Hiya! Did you enjoy our last episode? Well, get ready for ROUND TWO with the fabulous Sue Hargreaves, an ex-Slimming World consultant now embracing intuitive eating. I mean, who could get enough of Sue's wisdom, right? So, here we are, picking up where we left off last week!
I threw a bunch of your thought-provoking questions at Sue, and among them are the following:
🤔 Is Slimming World really paying attention to eating disorders?
🤔 Is it expensive to eat on plan?
🤔 What excuses did people in the Slimming World group have for not losing weight?
🤔 What's the downside of strict dieting?
🤔 How on earth do you take that first step away from dieting?
🤔 And, get this, the banana-mashing mystery- the most asked question I have had this week!
You'll have to listen to FIND OUT the answers! We didn’t stop there. We also delved into a range of topics, such as:
✨ The not-so-great stuff about Slimming World.
✨ The nature of calorie calculations
✨ Why Slimming World's way might not be the forever solution
✨ Dealing with those cravings and the 'I Can't Have It' syndrome.
✨ Hormones and the 'Oops, I slipped off the wagon' moments.
✨ The absolute importance of comprehensive nutritional education
✨ Finding a safe and supportive community that works for you and embracing a more balanced and enjoyable way of eating
I had such a lot of fun chatting with Sue once again, and seriously, you won't want to miss this!
Hop over for a fun yet insightful deep dive into Slimming World's universe and the wild world of diet culture. This chat is pure gold, I promise! 🌟

Makes good sense. Did WW for years on and off, now I just eat what I feel like and stay the same weight. I try to keep within my BMI but that's it. I love cooking and I feel a freedom now I haven't felt in years. Love your chat ❤xx

This was so interesting. I joined SW a month ago and left a few days ago after realising how dangerous the whole mindset was for ny relationship with food. I was being praised for skipping meals, shamed for eating half a teacake and encouraged to not go out for a meal with my family... or at least just take a hifi bar in my handbag. After I stopped I did a check of the calories I had been eating and it was just over 1000. No wonder i was so hungry and generally unhappy. I looked around that room on Wednesday at people who had been there YEARS and I was fed up after 4 weeks. I actually did "well" and lost 8lb in that time (and i didn't have loads to lose really) but at what cost? Thank you both for these videos. I was looking to see if anyone else came to the same conclusion I did and it is very reassuring to find this

I have a background in eating disorder research and a past history of an ED. What this video makes me realise is that the only people who can keep 100% to plan have strayed into ED territory. Also, I am in favour of harm reduction so it's clear that SW is at least better than WW in that it does let you eat a lot of certain foods. WW is just pure starvation. Also, random comment, but you both have beautiful eyes! 😂

I understand everything you have just said here. When your unhappy with your body how do you go about losing weight in a healthy and sustainable way?
@terripughcoaching
@terripughcoaching Месяц назад
I'd love to see you making friends with your body again, rather than trying to change it. There's so much about you that is already perfect. However, bodies change for lots of different reasons. When your body is forced to change through dieting that's basically starving it of energy and resources that it needs, and the change is the by-product. Maybe you could look at doing other things to take care of it and respect it instead of punishing it? Movement is a good example. You can move to make your body strong and well and ready for future strains like old age. If weight loss is a by-product of that so be it, but it shouldn't be the reason why you're doing it.

I'm really pleased that you like your consultant. We were in no way placing the blame on the consultants, at all. However there are really serious issues for health and wellbeing that are attached to weight cycling and constant dieting. Everyone has body autonomy, but I'd love for people to make educated decisions on what they choose for themselves. Keep in touch. I hope you'll subscribe and enjoy learning more about Intuitive Eating.

I think the real joke is allowing the hi Fi bars as a healthy extra. Some people use their syns for unhealthy snacks and still eat their two hi FY bars as the healthy extra, slowly manurishing themselves.
@terripughcoaching
@terripughcoaching 8 месяцев назад
You're right. Diets like this make you calculated in your eating so that you can 'make the most' of your food allowance and get the most 'treats' in. Such a shame, because if you allow yourself to eat intuitively you'd just have a nice balance of everything you need.

I started my first diet at aged 18 and I'm now 52. I'm nearly the biggest I have ever been. I went back to SW and can't stand in the que waiting to be weighed and sit in the group anymore. I paid for a count down but I can't mentally do this anymore. The effects on my MH is no longer worth it. All I want to be is me not compare to others who lose more etc, who's families are better etc.

Red and Green worked, it came off not like extra easy lose a pound gain a pound,that’s why they got rid it as people got to their targets, and left, with extra easy you don’t lose or if you do slower more money for them. Maybe a video on the old style.
@terripughcoaching
@terripughcoaching 7 месяцев назад
Oh interesting! Have you noticed that red and green were based on restriction? You can't eat certain foods on certain days. Not at all healthy, or good for anyone's relationship with food.
@andreaneilson6037
@andreaneilson6037 5 месяцев назад
red days were low carb/high protein, Green days were vegetarian based with limited meats. You'd get 2 healthy extras a day too. On a red day you'd use healthy extras on carbs, potatoes etc. On Green days your healthy extras could be used on meats etc. I personally think those rules worked better, but I am deffo no fan of Slimming World. It just makes food unnecessarily complicated and gives you guilt. A lot of their ideas are extremely similar to the archaic "food combining" diets. Very unsuitable for modern life. I also absolutely remember "syns" being called SINS! though sw doesn't like to admit this!
@terripughcoaching
@terripughcoaching 5 месяцев назад
@@andreaneilson6037 yes, absolutely. Those red and green days meant that you were 'allowed' certain foods on certain days, and if you wanted the foods that were off plan for that day you had to syn them. Like you say, that is no way to live with food.

Not everyone has been yo-yo dieting for years. Not everyone suffers from an eating disorder. What if you've always ate intuitively and were fine for years but as you get older weight has crept up with having babies and not having time for excercise. What if you just have some bad habits with crisps and sweets (but not binging). Surely a healthy eating plan is a good idea. I am dieting mainly for health. One issue I have is that huge losses are encouraged but this is usually achieved by over-restricting. A moderate restriction is not unhealthy if coupled with excercise.
@terripughcoaching
@terripughcoaching 7 месяцев назад
There are a couple of points in your comment that interest me. You mention having bad habits with crisps and sweets. A 'bad habit' around food is usually because you're not in tune and eating intuitively. It's a behaviour. But in those moments asking what you want and need may help to break those habits. Also, health is the result of behaviours, not food. When you say you diet for health, what you're saying is you don't have the focus on the intuitive eating, and so your balance of foods is out. When you eat intuitively your body naturally regulates the nutrient intakes, and therefore providing the best for your body at any time. I will never be an advocate for any restriction, especially if it is dependant on exercise. Exercise is of course excellent if you do it with the intention of feeling good physically and mentally, and making your body strong and fit. If it is linked to food though the focus is wrong. One is not linked to the other. I agree that huge losses come from over restricting, and that's where these plans are no good.

I've often asked about mashing a baba a. It makes no sense it's classed as free if eaten whole but if its mashed or liquidised it has to be counted. How ridiculous. You don't have to count carrots if you liquidise them in a soup.... Or sprouts... Or cabbage.... Sweet potato.... Yes no one swallow a banana wholesale.... Of course it's bitten and chewed before being swallowed... So what's the difference between chewing and mashing?

I don't focus on that. There's no such thing as a healthy weight. I eat a really good range of foods, I pay attention to what my body needs and how it responds to food, and I have enough movement and self care in my life. Weight does not equal health.
