Moses has been pleading with God for him to forgive Israel of their sins and travel in their midst. During this pleading, he desires to know if he has found grace in God's sight. God says that he has, but Moses, after which Moses requests to see the glory of God (God Himself). God says that Moses cannot do this? Why? In Lesson 134 of our study of Exodus we learn the answer to this question.

He spoke with God face to face in the same chapter. Ex 33:11

The same phrase is used in the passage yes, but it doesn't carry with it the same meaning. In Exodus 33:11, when God spoke to Moses face to face, it carries with it in the Hebrew the meaning of speaking as ones who were close friends: speaking with Moses directly instead of through angels or in a vision/dream. It doesn't necessarily mean that Moses saw God physically, but even if he did, it would be in a form that man could see. However, what Moses asks for in vs. 18-23, is to see God's glory: God in his heavenly form. God says there that you can't see my face and live, for it's too wondrous. So there is not a contradiction between these passages as this is how they were understood by the Hebrews and how we should understand them today. We hope this helps you in your Bible studies.

Jesus said that the pure in heart shall see God does it mean Moses wasn't pure?

When Jesus said that the pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5:8), he was talking about the Resurrection Day and into eternity due to God forgiving someone of their sins [giving them a pure heart]. The pure in heart don't have God appear to them while on this earth, so Moses being unable to see God then had nothing to do with whether or not his heart was pure. However, mankind, while on this earth could not look upon the spiritual nature of God Himself, for the scriptures say it is too brilliant to look at. That is what God is telling Moses here. Thanks for commenting.

This episode is an entire series which covers 164 episodes. We did study about what you're referring to in chapter 24, and invite you to listen to that episode too to see how to harmonize that passage with this one, which literally does say that nobody can see God's face and live (Exodus 33:20). That episode is Lesson 92 in the series and is found at: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1XnQPXEBCCM.html . @@EastEndChurchofChrist What would you think would happen if you put a 100 TB of information into a harddrive with only a 100 GB size, it will overload and fry. I'm wondering if that's why the guy who was carrying the ark of the convenant died when it fell touched him.
