you look through their website, you will see that many of their guitars come with Grover tuners. Bonus! I'm not so sure what prompted HB to put such lousy tuners on the Tele's...

Other budget guitars have free shipping--(and free returns on amazon)--so this was tough. But, no bad reviews for HB,. Other guitars are hit and miss and would certainly need a set up right away. I bit the bullet and ordered the HB. It came from Germany in 4 days! Beautiful and playable out of the box! I honestly can't find a problem with it! The action is great. It is a solid guitar. Shipping charges would have been spent for a tune up on a different guitar I think.

Apparently Harley Benton has stepped up their game in the past few years. I bought 3 in the past year. First one is a LP Jr. Style. This guitar is flawless. The neck is the best of the three, and the others are very good. It's pellam blue, love it. The second one I was a little concerned about after reading the reviews. But I wanted something with active pickups. It's a JA model. Two active humbuckers, minimal controls. The review mentioned the upper frets tend to extend beyond the edge of the fretboard and had been polished down. Not mine, looks, and plays great. The new one is a TE-25 anaversary. I always wanted a hardcore traditional Telle. This is the one. The string height is a bit too high. I can take care of it. Love my Telle! I do own a few other more expensive name brands, so I'm not just comparing H/B to another H/B. I don't have anything over $1000.00

Is there such a thing as a "Beginners" guitar? Depends on what you can afford,you have the money a Gibson or Fender could be your first guitar. As to the H.B.s. I recently bought a TE 30 Tele, just to find out if these things are as good as it's supposed to be. Finish on it is very good, it looks really nice and the pick guard is nice also. Stays in tune very well, Nut is fine. Volume, tone and selector switch seem fine. Pick ups are better than expected. No crackling from the jack socket. Yes this one has a top loader bridge but that can be replaced and drilled for through body stringing, at some point. The neck was bang on out the box, Neck feels good, not at all like a baseball bat as some say, i have short fingers and the neck is quite nice for me. Thd Maple looks good as well, nice grain on this one. Only thing i needed to do was as you say clean the fret board, not that it was dirty. And one or two frets needed levelling a bit. A fret polish new strings. Re-set the string height a little and an intonation check and she's good to go. And, for £85 plus change and less than £9 postage from Frankfurt, in 3 days! This guitar looks a treat to be fair,and with some upgrades, which ain't gonna cost the earth...It's going to be a nice Axe for very little money. And this is one of the cheapest ones..!! It plays very well for this silly money and sounds more than acceptable. Oh and i did make some slight adjustments to the pick up heights as well, mostly on the low E side just to balance out the G, B and low E string a bit. It is a little heavy but compared to my Les Paul it's really not an issue,it feels solid. I'm seriously thinking of getting another one in the future as with the translucent paint job it will relic quite easily. And that one will end up with a pair of Buckers in it.

Hi Steve. The good old days eh....I remember tuning forks, damned thing wasn't much use for eating you dinner either...I hadn't a clue. I don't think i had a guitar that was actually in tune for long enough. Intonement i'd never even heard of. String height was what it was, no idea on that either. I didn't even realise the screws that held the pickups in could also be used to adjust them. Getting new strings was not so easy so you just carried on with what you had, and boy was it a sod if that skinny one bust! Build quality..? There wasn't any. Fret spacing...God knows. But, when i got my first "decent" guitar,which was a Hondo strat, Jeeze....And i don't suppose that was all that good but at least the neck was better. Like most things today people are spoiled somewhat when you think of the number of manufacturers,amp options, pedals...which i never had for long enough either. ..strings etc etc. And now with computers you don't even need an amp..! My first ever guitar was a classical thing that came in the usual shaped box, with a tuning fork and a book...Bert Weedons play in a day...Yeah right..

@ianrichardson3968
@ianrichardson3968 5 лет назад
Hi Steve. something strange going on, i have another reply from you but when i click on reply...it's not there.. So 2 tabs then...Shovel guitars, you can make one out of anything, i've seen one made with a toilet seat before today. Who needs tonewood...I'd agree with you that no two guitars have the same tone or feel, even if they're the same make and model. I don't think it's just down to the wood used, i think it's a combination of the body wood, and no two pieces of mahogany, alder or whatever are the same. The neck, the parts the strings (and type of strings) are in contact with and, if it's electric, the pickups. And i doubt any two of the same pickups are going to be the same either. The way in which the sound travels through the guitar is never going to be the same. Most say the sound waves resonate through the guitar, or is it more of a reverberation through the guitar? The way sound waves bounce around the sound chamber of an acoustic will never be the same. With some you may not be able to tell the difference, someone else will. But some you can tell they're different. Do any two people hear tone in the same way? I doubt that as well. Tone is a personal thing though so what one person likes another won't so much. As to slides like you i've used all sorts of things, steel, copper, aluminium, pot ones, brass ones, bits of round bar, cigarette lighters...round ones of course...even plastic tubes. I prefer flat wound as well because it makes more sense to me as you're getting better contact with the strings than with round wound. I set the strings level on the tops rather than following the neck radius, i want the slide in contact with all the strings at the same time. There's some really good CBG channels as you're probably aware, a few of my fav ones are puckett cigar box guitar, shane speal, uncle mark and Justin Johnson is well worth a look. He plays a shovel and CBGs as well as standard guitars. And he's a hell of a good guitarist as well. Speaking of which i'll give a recommendation to one Dave Simpson. If you've not come across his channel he's a real character..but he's a bloody good player. Most of his videos start with an intro of his own compositions and they are stunning. The recent one he did on the new fender voodoo child hendrix strings is awesome, that one comes after the review. He doesn't do the usual lessons as most do, but christ he can play..Give him a look.. Hopefully slide will help you get back to playing. One other thought if you have trouble gripping a pick, something i've always had an issue with for some reason..they seem to end up where o don't want the things. I solved it by using a bit of self adhesive velcro i got from Halfords for a different purpose. I just stick some each side of the pick. If that's useful ..

Hi Steve..now i have no clue about Hawaiian steel guitars to be honest, so i can't comment on them. I do however like the sound and tone of them. Then again i love the sound of bagpipes as well..and make no apology for that. I'm also not that up on Floyd rose bridges either as i've never had a guitar with one fitted. Always been more than happy with a strat trem and bridge. Like yourself i always liked Dwayne Eddy, his sound was different from the usual at the time. I might still have some old singles and an album or two of Dwaynes' somewhere...not sure. Nothing to play vinyl on either...god i miss vinyl.. He had a good voice as well. My very first guitar, if i didn't already say, was a classical style one with nylon strings. It came with pan pipes...Erm...yes. And a book...play in a day with Bert Weedon...Well that didn't last long. Interestingly i was watching a youtube vid a while back that asked is the guitar dead..finished? I'd say yes...and no. No because many of us still listen to guitar driven music whether it be blues, metal or what ever. But yes because the younger generation, being brought up in the tech world, are listening to "music" that's created on a computer with software most of it any way. Yes there's the Sheerens of this world but as far as the youngsters go guitars don't really exist for them. In my day, and yours by the sound of it, we lived through a time when so many guitar players came up with different sounds, rock n roll, The shadows, Hendrix, SRV, Heavy rock and the beginnings of metal with the likes of Sabbath. Prog rock, free, cream, Peter Green to name a few. Glam rock with the likes of Bolan, Bowie, the sweet when they did stuff like ballroom blitz, Clapton and the unique sound of Queen and Brian Mays guitar...I'll never forget the first time i heard brighton Rock. Then guns n roses, u2, AC/DC and many many more. These days though, even with the plethora of amps n pedals and software effects no one is really coming up with that new guitar sound, and the stuff the younger generation listen to isn't bands any more, so the instruments aren't there any more. They haven't spent years touring round the pubs n clubs in a beat up ole tranny van learning their craft, honing their skills and their sound. Now it's instant fame on bloody x factor until simon hightrousers "discovers" his next big money magnet. On the other hand, sales of guitars is booming, the number of manufacturers is booming. Everything from HBs to boutique £4000+ super guitars or an "old fashioned Fender or Gibson. Or an epiphone or squire. And that comes back round to the question of what is a beginners guitar? Because as we've said now you can buy a good playable instrument for not a lot of money. Which encourages beginners more than they might have been back in the day when the neck didn't fit properly and the frets were all over the shop, you had no idea how to tune it and most had no clue about intonation..many still don't on that one but they often trip over it on the internet.. Unless you spent money or found a decent Japanese something or other. and had a guitar tech available that didn't cost more than the guitar to set up...if it could be. You can even buy a decent little practice amp for a reasonable price. In many ways people are spoiled rotten these days...and maybe that isn't such a good thing in a way.

I love the guitars. Customer service from Thomann was hot and cold... mostly hot. But when they sent the wrong guitar and UPS damaged it in shipping, it was a month-long nightmare to get what I ordered and for them to take back the damaged wrong guitar. @@yaguitar I had no issue with my first guitar order, or my second. Everything was exemplary. My third order took twice as long as promised but that was the fault of UPS. They eventually admitted that someone just left my box sitting in a building for two days before someone thought to wonder where it belongs. It was the fourth time I ordered that introduced me to the flip-side of Thomann. They have no contract with UPS regarding damaged shipments, so each case has to be negotiated, investigated, and eventually settled individually. And the customer gets caught up in the middle of all of that nasty business between Thomann and UPS. You don't get satisfaction until they've worked out their differences. Thomann also refused to absorb the extra Customs costs caused by their failure to properly fill out the paperwork. I had to pay an extra $55 or UPS wouldn't deliver my guitars. @@yaguitar the guitars themselves are great! They far exceeded any expectations I had. I ordered an ST-62 Strat as a backup for my Fender Stratocaster and while the finish is slightly better on my Fender, the Harley Benton was $129 and instantly became my favorite guitar. I like its darker tone and that it's just slightly lighter (less than a pound difference). And who would expect a $129 guitar to come with D'Addario strings? It sounds good, it feels good, it looks good, and it plays well. I did have to tighten the output jack the week I got it. One of the others had a pickup frame screw that wasn't fully threaded in. And the tone pot on my TE-40 was loose. I had to tighten that. Other than those things, I've been incredibly happy with the guitars. It would just be nice if Thomann would focus on getting their return policy straightened out. It was a month-long headache over something that should have been an email and photo showing it was the wrong guitar and was damaged in shipping. Each day for four days they wanted more photos of different things, the damage, the full guitar, the boxes, and then the packing in the boxes. They could have asked for all of that in a single e-mail. All-in-all, I'd buy guitars from them again, but I'd be on pins and needles until the package was finally delivered and checked out. There's so much stress when they mess up that it takes the fun out of New Guitar Day. But... you get through it and have great guitars at a fraction of the price of better-known brands.

This video is all facts. I use bentons every day and for all my covers. People often give me compliments for the tone I use and get from my guitars. Everything is stock, no changes made to any of 'em. The secret to good tone (aside from your fingers), is proper EQ, not using more distortion than you need, proper mic usage for the situation and using the right effects in the right amounts. You can get a good tone with a 79€ guitar (I've done it myself. My st-20 is 79€ and is over 10 years old). Oh, and ofc, the quality of the amp matters more than the guitar itself. To all beginners i advise to get the most beautiful guitar you can find. Save some money as i did for two years. Trust me...You will not let him rot in the corner collecting dust. Starting on a guitar you bought in an impulse will rot away in the corner when you find out guitar playing hurts in the hands and fingers. Not when you invested in the guitar, dreamed about it for years. You come home see the beautiful guitar and you want to play it because you are so proud on it.

That is not because of HB but because they are the only one having 3 guitars i doubt between. I love my Indonesian Squier Bullet because of the neck and weight of the body so I modded the F out of it. Put more into it than I paid for it! Don't care because it's perfect for me. The only thing I didn't change was the body and neck. Everything else got tossed. My LP copy has also been modded to death. To work on a HB is not ideal for me but a great project for others to do. I think my next purchase will be something I don't have to do anything radical. That would be great. Damn these guitars are tempting! Everything you said in this video I agree with totally.

These "tips" apply to virtually every guitar sub £500 that is bought online and supplied from a warehouse. Many more expensive guitars need fettling too. The best way to get a well set-up guitar, irrespective of price, is to go to a shop and choose one; though that isn't always possible: where I live there used to be 4 or 5 shops where now there are none.

As a life-long musician my experience with high-dollar guitars is they too were not all created equal. There was a time in the 70s when buying any Fender was a crap-shoot. With modern tooling and manufacturing these low dollar guitars are better than you think. When gigging in Europe it is cheaper to buy a Harley Benton bass than paying the airline baggage fees of $200 each way! (US to Germany) I would either return the bass or give it away, plus I saved money while not having to schlepp my bass thru the airports.

Just bought an HB DC 6/12. I was going to get the Epiphone originally but the lower cut out scared me off. Anyway, I stumbled across the Harley Benton model and for the money it seemed like such a better value. I was honestly very nervous about it though until I got it and played it. 4.50.00 as opposed to 9.00.00 is a huge difference. Every once in a while price dictate quality. I did change the strap mount location because of neck dive with a new strap lock kit but i expected that. Bottom line is I love the guitar and would buy another HB. Great value people!

My advice would be... don't level/dress the frets within the first six to twelve months. The wood is a little under-seasoned and may move a bit. I've had two HBs - an ST-70 and a CST-24HB. The ST seems to be stable now (after a year) but the CST hasn't quite settled after six months. Both have had fret buzz that has now gone without doing anything but polishing the frets. I'd hate for anyone to spend time dressing frets on a new one just to have to do it again months later. Definitely not for beginners, or as an only guitar

Then soon im gonna get the Beatbass, because i want a bass, i have an electroacoustic ukulele from Them too. For me theyre the perfect, not main instruments but ones that Serve the purpose of specific sounds i dont use too Much.

Certainly. Shane from in the blues uses his CST 24 at gigs. I use my bass and the HB35 to record all the time and at band practice. Not sure about the really really cheap ones, but so far cant complain. The strat I have used, but I am not a fan of stats, even full price American fenders, so rarely find a need for the tones! I've had a few Harley Benton and kept five. My tips: - go through the fingerboard with a fret rocker (or a credit card) and take note of high frets. Do not hesitate to file them down if they cause buzzing when adjusting for low action. Do it with a cheap Chinese fret file from ebay. They're fine. - stay away from the sub-100€ offering. I hear the basses there are "ok" but no one says they're great and the rest is dodgy. The good stuff starts at 119€ with the ST-62. - be wary of newly introduced models. They go through a phase of improvement before being really good.. - come visit the Harley Benton Club at theharleybentonclub.proboards.com Advanced tip: question the electronics before you replace the pick-ups. Cheap components have low tolerances and replacing the potentiometers with better, more accurate ones, can make a difference to the sound or to how well they work. Bonus: come on, don't throw away good D'Addario strings if that's what your Harley Benton came with. No one played them and they're fine… says the guy who's boiled his bass strings twice ;-)
