Saving money in the long run. Spending money on tents can be very expensive and sometimes we don't need to buy the full tent just a flysheet replacement.
Fancy looking at more 3f-ul-taiji-2-tent
www.camperlist
Or think about it this way if you like the tent your have but fancy a different flysheet colour to use in different seasons could be possible wouldn't that be great ?
Well what if tent Companies did this make different colours flysheet so we can pick and choose as we please...

Which is why I think that they'd be keen on the idea. Sell the inner, 6 pegs and poles as a standalone option at 70% of the complete options price, then sell skins and 10 pegs for say 40-50%. You could buy a complete tent as a starter then add autumn/winter/custom skins as desired. When your inner finally dies you can just replace that instead of buying a whole new tent. I'm surprised that they haven't done it already too.

it's a really good idea Dan, and hopefully tent manufacturers will get on board , it's only like selling accessories like poles and pegs, the company I work for that sells lights to schools , hospitals and factories they are now doing retro refits where you use the existing light fitting but we just swap out the light bulb for led , it's been a massive success and people have really bought into , saves them buying a whole new light and it has gave us more buisness

Strongly agree. I've had fly sheets expire from UV exposure prematurely from major manufacturers (Vango). Back in the day (1990's) I ripped the fly sheet on a Phoenix Mountaineering tent. Some tent manufacturers do offer this. I bought the Durston X-Mid 2p and broke a strap on the 4 season inner. I looked on the website and they offer a spare parts service so I bought a new 4 season inner. I'm also going to buy a 3 season inner for next summer. It's a no brainer though to me, Durston are getting an extra 100 quid off me that I wouldn't have spent otherwise.

Hi Dan Some of the best ideas come from campers who have been there and done it. You say that the company sent you a fly sheet in your requested colour. …….I would bounce the idea off them and the reasons why you came up with this idea. It would open up a further market for them and any other tent maker. They could easily make any colour like white for snow landscapes…….autumn colours …….etc. Companies rely on demand but hey Oak trees grow from little acorns ……I think your Idea would stir up a lot of interest among the camping world. Good luck with this Dan….It is worth a try.

One of the reasons I ALWAYS go with exosceleton tents are, that I always cary a lightweigt camo netting, that I wrap the tent in. In that way, its easy to adjust it to the surroundings. And it gives added shade in sunlight, by just lifting it a bit higher of the tent, and added warmth when brought closer to the tent. It also help in the rain, as it takes most of the direct splashes before the water hits the tent. Besides the exosceleton demand, my tent come in dark olive, dark coyote or brown. Very easy to make them "dissapear" by just bringing the right camo netting for the environment. 3F's bright green is a no-go! The camo-netting ads a little weight, but the benefits are totally worth it.

In fairness most tent manufacturers do this already I've found, just not Chinese based companies oddly. It makes even more sense for them seeing as they self manufacture, but even finding a replacement poles for budget tents can be a pain - imagine how bomber the Taji would be if you could double pole it. And in fairness the 'mainstream' tent flys you can get on their own seem to cost almost as much as a full new tent 😬 A lot of brands have your vids on their product pages Dan, so hopefully they take notice!

In the old days you could get spare/alternative parts for pretty much everything. It's odd that in these days that we're worried about rubbish and recycling there's now so much less of that and people just throw out the whole thing. I've got the nightcat version of this tent, it's a really good size and I like it very much but it got flattened and flooded in a horizontal hailstorm the second time I used it so the poles are a bit bent now. Still works fine though.

It'll save money and its eco friendly, will stop people from throwing the whole tent away if just the fly sheet is damaged. I'd go as far to say, all the parts of the tent should be sold separately. From the manufacturers point of view I think it may be beneficial aswel. If their tent rips, the customer might just get another brand tent, with spar parts the customer will stay with that brand buying parts for their tent. The manufacturers will probably benefit from the sales of individual items from a price point of view, should I buy a whole new tent £150+ or some overpriced spare parts which will save me paying out for a new tent.. this is beneficial for the manufacturer and even though the customer is being screwed its still a plus aswel. Brilliant video, love the out of the box thinking.

Hi Dan It’s strange that you can buy replacement poles etc, so like you have, you need a replacement fly sheet due to damage as these things happen out camping so it makes sense that the tent you love can be partly replaced I understand that styles change but if they still sell that tent on line in different colours why not We can only ask Regards Jeff
@brewnhell9938

Good one Dan, I think, that the likes of 3FUL-Gear & others, would only benefit from selling separate/replacement flysheets... How many people would just repair & put up with it, until it fell apart completely, instead of paying out for a whole new tent...? I've got a 3FUL-Gear Lanshan 2 Standard, in brown, with solid T-Zip inner + footprint... This year I bought the mesh inner for it, so that I have a choice... What a cracking idea Dan but let's take it a step further, you said your tent is 4 season so you got the cloth/ mesh inner, how about if they offered a separate mesh inner? for spring /summer? make the product more inter changeable? like you have said you already brought the tent so you have the basic's already but to offer other parts so you can customise to your own preferences could be a game changer. lets just think about that! you have brought the companies product, your out in it, like you started you got the basic green fly then you see someone with coyote fly, your going to go WOW i didn't know they done that colour now, the conversation could go like this. Oh no, you can buy different parts from this company, not only do the sell the tent but you can buy different colour fly's separately, but you can also buy a mesh inner or cloth/mesh inner to make it 4 season. they offer you a great choice with there product so you can customise it yourself. question? would you be blown away? as you don't have to buy a new complete tent just to get that colour or different inner you could mix and match so to speak. What is the best PR a company can get? that doesn't cost the company anything? Word of mouth from the end user of the product. but Alas in the real world like you say the tent companies won't do this! they want us to spend out on a complete new tent just to get these different parts.

copied this from someone and agree with most; 1) Warm colours on the inner. I find the white inners used by Terra Nova and Wild Country are depressing as you sit out a freezing rainstorm. Give me a cheerful Hilleberg yellow every time. 2) Progressive pegging. In good weather, get a good pitch with half a dozen pegs or less - 3 minutes max. When Armageddon looms, enough effective guy points to build a flap-free fortress. 3) Sheltered thru-venting that can be adjusted from inside the tent. It's amazing how many premium designs force you to venture out into the storm to close up the vents. 4) Double inner doors like the old WinterGear Sapphire.. Mesh only for hot weather, with the option to zip up a solid panel to at least deflect the draught above your sleeping bag. 5) Doors that can be left open in all but the worst weather. The old Sanders A-frames with the 3 panel vestibules are the standard here. You can cook with the central panel open with shelter from both sides, with the steam escaping upwards. And unless the wind swings 180 and blows in horizontally you can leave it open all night for superb venting. And of course doors with a fall line that drips on the inner are a deal-breaker. And the fly doors should have straight zips - far too many failures with curved zips, even on Hillies. 6) Integrated outer-first pitching - something the Americans don't seem to prioritise. but a must-have in Europe. 7) Small footprint. On steep mountain walks, finding a pitch at the end of a tiring day can be a major stressor, as you walk on into the night searching for a spot. Yes, some inner space, but the minimum necessary. Some designs give far more vestibule and floorspace than you really need if you're organised. Duplex? Stratospire? Trailstar? Plenty of examples. 8) For me - a single skin design with integrated bug protection and bathtub. Peg it out and you're done. You can wipe the walls with ease, while with double designs you often end up packing wet and soaking the inner, or separating and faffing about as you pack in the morning. Then you're grovelling around to hook up the inner again in the evening. Lots of ways to mitigate condensation in a single wall, such as the reflective panels on the legendary Stephenson Warmlite. Or simply a minimal bivy bag. But with well designed venting it's rarely an issue. With double walls, it is what it is with no flexibility. Plus with a single wall you get more space and can build it smaller. Less weight. Tighter footprint. Less fabric to flap in the wind... 9) Simplicity. The less things to break the better. Far too many intricate, fragile designs on the market. I loved the basic cotton Vango Force 10s and Blacks Mountain Tents I cut my teeth on. Utterly bomber. Pity you need a yak to carry the damn things around or I'd still be using them. 10) Robust ground sheets. I'll happily trade a few grams for a groundsheet I don't have to baby and that saves faffing around with bloody footprints.

I would imagine that the cost of the fly alone would be almost the same as the whole tent .due to having to stock spares . And why just the fly .why not stock the poles and inner, guys and pegs too , It all becomes about storage and dealing with customers and sorting out problems .the cost of an individual item would soar . Easier just to buy a second whole tent and swap the bits about

@@englishwoodsman I guess though .if your only option was to buy a whole new tent then what's to stop you from going to a different brand .I suppose your idea of spares keeps the owner with the brand . Especially if certain parts are interchangeable between different tents .like maybe the poles and pegs and ground sheet could be swapped about . Starting to make sense Dan.
