Why corporate diversity programs fail & what to do instead | Joan C. Williams | TEDxMileHigh

In the wake of George Floyd’s death, companies are finally feeling the pressure to do something about diversity, equity, and inclusion. We’ve spent over $1 billion on our diversity efforts with remarkably little to show for it. Why? The basic tools of the diversity-industrial complex haven’t worked. In this persuasive talk, Joan C. Williams explains a better, data-driven approach to interrupt bias at work. Over the past 25 years, Joan C. Williams has played a central role in reshaping the conversation about work, gender, and class. She is a Distinguished Professor of Law, Hastings Foundation Chair, and Founding Director of the Center for WorkLife Law at the University of California, Hastings Law. She is one of the 10 most cited scholars in her field and is the author or co-author of 11 books including “What Works for Women at Work” and “White Working Class.” She developed “bias interrupters,” an evidence-based metrics-driven approach to eradicating implicit bias. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I'm AfroAmerican and I believe businesses should go by skills and knowledge instead of this diversity/inclusion thing. I get it but the thing is in this era no matter what your racial background is you can learn any skill you want and use those skills to improve your life. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

@@luv_larain7637 It's reality not ideal. Many companies do practice this and has for a long time. Name some companies that don't. There are some groups of people that stick to their own but that is not the majority of companies. Skills and knowledge is the only things most companies look for, they don't care about anything else. Anything else besides those two things are no benefit for a company. You are saying what you think not what you know.
@JimyRoze

Absolutely correct. If we make everything about race or other identification categories we lose sight of the actual issues. We all are pointing at other people or "the system" and saying its their fault I can't get a job. In reality we need to look at ourselves and ask "what can I do to make myself better?" This small change in behavior would help a great deal.

Snake oil. 2 men were sitting in a Starbucks not ordering anything yet no one bothered them. One of them eventually walked up to the counter to request the password for the bathroom. The attendant explained the toilets were for paying customers only. not for "White customers" only. The 2 gentleman started to get irate and threatening, they were asked to leave and then told the police would be called. Still they would not leave and so the police were called. It made headlines in every newspaper in the world, this could only be an example of racism. Everyone deserves a chance for employment in any job. However, companies should only retain and invest in employees who are competent at their given job. The company I work for is clearly employing people to fill the gaps in their diversity program, regardless of their competence for that specific role. I've seen many people plucked from the bottom and given managerial roles who have no knowledge of that position and fail consistently. My company is seeking to have all the people on the social strata just to make itself look good to the public. Competence, skill, experience and knowledge of any job is the only way to succeed. Equal opportunity, absolutely. However, equality of outcome is proving disastrous and totally cost ineffective.

There could be a legitimate business reason for selecting he candidate with the hobbies of a higher class; e.g., if the clientele is high class. Conversely, the lower class candidate might be a better fit if the clientele is of a lower class. @Mission Money Blog I mean, it could be just one divorce, it doesn't need to be many. Not just that, but saying "let's trade" makes no sense, they're not equal. Motherhood bias for work makes sense, when you go on mat leave you aren't in the job for an extended period of time meaning you could have forgot how some things work at your job. You most likely have reduced your productivity since you have been absent and it's not easy to get back into the flow of things without practicing which will take a bit. And on top of that, you may realize that you like raising your kids more than you like your job or the money coming from it. Though I think it's disingenuous to say it's a "motherhood" bias when in reality it's a parenteral leave bias which on average women take more than men and in some places paternity isn't offered and dual parental leave also isn't offered.

I'd like to see some peer reviewed research on this information, not just anecdotes as it seems like "the exact same feelings" isn't actually accurate. Not just that but the maternal wall makes sense in a business situation. If someone has been away for a month or even longer(the case in most countries) they're going to have missed a lot of what happened and the business and will not only need to catchup but also re-learn things that they had done before. I'd also like to know if it is self-reported as that can be very biased in many ways. Someone may see something as being biased against them because of their group when in reality it could be just them as an individual and what they did. Or in the case of the maternal wall, it could be a valid bias. There's many ways some of these anecdotes could be explained that isn't necessarily bias because of the group that the person is in. For example for the female engineer, she may have said it in an unpleasant and demeaning way to show that the person that made the error is beneath her which could have lead the entire department to obviously not like how she acted. There's 2 sides to every story and people don't always tell the truth. Yes, there is true bias in a lot of companies against some people, but I don't think it is the majority of people nor the majority of companies. And the things you talked about at the end where you talked about ways to improve reviews makes sense because it was just advice to help in general, not necessarily things that were because those people were part of that group. For example the partner thing, that wouldn't be good to do to any person and I'm glad it was fixed for women, hopefully that was happening to as little people as possible. And as for the leadership problem, it might have been fixed by just adding a mandatory field to the form that talks about leadership, which might not actually fix the problem, it might just appear to fix the problem.

You're bad people, especially if you're white, cis male', but from a place of 'Bias costs your company money. You should enhance diversity because that makes your business more successful'. The first leads to corporations simpering for empathy points on social media and no changes being made. The second leads to (gradual) change because 'Hey, you should try this because it gives you a competitive advantage' is the language that businesses speak.

I disagree, competence comes before race and gender. My employer is on a hiring spree for POC and its been an amazing problem. By not putting competence at the fore front, they pull in people with poor attitudes, zero work ethic, completely unprofessional, stealing time saying their working when their 30 min late and the list just grows more everyday. Behavior that I would be fired for. @@TheTruth24Seven yes, that was my point exactly. All the people in the comments saying "just hire the best person for the job" did not watch the video. Its ABOUT hiring the person with the right skills for the job and implementing tools to ensure that the engrained biases of managers don't get in the way of that.

Polo requires more skill. Playing a sport atop a horse is nothing to sneeze at. Country singing nowadays is very lucrative unless the person is a terrible singer or musician. Another thing. I’m a woman in the workplace. I observed that women in general are out sick much more often than men, and I don’t mean family sick leave. I mean for their own illnesses: migraines, etc. in fact, I kept the data for my own curiosity over 6 months. Women stay home sick (or “sick”) more often than men. Also, the Harvard Business Review has a great article about DEI. DEI is having the opposite effect DEI intends. People will remain silent to avoid all conflict, but DEI actually creates animosity, and with each added DEI idea or exposure to DEI, that animosity grows. Forcing this on companies, employees, and execs is having diminishing returns. Lastly, as a Hispanic woman, I see that DEI professionals have chosen to ignore any and all differences between cultural groups and demographics. There are actual non-discriminatory reasons why “minorities” might not be as represented in a field or an area of study which have nothing to do with discrimination. While my idea may not be acceptable to DEI experts, who choose to view all groups and individuals as alike and/or the same, that’s not the reality.

Unfortunately, it appears you seem to have a more binocular view of diversity, and it doesn't feel like you see everything around you. What you are saying resonates partially, and I believe you're going down the right path, but you are only seeing the tree leaves because that is what you are focused on. There are flowers, animals, water, and other plants, but you're going to need to expand your line of site so that you can more fully understand what is happening in this generation, and not just the generation of the 1970s. You (as we all do), have a strong bias, and it you've made it very clear. However, if you want to make progress and real improvement, you might think about stepping back from the funnel, and taking a more holistic view of today's society.

Equal opportunity of all Employ roles based on competence regardless of race and gender. Regarding the error in a calculation at work this should have been taken seriously. t's nothing more than racial quotas. They just destroyed the schools for the academically gifted in NYC because certain "groups" didn't make the grade. So, rather than encourage the "groups' to study harder (like the Asian students do), they eliminated the entry qualifications in favor of a lottery system. They in effect numbed down the elite schools. I don't know what other country in the world would do such a self defeating thing, particularly in light of the fact that the USA rates 22nd in the world when it comes to math and science. Anyway, it was done to meet racial quotas. So much with a color blind, merit based society.
