The current climate in the fitness and health industry had me believing that sugar/fructose/carbs were the reason I was overweight. So I cut out almost all starchy and sugary carbs, and ate only meat and veggies. I was literally a carbophobe/fructophobe. I did lose weight, but then I came across Layne and watched a series of his videos. Reluctantly, I reintroduced fruits/starches and actually COUNTED CALORIES as accurately as I could, and I began to lose weight even faster. Thank you so much Layne for calling out all of the BS in the industry.

pbpb253 I've been tracking everything closely for 4 months, so it's become second nature to me now. It's literally so easy today with all of the apps that are available. I'm still losing weight at a healthy rate and I actually get to ENJOY eating carbs/fruits. If I feel like having a cheat, well guess what, I TRACK IT and make sure sure I stay at my daily/weekly caloric intake and still LOSE WEIGHT. I agree that you don't have to track everything to the gram, but it really does help if you do. It would be like trying to save up some money for something without knowing 1. Your income and 2. Your daily living expenses. You could try, and probably will eventually have enough for whatever you wanted to buy, but knowing those two things give you a better and more accurate time and plan.

Hi, great vid, as usual. Just a quick note: Liraglutide is an analogue for one of the incretins we know about: GLP-1. The other is GIP. It's pretty clear from the data that although the "incretin effect" accounts for >2/3 of the Insulin response to food ingested orally (as opposed to parenterally), its the balance of GIP:GLP-1 that really affects your metabolic health, driven primarily by Insulin. GIP is mainly stimulated by food that is easily digested and absorbed in the proximal small bowel (K cells) , while GLP-1 is stimulated mainly by less easily digested food, which is absorbed more in the distal bowels (L cells). A high GIP:GLP-1 ratio is more likely to produce higher amounts of Insulin and drive Insulin resistance, which after decades cas result in Diabetes Mellitus Type 2. Lower GIP:GLP-1 (i.e. higher amounts of GLP-1) ratio actually promotes a more physiological Insulin response, and is not conducive towards developing hyperinsulinaemia/insulin resistance. In fact, in the Roux-en-Y type of gastric bypass surgery, much of the K cells which would otherwise produce GIP are bypassed, exposing the the L cells in the distal bowel to food more than they normally would, shifting the GIP:GLP-1 balance more towards GLP-1. We see this within 72 hours post gastric bypass surgery, considerably before patients lose weight, and this is the primary mechanism by which insulin resistance is reversed. So liraglutide, the GLP-1 agonist, actually acts as a pharmacological equivalent of Roux-en-Y, as do alphaglucosidase inhibitors and as will SGLT1 antagonists when they are eventually released, and shift the incretin balance more towards GLP-1, and thus helps to combat against, and over time potentially reverse Insulin resistance.

Great info. Data like these are what should be talked about these times and not still juggle around the simple concept of cal in vs cal out
@smallik81
@smallik81 4 года назад
@@sunnysideup5826 The calories model actually works pretty well if your metabolic apparatus, i.e. the underlying mechanisms by which we actually process and utilise food, is actually healthy. It's less useful outside of that environ, and a lot of the dysfunction is in due to insulin resistance and it's chronic inflammatory effects. So, there's truth to both sides. If you're metabolically healthy, your body can adequately handle eating higher amounts of sugar and carbs (even processed carbs). If you're insulin resistant, and some babies are actually born in such a state, the calorie model just won't work.
@sunnysideup5826
@sunnysideup5826 4 года назад
@@smallik81 True. But it's a vicious cycle. Establish to every mind first the merits of cal in vs cal out model then perhaps we can minimize faulty metabolic apparatus, insulin resistance being one. As for the inborn insulin resistance, that's like negligible number if we go by statistics and something the general public need not to worry and must be handled by medical experts. My point is at this day and age, with all the data we have, still people are arguing about the law of thermodynamics in nutrition

Layne, I've spent 4 years researching health and nutrition in a completely non bias view. With nutrition, I've concluded it all boils down to 3 simple rules in order of importance 1. Protein with every meal (minimum of 30g) 2. Avoid eating Fats and Carbs together 3. Avoid seed oils If you think about the 3 rules for long enough you'll realise the implications and how many foods you can't consume (and for good reason). The main thing that is removed from the diet is low protein processed foods containing seed oils and sugar together. These hijack you hunger control making it very hard for you to control calories in. When I say avoid fats and carbs together I mean , keep a carb meal low in fat (and vice versa). Avoiding fats and carbs together removes addictive foods such as chocolate, chips, fries, cakes, biscuits, fast foods etc. Two lifestyles that work are High protein, high carb, low fat Or High protein, high fat, low carb. I've tried both of these for long extended amount of times and both work equally as well.
@bidnow2946
@bidnow2946 4 года назад
Agree, except that protein does not really have to be "high" compared to "adequate" depending on the stage of your weight loss journey. Dietary protein is labeled as "high" when compared to the flawed U.S. DRI. Secondly, hunger control generally also leads to calorie intake control, which flows into Layne's CICO mindset. Thirdly, LCHF and LFHC diets are both used to treat Type 2 Diabetes, perhaps from an "energy toxicity" or "personal fat threshold" perspective suggested by Dr. Ted Naiman and others.
@tuckstar
@tuckstar 4 года назад
Nice reply and I agree 100% . It blows people minds when I tell them you can reverse type2 diabetes eating lots of sugar.. as long as you're in a calorie deficit . By high protein, I mean I stick with 1g protein per lb bodyweight. Bit more if dieting... if i go lower, I get hungry quicker. If you're obese, maybe 1g per lb lean mass is a better way to go. Ted Naiman is great!

Hi Layne! Could you ever look into doing a video on Philip Goglias method of burning fat, I read his book and he thinks that you dont at all have to go into a calorie deficient diet in order to lose body fat, and making your metabolism work faster is something that will allow you to constantly burn fat! So confusing
@guibox3
@guibox3 4 года назад
Goglia's premise from what I understand, is that most people cannot determine what their body will use calorically speaking in a day and are eating too little. Most people think 'eat less and eat more' is what you need to do to lose weight but this couldn't further from the truth. This is the lie that the fitness industry has been touting for the last 40 years. Where has that gotten society? Fatter and sicker and frustrated with weight loss and gain. Lowering your calories AND exercising is why we have so many fat people and yo-yo dieters with tanked metabolisms. I Most people aren't eating ENOUGH and that is why they are stalling. I can attest to this actually. When I started a ketogenic diet, I UPPED my calories about 400 past what was recommended. I was also eating about 210 g of fat a day and never exercised once. I lost 18lbs my first month and then another 32lbs over the next 4 months.nsulin plays a far greater role than calories and I disagree with Layne (as do many nutritionists and doctors do) in the role of carbohydrates and insulin over calories for weight loss and weight gain. I am living proof of that as over the past 20 years I have experienced it all and tried it all to no avail. Until I adopted a low carb/high fat way of eating. My weight has fluctuated up and down only 4-5 lbs and most recently I went carnivore as a two month experiment and lost another 8 lbs.

Layne, the one thing that I can’t seem to find an answer to is for people who are insulin resistant like my wife. She has PCOS and is at high risk of diabetes due to insulin resistance. Would this change anything? My understanding is that she should eat a low carb/low sugar diet for this reason. I agree with everything you said 100% for the average person. Thoughts?
@smallik81
@smallik81 4 года назад
I've posted a separate comment on this on this video, but ultimately if you are metabolically healthy, i.e. not insulin resistant (most recent approximations suggest 1 in 8 of all adults in developed nations are probably insulin resistant to some degree), then calories in calories out works pretty well. Outside of this healthy state however, it breaks down. Your wife should focus on 1) quantifying insulin resistance - easiest is to get a HOMA-IR rest 2) reduce insulin resistance (5 evidence based methods which are effective to varying degrees). Its incredible just how quickly you can reverse conditions like PCOS once you get on the right track! Good luck!
@tomerwolberg37
@tomerwolberg37 4 года назад
Calories in calories out still work. However, you should still ask her doctor if there might be other problems for her with eating high sugar diet due to her condition. Calories in calories out by definition talks about the amount of energy you put in vs out, so if she's in a calorie deficit by definition she would have less energy in her body than before so she would lose weight.

There are hypothesis that when you are on surplus and have minimum fat (like 30-40g per day) you wont get as much fat as on balanced diet (20-35% fat in diet) ofc with same calories and protein intake. Layne is there any truth or its total BS?
@tomerwolberg37
@tomerwolberg37 4 года назад
If you're at a calorie surplus BY DEFINITION you have more calories in your body than before, and if it's the same amount of calories of course you'll gain the same amount of weight. It doesn't matter if it's all from protein carbs or fats. The only small exception is that if you're eating a higher protein diet and have the SAME calorie surplus you might even gain more weight than lower protein since you might build more muscle which has less calories for the same amount of weight than fat, but that's really negligible and not important.

you have 1 mea1 to choose from ...500 calories and you reach baseline. Nutella on white bread = 500 calories vs Chicken , rice, veggies = 500 calories ....keep in mind the chicken meal will put you in range for 1 gram per lb of bodyweight for protein. You need to choose between these last meals for 30 days. You're telling me a fitness lifter who's natural see's no difference if for the next 30 days he chooses Nutella sandwich?
@janehoe.
@janehoe. 4 года назад
I think in terms of nutrition quality (satiety, protein quality, nutrient density, etc) it's different but purely in terms of weight gain or loss they are the same. But also you'd feel gross eating a piece of white bread (maybe 100 calories) and like 4 tbsp of Nutella that would just taste gross after 3 bites and I'd rather have had the chicken so why not just pick the chicken first?
@joebloggs6922
@joebloggs6922 4 года назад
He's only talking about pure weight loss and weight gain. There is obviously a difference in nutrition quality but ultimately there will be no difference in weight loss/gain when the calories are the same regardless of how those calories are made up. Obviously you'd choose the chicken because of the protein but that's not relevant to the discussion being had in the video.

I love all your work but I think that a study or a statistic you referred to a lot is kind of misleading.... You talked about since the year 2000 sugar consumption has gone down in America while obesity has stayed the same but that's because sugar is an added to anything anymore it's high fructose corn syrup. Now I know they act relatively the same in the body, but if the study is referring to just sugar and not calculating the amount of high fructose corn syrup that is taking the place of sugar it's very misleading.

High carb low fat is bad, low carb high fat is bad, you need to have consistent macros so your body adapts, you need to have variable macros so your body has metabolic flexibility...............

Why quarantine weight gain is inevitable
@janehoe.
@janehoe. 4 года назад
I'm okay with not losing 80 pounds during quarantine. And I'm not gonna make excuses about it. But I'm also going to attempt to not gain any weight, which requires a combo of calorie counting, meal times, and exercise (aka forcing myself to start to stupid stupid zombies run 5k trainer and run from the stupid zombs) once a week or more.

Can you do a video on pomegranate juice and a study where it raised salivary testosterone by 24%? Someone sent it to me saying it boosts testosterone assuming it'll act as some kind of "natural test booster". Thanks, Layne!

It probably does but a temporary spike like that will no have long-term effects. Your test fluctuates about that much throughout the day naturally.

Question... Over the last 4 years, I have determined that despite generally being around 78kg, (height - 5 foot 11), I require around 4,500cal to gain any weight, and I require over 5000cal once I get into the 80kg range (at the age of 19 I weighed 59kg before beginning my study, and I tracked my cals obsessively for over 3 years as my weight slowly increased). Although I have never used mass gainer, I do consume a large amount of liquid calories (often around 2500cal per day), through multiple shakes with milk (350ml), milk powder (50g-75g), eggs (3-4), oil (1-4 TBSP), chocolate nesquick, glucose powder. I am just wondering whether liquid calories can partially avoid absorption; hence I can consume around 4000cal and gain 0 weight and sometimes even lose weight... Or whether such shakes with raw eggs and oil have a really high TEF... Maybe processed foods/cheat meals also have a high TEF, hence these don't work well for weight gain? I know I have a really high metabolism as it runs in my family (my brother is 28yr old - 5 foot 10 - weighs 58kgs). However, whenever I tell a nutritionist how many calories I eat, they are often shocked and generally dont believe me; which drives me insane! Any ideas/advice would be massively appreciated, as I have been struggling with this high metabolism since I started training, and its very difficult for me to maintain such high caloric demands each and every day :( (Note: I normally consume around 200g protein, 400-500g carbs, and the rest of my cals from fat) Thanks!!!

The "laws of thermodynamics" were created and refer to a much simpler system (steam engines). Seems like a drastic oversimplification to apply them outside of the mechanical engineering they refer to.

the laws of thermodynamics apply to everything lol. You think your body, which is made of the same matter and exists in the same universe as a steam engine, somehow follows a different physics?

Wrong, citation please? According to the USDA 1970-2014 Trends In Food Availability, corn sweetener was also included in their criteria for "added sugars and sweeteners", which has gradually decreased since 1999 (p. 33). Added fats and oil consumption has skyrocketed since that year (pp. 29-30). Bottom line, it is a problem with overall unhealthy lifestyle factors, particularly excess calories, not just fat or sugar (more so added fat than sugar/sweeteners). Sugar free doesn't mean calories free lol. Read the fucking label and you'll see where the calories are coming from. If sugar is cut out of a product it's usually replaced by fat and vice versa.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Do what works for you. Just make sure you get enough protein, and more importantly... make sure you have an accurate idea of how many calories you're consuming/expending. As long as you cover both of those bases, you should be fine.
