They pay for the hours we assist with them in the operation, but the camels are theirs to take, we want to see an industry created from the camel, not just waste, which is what the government sponsored shoots do.

@@jack_out_the_backGood luck with that. Makes sense. In another life culling tahr, when numbers in close areas (< 20 minutes ferry) were sufficient, got a carcass market (export game meat once processed) and a couple of operators did recovery instead of me doing search & destroy. In the sensitive areas did SAD and recovered& sold the recoverable ones (some get wasted due to gravity or difficult pickup, the angle of the country is a bit different). Ended up not costing the taxpayer. Different superiors then made it difficult, then prevented it (health & safety officials would gibber a bit). And peers obstructed it also because they were aerial shooting addicts (skidbiters). Numbers are now way above a healthy ecosystem, denied by rec khunters, and costing taxpayers or staff to skidbite and scare tahr. With the camels etc distance logistics seem one issue. Muster the cattle then turn off the bores except the one by the chiller?

@@peetsnort SA bowels aren't an area of expertise (or attraction). Some tahr meat recovered to eat was quality, some (including young ones) was quite unpleasant tasting. Suspect it was what they were feeding on. Most had surprisingly tender quality meat, just the flavour of some (fom high popilation sites) was bad. However I don't bother with most older males of any animals for meat, except possibly venison & pork for mince &'sausages.

Why limit to pet food? ...and why did the bags at the end say not fit for human consumption if 100%? Years back Coles had camel burger patties in 1 store only and I quite liked them...guess it didn't take off, haven't seen them since...pitty. That's a lot of free meat to a smart business. (yes you have butcher, transport fees, but you do for cattle sheep as well, just don't have to pay for the actual livestock)
@jack_out_the_back
@jack_out_the_back 4 месяца назад
The reason it stated that on the packaging is because the regulations around meat for human consumption are different to those for pet food. Much more restrictive and a heck of a lot more hoops to jump through! The demand for camel meat isn’t there! Otherwise it would be a very smart business to be in. 👍🏻

It's good that the meat is being utilised, You should look into saving the hides to a tannery. You wouldn't need to keep them cool if you pickled the hides straight away. I wonder if you can sell the burnt bones to a fertilizer company would just be organic fertiliser, calcium phosphate should be easy enough to store it after its burned. before suggesting this as dog meat, I would suggest you have a look at indospicine toxicity from indigofera plant, which they feed on. Indospicine is a cumulative toxin, and dogs are extremely sensitive to it, same reason horse meat is not used for dog food. There are a few, studies into camel meat, that show the toxicity levels. Unfortunately, This is not suitable meat for dogs.
@jack_out_the_back
@jack_out_the_back 10 месяцев назад
And that is where I will kindly correct you, The meat harvested from Prenti downs has been tested and is certified clear of any indopicine toxicity. Also as the idigofera plant is not found in the region it is considered extremely low risk, however the tests were done and confirmed the toxin free status.
@ipodaholic09
@ipodaholic09 10 месяцев назад
well if you are going to test every animal harvested, and only use 100% toxin free, then great. As you are no doubt on top of the issue and the cumulative effect of the toxin. I would find it a miracle that you don't have any of the various species of indigofera Linnaei on Prenti, as that region sits in a distribution map for indigofera linnaei According to the NT government as at 2022. If so then well done and a great use for the camels! I hope they consistently test toxin free and it stays sustainable for you.
@sabrinasavill6243

Not everyone who watches this video will get camel meat from Prenti Downs, its is very dangerous to suggest this as Indospicine is so closely linked to this type of meat. My boyfriend watched your video and thought it was alright to feed northern territory camel meat to our dog and our dog ended up getting violently sick. You are putting a lot of dogs at risk publishing this content as many do not know and can only know by going through what we have with a newborn pup.

@@sabrinasavill6243There are national and NT warnings that alert people not to use camel meat that may be exposed to Indigofera, I.e. those that graze in the regions where the shrub is prevalent. Much like fish exposed to ciguatera, the responsibility lies with the harvester to inform themselves and take appropriate action. We don't say 'don't take any wild-caught fish' just because some are unsafe. Saying all camel is dangerous denies an industry that is tested and certified, and the income generated by hard working people, like these. My dogs get sick on too much roo, just because they're not used to it, so there can be various reasons why your dogs became ill. Fair go to these people, don't you think?

@johnmead8437
@johnmead8437 10 месяцев назад
@@shermrock345 Taking wild animals for sale of their food products will have food safety regulations to comply with (possibly pet food too). Being chilled quickly etc will be defined as will no take from areas being actively poisoned if a risk exists. Compliance costs suppliers, but reduces the chances of food poisoning etc, and sadly many hunters don't handle meat very hygienically. Historically in NZ some wild animals were able to be supplied to processing works, but the quality assurance requirements and international market fluctuations have seriously restricted this (suppliers need QA certification when markets exist). The need was due to some hunters lack of integrity. Not an issue for personal consumption, you are not regulated to prevent making yourself & friends etc ill.
