IMO the purpose is none. Its just an unplanned event that increased and diversified in magnitude. That's the reason all yogis vigorously imply the insignificance of the self. The creation of the Universe has everything to do with Yoga. It is the ultimate "....Dance Of The Wu Li Master". To me, creation of Galaxies, Universes, Moons, Planets, Comets and all the Hodgepodge that speckles the skies, is by thought. Who's thought? Without truly knowing, One will just Believe. To Believe, is to Believe in something You don't know....blindly. Science believes they are close to knowing something, but they still do not know 100%. When I was very young (four years old to present day), I thought every child born, a Galaxy or Universe was also created. Sounds silly, this is what I believe.

That in fact, dark energy and dark matter are just roundabout ways of re-entertaining new aether model. That there is no such thing as photons.
