As the screenwriter of a number of PureFlix films, I could hardly agree more with your perspective. I grew up watching indie films of the 80s and 90s, those filmmakers managed to make art with small budgets because they had a passion for the medium. It's not the budgets. It is a disregard for the art of filmmaking. And faith films will not get better until the audience demands something better, but they tend to evaluate films solely on the message itself. As for the counterproductive hatred of atheists and other non-believers, I tried to buck that trend. In Hidden Secrets, the first film produced by PureFlix (but its second release), my co-writer and I sought to create a fuller, more sympathetic portrayal, and, if the following review is any indication, we succeeded: "But don't dismiss Hidden Secrets as The Big Chill rewritten from a Christian perspective. It has the nerve to make one of its most appealing characters, a stem-cell researcher played by John Schneider, an atheist and the least appealing a scripture-spouting hypocrite. While its proscriptive tendencies might not sit well with some moviegoers, it does strive to distinguish between sinner and sin. Even the death merchant and the homosexual - played by Arkansan Corin Nemec - are worthy of love and respect; it's their actions that God despises." Nowadays, however, the audience reward films that fight the Culture War for them. It is easier to generate anger than compassion. I have no interest in that. As for the muddled purpose of Christian films, I think you will appreciate my recent blog: seanpaulmurphyville.blogspot.com/2017/09/building-faith-based-film-ghetto.html

Sean Paul Murphy Thank you very much for watching the video and for your comment. It is indeed a shame that that it is easier to generate hate than compassion. What has baffled me is why most of it is being done by Christian filmmakers. I sincerely hope this changes, it could result a golden age of artistic movies connecting its audiences to the divine through spirituality and relatable truths. Thank you once again for watching.

Probably because it was adapting an interesting and compelling story, rather than making a modern-day preach fest. Which is more interesting? I think that honestly the movie was good because it was not aiming to "send a religious message" but was just trying to tell the story. It hit quite a few religiously accurate points because they consulted scholars from all 3 major religions that share the story.

My church took the youth group to see a Christian movie. We were expected to talk about it afterwards. I was the only one who didn't like the movie, and when I brought up my criticisms of it, call me an English student but I went straight for the fact that the movie was inconsistent in how it told its story. Long story short the movie was about a boy who was mad at God because his mom died. Over the course of the movie, he learns through his girlfriend and struggles that he should trust in God's plans even when they cause him grief. At the end of the movie, his brother dies. And he just... gets over it. There's not even a single scene of him grieving his brother, and their relationship was the most important thing in the movie. When I pointed out that the message of trust God was undercut by the fact that the main character, who had spent an ENTIRE MOVIE questioning God about the death of his mother, wasn't even going to have a single moment of being upset about the death of his brother?? It undercut the message, it disregarded characterization, and it honestly was unnecessary. The brother dying accomplished nothing, since it happened at the end of the movie, and thus the only thing it did was give the main character a reason to look like a hypocrite. Ugh. I hated it. I hated how they just tossed the brother away for tragedy and then never resolved it, never let the main character grieve, or even have a scene that established he now understands God's plan sometimes involves hardship. HE JUST GETS OVER IT. I pointed this out and every single other person talked about how beautiful it was. It's not human, it's not beautiful, and it doesn't make a good movie. It doesn't even make a good sermon. It was just dumb. Also the brother was disabled so it was an extra slap in the face to kill him for no reason.

Reminds me of this one Christian movie my high school class had to watch once. The main message is basically drugs are bad and don't ever do drugs. Most of it is pretty stupid and generic and the production is crap, but the ONE THING I cannot forgive is the fuckin BULLCRAP of an ending it had. TLDR the kid got addicted to drugs, he goes into rehab, finds himself again through a spiritual awakening in the church (of course), and then he decides to try to help his former drug buddies get some help. At this point, I loved the movie. Best Christian movie I ever watched (which isn't saying much). AND THEN THE KID DIED BECAUSE OF SOME BULLSHIT GANG REVENGE RIGHT AT THE END AND I JUST- It was unnecessary, the kid had a fuckin BEAUTIFUL character arc and the writers just THREW IT ALL AWAY for no good fuckin reason. It's basically sending the message that once you do drugs it stays with you for life and no matter what you do, you can never get away from it, and even if you DO get help and get away, you'll just end up dead. Which is a bullcrap message if you ask me.

So many people have religious trauma from other humans using the Bible and Jesus as a battering ram against one another. It's not okay what your mom said and it's none of our place to judge so harshly. Faith wavers in everyone, it doesn't make you a demon or the antichrist. That’s awful, I’m so sorry that happened to you. And contrary to what the the first rude reply said... words _can_ in fact be traumatic, especially in the form of parents belittling or disparaging their children like that. Verbal abuse and emotional abuse are real and can be seriously damaging. It’s okay and perfectly normal to question your beliefs or have wavering faith. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, in fact I’d argue that it’s healthy to question these things and how you feel about it. I think that if you choose to practice a religion, it’s much healthier if it’s because you genuinely want to, not because you feel like you _have_ to, or because your family forces or shames you into it. So if you no longer have faith in a religion then that‘s perfectly fine, it’s up to you and they have no right to judge you for it. You can believe however much or however little you want to of any religion, it’s an entirely personal choice/personal philosophy

I’m glad though that my parents taught me to respect everyone’s beliefs and to mind my own business. While it’s true that we should respect others’ beliefs, that doesn’t mean that we should “mind our own business” all of the time. We are called to spread the Good News and to be always ready to give a defense of the Faith. This will often involve telling people that they’re wrong. And though many would perceive this as disrespect, it’s not; we are called to do these things in love, but never at the expense of truth. The truth, unfortunately, can hurt. It’s especially dangerous to think close association with unbelievers is harmless. Now, surely we should still associate with unbelievers-for how else could we share the light? But one mustn’t be ignorant with regard to the pitfalls of sin. Bad company corrupts good character. Using discernment in matters of choosing fellowship is vital. That is to say, it is quite literally a matter of life and death. Will your loyalty be to the world (and therefore death), or will it instead be to God, in whom all things have their life?

What I as an atheist find especially problematic about these films is that they don't even seem to understand what atheism is. They depict the atheists not only as pure evil but also not as real atheists. They depict them as people who ultimately know that there is a god, but are filled with contempt towards them. This is completely wrong and the exact opposite of what we are. Atheism is not a hate towards god, it is a lack of belief and therefore, an indifference to a god. Atheists do not in any way believe in god and to depict us as believers who simply hate him shows that in the christian community, there is a lack of understanding what the difference in our positions and beliefs even is.

This is one of the reasons I love The Chosen so much. Even the Pharisees and the Sanhedrinists and the Romans - antagonists who we’re not supposed to root for - are still depicted as human beings with complex thoughts and emotions. Hacksaw ridge had a memorable impact on me too, but I also wished I hadn't watched it, and read the stories instead. I watched it with a group of people and missed the clip that showed the rating; otherwise I wouldn't have watched it because violence is too triggering for me. I wonder if there would have been a way to present that story without getting so graphic, to make it more accessible to viewers who steer away from mature content ratings. I was under a cloud for the next 24 hours and decided it wasn't worth it to watch R-rated movies. It's a tough decision because those raw depictions have a strong impact, and maybe the film would be less effective without them, but more people would be reached as well. It takes creativity to depict harsh events in a way that brings the same weight without crushing sensitive viewers. Desmond Doss' challenge was analogous to that of Christian filmmakers today: to enter the battlefield without shedding blood.

@@blackmber I don't think you could make a War film without violence....War is most definitely a violent endeavour, even more violent than the films it's portrayed in...making a war movie where there's no gore or blood wouldn't be accurate...the beauty of Hacksaw Ridge is in fact it's violence....the fact that one man, in the midst of the violence and hatred of war, was still able to show kindness and love even for humans that were meant to be his enemies....since in real life Desmond Doss even saved a few Japanese soldiers

But that also happened in a period when the Church had enormous political power throughout Europe and almost everyone was Christian unless they'd be tried and killed for heresy. But there is no one Church institution with a power even resembling a fraction of that today. An interesting tidbit is that the Protestant Reformation started because of the monk Martin Luther being so appalled at the fact that the Church was selling indulgences through missionaries all throughout Europe as a means to raise money for a massive church project, the construction of St. Peter’s basilica.

He called himself a Christian. When he finally asked me out on New's Years Eve, I thought I had hit the lottery. We met & talked. He expressed that he finally "found his place" in God's ministry. I, however, told him that since I had endured many health problems & broken hearts that I lost faith in GOD, & I'm OK with that. We went to his house & things were going WAY TOO FAST & I felt very uncomfortable. I told him to stop, but I literally had to fight him off. He said "All I need to do is ask for forgiveness. You are already cursed to Hell so why are you resisting?" I stormed out of his house, & never looked back. I experienced something similar to this in a few points of my life. I’m a Nondenominational Christian and have been all my life/as long as I can remember. Even though I went to a Baptist school from the time I was 4 til I was 14, I always knew that different religions existed and never saw them as inferior to mine. I was never told to disrespect people of different faiths, and I still don’t to this day. It makes me feel ashamed to see people being persecuted for their faith, whether it be Christians like me or people of other religions. I’ve never tried to dumn down people’s faith with science. Even though there’s things I scientifically believe/know that don’t actually hold up in the Bible (like Earth only being 6,000 years old instead of OVER 4 BILLION years old and dinosaurs walking alongside humans), it doesn’t sway me from my faith and make me believe that it’s all just lies. Since I was 3, I’ve been obsessed with biology and how the natural word works, particularly the prehistoric creatures of Earth (mainly dinosaurs). Even though Earth is well over 4 billion years old and life has existed since 3 billion years ago, it doesn’t make me believe that God didn’t create everything. I know evolution exists, as there’s proof of it, but there’s also proof of Biblical events too and I’ve never been swayed by that. Like I said, I don’t and try not to disrespect people because of their faith. But, I have seen people be disrespected for their beliefs. When I was in 8th Grade, our history teacher was a Christian who used to go to my Church. I was an old friend of her daughter too. Almost every day, we’d start off class by reading a certain chapter or so of a certain Book in the Bible. One of my classmates was an atheist, but I never called him an idiot for not believing. My history teacher didn’t either, she respected his opinion. One part of that came down to her not forcing him to read the verses everyone else read. Then one day, we had a sub. She wasn’t aware that my friend was an atheist, and so asked him to read. When he refused, she got mad at him. Everyone else tried to explain to her what was going on, but she refused to listen and had him sent to the office. I thought to myself, “What just happened?” That same year in 2018, I had been going to Church for years, but then my older cousin invited me to go to Youth Group with him. Youth Group at my Church is a Wednesday night event from 6 : 30 - 8 PM at my Church for all the teenagers to have a night every week to see eachother, hang out, and have more experience to get to know God on a personal level through our Youth Leaders. One of them who I’ve known for years is practically my best friend, and even though I’m technically too old to be a teenager at Youth Group now (I’m almost 19 as of the time that I’m writing this comment), that doesn’t stop me from talking to him or any of my other best friends from Youth Group. When I first started going to Youth Group, I was also told about CIY: A one week trip where Christian teens from across the country would get their Youth Groups together and head to college campuses that were open in summer just for us. The one me and my Youth Group went to is in Salisbury, Maryland, and I was absolutely HYPED to start going. When I went and came back, I knew I’d be going next year. And guess what? I did! CIY was and still is amazing for me, a week to get away from all the pressures of life at home and come together with your friends and hundreds of other people to share the love of God. When COVID hit in 2020, I was devastated that I couldn’t go to CIY that year or the following year. I did, however, have the chance to go in Summer 2022, the last time I could go as a Student (I was 18 1/2). It made me upset to know that, at 18, I could no longer be a Student at CIY or in Youth Group, but it made me happy to know that I could still be with my friends again. This time though, I witnessed something strange. On a few nights this time around, we would have a message at the end of the day talking about people suffering in a certain country around the world from many of the problems in that country, but the religion of those people was always listed as a problem as to why they were suffering. To say that a people’s religion is a reason for their suffering, to compare it to prostitution, drugs, and gang warfare, was not only insulting to me, but to my whole group and probably many others. We had talks afterwards on those same nights concerning the ethics of saying a message like that, and it made me wonder as to why anyone in the 21st Century of Modern World would sound so Christian supremacist in their message. I know that there’s things that I don’t yet understand about my religion, but I know that one of them is not to villainize and demonize other people for faiths. If Christ said to speak with love, to love your enemy, than why should we be taught now to hate them?

As someone who isnt Christian, the few Christian films I have watched, I watched with friends to make fun of. Not because they're religious films but because they sometimes fit the so bad its funny category. With things like bad acting and bad writing, like Troll 2 and Llamageddon. Awful Awful films, but they're really funny to laugh at. Then I came across a film that I just thought was going to be bad, the premise is: It's 2025 and Christianity is illegal and the world is taken over by one government that forces communism. So from that I thought it would be hilarious. It was the most boring thing I have ever witnessed. It had many scenes of just characters talking in their basement and then one scene at the end where the main character is in a car chase and then executed for being Christian. Although two films, that are actually on RU-vid, well they're films about the Catholic faith and they're are my two favourite films ever. All I'll say is its called Karate Nun and its about a Lesbian nun with a thirst for vengeance and she must save the catholic faith from Nazis, the Illuminate, the Illuminazis, Communists and Evolution/Karate Charles Darwin.

I believe that the problem with most Christian movies is that they are not (only) Christian movies, but Evangelist ones. Their main goal is to convert and strengthen a person's belief, rather than to tell a story. This rather utalitarian approach just messes with the film's quality, as the goal is put front and center, rather than the story. However, it doesn't mean it has to mean that every Christian movie is bad. I mean, a more popular movie is Bruce Almighty, which talks about the problem of theodicy, an often overlooked topic. Another good, yet lesser known Christian movie is Adams aebler, a danish movie about a Neonazi who has to do community service by staying at a remote church for other troubled adults. In that movie the pastor of that church is reliving the story of job. It's a really good dark comedy that also offers an insight into how people generally see suffering and how we could see it to make it more bearable, if you take your time and think about why the pastor does these things that way. In conclusion, what we want are not Evangelical movies, but Theological ones. After all, a good story entertains us, while a great us can teach us something that will stay with us.

Life is tough for Irish-American and Italian-Americans in the 'ethnic' slums, but criminality is shown to lead to a very bad end. I want to make a coherent story that is compelling, but I also want to be that “light” that points to Jesus. And when those thoughts come to mind, I remember J. R. R. Tolkien. He was a wonderful Christian and helped lead the author of the famous Narnia series to Christ. But he also convinced his students of the existence of leprechauns by bringing tiny shoes to his lectures, went to a non-costume party dressed as a polar bear, and chased people down the streets of his college town dressed as a Viking. Christian creativity is not dead, it’s just trapped by the stuck up “holier than thou” people who put a mile-wide line between the Sacred and the Secular.

@electragoob, that's so true. Most of the people who like my stuff are non-Christians, the few that are Christians are more friends than fans. I often get dunked on because of "sci-fi", aliens or I write capable female heroines (with a little bit of anime flavor). A person I will not name finally started publishing stuff, and was in a community full of Christian writers. When said person started publishing supernatural fantasy, most of them excommunicated them and have stopped talking to her. I will admit very few things I do have a Christian message that's obvious, and that's usually not the reason i write. But one of the reasons I do create is to provide something for a Christian audience. It may not have Christianity in it, but it was written by someone with that viewpoint.

I've seen some great Christian/faith building movies the last few years (at least for a Christian like myself), but I totally agree. I'm an aspiring filmmaker myself, but not only because I want to convey a message. I love the art, and my background is in the theater. I love the process of creating and exploring, working with the actors, discovering the magic that light can do and so on. I'm not interested in just saying the same things one could more easily say in a sermon or in an anecdote. I desire to go deeper and discover that deep that can touch each person, whether they are Christian and not, and reveal some universal truth, that hopefully can bring them closer to see who Christ really was and is. I just made a short film about my own struggles in building a Christian focused filmbuisness, and sent it to a Christian film festival. My animist friend from Nepal saw it and said afterwards: this is not for Christians only, this is universal. That was a great compliment, even though I know the production quality was not that high. In the end of the day it's not whether the film has the highest quality in light and cinematography. You can forgive a lot of that. It becomes preachy when it's not transperant, not honest, when you feel that the journey is already made. I have a goal and I have a standard, but I wanna learn, explore and discover on the way, and be open for God to take me to new, unknown places. And my respect for the truth and experiences of other people will be one of my guides. That's what challenges us and helps us grow.

This movie is a woefully inaccurate biopic on Rachel Scott; the first victim of the April 20, 1999 shooting at Columbine High School. It absolutely pisses me off to know that Rachel's family sold her life story to movie producers to make a quick buck. Can you imagine the outcry if PureFlix made a movie about the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, FL or the 2011 tsunami in Japan? I imagine the former would be God punishing gays and Muslims and the latter would depict the tsunami as God punishing the Japanese for not being as Christian as their neighbors in South Korea.

And it's not just that atheists are portrayed as cold hearted and apethetic, these movies also strawman the atheist position itself. So in the movie the christian always gets the final word and makes the better points and destroys the atheist with reason and logic. The problem is, that's just not what happens in the real world and the only reason they win all the arguments on the screen is because it's impossible to lose an argument when you control both sides of the debate. Christians take lines from these movies and try to use them on actual atheists and are totally taken aback when the atheist doesn't follow the script like the character in the movie did. Only God can make you believe. The Holy Spirit is the one who draws us to Jesus. I've experienced the true God in a supernatural way, He drew me in. No one made me. For that reason I am a firm believer that one who doesn't believe or know the truth must seek the truth on their own in order for true faith to take root. We who have been born again should plants seeds for our loved ones but then it should be left up to prayer and trusting the Lord to bring them the rest of the way. We can talk until we are blue in the face but if the Holy Spirit isn't drawing our loved one to Jesus, they will just put up a wall. Only He can open eyes, ears and hearts. I'm sorry you've had bad experiences that turned you away. I made the same mistakes after first being born again. Please understand that it's a zeal that's hard to contain. For me, at first I thought that if I could just get them to experience the exact thing that I did or get them to say the same prayer that I said on the day that I heard Him in the deepest part of my being, then they too could receive this wonderful gift that I'd received. (I used to be a worker in the adult industry but He completely changed my nature and it caused me to no longer want to be there anymore, even the money no holds on me to keep me there. His love far exceeded everything else.) After a while i realized that my experience was unique to me and that it wasn't because of anything other than the fact that He was drawing me and without that, I would have continued in my disbelief. So now I just share what He's done for me and leave it there. He will do the rest, But let me just say this, if you ever really do want to know the truth, to know the Creator, ask Him to reveal Himself to you in some way and show you the truth in His own way and help you to truly live the way you are meant to (not about church) but being restored to knowing Him. If you do, He's promised He will and He keeps His promises. Until that time He will remain alien to you and you won't know Him or the goodness and fullness of life that knowing Him brings when you know who you really are and what your purpose is. And I'm pretty sure I grew up to look more like a guy (which I am) for a reason. The only difference is that people who claim to love the same God beat me down whenever they can. The only one within my immediate reach that doesn't find me "repulsive" or "evil" because I dare to express my real soul? God. If what those hate preachers said was true, I'd probably be worse off. Humans in power will do anything to stay in power, ESPECIALLY manipulating the masses. I know you're now an ex-Christian, but you're not hated. These hate preachers who preach hate and hellfire use fear to get what they want. I had to figure this out for myself in order to stay strong (especially during lockdowns, and stuck with angry, biblical literalist ramblings, even though the King James Bible has many verses that contradict each other.) But It can't judge you. But I do emphasize with you for sharing an experience. But we can all agree that the story is atrocious. As an author, there are so many plot holes that this movie would make perfect imitation swiss cheese, the "athiest" was actually an angry theist, and the main character is your typical college kid who doesn't like that he isn't in charge, and has all the charm of a catheter full of wasps. It paints people of other religions as evil. Disowning RARELY happens to Christians! Hell, usually the ones doing the disowning ARE Christians! (Rest assured, I'm not a hypocrite and that will NEVER happen in my house!) Hate preaching has no place in my life; I have more important things like ACTUALLY being good to others, giving, and helping others. And to me, it's the moral compass that's the most important thing about a person. You can have any belief or lack thereof, but as long as you're a good, honest, genuine and moral person, you're a good person in my eyes, and that's all I see. That's how others should see too instead of being quick to judge. What matters is how you treat and love fellow human beings. I feel for you, deeply.

I was a 4 year old forced to sit entirely still for 15 minutes straight, and if I even said something such as “Please don’t.” Or “No thank you.” Or “Can I wait for my Mommy?” I was shushed and belittled. I was genuinely terrified, and all those adults did to help was tell me “Jesus is protecting you” even though I didn’t WANT that protection. My mother wasn’t there to stop any of this, and the only adult figure I knew that was there, being my grandmother, didn’t help me. They basically Baptized me without mine or my parent’s consent. My face was swollen and I could barely see by the end. That is a snuff film and no child should be forced to watch it. But I was a teen and had the capacity to understand and analyze what I had seen. Forcing a child of four to watch these types of movies is outrageous. I'm so sorry you had to go through that friend.

One of my favourite movies of all time, and one that has strong Christian themes, is Hacksaw Ridge. This movie was made by the same guys who made the John Wick movies, so it’s in no way “super Christian”. Yet the way they made this film made it far more impactful and faith-filled than any of the movies I’ve ever seen on PureFlix. Reason being is that the movie doesn’t force you to think about your ideologies and views of the world. And while it has scenes in which people are persecuting Desmond Doss for his beliefs, they also aren’t people being solely driven by blind and ignorant hatred and selfishness. The movie instead puts the focus on Doss and his choice to hold on to his faith in God and his personal convictions in order to do what he knows he is called to do. And through everything he had went through, and all the guidance God had given him throughout his entire life, he was able to accomplish the impossible, and through this save many lives literally and metaphorically. The movie had what many Christian movies don’t; it had heart.

I used to, also, wonder if the issue was the inadequate funding, low-budget, for the producuction of these Christian movies! I'm glad you discussed this in ur post! On the other hand, I know that Christians are very generous financially for the evangelism cause, (as well as for the charities!) They do mean well. My other theory was that there is a great pressure on the Directors to produce Evangelical movies that bring nonbelievers to the fold, 'to give nonbelievers a chance to hear the Gospel'! That, perhaps, the subtleness of the message was just not acceptable!? That the message needed to be 'shouted from the rooftops'! To justify the big money put into the production of the Christian movies!? I think too many Christians are so removed from the outside world that they lose touch on how the atheists and non-Christians think.. Especially, the ones that were born into the Christian families! 'Us-and-them mentality!' Yet, Christians, need to realize that they do Not have all the answers! And that being Subtle in the Christian - made movies is much more effective!

@@chandlerl2189 Why do the faithful bring up anything that has to do with science? God and religion are about astrology not astronomy. God is a mythical magical sky man, invented by man to fleece the faithful of their valuables. The book of God aka the bible is mostly fiction and certainly not a history or science text. The Exodus a pivotal event in the Bible never happened, Moses never lived and you can find real science facts that support these ideas. God is made in the image of man by man and is not real, no proof, ever.
@chandlerl2189
@chandlerl2189 3 года назад
@@philsmith5705 actually, there’s alot of archeological evidence that the events in the bible were true. And if you think about it, it’s all about perspective, just like everything else is in life. The bible was written for the jews, who were at that point in time a relatively unintelligent people. They hadn’t discovered a lot of the scientific breakthroughs we have today, and we take the assumption that God gave Moses a vision or told Moses about the creation, he would have put it into something he could understand. The way God created the world can never be understood by us, so he showed or told Moses it in a way that he either understood or interpreted to fit his ideas and knowledge about the world. God could have used the big bang to create. But if he showed moses, would he think that that was two particles coming together or would he interpret it as a big flash of light? As far as the valuables thing, the bible never says that tithing is a necessary part of faith. What God does ask is just for us to devote some part of ourselves to him and try to live for him. It could be talent or time, not just money. And there’s plenty of people who get into heaven who just believe and don’t actually give anything. I’m not big on tithing because I disagree with a lot of the organized church. So my valuables aren’t being taken in any way, but I find other ways to serve God. As for your final point about proof, there’s a lot of proof. In fact, many people who have tried to disprove Christianity and the existence of God have come back Christian. Take Lee Strobel: he was a journalist, atheist, who set out to disprove claims about Jesus, and then went on to become a Christian and write books like “the case for Christ” and “the case for faith”. As for actual proof, as a Christian, I see it all around me. If you want legitimate, physical proof, you probably won’t find much. I shudder to chalk it all up to faith but in some cases that’s what it really is. If you have faith it’s easier to find the proof, because God is different to everyone. That’s what’s great about Christianity: come as you are. God will accept you however you come to him, and from that you can worship him in almost any way you want to (minus like human sacrifice and all those weird things). And consider this: there are tons of earth-like planets with perfect living conditions. But there’s only civilization on one, ours. If we go by the theory that we are here because of enviornmental things that created life, then why isn’t there any on these other planets? It almost seems like we were put here. And Sir Issac Newton himself struggled for years to find an explanation for some of his discoveries, ultimately calling them “acts of God”. I would really love to answer any other questions that you may have. I realize I probably don’t give good answers, I’m far from a biblical scholar, and don’t claim to know practically anything about the word. Most of it is just as big a mystery for me as it is to you, and I’d love to explore it further here. Another key part is Never Stop Asking Questions! Have a great rest of your day! I hope to hear from you again!

I imagine if I were an atheist I'd be very unmotivated to convince people of something they really don't want to be convinced about unless they kept confronting me over and over and tried to get me to change. Then yeah, I'd get annoyed and argue back and tell them to go away. That part makes a lot of sense to me. But I don't think I'd go and try to convert anyone to atheism, because it's a lot of work for not much potential benefit. Even as a religious person I consider myself pretty benign. But it always felt like these films where escapism for the hardcore religious depicting an easy black and white world where the christian is obviously right and those that disagree are cartoonishly evil and blatantly wrong. In the way Pornography can satisfy our most carnal needs... so do franchises like God is not dead. These movies don't show the world as it is, but how a christian wants it to be. My better half is one though in his case he also refuses because of how long it has been. He was in training to become a pastor when his church that was friendly to these ideals had to move to get away from wealthy people trying to control there message. He had a great example in a pastor whose best friend was pagan. Turns out discussing the bible with someone who has a different view can help one be better at there path and force them to know it better rather than be earth shaking or faith shattering. Other churches around didn't agree and his acceptance and lack of hive mentality towards converting people was not taken to kindly. Anyway. I worry a bit for the boy. I live in Mexico, where about 90% of the population is Catholic, and I was also raised Catholic myself. I remember as a child, whenever a RU-vidr that I liked or someone I admired turned out to be an atheist, I would get genuinely sad and disappointed. I didn't hate them, but my opinion of them went down, like, how could they NOT believe in the almighty GOD? It was just insane to me. A few years later, my own sister told us she was an atheist, and it was truly an eye-opening experience. She never tried to convience me of anything, but the fact that my dear sister was now an atheist made me question if the whole atheism thing was as bad as I though, and as a result I opened my mind. I started to actually listen to people who thought differently from me and tried to reason what they said, which later led me to become an atheist. Nowadays, I'm an agnostic, and I recently discovered that my dad had always been one too, it was just that my mother forbade him from even mentioning it to us, but the majority of the peope who surround me are either Christian or Catholic, and I never look down on anyone as long as they treat me with the respect they preach.

I’m so glad I grew up with people who taught me these things so I didn’t turn into one of those people who hate those who don’t agree with them.

I used to be closed minded when I was a child and pretty much misunderstood the Bible quite often, especially with the parts when it comes to loving people For example the Bible despises LGBT practices but nowhere in there does it say to slander those people or preach hate against them... As an Agnostic, I've been judged for being skeptical of God more than anything by other Christians who try to convince me that I should believe in God because God loves me. I usually go with, "If God loves his children, why did he drown all but one family with a flood? Why has he killed the very children that he's supposed to love with fire and brimstone?" Usually instead of thoughtful answer, I just get repeated Bible phases or, "It's because God loves you" shtick. Also, "Christian persecution by Atheists" has the be the most ridiculous and hypocritical thing I've ever heard since for one thing, last I recall Christianity is still the most popular religion in the United States and Evangelicals are arguably the worst branch of Christianity because of how preachy they can be and try to shove it down your throat. At least in my experience. It's also the exact reason why I don't typically watch Christian movies because I know that people like myself and others aren't going to feel welcomed when they keep demonizing everyone who isn't a Christian all the time.

I used to ask those questions as well, but then I took a semester of intro philosophy in college and found an answer that I can actually understand. According to the Irenaean theodicy, we experience things like evil and pain because it is the only way for us to become more like God. The Bible states that humanity was created in God's image, so in order to become closer to God, i.e. more like him, he has inflicted upon us much suffering. You may then wonder why he didn't just make us perfect immediately. He is omnipotent and all-powerful, after all, so he should be capable of that. But what if this is the only way to go about it? I am not a Christian or Atheist, but rather Agnostic, and I still don't believe in God even after accepting the Irenaean theodicy's logic. The pure cruelty and hypocrisy of religion and its worshipers has forever stopped me from ever accepting any god.

God does not protect us from pain so, it is to test us with pain. Like in the old testament, Abraham's children were slaves for many generations. This in the bible and Jewish texts was depicted as a test of faith and those who stayed faithful were rescued by Moses and given the promised land. I don't blame you for notbelieving if God because if he is real than he should stop bad things from happening. In the bible it also says that God will protect you. So it is perfectly reasonable to not believe in God after such a tragedy happened in your family or country. But many see disasters as proof God is malicious or God is not real, I see it as tests of faith. I also thinks he prevents many disasters from happening, but we just have no idea that this disaster would happen. So when a disaster does happen, people assume that God is not real because this disaster happened. By the way, I am not a religious extremist, my way of belief is considered taboo in my family at least, not in my church. I believe in evolution and stuff like that. My family looks down on it while my church welcomes my take on religion. So don't take the word of a couple Religious fanatics as the mainstream religion voice. And don't think I am looking down on you or anything. I think you take on the matter is great and I really don't care if you are religious or not.

What's ironic about their depictions of "atheists" is that they're actually misotheists. Misotheists are people that believe in a god or gods but feel anger and hatred towards said entity. In this anger, they deny the existence their god or, alternatively, stop their worship as a form of punishment to god.

@Kaushik Mukkavilli Have yet to meet a misotheist but surely is weird calling yourself an atheist but believing in God all the same. As an atheist myself and knowing other atheists, that doesn’t describe us lol. I was a former Pentecostal Christian raised in a conservative family. Nothing inherently bad happened to me to hate God. I simply came to question my faith, did research on the accuracy of the Bible, and did research on Christianity as a whole. After some deep thinking and anxiety over my doubts, I finally accepted that God did not exist entirely. A similar story holds for the atheists I know who were former Mormons or Catholics.

Well I've been told that I don't actually think God isn't real I just want to sin... The problem I have with alot of Christians is that they are told by their pastors that this is what atheists think and they actually believe them, so many of them are told that atheists do believe in God and they just say they don't because they want to sin, or that atheists believe the universe came from nothing. Do you have any idea how frustrating it is to have someone tell you what you believe even though it's not even close and yet they are so adamant that it's true. Like how would you like it if I came up to and said hey your a Christian right? Well that means you actually believe in Satan and you just pretend to believe in God to justify your lifestyle. Of course it's not true and even if it might be for someone that doesn't mean it is even remotely true for everyone else.

@Comrade Sky - if you are going to attack an institution please do so with accurate data. The Roman Catholic Church is not the world's largest institution of child rape. When it comes to religious institutions, the prevalence of child molestation among Roman Catholic clergy is not higher nor lower than that of the clergy of other religious groups, Christian or other. It is no higher or lower than the rate of molestation in other institutions that deal with children in large numbers. Social groups like Boy Scouts and governmental groups like Child & Family Services, Foster care, etc. all have issues with physical and sexual abuse of children. The RCC does deserve criticism for their deplorable history of covering up the actions of abusing clergy and not referring them for criminal prosecution. They are not alone in that but they are the largest religious institution nailed for it. The Hasidic Jews have a large amount of criticism leveled at them for the same issue, as do the Fundamentalist Mormons with their "child brides". I am not a Christian and frankly, do not care much for the practices of some Christian groups but while I disagree with their religious views, I am not going out to attack all of them for the actions of a faction.

Yes they talked about God and showed the Bible.....but "God" can be attributed to multiple religions safely: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. They all have God. Jesus is what truly separates Christianity from the other 2. But nobody in Hollywood wants to mention Jesus. They all mention God and that's it. But we only know God and can come to Him Through Jesus. Jesus is the key player. He's the one we're to praise and pray to.

And I've seen Prince of Egypt, Ten Commandments, like Hollywood has proven they can make some bangers from Biblical mythology. Hell, the Metal genre of Music has done more to make Christianity sound hardcore and epic than traditionally Christian media usually does. So like I know this wild series of myths and all these interesting concepts that would be neat to see done in film. ....And instead all I get is "Christians are such victims! Feel bad for us, nonChristians are so mean to us, aren't we such martyrs you guys?!" Like... C'mon, the people who made Shrek shouldn't be the source of the last awesome Biblical movie.

@@patchwurk6652 I think the victim complex movies have ended up making themselves the public perception of Christian movies so now competent studios and film makers don't want to approach the genre for fear of being lumped in with them just on the basis of it being Christian. They've also given audiences the expectation that religious=preachy and ridiculous political strawmen so obviously most people will be turned off from the get go if they hear something is Christian, even if they're Christian themselves since the political positions advocated for in the victim complex movies are so far removed from what a lot of Christians believe.
