You don't have a worker shortage. You have a worker pay shortage. People cannot stay in jobs that don't pay a living wage. As well, the NBC report failed to mention how poor government planning to build sufficient housing has caused inflated and unaffordable housing prices and rents. There is no justication for houses to be $2M+, who can afford this? Even someone whos is a doctor or dentist cannot. Unlike the USA its not that easy to go to another state where the cost of living is reasonable and affordable for the middle class and blue collar working class.

The problem with home prices comes from speculation. People, mostly foreign investors, buy property only to sell it at a profit to another speculating investor. There needs to be massive taxes on such transactions to make them unprofitable. And then there's also the problem of short term locations (Airbnb) in some areas, and also the fact that everyone move to the same cities. For example, if you move to a region of Canada other than the Toronto Area, Montréal and British Columbia, you can still find affordable homes and a good job.
@user-tb3es9yd5z
@user-tb3es9yd5z Год назад
@@PG-3462 foreign investors aren't the problem only like 2% of homes are owned by foreign investors in Canada. Idk why houses are so expensive but it's definitely not because of foreign investors I think the issues lies with the government unwillingness to do anything about it
@PG-3462
@PG-3462 Год назад
@@user-tb3es9yd5z Here you just have a problem understanding the statistics you stated. That 2% of homes owned by foreign investors is calculated using the total number of homes in ALL of Canada. Meanwhile, home prices are only insanely high in the Toronto area, in British Columbia and now that the market is saturated in these two areas, foreign investors start coming to Montréal. However, if you go to Québec city, to Edmonton, to Halifax or wathever city you can think of, home prices are still much cheaper than in any other developped country. Thus, while 2% of homes in Canada are owned by foreign investors, the percentage in the Toronto area and in British Columbia is much higher than that. Actually, if there was no speculation, the price of homes would follow the average income. If the average home is too expensive relatively to the average wage, then no home is sold and thus home sellers will drop the price. The problem here is that there are always some foreign investors, some Airbnb "super hosts" or wathever who have enough funds to purchase some homes at an always higher price.

There is no labour shortage in Canada. There is however a shortage of people who will work for low wages. Be warned before moving to Canada, housing and taxes are extremely high, and will consume most of your income. There is very little in the way of affordable rents anywhere in Canada, let alone either Vancouver or anywhere within commuting distance to Toronto. Do your home work before immigrating and becoming disappointed.
@yohan2437
@yohan2437 Год назад
People are attracted to professions in which they earn a fair wage for the hours worked. Free enterprise dictates you maximize profits while minimizing labour and material costs. Therein lies the fundamental conflict. Countries like Canada are continually having to find new people from less affluent countries that will work harder for less in order to satisfy corporate interests that fuel economic growth. It's not that there is a shortage of workers but rather there is a lack of incentive of employers to increase pay. Without increasing pay, citizens cannot afford to buy housing and start families to increase the Canadian population and create the next generation of taxpayers and pension contributors. So essentially, corporate Canada is complaining that we don't have enough local workers to exploit. They didn't stop to think that years of underpaying local citizens caused them to leave for green pastures like the US where they are compensated much higher for the same professions. Importing foreign labour for naturalization only serves to keep wages down maintain this vicious cycle.

Please note the following: Toronto is also one of the most expensive cities to live in North America. There is a severe housing crisis. Many empty homes and buildings but they are unaffordable to the majority of Canadians. More immigration will certainly also put pressure on the demands of the housing market. Less than a decade ago, the Canadian government made sigificant policy changes that has led to the diminishing of nurses and many provincial governments continually work towards eroding public healthcare infrastructures, constantly worsening the condition of labourers and specialists in the medical field. Canada's regulatory apparatuses do not even respect or formally acknowledge much of the high class and often superior training of healthcare professionals who get trained, licensed and certified elsewhere, especially in the "Global South." This "immigration will fix it" approach seems like an infected band-aid that'll worsen the wound and comes off as a lazy, last-ditch effort to resolve the worsening healthcare crisis. - The Moorish Science Monitor ✌🏾🧿👌🏾
@MRC325
@MRC325 Год назад
The housing crisis is all self made because of the zoning laws the city has. If the city allowed for more mid rise buildings and allowed for condos to be built in areas outside of its selected zones then the housing crisis would be non existent. Rent would be cheaper, owning would be cheaper, etc. look at Tokyo, the city has more people than all of Canada and housing is more affordable there. Mainly because Tokyo doesn’t demand for single family housing. The stereotypical white picket fenced single family home isn’t efficient or sustainable.

Yes canada has major shortages in labour market, but most of them are on minimum wages or slightly higher. It’s a shame Canadian government didn’t plan ahead for all the retirement, pensions to pay back in the days and now forced to call immigrants in huge numbers expecting them to sort out the problems, but immigration in huge numbers does come with some challenges which they are struggling to cope with badly. All they see is that international students bringing billions of dollars and then surviving on minimum wages is a great success but all the immigration side effects like property prices going rocket high, rental prices shooting up, medical facilities are worse than a 3rd world countries, traffic congestion they just want to ignore!!

Furthermore, many Canadians and young people in Canada are disillusioned, frustrated, and hopeless because of the lack of jobs, income, housing, and a decent life. @leeraewi Год назад
It's not necessarily that the job is unattractive, but our nursing school are not set up to train enough nurses and doctors. It's incredibly competitive for them to get required residencies as part of their qualification process. There needs to be more coordination across various levels and areas of government to legitimately tackle the labour shortage. However, it is a lot easier to say that massive amounts of immigration will be the solution. Unfortunately, many qualified immigrants who come to Canada often discover it's not so easy, because professions like medicine are heavily regulated by provincial professional organisations who require those working in the field to meet their standards, which still unfathomably requires a local degree. While I'm personally pro-immigration, I feel that the Canadian government is currently attempting to mask low levels of growth in the economy by inviting more immigrants into the country than it can really promise reasonable opportunities, never mind basic necessities like housing, to. It does feel somewhat like a cynical money grab.

I speak to many of them who are now permanent residents (a step before becoming a citizen). But their knowledge & skills are so poor that I wonder what will happen to our businesses and institutions when they run them. They blame it on Canada for not providing good jobs. New immigration is ok. But it should be “job based”. What I mean is look at the area where there is shortage of labor. Look for skills and experience from different countries. Then bring them in. Now what’s happening looks like fraud. Government knows about it. But there is no political will to do it the right way. This is almost comical. There isn't a shortage of jobs, just a shortage of jobs that supply people with an adequate opportunity to climb up the social hierarchy. The reason why Canada relies on inmigrant labor is because most citizens wouldn't do the jobs of those who recently arrived, often from war-torn or corrupt countries. Thus, they'll accept a situation which, in their perspective, is substantially better. Even with a decent university degree basic jobs are hard to attain. Also, speaking about the growth of immigration in general, the growth of the housing market doesn't catch up with the growth of the population. Canada's system do not require immigrants to have a mandatory employment offer - like in the US, UK, Switzerland, Singapore etc. This means immigrants just need to show foreign education and foreign work experience, both of which are routinely obtained by fraud. This is the single biggest reason Canada could not attract truly meritorious, job creating immigrants for the last several decades. Source countries like India, China etc have tens of thousands of colleges and its super easy to obtain a degree certificate there.

It seems all well and good but also need to address housing. You can't bring in all of these people to large cities like Toronto and surrounding areas and be super slow to do anything to build any affordable housing. Even in Ontario the government wants developers to build 1 million new residential dwellings in the next 10 years but if you're bringing in so many people you are not making the dream of homeownership attainable with these large influxes. We'll still have a large demand/supply imbalance.

I did a research and it seems the cheapest way to immigrate is through Skilled worker program. However, you need to have experience and apply for a job that is in demand in Canada for example nurses, hotel workers, etc For people who hold a business bachelor degree it's hard. I have some female friends who work as a nurse or a hotel staff and they could bring their whole family to immigrate to Canada with them.

Unfortunately a lot new immigrants are coming in with low skills. Current system will do more harm than good. I think a “job based” immigration program is the solution. What I mean is they should look at the areas where there is shortage of labor. Then bring in immigrants with skills and experience. Crime is going up in many areas. Politicians don’t live in these areas to see the consequences of their decisions.

This may seem like a good idea, but it could be a recipe for disaster. Employers face a labour shortage, but there is also a shortage of affordable housing, and the cost of living is high even for people who are well-settled in Canada, let alone for newcomers starting from zero. Although the pandemic has exacerbated things, this was years in the making, even with immigration at about 300k per year. Increasing it to 500k per year, with all the other issues, is just crazy. There will be more poverty, more homelessness, more crime, more traffic, and it will just get harder and more depressing to live in Canada, especially during those long winters. Governments of both major parties are responsible for this situation.

Absolutely! I have nothing against increasing the numbers of immigrants to Canada from any place in the world, but people immigrate to Canada to find high paying jobs. Labour shortages are a problem in low paying jobs. Most immigrants will try to move to where there is more opportunity, as in large cities, and the increased demand for housing will make the affordability crisis worse. I think the current government's campaign make no sense at all.

@@Hilavaflow And this is the same questionable rationale that has been used in Canada and in several European countries for at least 20 years now. The way that our government- or state-run pension and retirement benefits have been structured, specifically the "pay-as-you-go" concept, is essentially just a massive Ponzi scheme that relies on younger workers to fund the retirements of older citizens. The alternative is (and was) for individuals to assume responsibility for their own retirement financing through savings, investment, and financial planning. Alternatively, the government could have set up retirement accounts that people could contribute to during their working years and could draw from during their retirement. If they save more, they can draw more, and they would not have to be dependent on their children or on younger generations.

@@EnnVee959 I agree. Clearly, governments have not thought this through, and the business community only cares about their short-term needs. "Where, oh where, will we find our hospitality workers, drivers, and labourers? Oh, I know! Let's pressure the government to allow in more immigrants! They'll be happy to be here and work without complaint! They won't try to organize themselves like our own people will, and we can bully them, exploit them, and short-change them as much as the law will allow! Heck, they're newcomers, so they probably won't even know the law, so as long as nobody reports us, we can do what we like!" It's just so short-sighted and cynical.
@EnnVee959
@EnnVee959 Год назад
@@irkhanbasc Yes exactly. I feel like behind the scenes some people had a conversation exactly like this. Although I don't have proof, it is as though some real estate investors (many of which are current political representatives at all levels of government) are happy to cause an increase in the cost of shelter, whether rent or ownership, through increasing the population density in major urban areas. Again, some newcomers to Canada might be willing to temporarily do low paying jobs at first, but eventually they will not want to. What happens when they become resentful of their low paying jobs? Anyhow, good to luck to us all.

@@EnnVee959 Also, you mentioned that many immigrants come to Canada seeking high-paying jobs, often professional positions. My own father came to Canada to advance his engineering career. But many people come to Canada as refugees or through family sponsorship, so they are not necessarily skilled. Maybe some of those people will gladly take the more menial jobs, and maybe that’s what many in government and business are thinking, but then you still have the other issues. I think that either our leaders don’t care or that they think we’ll figure things out when the time comes. Act first then think later. Sometimes that works in the short term, but that’s never a good long-term strategy.

I live in the US and my new neighbor is working nights as a nursing assistant. He is from Africa with a wife and two kids. His friend works a similar job in a nursing home for the developmentally disabled. My neighbor works the night shift. These guys work hard. American men will not do that kind of work. They would rather sit around and play with their assault rifles. The pay for contract nurses in the US is now so high that you can work on a 90 day contract and vacation for the next 6 months and the job openings never dry up.
