Why certain naturally occurring wildfires are necessary - Jim Schulz

Our early ancestors relied on lightning to cause forest fires, from which they could collect coals and burning sticks to help them cook food and clear land. Yet, it wasn’t just humans who benefited from these natural phenomena. Even as they destroyed trees, fires also helped the forests themselves. Jim Schulz outlines the benefits of wildfire.

Guys, for christ's sake, the Amazon is a tropical forest, different from the one in this video. There aren't coniferas in the amazon, for example, and the weather is too humid for it to catch fire naturally. It's a man made fire to illegally create space for the agribusiness' corn and soy culture.
@wildlandfirefighter5656

@mulungu6478
@mulungu6478 4 года назад
But the amazon doesn't naturally burn like californian forests. The trees are different, the weather more humid and the soil isn't as fertile, due to heavy rains. It's a man-made fire, in ecological and indigenous preservation parks, by the agrobusiness men to illegally create space for the soy and corn culture.
@dcardigan13
@dcardigan13 4 года назад
@@mulungu6478 I'm not sure and I can't trace back where I saw it, but I think I came across a post stating/warning people that a portion of the Amazon was going to be cleared out for exactly those agricultural purposes. It didn't happen yet during that time so it didn't reach a large audience (or no one really made a move and took the warning seriously). And I think it was partly because most of us were skeptical if it was really true and "they" were really going to go through with it because it was _the Amazon! They can't be serious!_ But I guess soy and corn truly are in large demand today that burning the Amazon was "necessary".

In a crown fire, that is true. They would be totally consumed. The cones and seeds do not survive a stand-replacing, crown fires the seeds are not lofted into the air. This is an error in this presentation. Serotinous cones need a ground fire to pop the seeds open. A ground fire burns the undergrowth and debris on the forest floor. The temperature at the crown/cone level reaches that magical temperature which pops the cones. After the relatively low intensity fire clears the undergrowth and the old debris, a new mineral rich soil is available for seeds. The heat from a ground fire also kills some of the upper needles allowing more sunlight through. Overall a good presentation, but it has some errors in it.

Australian Aboriginals were well known to be great caretakers of "their" local land, deliberately lighting fires to promote new growth and clear up "fire-fodder", and also to flush out the odd meal. Do you know what went wrong last year in Aus? Someone in Western Aus. dictated to officials in Victoria to produce a controlled burn, even when those officials stated the conditions were too dry, hot and windy. Major bush-fire resulted in loss of life, animals, livelihood, homes, etc. because of ONE man on the OTHER side of the country. He didn't personally know the area, or care about it either, or listen to those who did. Aboriginals did it better.

@TheMasterFro
@TheMasterFro 8 лет назад
each pod releases hundreds of seeds so the hat the likelihood of one of those seeds surviving is high. But yes some seeds are burned in the fire

The thing is, if there is no wildfire the trees become easier to burn, but that does not mean just let the whole forest burn, but controled fire
