Love being able to record the camera’s screen with the Ninja V, great for tutorials and vids. Never though to use the camera-computer function, not sure if it works the same for Canon as your Sony

I have it. I like it a lot. I use it on camera or I have it mounted to my DJI Ronin-S (I don't use it in that config very often) I also have it mounted in a small rig monitor cage....

I have had my Ninja V since it came out and it's an amazing piece of kit that I did not need. It is great to be able to use multiple cameras with the same SSD which makes workflow easier as you pointed out. It doers come in handy on my X-T3 if I need a front facing screen. It's expensive but will be worth it for some. Thanks for braving the cold to make this video!

It’s so nice being able to edit directly from that hard drive then only save the finished video. The prores codec is such a blessing and the SSD’s are dirt cheap!

Do you just slide off the atomos caddy (with the ssd in it) and plug it in to your computer using a SATA to USB cable and edit directly off that?

Went through a similar "agonizing" time of debating whether or not to buy the Ninja V to go on my a6400. Then, Atomos dropped the price of the Ninja V by some $350 for a month or so. Managed to find the ONE left in stock in Vancouver and raced with money in hand. My trip from discovery to acquisition was about 2 1/2 years and a few crappy used monitors from FB Marketplace. Couldn't be happier that I now have this little beast of a screen.

Just got the Ninja V for my A7III as well. I'm hesitant to mount it directly on the hot shoe mount of Sony since Ninja gets really heavy with NP-F970 batteries. Do you think the hot shoe mount can withstand that force or should I rather get a cage ?

Hey Dunna Did It. Have you been able to test the external recording much on this camera since January? I'm curious about the benefits if there are any at all. I saw Gerald Undone's video on this exact topic and I wasn't too convinced. He used 4:2:2 as a way to examine banding but it is the bit depth that affects banding more than anything. 422 comes in most handy with chroma keying. Also, I'm curious to see examples like the one you mentioned here, if it improves color data within S-Log2 or 3 footage. And I'm VEEERY curious about what it does for skin tones. One of my least favorite things about grading S-Log in the a7III is how color data in skin tones falls apart when I use a LUT, even one designed for this gamma, and you get weird blotchy artifacts that either don't match the rest of the skin at all or are distinctly less saturated, creating a block of b&w in the middle of someone's cheek. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, but wish I had a more technical description of it. If recording externally improves this, then buying the Ninja V would make some sense to me. Otherwise I see no benefit other than perhaps shooting green screen content, and using the monitor features, but then Atomos also sells external, camera-mounted monitors for less money. For work, I shoot on a GH5 and for interviews, where skin tones matter most, I shoot in 10bit 422. It does improve things, but I do sometimes find myself correcting similar blotchy artifacts, just not as much as on the a7III. Thanks, man!

I did the same, I put my a7iii in a small rig with the handle on top. Then the ninja on top of it. I found it adds enough weight that footage handheld comes out a little more stable. Most of all though just being able to shoot in 4k forever without worrying about it stopping recording is nice. Also, I think the screen on the ninja is much better when using manual lenses + focus peaking. Plus, just having a screen anyways is really helpful and it isn't that much more weight to be honest.

I have more of a question. I am brand new to film and have a canon dos sl1 with the 30 minute limit. So, if I buy the Atomos how do I record past that limit? Hoping that I could as I was comparing prices online, I hooked up my camera to see how long it would stay on in video mode with actually recording. I think I may have reached 25 min b4 the screen said I needed to to the button to record. So, how can I use this recorder to take out all of that fuss please ANYBODY!!

I have been thinking same too.... Would this clear up my issue on my FS5 and my A6500 that when I record in 4K using an external Small HD Monitor, as soon as I hit record my camera monitor goes black, so I am unable to use the touch screen autofocus on my A6500 for instance. Obviously there is no touch screen on my FS 5 but would it cure my camera monitor going black whin shooting 4K with external monitor? Thanks

Does anyone know if this would actually improve the overall quality of a 1Dx MK II? That's my primary camera still and was wondering if the Atomos would help give it a boost to stay relevant in 2023 since I use it for commercial work. Is there a noticeable difference in color science for me to push the grade in post or is the biggest draw just the pro res function? Or am I better off switching to a Pocket camera or something?

I've been using the Ninja V with my Canon 5D Mk IV for about a month now. Mainly I needed to get past the 30 minute recording limit (concert and dance performance shooting), but the Ninja's prores files are noticeably better than the files produced by the 5D, especially in low light/high ISO situations - less noise, no blown out highlights. It is almost like having an entirely new camera. I consider it money well spent.

Bought a Atomos Shogun Flame 4K. This has all this features but also have HDR monitoring and 1500 nits. And i bought it for 850 dollars with: Hdmi cabel, 240gb ssd, battery, smallrig cage/Sun hud and smallrig hotshoe. That was used marked. Did I do a good deal?

Enjoy the new gear dude! If it makes life a bit easier, then it's all good! The Atomos stuff is really great, and it's a huge help to nail manual focus, making sure stuff isn't blown out etc.etc.etc. I couldn't live without mine now to be honest. Love the video! One question though, do all these benefits translate to the a6400? I've been searching for hours and I can not for the life of me get a direct answer to see if stuff like 4K Face Detect AF will still work on this with the a6400 or not. I've found no one talks about the a6400 anymore lol. Just wanna make sure because it would such to drop $600 on it and it doesn't help me a ton more than my $150 Feelworld does.

I got the Shugun 7, worth it for the face detect alone, but the image anlaysis features, XLR in, and codecs were a huge change in my workflow for the better that I didn't expect. Also adds a lot of needed video features that the Sony A9 is missing and allows me to shoot better matchable video along side my A7RIII.

In my Sony A7III and the Atomos Ninja V, whenever I play to record in Pro Res Raw, the record button in the Atomos gets grayed out.

Now that its on sale it's REALLY tempting! But what's up with the inability to record in 120fps?☹️ is this an Atomos or Sony issue? Can there not be an update where it can be supported in future? What do you do when you want to record in 120fps? Just disconnect it? That's gotta be cumbersome.... Are there other monitors that can record in 120fps?

Hi I want one for all of the same reasons you have l have a6300 that’s shoots 6K and down sample it to 1080 or 4K is the atomosV going to read the 6K signal ?? Regardless I still want one Do you have fan noises?? Other have returned it for that JoP

It only reads the 4k signal because that’s all that the Sony’s output. As far as fans go, it’s there but it’s not that loud.

Is there a noticeable difference between the size of the sony screen and the ninja v? Like what is the overall real estate dimension size? Wondering if I should pick up a Shinobi for now as the total cost would be about $500 for batteries, and a cage, whereas the ninja v would be $1400 for batteries cage, 1tb ssd, where as the shogun would be about $1700 for batteries, ssd, cage - i'm thinking that 7" would be a much more noticeable difference than 5 inch but what do you think?

The 5” is definitely a big different. I personally prefer the 5” to a 7” for what I do but it comes down to personal preference

I've got this same setup (including the camlink 4k) & I discovered that i Really like the image i get when i let the Ninja down-res my 4k input to a 1080 output using the passthrough & recording into quicktime on my computer. Maybe even as good as the "infamous" All-I 1080p from Canon?!?

Hi I'm french, ad I have a Sony a7iii with 3 lens. I shoot in hlog 2 a'd have a Lilliput à 7s in external monitor. And I have question, with atomos your quality image are more beautiful in propres 8bit to xvhc Sony compressed 8bit? I don't if the price of atomos have more capabilities with my sony a7iii. Question on that right-angle HDMI cable, I have an A7R IV and it looked like the doors on camera ports would be in the way of the right angle cable. Did you have to take off the doors to make it fit or does it stick out far enough to go over them? On the A7R IV the doors stick out about 1cm when open and can't be removed.

On the a7iii, the doors don’t stick out like that so I’m not sure, they kind of just flop around (which is really annoying) but you can use other cables too.

Is there a way to use touch focus (for the lens to focus where you tap) on the Atomos screen? Liked for example tap the Atomos screen and have the lens focus where I tap, like it would if I tapped (with touch focus on) wherever I touch on the a7siii monitor?

I've had my eyes on the ninja V since it was released; however have been hard pressed to wait. Still heavily invested in Sony glass I'm holding off for the esteemed A7Siii and rumors for 4K 120p sound amazing. Because this recording format is over the limit for the Ninja V I've been holding off... I wonder if a higher recording formats will be available through software updates over time? What do you think, better to wait in case atomos releases a new recorder or send it?

That’s a really tough question. I have a tendency to get things NOW if I think they’ll benefit me now. Regardless of what may or may not be coming... but who knows if that’s the right call or not 🤷🏻‍♂️

Checking-in from May 2022.. The Atomos Ninja V is now at $399, and an A7III is around $1200 used.. Got 2x Atomos Ninja V and A7III. 2.5" SSD has also gotten cheaper.. Couldn't be happier.. Great inputs and video!

Wait, so it will keep autofocus in 4k with a monitor, so if i set a point to track focus it will hold that point when recording 4k, but no face tracking specifically in 4k? so it keeps af but loses face tracking?

Yes. On every Sony camera except the a6600, a7riv, zv1, and mayyyybe a9ii. You LOSE face tracking, but keep autofocus

Is the Atomos only for 4K ? Or can you Shoot 1080 on Camera to 1080 or 4K on the Atomos. I know this may be a simple question but all the content goes straight to the usefulness of 4K never 1080 uses if possible.

If you don't have a hard drive plugged in and record straight to the SD card on your camera would Face Tracking still be available? or is Face Tracking disabled for any monitor that is plugged into the Sony A7iii

Face tracking is disabled if you’re recording internally on the SD card. You have to be recording to the ninja v hard drive

Thank you for making this video. I’m curious, if you’re recording 4k only via hdmi to the ninja, will the A73 lcd screen still show up? Or does it go black?

Did you use any of the slog lut/video levels hacks that were mentioned by Gerald and others regarding to the slog signal being squashed? I'm trying to figure out if that is still an issue with this combination of camera and monitor.

Hey! I think what you're referring to is the legal/full range thing that Gerald was talking about for SLOG2. In his video, the atomos recording actually appears to be the "right" version as it's not clamped. I've definitely had better success grading log out of the atomos than I did internally.

Will I lose face/eye autofocus if I used this for a monitor display not recording? I want this just for that I hate using the lcd display on the back. I only use the view finder here and there

Depends on the camera. On some of the newer Sony’s they’ve fixed that but, but on the a7iii you will lose the face tracking.

I am in the same boat as you were. I have had it in my shopping cart for a good 7 months even prior to me getting my camera (XT-3). As you state it's not needed, but not having to use my camlink to show my screen would be most beneficial. Thanks for the video, I may be pulling the trigger on it or an action camera soon.

Nice vid, was searching for a decent external recorder for A7III when I ran across this vid. Question, you mentioned having face recognition and being able to record external at the same time. In my limited time with the A7III the face recognition is immediately disabled when the cam detects a monitor attached to the HDMI. How are you able to get around this?

Ugh I might have to get this I have the same Andycine monitor that you have and hate that focus gets turned off and also when I shoot 4k it does not put the ISO, Shutter etc on the screen so I have no idea if I am under exposed or over exposed. What I do is move to 1080p on the camera get all set and when its good I go back to the camera and move it back to 4k. Annoying! If i knew that I would have not have gotten the Andycine monitor even though it is a good monitor but hate that I cannot get those features due to Sony. Which I think maybe sony could fix with a firmware upgrade maybe?

Honestly, I doubt they will do a firmware update to fix that, you still don’t get all those features with this unit either, but you keep face tracking.

You mean, if you output 30fps over the HDMI, will the ninja turn it into 60? No I don’t believe that’s possible

I used to have a Video Device Pix video recorder which was able to record 60p Prores HQ even though I was outputting 24p from the camera. It kind of made an override of the incoming signal and recorded on to whatever framerate you selected.

I believe so but it can also be calibrated using an x-rite calibration tool

Seems worth it for face tracking in 4k alone. I hate that I have to unplug my current monitor to enable facetracking! Great video, more tempted to pick one up now!
