@@thatguy4076 to the fact that this movie is a stop motion and you can't really tell and the fact it's scary but not too frightening, its difficult enough for adults/teenagers to watch and still find it enjoyable and maybe a little bit unsettling but not too scary were a kid will be scared for years
I'm glad you spoke more kindly about the parents. Viewers often forget that they moved across the country, and are taking a risk with a new business venture. Since Coraline is an only child, it's hard for her; those she's closest to aren't giving her as much attention as before. I adore this movie so much, thank you for discussing it.
I agree. The scene when Coraline refuses to go shopping with her mother (who is trying to make up for being so occupied) and whenever I see the mother’s face my heart breaks. The fact that a stop motion animated mother’s facial expressions pierce my heart every time is a testament to how realistic a increasingly distant relationship with your parents can feel.
As a super busy single mom I related so much to the parents. It sucks when you want to bond but just don't have the time or energy. Then, when you do, kids are bitter. It sucks
i think the snow on the parents' clothes was just supposed to be a visual cue to show the viewers how the other world is specifically meant to affect children. like even the most obvious of "proof" will go unnoticed by adults, even if they lived it. kind of like pennywise's whole deal in a way? that's just how i interpreted it
I think it also might be how only children can see the true effects of the Beldam. When Coraline asks about the snow on their clothes, it melts and visibly dampens their clothes. But when her mom asks, "What has gotten into you?" It's shot from the parents' perspective, where we see the clothes are perfectly dry. This probably happens because the Beldam only wants to eat the children and not the parents, and she only kidnaps the parents so that Coraline has no one to turn to.
About your “snow on the parents question”, I always assumed it was because they’re adults, the beldam’s (other mother) target is the children so only children are fully aware of what happens, making the snow and other effects of her magic invisible for the parents. Kind of similar to how the adults can’t hear the jingle bell in Polar Express because they don’t believe in Santa but the kids can.
While Pixar movies do a great job of introducing kids to mature themes and emotions, I think Coraline does an amazing job of introducing kids (and adults) to art analysis, critical thinking, and layers of meaning, not to mention the otherworldly vibe that can only be achieved with stop motion. There’s a reason why so many young filmmakers/media critics cite this movie as their first love.
Your voice is so perfect for this type of content, not to mention that you actually know what youre talking about. Love the change from your regular content and I hope you get the recognition you deserve cuz this was an excellent video!!
Your empathy towards her parents is so great, because their relationship makes me so sad😭 when the other mother turns her parents into voodoo dolls I literally cry every time. My appreciation for my parents are amplified every time
Honestly as someone who watched the movie as a child and read the book way later I'm so glad they put wybie in because watching coraline go through everything alone like the books would've been way more terrifying. The scene with the father when he tries to make coraline stay in the books is way worse than the movie and is legit one of the most unsettling and scary scenes. I really recommend the book! The channel Down to Sleep did a read aloud/audiobook with rain sounds of it and its honestly amazing! really puts you in the mood
Coraline is such a good movie! I watched it all the time during my childhood, and it's still amazing! Paranorman is also extremly good. In my opinion, stop-motion animation and other animation is FAR more impressive then other media. They spend so much time on everything. The characters, the music, the cinematogrophy, the lighting... It's all so impressive!
@@1ovejuls IT'S SO GOOD! I also love how the big brother of Norman's friend turns out to be gay, and that the throwaway gag isn't "haha! he's gay", but instead "haha! The sister has tried all day and night to flirt with him when she never had a chance" I just really like that. And that it's seen as something normal, because it is. And I just love the whole concept of the film.
aaron this video is top tier. flawless analysis and in-depth review of the movie, but also HILARIOUS aaron moments throughout. you are funny and goofy and silly and you didn't just throw that all out the window to make a ~serious film analysis and review~ for your ~very serious solo channel~. this video (and your velma video) are super funny and deserve the hype they get and more. i hope you continue doing awesome things. i bet you will.
5:51 I’m really glad you brought up the point about the parents. As someone who grew up in almost the exact same situation as Coraline, I really related to how she was so frustrated and lonely but still cared for them more than anything. Watching reviews where people just went in on the parents always bothered me for a reason I couldn’t quite place but you explained it perfectly.
I dont know know if someone pointed this out already but there was a tiny foreshadowing detail that I absolutely loved from April and Miriam! When april was giving coraline her tea reading and miriam was saying false information, she said to april ¨Oh gimme that cup april!, your eyes are going.¨ Then april said to miriam ¨My eyes??, your blind as a bat!¨ Then it leads to a scene where coraline had to get one the eyes of the children in the monster miriam and aprils hands, then shown of the dogs being bats like creatures hanging on the ceiling. Then coraline had to spam her flashlight on them to get there attention to intentionally attack coraline but instead since they have bad eyes they attacked miriam and april instead. Thats my detail!
OMG! I LOVE this. I love learning more about my favorite movie, even after all these years. I’m 30 now, and have always been into creepy or weird things/movies and my mom was super supportive. When the movie came out, she borrowed a bootleg DVD from a friend so I can see it lol. Been obsessed ever since
the music, the scenory and the art of this movie touches my heart, like you said it's an adventure, it's like a POV of a child who goes out and explores the gardens, houses and etc while their parents are at home working 24/7 not being able to satisfy the curiosity of their childs mind, and so she makes this other world up in her head where everything is better, i love this movie and will never stop loving it
Okay, but why has this become a new comfort video for me to watch now 🤧 also I thought I’d mention that I read somewhere that the last part where the cat disappears is something to do with portals that the cat has access to. It’s mentioned throughout the book apparently so yeah, kinda glad about that one
I had nightmares for months after I first saw Coraline as a kid. I tried to watch it three more times over the next few years and never got past the fear. Seeing it talked about in an almost loving way has shifted my perspective. very cool video
It seems like you really did enjoy the movie, even if you thought it was scary. If not, you may have not even watched this video. Maybe this new perspective will make it not too frightening if/when you decide to watch it again someday.
as someone who has read the book and watched the movie multiple times the snow on the parents clothes still confuses me 💀 i think its meant to show that maybe everything that had happened was coralines imagination but i think the beldam has so much more control over the real world than we think. it could also be that the way the beldam affects adults is very different from what she does to children condsidering that all her previous victims have all been kids. at the end of the day everyone has their own interpertation of it but this video was so well done !! i found you through your velma video and i was so excited when i saw that you made a video about coraline, i love this movie so much im so happy that more people are giving it the recongnition it deserves !!
I LOVE this movie. I didn’t find out it was set in Ashland, Oregon until I moved there! To me that last scene with the parents and the snow always felt like a moment meant to make us question how much of the story was created my Coraline in her journey to better appreciate what she has and grow up a little. Similarly to the cat teleporting in the very last scene, it makes us question where we are and what was “real” all along. The scene with the snow makes us think it could have all been fabricated by Coraline. But then the scene with the cat makes us feel like it was all real again. And that it’s not over. I know it’s not a big conspiracy theory, but that’s how I always interpreted it.
Coraline has been my favourite film for 14 years now, it’s been the backbone of my childhood and inspiration of my art all the way through school, i could watch it ten times in one day and never get bored of it, I definitely agree with you in terms of how ppl give me weird looks when I say this is my favourite film just because it isn’t live action and said to be creepy , but stop motion is really in a league of its own, the weirdness and uniqueness of this film is what makes it my comfort film
Coraline is my most-watched movie and my comfort movie too! I’ve always struggled to verbalize exactly why to other people, but you hit the nail on the head! The atmosphere and tone just speak to my specific aesthetic taste so perfectly. I LOVE gloomy. I love rainy days, cloudy days, and foggy days, because the darkness and gloominess are cozy to me. I love the sense of the uncanny and odd woven in among all the beauty; that’s how I like my art. Not just straight happiness and prettiness, like a lot of Disney movies. I like when uncanny and darkness is woven into it. Great video!
I saw Coraline a few days ago and I can’t get it out of my brain nor find any articles that dissect this story in a way that satisfies me, there’s so much to it, Reddit has been the only solace; and this video.
"The tone of a movie doesn't need to be light in order to find comfort in it." This is so true. One of my comfort movies is "The Shining". Perfect for shut in days; _especially_ in winter.
I watched this film on repeat when it came out and its honestly been instrumental in creating my personality (this and treasure planet). I've even written two essays for university on how Coraline is a top tier example of a book to film adaptation that just works. I will never stop talking about how the staff, from character to set design to lighting, and Henry Selick had such clear love and adoration for the source material that it really comes across in every frame of this film. Every change from the book to the film just makes sense. They don't feel superficial or an unnecessary attempt to put your own stamp on someone else's work - they flow into the story. The introduction of the film is an addition to the original source material that I consider a true stroke of genius. It immediately sets the tone for the story as well as as foreshadowing a whole bunch of things. Also I just truly think the character and set design for this film are beyond amazing and do more than half the work in creating what we consider to be "Coraline". The actual story behind Neil and Henry looking into making the Coraline film and that whole process is actually really fascinating as well.
Agree about rewatching movies. I don't often do that but Coroline, Spirited Away (basically any Ghibli, honestly) and Ratatouille are the movies that turn me into into a hypocrite. They're my comfort ones and could watch them on repeat
wow. i used to be in love with this movie when i was about 12 y/o. i would watch it every single day ESPECIALLY when it was stormy outside. as one of the biggest fans of this movie, i can say that this video is a masterpiece. thank you for creating this analysis. such a beautiful movie & this video reignited my love for it :')
i really have to recommend laika's work as a whole. their entire stop motion career is so solid. the attention to detail thats in this movie is in all of their other movies too! i really wish people talked about their other movies more
aaron this is so impressive & inspiring . i’ve been thinking about making videos like this and this video has completely motivated me to do so , i love your intro & the edits & how much effort you put into this 🥲 so incredibly inspiring . thank you for posting this , im so proud of you 😢❤❤❤❤
coraline is such an amaizing movie, the fact that the movie was done a few years later of the book coming out is amazing and, i don't remeber if a was scared of it as a kid but probably yes, but i think its that combinacion of stop motion and kinda horror that makes it so unique, it has always been my go to watch movie on rainy days and it is defenitly my comfort movie too ! and will always be i think also i want to add that the scene of the gloves on the store is a good break for the movie stress and also the scene after, the one in the care ride back home is such a important point i feel and its what gives coraline the courage to finally comit to the other world kinda i think, and the soundrtrack on that scene its just a masterpiece !
This movies goes into my greatest of all time list. You remember the first time you watch it. The time and detail put into the still motion. The adventure, the immersion, even the warmth. The movie is the perfect comfort movie. It’s so special.
ooh so on little details i noticed that when coraline first finds the mice and follows, if you look outside her round bedroom window you see the moon is swirling, possibly to show that the portal to the other world has been opened. it was a quick shot but one of my favourite hints that something magical was about to happen.
no like this is 100% my comfort movie, too. i go through phases of watching it multiple times a week. i can quote the whole thing word for word. i listen to the soundtrack all the time. it's just that good.
I’m really enjoying this style of content. It’s really entertaining to hear about movies or shows you like or hate and hear you’re perspective on them and kinda relate to it in different ways. I really love these kind of videos. Thank you for the great content keep it up!!🥰🥰
I can't think of another film that has so many theories and mystery to it than Coraline. It's amazing how much detail the creators put in the foreground and background of this movie!
Little details that are also in coraline: 1. Time: 2:26 according to graphology, aka the analysis of patterns that occur in handwriting, the Welcome home cake the o in the word ‘home’ is a double loop on a lowercase “o” means the person must be lying. There's only one double loop in the message on the cake, meaning Coraline is welcome, but she is not really home. 2. Time: 11:05 Near the end of the film, Coraline's father is seen reenacting the famous face-hugger scene from Alien (1979) using Coraline's stuffed squid 3. The two members the 'Ranft Bros. Moving Company' that moves Coraline's family into their home, are named for brothers Jerome Ranft and Jerome Randt. Both brothers did work on The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) with Director Henry Selick. The mover at the front door (who is given the $1.00 tip) is modeled after Joe Ranft. 4. Time: 4:26 The sweater the other mother makes Coraline is a reference to the story Wibey tells Coraline about falling into the well and seeing "a sky full of stars in the middle of the day". Coraline is in a situation that is seemingly plain as day, yet her sweater represents being trapped in a situation much like being trapped in a well. 5. Time: 12:15 When Coraline returns to the Other World on the second night, she finds the Other Mother cooking "dinner-breakfast". The Other Mother cracks an egg, and the yolk is the head of Jack Skellington from the Nightmare Before Christmas, which Henry Sellick also directed.
So many of my friends describe Coraline as creepy and scary, but my brain just can’t view it that way. It’s always been too wonderful and beautiful for me to be scared of it. Its eerie moments are intricately woven into the experience as a whole. The spookiness just adds to the whimsical nature of it, without making it truly scary.
Coraline is an incredible movie and the writers put so much effort into it. I feel like it should have more recognition and credit because it was incredibly made.
I am in love with this movie. It was never creepy to me. Also years ago, my uncle saw me watching it and told me that one of his friends was a part of making it:)
Dude I’m so glad you did a video on coraline. The first time I saw it in theaters as a child I was terrified and had to leave the theater. Now it’s one of my comfort movies too :)
I watch this movie every time it rains as well! People probably will always be confused as to why it is, but it has always been a comfort 🥹. That’s amazing you have a doll!! since 11 or 12, I have always watched this movie to feel a sense of peace!✨thank you for this video!!
Aaron please do more vids like this. You’re 100% right, this is also my comfort film, this is my twilight 😂. Interestingly enough both twilight and Coraline have foggy environments and dark fantasy elements. It’s perfect haunting and my go to rainy day film. I loved this video!
YOURE SO BASED!!! support animation especially stop motion! as an animation student minoring in production design i get so hype when people appreciate animation and it's technicalities :D
Me and my brother genuinely would watch this about once a week for YEARS. I rewatched it very recently for the first time in a while and I can still quote it almost word for word. This movie is what made me really appreciate the art of cinema for the first time.
I just thought that it was meant to be snowing outside when the parents came back because we already see that it's cold out. I assumed it was an early spring snow and then when the garden party comes around it's like one of the first nice days of the year lol
I remember watching this movie at the theater as a child. Almost everyone parents got out with their kids before the end. My grandmother wanted to go too, but I wouldn’t. Best movie ever!
I loveee coralline, it’s my comfort movie as well. Agreed with everythingggg it really is so soothing and also did not notice that little Bobinsky-Chernobyl gem. Great humor and editing too
i am so glad i found this video i love Coraline so much & this is the first video i’ve seen that doesn’t shit on the parents. absolute 10/10 would love a part two
I love this movie, it’s also my comfort movie, I watch it every night before i go to sleep and I can quote it from start to finish and it still feels like I’m watching it for the first time…
Omg those moments toward the end, bravo sir! I love Coraline too!!❤ I never noticed why Bobinski’s skin blue. And the lightning hand. I’m gonna watch it again.
After watching this video I decided to go and re-watch the movie and I'm super excited because I think I have a theory now which explains why it's subtly insinuated at the very end of the film that Coraline (or a future child who is to live in the pink palace) is still in danger from the Beldam. It's likely already an existing theory and it's quite long too (or at least my comment here is lol) but it's super interesting nonetheless and something I've never caught on to before despite my seeing this film about 10 times. So, at the beginning of the film when Coraline first meets Wybie, he talks to her about "the secret well". His exact words are "...if you fell to the bottom and looked up, you'd see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day". What I personally think this line implies is that the secret well is actually a portal to the other mother's (Beldam's) realm - the other side; the other side is always only ever existing in a perpetual loop of night - it's never daytime, therefore making Wybie's quote make sense as it essentially notes to the idea that if you fall down the well, because it's so endlessly deep, you'll fall into a land where it is night and where one can see stars, even if it is daytime in reality. The other realm is also often conveyed through metaphors in the dialogue as well as the actual visuals of the film (think back to the scene where Coraline and the black cat are trying to walk away from the other realm/side but fail and only "walk around the world" and flip back to the beginning again) as being essentially the opposite side of reality - it's the black to the white, or the opposite end of the same tunnel, exactly like the secret well (it's also interesting to note here that the secret well is not only covered and guarded by mud in a similar way to how the small door is covered with wallpaper, and therefore making another parallel, but also has a ring of mushrooms around its entrance, which I believe are called fairy rings. If you google 'fairy ring' it will literally tell you that fairy rings in some folklore tales are said to be portals to other realms...). So, with the idea that the secret well from the beginning of the film is another portal to the other mother's nighttime realm being blatantly obvious given all the points above as well as others I may have missed, it makes perfect sense as to why Coraline is still not safe even at the end of the film; it's because she very disastrously "hides" the key to the small door/the other realm as well as the other mother's detached hand IN THE WELL. In other words, she unknowingly transports the key and the still sentient and malicious hand directly back to the other mother's realm, making her totally capable of retrieving said items from her own realm and beginning her horrid kidnapping loop again to either Coraline or another child in the distant future. Also, another interesting thing to note is that when Coraline and Wybie throw the key and the hand down the well wrapped in the blanket, we get a shot of the well and it's textures and entire structure looks almost IDENTICAL to the small door's tunnel; it has the same slightly blue-toned colour though a little more unsaturated and has the same rippled fabric texture only in the form of stones, since it's a well. Furthermore at the end of the film, and as you showed in your video, the black cat hops onto a wooden sign at the very end and walks across it only to disappear once it passes behind the top part of the wooden fence, which could be seen as yet another metaphor or implication that the general idea of the end of film is that the other realm is still in existence and is therefore a danger, due to it having the key from the well by Coraline, and that, now being in possession of the key again, the other mother can now use it on the small door from her side. Anyway, you probably picked up on this already since it's not a terribly hidden secret in the film but I was super excited after re-watching the film that I just had to write this anyway. Admittedly I never caught on to this as a child when I first watched it. It's so cool to watch back on childhood favorites and catch things you never spotted before.
I first watched it around when it came out when I was 5, which traumatized me. Then I watched it when I was around 11 and fell in love with it, although it still creeped me out. Now as a young adult I still love the animation, the psychedelic style, and the characters. I also like the book. Imo it’s scarier to me than a majority of horror movie nowadays.
I totally love this movie. I first watched it about two years ago, at a time where my depression was at an all time high and Corline just fascinated me and made me relax for the first time in months. I personally find comfort in creepy movies, so I for sure get why you like this movie so much. People often just brush it off as a weird kids movie, but it really is so much more than that. Really enjoyed the video :)
i love the way you expressed your love for this movie. i watched this movie when i was about ten and i would pause it every now and then and go cry then come back and watch more cause i was scared. i loved it since then. as i grew up i only came to appreciate it more and the intricacy of the animation inspires me and opens my eyes to the fact that so much feelings, wonder, and thoughtfulness CAN be expressed in just one movie. the amazing animation. the nostalgia from every watch. it all has the biggest place in my heart. im so glad you made this video. i love the little underrated scenes you included and the way you actually see the parent's struggle! finally someone said it. love your voice too, its just as calming as the scenes. i really hate rewatching stuff for the same reason, but whenever i feel like its right and wanting to reconnect with myself i play coraline. its like that one song that never gets old. i reaally love the way you express your passion for this movie, not just analyzing it like some bot you know? and you bring our attention to the things that you notice that i dont see anyone else talk about. whats more, its all stuff ive watched but you telling ur perspective makes me feel like i just went into ur eyes and watched it! thank you aaron, love the videos and your passion for all things art
This is my comfort movie as well. I also thought that the parents couldn’t tell because the beldame is able change her world making it to where no adults understand what the kids mean. That’s why the twin sisters family just says they ran away because the beldame has the power to manipulate then into thinking they are going crazy. It can also explain why the cat can travel at the end because the beldame has some sort of control
as someone whose early life was heavily steeped in discomfort, I find solace in 'unlikely media' so I totally get where you're coming from with that :)
you've captured my feelings for coraline perfectly like every single little part of this movie is fucking insane, i'm so glad to hear someone else appreciating the smallest details as much as me. banger video as usual!!!
Okay I agree one hundred percent! This is my comfort movie and part of my top five favorite films. Although the story is unsettling I find comfort in the animation.
I also wanted to add that our perspectives change towards the parents depending on where we are at in life. As a kid, I thought the parents were mean but as an adult I understand where her parents were coming from.
love seeing more serious side of you, even tho i love you goofing off with jo, i always welcome analysis on movies i already know are good to reconfirm my opinion ✨️😌
