Why Concerned Ape Revealed Haunted Chocolatier SO Far in Advance

From what I remember, the advertising for witchbrook said “from the publisher of Stardew Valley” they were actively trying to use Stardew’s success to sell a completely unrelated game by misleading people who might not know publishers aren’t connected to the development process.

He also said that once he announces something, it lights a fire in him to actually do it. I think that was in the Reason interview he did a while back.

Man I had no idea. I kinda assumed it was so that people would stop wondering when the next SDV update would be 😂

Honestly, when you create one of the most successful indie games of all time as a solo developer Imma just trust your instincts when it comes to game dev and advertising 😂

SDV 1.6 is wrapping up. Really hoping that means Haunted Chocolatier is a spooky Fall 2024 release, but that’s maybe wishful knowing how perfectionist Concerned Ape is. At least we know the game will be amazing when it finally does release

So that explains why so far back in my memory of sdv I saw an orange fish

I think he just wanted people to know that there would be less big updates to Stardew Valley going forward. Like "Hey guys, I'm going to be busy with my new project so I won't be able to update Stardew Valley as much." Instead of saying nothing and everyone wondering if a Stardew Valley is dead or is expecting a big update.

Now I have to add two games to my wishlist

There's probably more to this story, as Witchbrook's art style and whole vibe, even game concept, was very much SV with witches. That's why it seemed like CA was probably the developer or at least involved in some way. Interestingly, Witchbrook has also faced major delays due to a total overhaul of the art direction that happened at around the same time the rumors were going on and when CA started self publishing. I suspect there was a stink behind the scenes where CA threatened copyright legal action if they kept developing a game that was so indistinguishable from CA's work and brand, which forced them to effectively start over and for CA to cut ties going forward. He's very generous about copyright stuff and modding with the community, but I can imagine that line ends with actual companies trying to stick their toes in his success.

He announced SDV in 2012 so technically speaking he announced SDV early too.

That's a really good way to seperate himself from the other game. It doesn't require him to say anything about the other dev, so they will ultimately stand on their own.

Interesting and I also like how in this trailer. It doesn't hype you up too much. It's very mellow and it's presentation and I just I like that. Like I'm excited, but I'm not overly hyped to the point of being disappointed if it doesn't come out anytime soon.

I cant wait for gab to play this game. I cant wait to play it. Idk what its about but its concerned ape so i have no doubts that it will be an amazing game

Frankly, I could wait for six years for Haunted Chocolatier. I have faith he will make a good game. I'm happy knowing he doesn't have to stress about fiances or deadlines forcing him to push out an unfinished game. It will be ready when it ready.

I thought another reason for the early reveal had to do with why he would be too busy to update Stardew Valley often. However, Stardew Valley just got a massive update, so I was wrong about that.

I remember Witchbrook being announced not long after Stardew blew up. Game looked really neat. Have not heard a single peep about it since, looking like it is vaporware.

This game leaves my mind for months at a time but then I pops up, I get hype and start scrounging around the Internet for content.

Huh, I just assumed it was a case of "my stock is still really high right now, but the internet has a really short memory. Let me get word out about the new project while Stardew Valley is still fresh in everyone's mind rather than having to re-catch their eye from square one."

The worst thing is, Witchbrook, after ALL these years, still has not a single peep about it. They have barely said anything and barely shown ANYTHING for us, and we still don’t know when it will release. Not even a “in 3 years ETA” - Many believe that the game collapsed and won’t be happening 😭

Chucklefish has/had the potential to be very good, but they've utterly mishandled every release they've been handed, and so it's pretty understandable that CA would move on from them.

Chucklefish seems to have some internal issues that has caused some of the games they’ve published to be super delayed or have missing potential. I’m glad CA cut ties with them. I think he dodged a bullet.
