Why Catholicism is WRONG (REBUTTED) Part 1 

Mike Winger doesn't care about Christian history. He said so on his video on infant baptism. He said he doesn't care what Christian said 500 years after Christ died, but he refuses to see that Christians taught infant baptism hundreds of years before his reference point. I really do hope you can have a conversation with him. It is hard to listen to someone who thinks that are giving an accurate description of Catholicism when they don't.

I’m currently Protestant but I love listening to what you have to say, Trent. You give me a lot to think about.

Trent Horn has great composure, refutes in a very charitable way.

At 71 years old I have had my share of talks with Protestants. I converted to Catholicism in 1970. But I am weary with all these debates/ arguments. Some three months ago the Mormons came knocking on my door. About three times a year, the Jehovah Witnesses come knocking. My brother is in the Church of Christ and says the Catholic C is an abomination unto God, but he gets into arguments with our Pentecostal relatives. Actually it's simple: Non-Catholic denominations and Catholics are at polar opposites. We have two opposite premises (a starting belief). What is the basis of your belief in Jesus Christ? The non-C says it's a no brainer. Of course the basis is the Bible. What else can there be? The Catholic says it's the church. Only the church has the authority to interpret the Bible. The Bible is a great extension of the church. Centuries ago the non-C grasps the Bible. Holds it up and says - This is our obly authority! The Catholic C says - No, we have the rifht to interpret scripture. So, why we Catholics allow ourselves to have a debate according to non-Catholic (protestant) rules? To prove everything by the Bible. Indeed, all Catholic positions can be proven by the Bible - but often not to the satisfaction of the non-C. We Catholics researve the right ti follow the Catholuc Church's interpretation. It is our starting premise of our faith. We don't need to apologize to the non-C to the point that we get into debates using their rules. Kung Fu fighter and boxer get into the ring. It is announced these two are champions of their sport. The Kung Fu fighter is surprised to learn before the bell that he is only to fight by boxing rules. If the non- C wants to ridicule us by saying we are afraid of the Bible, fine. And if we don't have an answer duri g the debate, fine. We can direct the non-C to books and websites that are better at explaining. Debates are entertaining at best but seldom is there a clear winner, and even if so, the winner is not necessarily right.

This is fantastic. Trent Horn is one of the people that had a great influence on my turning from Protestantism to Catholicism. I was a seminary trained Protestant getting my Masters at Fuller Seminary. I got my PhD at the same school as James White attended, although I don't consider it a legitimate PhD as it is not an accredited school; but it was 2 years of hard study. But I listened to Steve Ray's conversion story and I saw many intellectual Protestants converting to Catholicism (Marcus Grodi, Dr. Francis Beckwith, John Henry Newmann, Dr. David Anders, Dr. Scott Hahn, Dr. John Bergsma etc. etc.) When I saw Trent Horn explain how Protestants claims about Catholicism are dead wrong it gave me pause. I couldn't respond to Trent's claims. And Mike Winger cannot respond to Trent's claims. All Winger did was take a small part of what Trent stated and claimed that Trent did not represent Catholic teaching in that one are of minutia. Winger left 99% of what Trent responded with unchallenged. I believe that if one watches all of Trent's videos it will be difficult not to become Catholic. I would also suggest listening to Dr. David Anders on a radio show named "Called to Communion." These fellows do not give one time hit jobs regarding Protestantism, they systematically show where Protestants misrepresent Catholicism and they show you the sources that you can read for yourselves. I am glad I came across Trent's polite and thorough rebuttals to help me finally come home to the Catholic Church.

This Pastor is making some bold claims. I don't even think he did any more than a cursory study of the matter, and his confirmation bias shows right from the start. I'm Lutheran and am really starting to believe Roman Catholicism, but slowly. I've been a Protestant theology guy and former Baptist pastor for a long time, so it's hard to even consider this. But worth it.

Thank you Trent for doing this. These "pastors" tell you that the Church has no authority and then they turn around and interpret scripture as if he himself has authority to interpret scripture. What a hypocrisy!

Trent, this is the video that really solidified my decision to become Catholic. I was leaning that way and one of my friends sent me the link to Mike Winger's video. I watched it and wanted to see what a Catholic response might be. After watching this video, I felt even more compelled to come home. Thank you for all that you do. Your podcast/RU-vid channel has really helped me as I have wrestled through different theological issues!

"you would never read the bible and come up with that doctrine" Mike, Mike, Mike. This happens when you take a Catholic book and decapitate it from the faith from which it came. Open your bible to the table of contents. This too is a doctrine that you hold, an infallible belief, that your Old Testament has 39 writings, and your New Testament has 27. Yet, you would never ever come up with THAT doctrine either reading the bible. Yet you do. And that's just ONE of your beliefs ... new ones only the last 500 years of Christianity.

I don't understand why these preachers spend so much time bashing Catholicism even if it wasn't the truth. We Catholics spend our Sunday sermons preaching about the gospel and how to live a Christian life, not ranting about Mormons for example

Actually, it was studying passages like that closely while I was a Protestant that pushed me towards Catholicism. Why? Looking back at the end of John's gospel, Christ says "MY sheep." How many of the sheep belong to Christ? All of them. The whole world is Christ's flock. So when Christ tells Peter specifically to feed His sheep, that encompasses the whole Church. It's also in Matthew how Christ doesn't merely give Peter the key to Heaven, but gives Him the authority to bind and loose laws in Heaven--that's an insane amount of power. No one else in the Bible is given the authority to bind and loose laws in Heaven except Peter and then the rest of the apostles, and we see the apostles swiftly acting to appoint successors in Acts, which shows us where bishops came from.

Time for us Catholics to go FULL OFFENSIVE! No more will we stand and roll over for the errors of the Protestants! Go out into the world baptising them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! And that we shall do!

The Church Fathers are the Fathers of the Church just as Joseph was the father of Jesus. He wasn't the one who created, conceived, or birthed Jesus, but Joseph was the one who raised Jesus.

I'm very interested in church history and thus catholicism. I wonder if you could answer a question about the perpetual virginity if Mary. If she remained a virgin, what was the purpose of her being married to Joseph?

In acts 15, Peter literally didn’t end the debate! Paul and Barnabas continued. Then James decided, not Peter! Trent is twisting what it says. There is nothing there that says the others believed Peter made a dogmatic infallible statement. James clearly didn’t think so, Paul and Barnabas didn’t think so.

When I watched Mike Winger give this talk, I thought he was bringing up good points. After watching Trent dismantle his arguments piece by piece, I'm left wondering how Mike ever came to any of his conclusions. Is it just cognitive dissonance ?

I just get so tired of the shallow theology of protestant pastors like this dude. They can't even get the Catholic position right before trying to attack it. And their critiques are just so shallow and tedious; they don't talk higher level theology or philosophy and instead pick and choose particular passages or partially presented doctrines to critique, which again, they don't even present correctly. You either believe what God says, or you believe yourself instead. The only way you can understand the Bible is if you have received the author, the Holy Spirit. The only way you can receive the Holy Spirit is to obey the gospel that saves - the gospel of this church age (1 Cor 15:1-4)- you have to trust it. Most people, especially Protestants, only believe it in vain. They have not become born again, even though they may often hear the preaching of the gospel! It is because they have not applied it to themselves personally. They are still blind. They too, are in it for pleasing men, not God! No church can save you - only Jesus Christ! It's a personal relationship with Him - God draws you to Him if you surrender your beliefs and humbly ask God to open your understanding. Myself, I had to surrender my pride in my good works. I asked God to forgive my UNBELIEF and that is when the Holy Spirit began to minister to me. It's a miracle!!! He lead me to understanding the scriptures better and that I need to trust what happened at the cross and that there is no other way God can forgive my sins!!! Salvation has nothing to do with your perfect church attendance! If you need an institution (or any religion) to interpret the Bible for you, then you are spiritually dead and on your way to hell. That is not fruit of the Spirit. The reason why most people do not receive the Holy Spirit is because they are spiritually blind to God's Word. They do not believe it for what it says. They PREFER to have a learned-council that uses logic and philosophy to come up with doctrine. God is not in that!!! Remember, God gives grace to the humble. He does not help the "wise". Fools tend to have a better chance! Jesus wants us to come to Him and believe on Him (John 6:35) like AS a little child (not when you are an infant.) Children are more apt to trust God more than adults. I was blind and deaf until age 38 when I read the scriptures and as painful as it was to consider it to be true, I finally surrendered and got saved - all by myself because the Holy Spirit drew me to God. God will not save the prideful and rebellious. You can appear holy to men but God knows your heart. A lot of "good people" are in hell. The sinners who repented and obeyed God are in heaven. You see? What the world says is good or evil is way different than what God says!!! Please, I warn you, please consider this! If you can't understand God's word, then ask God to minister to you. He hearkens to a humble and contrite heart! Not to a heart that seeks to prove your personal beliefs are correct! Jesus called the Pharisees the blind leaders of the blind. If this makes you fuming angry, please know the devil hates comments like mine. The "old me" would have hated this comment - I was loaded with devils even though the world saw me as a "saint". God delivered me of devils when I received His Spirit! I give Him all the praise and glory!!!

Mike scorns the later Church Fathers who, as Trent points out were brilliant theologians. Yet he accepts the authority of Luther, Calvin, Zwingli etc who all disagreed with each other on fundamentals of faith. Where did they get their authority from - an authority more papal than any pope would ever claim. The result of their teaching is the fragmentation of Protestant Christianity leading to anyone being able to set himself/herself as a pastor of a church, chapel or meeting house bearing no resemblance to the Church evidenced to by the early Church Fathers. Get real Mike!

Mr. Horn, I found your video after having watched one of Winger's videos. Your video was referenced in one of the comments. I am neither Roman Catholic, nor Winger's barnd of Protestant. I am Episcopalian. As such, I am reasonably familiar with both Roman Catholic teaching, as well as the major strains of Protestant teaching. I immediately recognized that Winger was indulging in a gross distortion of Roman Catholic teaching. I was put off by Winger's arrogance, by his "I'm right, Catholics are wrong" attitude. In a comment to his video, I pointed out that his entire thesis rests on the belief that the Bible is the sole source of authority of the Church, and that Catholics recognize other sources, such as the Magisterium (teaching authority) and tradition of the Church, and that if Roman Catholics believed that the Bible is the sole source of authority, they wouldn't be Roman Catholics! (As an Episcopalian/Anglican, I, too, recognize additional sources of authority besides Scripture, including tradition, reason and experience.) I also reminded him that none of us has access to the fullness of God's truth, so a little humility is called for! Also, with regard to 2 Timothy 3:16-17, I have pointed out that 2 Timothy is believed by most scholars to be written sometime around 64-65 A.D., before at least 3 of the 4 Gospels had been written, and before Acts, the three Johannine letters and Revelation. So whatever 2 Timothy was referring to by the word "Scriptures," it certainly wasn't to the Bible as a whole, nor even to the New Testament. There is also a certain incoherence about believing that the Church derives its authority from the Bible. It was the Church- -- a Church that already had bishops, priests and deacons -- that codified the canon of Scripture! So, if anything, the Bible is authoritative because the Church has declared it so, and not the other way around. Anyway, thank you for this excellent rebuttal!

I think it’s absolutely hilarious how in Protestant church’s they going around teaching how oh Catholics are so unbiblical Mormons are so unbiblical Jehovahs witnesses are so unbiblical like no one else does that except Protestant church’s. Sorry, a humble servant doesn’t accept the titles that aren’t his. “Holy Father”, “vicar of Christ”, and “lamb of God”. Those titles are reserved for the ONLY Father in heaven, the Holy Spirit who in dwells all who are in Christ, and Jesus who IS the lamb of God. The Catholic Church does force priest to be celibate, they don’t have a choice. Just realize that the man they claim to be the first pope couldn’t be a pope today or even become a pries because of celibacy.

Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ."47 This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome." just to point out, regardless of whether you agree with this, churches that say pastors should be married are specifically saying so due to the versus of paul that state elders and deacons should be the husband of one wife. Mike has shown that he actually disagrees with this interpretation and therefore would not say pastors need to be married.

That's another reason why I like the King James: it makes the singular and plural pronouns obvious through uses of "thee" (singular) and "you" (plural).

Also, if Peter was indeed “the first pope” as you defend, then shouldn’t his humility be the absolute model for future popes? We can see throughout history that this was not the case. The popes in history have been far from humble, and outright horrible people (one only needs to read the catholic encyclopedias about past popes to learn about their evil acts), and even if you look at our modern popes, and the Cardinals and the bishops, do we not see a total lack of humility -starting from their entitlements, and by which they are shown reverence with kissing the ring and only wearing black to visit with him, the sexual scandals, etc. All of the man-made traditions involving the pope and the magisterium seem to be in direct conflict with what the Bible says about Peter and the other apostles. They are sinful men just like the rest of the world, and they do not hold authority over how to interpret the Bible. And this connects as to why we should not hold man-made doctrine and traditions over what is revealed in the Bible. We are repeatedly worn throughout the Bible not to trust the wisdom of man over God’s wisdom. That’s the bottom line for me, as someone who wants to please God in how I worship Him- I want to worship according to God’s will (divine scriptures and Gospel), and not risk offending God with my worship that is man-made doctrine that we are repeatedly warned about throughout the New Testament.

I feel like Mr. Winger knows the truth, but he can't admit it because he'll be out of a job. He knows how to glaze over some points of doctrine that he can't argue, so I think he knows he is wrong.

Context matters, the Bible is clearly talking about Jesus’s mother and brothers, you have to twist it in order to change it into cousins and aunt. Later Jesus says who are my mother and brothers, here it makes no sense at all that Jesus is referring an aunt and cousins.

Yeah I was Catholic growing up. We were told only the priest can interpret the bible. Although we did study the bible but the priest interpreted what it said. You lost me at your first like around 2:50. Thanks but bye.

Why call him the pope though because pope comes from papa meaning father and jesus says call no one amongst you father for you only have one father who is in heaven in matthew 23:9 also it says to not call someone teacher or rabbi for you have one teacher and you are all brother's in matthew 23:8 also most protestants follow some teachings of pope augustine and some of the church fathers teachings.

The Bible clearly says you must believe before being baptized. This fact discredits infant baptism. Acts 2:38 says to repent and be baptized-an infant can’t repent. Mark 16:16 says whoever believes and is baptized will be be saved -an infant cannot believe. Acts 2:41, those who accepted his message-how can an infant accept the word?

I have an objection for your second point. I think it would need to be proven that the Catholic church does not create new doctrine. In practice, they can, and the only thing they need to make sure of is not to contradict previous doctrine too hard. An example would be that baptism with water is required for salvation, but don't worry, you don't need to be baptized to be baptized - if you were going to get baptized, or died as a martyr, that's basically a baptism even though its not. Another example might be no salvation outside the Catholic church, except now you can maybe be potentially saved without being a Christian at all, because we can define that as being saved *through* the Catholic church. The Newman school of thought is built entirely around this concept.

Not to take anyting from Trent, who did an excellent job in his rebuttal, but Mike's arguments were stretched. Mike may be a nice guy but his understanding of Scriptures is flawed. His mischaracterization of the Church Fathers was almost deliberate. @TheCouncilofTrent, @1:05:04 you mentioned Emperor Julian made Christianity the official religion in the empire? You meant Constantine, right?

Wait, this is a sermon he is giving? Or a lecture? Because if this is a sermon, they need to stop letting us live in their heads rent free. I've never been to a Mass where they expounded upon why Protestants are wrong.

I really feel sorry for this poor pastor, he has the arrogance and a lack of humility. He comes across as all-knowing and authoritative in his own right! Why I could never be a Protestant- Yes or NO questions for protestantism: 1. Where does it say in your Bible you are saved by faith alone and can never be unsaved? Hint Rom 2:6, Matt 16 27, Rev 22:12 2. a) Does everyone have freewill to come to God and be justified and b) are those deemed lost (by Calvin's fickle diety), eternally lost? 3. Do you believe Scripture that we ALL will be judged according to our works Matt 16 27, 25:34-, Rom 2:6? 4. Do u define urself as an "elect" to have an exemption in needing to work out ur Salvation with fear and trembling or persevering to the very end as Paul in 2 Tim 4? 5) do 75 warnings in Scripture about how a righteous person can lose their salvation apply to those who think they are once saved always saved? 6) does the word Faith appear at all in the Sermon on the Mount for all those who r told will inherit the kingdom of God? cf. Matt 25 7. Do those who are made "clean" and attached to the True Vine have to remain there producing good fruit, to be saved? 8) Will God remain in you if u don't freely remain in him, or could disown someone who was never "owned" by him in the first place ? Matt 10.33 9) both Luther in his book Bondage of the Will and Calvin in his institutes deny man has freewill. If God chose whom he will save and deny before the creation of the world, would that bring Him any glory? 10) Jesus tells us the greatest commandment is to love God, ourselves and our neighbour. Is love possible at all, if we are denied free will?

The Bible says for someone to be a bishop/overseer/pastor/elder requires you to be married if u read the requirements so Protestants don’t get that from tradition

The sign on the wall behind him looks like someone pulled it out of a garbage dump. That is one thing that always bothered me when I was in protestant churches were the bare walls and cheap furnishings. I think the Lord deserves far better than that! (Currently a confused protestant)

One mistake, Emperor Julian Was actually the emperor that tried to replace the church with the old pagan ways, it was emperor Theodosius the Great that made the church the official religion of the empire

Sadly, before examining Catholicism and becoming Catholic, I would have eaten up the words of Mike Winger and then used it to talk against Catholics, just as I did with my own protestant pastors. It's embarrassing how arrogant and incorrect I was.

I was raised an Evangelical Christian. I started investigating Catholic theology to prove it wrong. I was confirmed as a Catholic a year later. When I looked at what Protestants claimed the church taught compared to what it actually taught and it’s answers, the obvious choice was to join.

I love how Trent horn interacts with the content of his opponent in a charitable tone. And also he gives us quite some good content on Church doctrines and history! I guess this, hopefully, future exchange between the two will raise a better understanding on the subject under discussion to all who will follow it! 😇

I've seen a trend of these Protestant apologists citing secondary scholarship on the Fathers and the Scriptures that is often hundreds of years old. James White does this as well.

I thank God everyday that I decided to study Catholicism for myself and stop blindly believing what I was taught by people who have no idea.

I’m currently in RCIA, and even while coming to making the decision to join RCIA I viewed these videos of Mike Winger’s. They did confuse me quite a bit, to be honest. I wish I knew about these rebuttals earlier, thank you Trent!

I was baptized Catholic as an infant. I made my first confession and communion, then as a teen I devolved into a sinful lifestyle and rejected God entirely. I said (even to myself) that I didn't believe in God, but deep down I knew I did. As I got older I started to believe in a God of my own making that "knew my heart" and would being me to Heaven regardless of my unrepentant sin. Then I was given a King James Bible and started to understand Christ for myself. I have the Bible many times through now and I also have a copy of the. Apocrypha as well. I feel such a true connection with Christ now. I heard so much anti Catholic propaganda when I was watching RU-vid videos to enhance my Bible reading that I never even considered coming back. Lately though, I've been watching a lot of Catholic content and reading the Church father. Thank you for your videos they have helped me a lot.
