I read about them probably 15 years ago. The article said everything in the store is priced 17% over their price, they pay better than other retailers, wall street is always after them to cut labor costs, they often buy a truckload of product other companies cancelled the order on, which lets them buy cheaper, the CEO can often be found working in a store, and his contract is only 3 pages- not the typical hundreds.

I work at Costco and love it. One thing that is touched on at the end of the video to expand on... We don't lose people. Ok we do, but Costco's employee retention rate is insane. They give you inexpensive high quality healthcare so that you will use it and stay healthy. They pay you well, and keep their hours reasonable so that you can have a life outside work. If you are constantly losing and replacing people your business suffers greatly.. Mistakes, customer service, efficiency. It is a whole unique business model and corporate culture. It's large scale wholesale but unlike most cash and carry businesses they cater heavily towards consumers rather than mainly towards businesses _but_ they still maintain a large clientele of businesses. They manage to mix both bulk wholesale and smaller selections as well. Unlike most retailiers they also maintain great pay and benefits towards employees which leads to fierce competition for any openings, which gives you the pick of the litter for employees, and they also try to keep the same employees which leads to loyalty. They also care about customers and earn their loyalty with things like their cafeteria selling the same foods for the same price and not cutting quality. That's a small idea that has huge impacts: i know quiet a few small business owners who were dirt poor at one point, in some cases recent immigrants, who had nothing and couldnt afford food and sometimes didn't have cooking facilities to prepare fresh cheap meals and Costco cafeterias were a cheap ready source of somewhat healthy filling food. When they went on to open B&B's, gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants and similar businesses they loved Costco and bought all their products there. Immigrants who moved back home brought back a love of Costco and that lead to a demand for stores back home. I even heard a story of a guy who loved Costco when he was studying in the US that when he moved back home and became wealthier he convinced them to open a store up and helped manage it in his home country, which was the first store there. Many entrepreneurs have also copied their businesses models of customer/employee loyalty over blind profits to great effect.

I love Costo. I have the $120 yearly membership because I bought an amazing couch that cost $1800 that everywhere else was selling for $3000-3500. The guy at the checkout told me to upgrade my membership first so that the money I got back from the couch purchase would pay for the additional cost of the membership fee and then some (the upgrade wasn’t $60, it was prorated for the rest of the year). The people there actively look out for the members. Great quality, great people, great prices... how can you not like it?
@SWLinPHX
@SWLinPHX 4 года назад
Glenn Millam: That’s something they do to try and drive up more expensive memberships but it’s not out of the goodness of their heart. One year I bought a lot of big ticket items from there like a large screen TV so I ended up spending a lot and I qualified so I agreed to let them sign me up at the register. But I kept record and I did not make enough at the end of the year back to justify the double cost of the executive membership. You have to buy at least $3000 worth of stuff a year for the 2% you get back on the executive membership to pay off. I ended up going back to the Gold Star membership at $60 a year. However I do recommend using the Costco Visa which costs nothing a year and gives you 2% back on everything you buy at Costco and Costco.com. It also gives you back 4% on gasoline and 3% back on anything having to do with travel or transportation or food and dining. Now if you do spend more than $3000 a year at Costco then I recommend you use both the executive membership and the Costco visa and get 4% back on every Costco or Costco.com purchase!

If you only stay at a $12/h job for years, then it is your own fault. I started at 10.50 per hour and living in a dorm. 5 months later, I moved to make $11/h but with higher earnings potential with over time and shared a house with 1 other person and was still able to save money. A year after that, I moved to another state to make $12/h but with great potential for even more money due to the companies many opportunities and much better benefits with 401k and even better insurance and other yearly bonuses. After 8 months, I took a Lead position making $15.90 / h. I have shared a house with 3-4 others for the last 1.5 years and now I am transferring to another job in the company which pays a little less but has even better benefits and better raises. Within a year of starting in this new position I will be at $17/h, not including the option to become a Lead there also. Within 5 years of starting this journey, I will be at $20 per hour with great overtime options, multi-thousand dollar yearly bonuses, great 401k and cheap insurance and other benefits. All because I worked for it and made my way there instead of being entitled. I am now in the lower middle class and by the end of 2020, I will be in the solid middle class, making $50-60k per year and by the end of 2021, guaranteed making $60-80k with the option to move to a lower cost state and owning a house

For regular employees who are not management the pay for top rate is $25.25 an hour, this is based on how long you've worked there for and I will get it in March which will have taken me 5.5 years as a part time employee, this goes up by a dollar or so if you are in a high skilled department and there are 50 cent raises each year for costing of living, for maternity leave they top up the employees salary to 100% for an entire year I believe instead of the regular 70%, I could go on but you get the point, overall it is an amazing company and if you work hard enough and get promoted you can definitely be making 100k a year after a decade or so. I have 4 years of front end experience like cashiering/ carts/ bagging, etc which I'll definitely mention during my interview. I'm hoping they stick me on carts or front end. @brunellecooper
@brunellecooper 4 года назад
@@Irraptured it depends on how long the store has been around for because that would mean there are people with higher seniority. Transfers are almost always based off of seniority not how hard someone works but as a seasonal there have been cases where they do take them on afterwards. I would apply to every position there is and make sure to tell them you want to stay after your contract is done. If you do get in part time but not to a department you like it may take some time to get out (maybe a year or so) but it's worth it. I've never worked in the food court and most people don't like it but the time goes by much faster these because you are so busy. Overall I'd say just work hard, tell them you want to stay and apply to everything. If they don't bring you back after your season is done keep applying to the warehouse, you'll have a better chance at getting a permanent position when they are hiring because you've worked there before, I have seen that happen as well

The first time I went in this store and tried to exit, I literally walked around the entire floor, not once, but twice, as I passed by the escalator once without even seeing it, as it is obscured by a partition, the only escalator which leads back to the street level outside. Sure, there is another exit, but that exit leads to an upper floor parking lot--not good for pedestrians who walked into the store instead of driving there. I wonder if this layout has more to do with designing the floor plan to "encourage" customers to spend more time in the store than they might have originally planned or for theft deterrence purposes, or for both.

I was initially very skeptical of paying a membership fee to shop. But after watching their prices for a year or so it was easy to see that I would save much more than $60 a year. I became a member & have never looked back. I became an Executive Member about 7 years ago when Customer Service advised me that we were spending more than $3,000 a year and we would recover our full membership fee if we upgraded to Executive. I have never paid a penny for membership fees since and have enjoyed the lowest possible prices on all of the items we buy there. Many common products from toothpaste to cereals to tablets typically have 5 to 20 choices in traditional or online stores. Costco typically has 1 or 2 choices. Yet, over the years, after much research I find that the Costco buyers make excellent decisions as to which product they determine will be sold at Costco. Almost always they choose items that are positively reviewed, closer to the middle or top of the product line and always represent good value. Might not be your favorite brand or have exactly the features you prefer but it will consistently be a quality product at the lowest possible price.

How Costco succeeds: 1. Membership program is its business model, which attracts and retains customers because prices are ridiculously low 2. Few selections eliminates paradox of choice and gives Costco immense negotiation power, therefore allowing it to keep prices low 3. That begins part about costo having a loyal customer. That’s me, I check Costco first before checking others. Not because I feel like I owe it to my membership, but because I value everything they stand for. The return policy is probably one of the best part about them. We’ve been members of Costco since 97 and will never switch.

I would love for it to mean that paying employees is the easy choice for companies to get more productivity out of their workers than the added costs, but if that were actually true than it would be an obvious thing for everybody to do. I think a big part of why Costco is able to pay more and get more productivity out of their employees is influenced by other aspects of their business model, such as the fact that people literally pay money to the company before even buying a single thing, that they sell in bulk in warehouses, or that they have a relatively small selection of products. Things like these dramatically reduce the amount of work that employees at other stores such as Target need to do to just keep a store running: stocking shelves, adjusting prices, ringing up a customer only there to buy a pack of gum and a bottle of conditioner. These things all take up employee time that at Costco would be much more efficiently spent. In comparison, workers at Costco "stock shelves" by loading massive palates onto the floor, manage the prices for 1/10th the number of items (or fewer), and rarely ring up customers spending less than $50 or even $100.

When I was a kid I loved when my mom took me to costco for the samples. I was conditioned to like costco from a young age. Also, costco is inviting with its food court which doesn't require a membership to eat at. You can walk right in the exit. I have family member who work there and they say that almost nobody takes advantage of it anyways. Also, Their return policy is immensely lax. You can reasonably use something like an air mattress and then return even a year down the road almost no questions asked. Costco eats the loss and makes the customer feel important and valued. Other businesses wouldn't accept a return on an air mattress the same day it was purchased if there was evidence the box was opened and the contents removed. They wouldn't touch some return items with a 10 foot pole and have a return clauses of pages on pages of legalese. At costco if its within the ridiculously long time frame and you dont want it you can bring it back.

That's the case with Toys R Us as well. The purchasers over leveraged to gain control, transferred debt to it as a subsidiary, robbed it of its asset (property) and then abandoned its stripped, debt ridden carcass. Leaving thousands without jobs for the benefit of a few shareholders.

Even though I’m a broke college student, I will never cancel my Costco membership. The gas prices alone make up for the cost of the membership fee, and that’s without the low prices for the everyday basics. My classmates think I’m a fool for paying 60 bucks a year for the membership but continue to spend on Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Amazon, and food delivery services. Then they come crawling to me to borrow my card to get gas or buy some stuff, I kindly reject them and laugh at them.
