Over the last few years, a new social trend has come up, where young Chinese people just don't really want to celebrate Chinese New Year anymore. Why is that? Today in our new video podcast series, Jun Laoshi and I are sharing some thoughts.

I would have listened to you both for much longer! You are my favorite Chinese instructors/motivators! The more I learn about Chinese society the more I find similarities with Northern Spain, with just 20 years difference: urbanization started here in the 70's. You and I seem to be the "bridge" between the generations of pure farmers (our grandparents), migrants (our parents) and pure urbanites (our kids/nephews). I also remember the intergenerational gatherings of my childhood but now youngster prefer to travel on their own for the holidays. Qingdao sounds also similar (in a much larger scale! 😂) to Coruña where I live: the most important fishing harbor in Spain, with a major beer brewery.

Wow, this video is really interesting! I have a couple of younger friends in China, and I have noticed some of these things, now that you highlight them. For example, one doesn't want to go home to 过年 because of the "third degree" she will get from not only her parents, but also from her brother about not being married yet. The other one is from the south, and her extended family is quite large, but she mentioned that the celebration doesn't seem as good as in the past. There's not as much of a family spirit to it.. and her nieces and nephews only want to sit and play video games the whole time, instead of engage in family activities. But still she says that gathering together and preparing the food together is quite fun. I also want to comment on the video a bit. After taking your fantastic bootcamp and spending a fair amount of time just listening to Mandarin on the radio (as well as currently taking yet another course), I'm finding my listening comprehension has gone up quite a lot. I can pick up almost as much (I'd guess 75%) from listening at full speed as I can from reading the hanzi. So I find myself just listening for awhile, then reading the hanzi as you two speak. It's definitely feels like a new phase for me to be able to get this much from just listening. I used to have to stop on every screen full of subtitles so that I could read what is said in a given video. Now, at long last, I feel that log jam is starting to break up. So, I want to say a big Thanks! and I hope to see more of these videos coming :D

🎉❤ Loved this chat!!!! Lots of great dialogue here! Very interesting and engaging! This was a great idea! You too definitely hit on current thinking and I loved how you contrasted it with older customs, especially as a foreigner we are taught more of the older customs and then are left not understanding why the current customs are different amongst the people today.

I really enjoyed this episode! I hope that some Chinese traditions and customs don't dissapear because that's what makes China or any country really special. I think young people should keep the good aspects of traditions/cultures. From their perspectives it's hard to maintain the good aspects when the older generations don't want to let go of the bad parts and won't understand why they're bad. Please make more eps about traditional Chinese vs modern day Chinese social customs/beliefs/practices. Fēicháng gǎnxiè!! 春节快乐!

过年有两大元素;1、烧香拜佛,天地,祖宗,供品,祈福。2,家庭团聚,给小孩子发红包压岁钱。现在省时省力的在于年终大扫除,和准备年货。

This is the third video I've seen today talking about this particular topic, and it's fascinating to watch this kind of major social shift happen almost before one's eyes. My parents were the ones who lived through this kind of shift in my part of the world, so it's interesting to to hear about it from the perspective of an adult.

I'm really grateful that they did NOT slow down, and instead spoke naturally as they normally would with each other. There's already loads of content on the Internet in slow, simple Chinese for learners, but it's hard to find Chinese teachers on RU-vid who teach real Chinese as it's actually spoken.

Aw. That was a question to ask your wife ! I am French too but I think many of the benefits of the New Year traditions can be understood by everyone intuitively, like the clean-up aspect of it. But I'm a believer of feng shui so I'm biased !! 😊 Either way, Happy New Year !
