Between Sabbath and Purple, it would depend on my mood that day. They are contemporaries, but different styles completely.

it's always been Purple for me. Sabbath is right up there, but Purple changed my life and spoke to me like no other band. Early in the 80s when Dio was upfront of Sabbath they may have edged Purple out for a month or so. it doesn't matter much. They're both great bands and their impact on my life has been significant

Pete, your content is gold, my friend! Story for you: 1973...I was 10 years old and it was "show and tell day" in my 5th grade class. Kid named Johnny Garcia brings a protable record player to class and a 45 record for his presentation. He drops the needle on the 45 and the riff of Smoke on the Water blasts from the cheap speakers. I was hooked to the hypnotic, repeating riff. While my magic trick won the day with my classmates, it was Johnny's 45 record that had my attention. I asked him after class what the name of the song was and he said it's "Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple". Begged my parents to buy me the album and a few weeks later, a copy of Machine Head became the first LP record album that I owned. DP will always have some sentimental value for me. I've always ranked DP slightly ahead of Sabbath. Both bands have incredibly solid 70' catalogs. I actually rank Sabbath as a more consistent album catalog from 70-84 (like you, Vol 4 is my favorite) but there are three DP albums that l rank above my favorite Sabbath album: In Rock, Machine Head and Live in Japan. Speaking of live albums, it's no contest between these two bands as to who has the better live material. Love Sabbath; however, DP is still the winner in this throwdown.

Thanx alot from Norway! Reminds Me of My own r&r story allthough My journey started with Kiss & the album r&r over in 1976. Both DP & BS are legends & pioneers of their craft. Enjoyed both bands live several times My first DP show 1985(Perfect Strangers) & first BS show 1989 (Headless Cross)… My favoritte DP albums: Machine Head & Made In Japan. BS: Sabotage & Heaven & Hell. If i have to choose between these 2 giants i have to go with Deep Purple. Reason: 1. DP have the keybord!! R.I.P JON LORD 2. DP have more flavours & colours to their music. 3. DP has the interplay between the guitar & keybord. (Blackmore & Lord) 4. DP are usually faster & more energetic. 5. DP have more live albums.l

I'm only about a year older than you, but I heard DP sooner with Machine Head and they blew me away. After a couple decades of me exploring many other bands, it was really when Steve Morse joined that they came back to the top tier for me. The line up with him just seems to be having fun, and every album with him has some great stuff. He will be missed in the next one...

Pete, I want to thank you for almost single handedly getting me into Black Sabbath. I say "almost" because in college, in the late 90s, when all I had was the "We Sold Our Souls..." compilation, I was not a huge metal fan. More of a classic rock guy. I loved Floyd, BOC, Zeppelin... but my overall impression of Sabbath was they were kind of a one-trick pony. I couldn't have been more wrong! It wasn't until I explored the albums that I realized there is a lot more to Black Sabbath than meets the eye. (It's been a long, long time since I craved hearing a full album from start to finish, but lately that album has been "Sabotage.") Anyway, I wouldn't have looked into them more if it weren't for this channel. Been watching you for a couple years now, and always love to hear what you got to say (loved the XTC show, btw) and now I'm very excited to check out Deep Purple. You've mentioned them before, but watching this today really peaked my interest. I remember "Hush" and "Smoke On the Water" from some compilations in my parent's cassette collection. Had no idea until now that they had such a long and full career. I've always been more of a pop and punk guy (The Kinks, XTC, The Police, The Fall) but in recent years I picked up guitar and began taking more of an interest in guitar legends. Just watched a cool Buck Dharma interview and a Tony Iommi one recently. Been eating this stuff up everyday for the last couple months. I already added Deep Purple to my Spotify list as I was listening to your new video. Thanks again. Keep up the great content!

Really great episode Pete! It made me consider my own 'battle of the bands' between Pink Floyd and Tool. Since 2001 its spun back and forward in not dissimilar ways as you've just described. With Floyd I can keep going back and they've been releasing live archival albums as time goes on, I know it's far from their best but being able to buy Endless River upon it's release, an actual new Pink Floyd album at the time was a massive deal for me. Then after a 13 year wait for a new Tool record my whole world becomes Tool coloured once again and I go see them as much as possible on the tours. The pendulum swinging is a great analogy, merry christmas.

We love both bands truly. However, we had preferred Deep Purple in the early days. Gillan/Blackmore or the Glenn Hughes/David Coverdale-just amazing! These days, it’s Black Sabbath. We really learned to appreciate all of their catalog, especially with Ronnie James Dio. We were overjoyed when Rhino Records remastered and released “Heaven & Hell,””Mov Rules” and “Dehumanizer” on vinyl. We really hope Rhino will release “Live Evil.” Thoughts? Do you see that happening? Merry Christmas Pete!-Chris & Beth🎧🎄🎁

Always been Purple over Sabbath for me but this video made me smile a lot. All the chopping and changing of members between bands was hard to keep up with over here but must have been even harder over there in pre internet days. We used to joke that Blackmore, Coverdale and Gary Moore would meet up in secret every 6 months and throw all the band members names in a hat and draw them out to see who would be in what band that year. Crazy to think that Rainbow never recorded a studio album with the same line up as the one before.

We are the same age ( Born in July 1966 )and went through identical feelings.I discovered Sabbath around 1983. I was confused because i had just listened to my first Sabbath Album master of reality which i loved. Then i learned the lead singer left years ago and his Ozzy Osbourne.I really get into Dio aftre i got heaven and Helll and Mob rules, then i hear he also just left !! I had listened to In rock and machine head plus the Purple best of. Then i hear Gillan is joining Sabbath i was absolute;y thrilled. To this day my favourite Sabbath albums are Master of Reality and Born again. For purple my favorites also happen to be the first one i bought. In Rock and Machine head. But in the end, the darkness and heavy riffs does it for me.1- Black Sabbath 2-Deep Purple 3-Led Zeppelin 4-The Beatles 5-The Rolling Stones & Pink Floyd tied.

Deep Purple got me into rock at the age of 17 at the end of 2022. So currently I'm only starting to explore this magnificent field of music, but I've already heard every DP studio album from 1968 to Now What and that was the best music experience in my life. I'm not sure any other band will replace DP as my favourite band in the future, but who knows. Nevertheless, currently I'm exploring Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen and they all are fantastic.

My path to these bands was totally different. My introduction to Mr Blackmore was Rainbow's Down To Earth, and my discovery went backwards from there. Of course, I bought Rising next, not knowing who Ronnie Dio was at this point and thinking, Hmm, his voice sounds different on this one... Doh! But then, natch, it was the rest of the Rainbow back catalogue, before I wondered, what's this Dio guy doing now... oh, Sabbath, OK... so into the Sabbath kingdom I went, but of course, I was also exploring Blackmore's history, as well as the other Purple offshoot bands - Gillan, Whitesnake and, of course, Rainbow... oh, but now they have Joe Lynn Turner on board... God it was fun! Interesting listening to you as ever Pete, thanks for another fantastic year of SoT. Merry Christmas to you, and here's looking forward to more of the same in 2023.

I have a similar situation currently with Iron Maiden and Deep Purple. Iron Maiden is more consistent, where I can listen to pretty much any one of their albums and enjoy it, whereas Deep Purple has higher highs with Machine Head and In Rock, but some of their stuff I just couldn't get into, I also have no idea where the band is now, i don't know their latest album or anything. I love the Gillan and Coverdale eras, but everything else is irrelevant to me but Iron Maiden has songs from 1980-Present Day where I can listen to and enjoy. I still can't choose between the two, so if anyone could give their opinion on this I would love to hear it. Thanks again for the amazing video, Pete. I'll give you a sub

I can relate. I love both bands but, I have a longer history with Deep Purple because my dad was a fan of theirs so I was introduced to Deep Purple at quite an early age in the mid to late 70s. In the late 70s I became a Kiss fan and that led down the road to being a Metalhead kid in the 80s. Once you’re there it’s nearly impossible to not get introduced to Black Sabbath and I immediately loved them but, this was also around the time Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were getting big and Metallica was starting to come into the picture. The NWOBH and Bay Area and NY Thrash scenes more or less dominated my attention until Death Metal came along and Sabbath and Purple were not given the proper attention they deserved from me. It wasn’t until the bleak nearly Metal free 90s that I went back and re familiarized myself with all the old greats and that’s when my deep love for both bands was forever cemented. I think if I had to chose one band over another I might choose Deep Purple because as I mentioned I have a longer personal listening history with them and in all honesty, I was really turned off with the drama with Ozzy not allowing the third reunion with Ronnie James Dio to use the Black Sabbath name. I love Ozzy as a musician but, I thought that trick he and Sharon pulled making the band rename themselves Heaven and Hell for that last incarnation was as sleazy as it gets. It’s left such a terrible taste in my mouth that I have a hard time listening to Ozzy era Black Sabbath. Truth be known, I’ve always preferred the RJD and Tony Martin eras of the band but, I still revered the Ozzy stuff… until 2007. To be clear I still listen to Ozzy era Sabbath, it just tends to bore me at times.

Love this conversation Pete!!! One pattern I've witnessed over the years with most powerhouse bands, in their earlier "hungry" years, this usually yields the most creative and passion driven pieces. When most get rich and fat.. they get lazy. Maybe one or two gems on a new record. In the history of music, aside from ACDC, look at the first 3 to 4 albums of these great bands.. and most of the rest fall short. SIDE NOTE: For me, the Black Sabbath DIO years are the stand out albums. And no disrespect to John Osborne...

I have a bit of a theory that the (somewhat artificial) distinctions that have been made between 'metal' and 'hard rock' has had the impact of creating a new history to some extent - a populist music history at least. That change is the idea that Sabbath - Priest - Maiden - Metallica is the exclusive/ main historical lineage of 'metal'. That story has become increasingly prevalent, and means that Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and loads of others are cut out, or downplayed, as really major influences on the creation of metal. In the late 80s I can remember that people - and also magazines and radio - pointed me to the bands that were seen as influencing the likes of Maiden, Queensryche and Metallica, who I was listening to for the first time - and Sabbath certainly wasn't the only one, or necessarily the first band pointed to. Though correctly they are a big influence.

Somewhat tangential, but sometimes I like to consider the question "who was the hard/heavy rock riff master of the 70's- Page, Iommi or Blackmore?" Let's start with Page. Led Zeppelin I and II are exceptional. While Led Zeppelin III is tremendous with many songs I love, there are a number of tracks that are not, per se, riffy. Led Zeppelin IV is tremendous. Houses of the Holy is great. Physical Graffiti is tremendous. Presence and In Through the Out Door are okay with a few songs I like. Counting Physical Graffiti as 2, that's 6 exceptional/tremendous studio albums and 1 that is great. Continuing with Iommi. The first, eponymous album is exceptional. Paranoid is exceptional. Master of Reality is exceptional. Vol 4. is exceptional. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is exceptional. Sabotage is exceptional. Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die! are pretty good. So that's 6 exceptional studio albums and 2 that are pretty good. Now, Blackmore. Deep Purple in Rock is exceptional. Fireball is exceptional. Machine Head is exceptional. Who Do We Think We Are is great. Burn is exceptional. Stormbringer is great. Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is exceptional. Rainbow Rising is exceptional. Long Live Rock 'n' Roll is exceptional. Down to Earth is great. So that's 7 exceptional studio albums and 3 that are great. 70's hard rock riff winner: Blackmore. I think people often don't think of it this way because they think of the bands as the entities for ranking, not realizing that Rainbow is basically where Blackmore wanted to take Deep Purple but couldn't make it work with the personnel of Mark III and so had to start a new band.

Both great bands, but gotta go Deep Purple by a slight edge! Was never a huge fan of Dio in Sabbath, have the albums, seen Sabbath with Dio a few times, but Ozzy Sabbath beats anything Dio did with them. Love the Born Agin album and the tour was great! I'm just over 60 years old and started with the Beatles, but my first 3 rock albums were DP's In Rock, Killer by Alice Cooper, and Paranoid by Sabbath! Made In Japan by far 'the' greatest live ever! Purple all the way for me!!

If you’d asked me 35 years ago to choose between the two bands, I’d have gone for Deep Purple hands down. For some inexplicable reason, I never really listened to Black Sabbath as a teenager, although I did hear ‘Mob Rules’ which I enjoyed a lot. Now I feel very differently. Aside from ‘In Rock’, I find the Mk II and Mk III albums pretty patchy and the lyrics are not exactly Shakespeare. I still love their more commercial tunes like ‘Strange Kind of Woman’ and ‘Woman from Tokyo’; ‘Burn’ for me is the highlight of their whole career. In recent years the Ozzy era Sabbath albums have become firm favourites of mine. Lyrically I think Geezer Butler was way more interesting than Robert Plant or Ian Gillan and there was so much subtlety on those first few albums aside from the heavy nature of much of the music. So now it’s the Ozzy Sabbath that wins hands down (although the Dio albums are great too).

Sabbath is my favorite band, no one really comes close. I'm a really picky guy and most bands for me only have 1, 2 or 3 albums I love but Sabbath has 12. King Crimson is in 2nd place with 9 albums. Deep Purple falls into that 1 album category, I dig In Rock but don't really care for anything else by them.

Not even a contest for me, Deep Purple all the way. I can admire the quality of Sabbath's work, but they never made the visceral impact on me Purple did, even when Dio was in the band.

Flip a coin. Heads it's Purple, tails it's Purple. Seriously, I like them both but Purple gets the nod here. Though as far as seeing them live, it was BS first for me, on the '75 Sabotage tour. First real big name show I'd been to and my ears rang for two days. Did manage to see Purple live in '87 and was kind of underwhelmed - maybe I was expecting to see the band as they were on Made In Japan? Wasn't going to happen. Though with Deep Purple, the live versions are almost always better.

For most of my life I was a casual fan of both bands. In the last decade both have risen dramatically in my pantheon of rock gods. The original Ozzy run is my go to Sabbath by far. The Dio period is ok, but not really my bag. I never go into the post Dio stuff at all. For Purple the Mk 2 lineup is by far the best. The Coverdale Hughes lineup is ok, but not nearly as interesting to me. I do like the Steve Morse incarnation of Purple and they have been putting out some fine albums. It's unfortunate that Morse had to retire from the band. Bottom line for me is that Deep Purple wins by a country mile. In my opinion they have much more musicianship and Ian Gillan is a better singer than anyone ever to sing for Sabbath except Ian Gillan.

My favorite band has been relatively rock solid for awhile and it hasn't changed yet. But thrash, my favorite genre, has a couple bands where every now and then the second place band competes well against it and has some of it's own advantages: Demolition Hammer and Razor. The former is an all-out brutal assault of straight-up pure thrash with vicious vocals, and the latter is a very riffy speed/thrash band with extravagant soloing and crazy ass vocals (mainly Sheepdog but both are good). The soloing on a lot of Razors albums is better than what D.H. had on their albums but the sheer brutality and intensity of what D.H. came up with does it for me, plus the discography is smaller so their quality was there throughout and stronger top-to-bottom. With Razor, they have a couple of weak albums but the gold is absolute top-tier. And both didn't succumb to the 90s trends (Time Bomb was/is technically not supposed to be a D.H. album).

Purple for me, about their diverse Catalogue from 60s music, concerto for group and orchestra, In Rock with Child in Time up to their best selling ones, Machine Head and Made in Japan and about their unique musicianship of Blackmore, Lord and Paice which they showed at their concerts. Purple always was a live Band.

Thanks for this show Pete! Growing up, through mum and dad, I listened to DP songs like "Black Night," "Highway Star," "Never Before," and "Woman from Tokyo." I wasn't really introduced to any BS material. In more recent years, I've listened to four BS albums: the debut, "Paranoid," "Vol. 4," and "Heaven and Hell." I liked what I heard but the one song that caught my ear and I really like is "Laguana Sunrise." Quite a contrarian choice I know 😂. Also in more recent years, I've listened to eight DP albums: "In Rock," "Fireball," "Machine Head," "Made in Japan," "Who Do We Think We Are," "Burn," "Perfect Strangers," and "Whoosh!" As a result of listening to those albums, I now really like "Burn," "Knocking at Your Back Door," "No One Came," "Rat Bat Blue," and "Space Truckin'." To my ears, DP is more superior than BS in terms of musicianship. While I can appreciate and understand others loving the slow and doomy nature of the music of BS, I much prefer the energetic and proficient nature of the music of DP. Also, between Gillan and Osbourne, I like Gillan better as a vocalist. So even though I definitely don't dislike BS, I am team Purple without a doubt!
