Why Coraline Is So Creepy

Halloween season is here so let's talk about one of our favorite scary movies.
Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/Subscrib...
Coraline might technically be a ‘kids movie,’ but that doesn’t make it any less scary. The stop-motion animated flick was inspired by Neil Gaiman’s 2002 book of the same name. Up to that point in his career, Gaiman had made a habit of treading in the realm of horror and fantasy. His work geared specifically towards adults, but Coraline was his first attempt to craft something with a younger audience in mind.
Despite his younger target audience, Gaiman didn’t shy away from some truly horrifying subject matter. That subject matter was expertly captured by filmmaker Henry Selick. Selick was actually Gaiman’s first choice to direct the film, as he’d been a fan of Selick’s other works: ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ and ‘James and the Giant Peach.’
Selick’s style doesn’t shy away from its creepier tendencies - a perfect fit for Gaiman’s novel. Anyone who’s seen one of his films can attest to that. His stop motion animation is simultaneously charming and unsettling. His character models are slightly exaggerated and his monsters are the stuff of genuine nightmares. It’s also in the way his scenes are lit. It’s not bright or chipper. There are shadows and dynamic lighting to emphasize just how unsettling the film’s subject matter is.
Beyond the disturbing visuals, it’s the subject matter itself. Coraline’s genuine fear for her life, the fear that her ‘Other Mother’ will sew buttons onto her eyes. There’s some heavy stuff here that’s sure to give kids nightmares. Let’s take a closer look to determine why Coraline is so effective in its creepiness.

This is genuinely one of the most terrifying movies I’ve ever seen, like yeah horror movies are scary but they’re in your face scary. Coraline is more subtle, a soul eating monster disguised as a mother giving a sad child all the love and attention she wants while she feeds off her is genuinely so terrifying especially as a kid, I didn’t trust my mom for weeks after watching it

Which actually makes the most sense because: Why would TOM lock Coraline away with the ghost children who allegedly had info that would help her? Why would Ms S and Ms F hide the green stone in a sweet jar of all places? Why didn't TOM kill the cat if he could help Coraline escape? How did Wybie know when and where to help Coraline at the end? How come everything is blooming and colourful by the end yet there's more contextual clues this happened over a few days not months, so how can the quality of the garden change so rapidly? I call bs on Coraline escaping by the few theory videos I've watched.

Why do I feel like she's related to pennywise in a way, but instead of being the child's fear, it takes the form of what the child really wants. Which, in this case is a loving, caring mother. In a way it makes sense, I mean, pennywise was birthed as an alien creature and took in fear as a power source. The other mother could be the same thing but taking in a source of envy from Coraline, her wants and innermost dreams, stuff like that. I'm just spit balling here but it makes sense if you think about it...
@snazzy_clock
@snazzy_clock 4 года назад
@@unknxwnprxdigy366 You're right on one thing. The Beldam takes form of a loving, caring mother to lure the children in. She shows them 'love' by giving them whatever they want. If any of her 'creations' try to warn Coraline, she shuts them up. Listen to the Other Father's song. Or Sirens of The Sea. Even when she's in the cellar. She sews buttons into the children's eyes to keep them in her world so she can eat them. "You know that I love you." And, despite herself, Coraline nodded. It was true: the other mother loved her. But she loved Coraline as a miser loves money, or a dragon loves its gold.

Therefore Coraline is welcome, but she is not home. (Also this is not my theory, someone else discovered it before me, so I do not take credit for this)

As a kid I felt terrified watching it. When I re-watched it again a few times in adult age (because it's one of my faves!) I sensed a different kind of horror in the movie. I used to be scared and jumpy of Beldam and the things she created, but now the horror is witnessing how lonely the other world is! The atmosphere of that world is really dreading, and whatever in there is not real but just a fatamorgana, which only makes me feel uneasy when I think deeper of it. It's like feeling that world's vulnerability, that it could really crush in just a seconds when no real thing is there, except for The Other Mother, which is an otherworld entity herself. It's like feeling the world's emptiness and that there's nothing you can really do because you don't really belong there.
