U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan prompted China to initiate military exercises near the island, which it claims as part of its territory. And while there is no agreement explicitly committing the U.S. to defend Taiwan, it has publicly stated that it considers the island an important ideological and commercial ally. It is not known to what extent it will defend the island or whether it will directly confront China, what is certain is that China is getting closer and closer to using military force to reunify with Taiwan. Therefore, it is inevitable to think that if that comes to pass the United States will try to take some kind of measures such as imposing trade or economic sanctions on China as it did with Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. However, there are reasons to think that it will not be able to do so. There are 3 questions worth trying to answer: Why won't the U.S. be able to sanction China if it invades Taiwan? Why is the U.S. so dependent on China? And, what does the decline of U.S. industry have to do with any of this?
