What I heard was that our brain categorized everything into human and non human upon sight, and since our brain can't place the kind of human-looking but not quite human moving or nuanced, it feels a repulsion towards the object.

I dont know for sure, but I heard its cause things like that have a similarity to a corpse, and thus, seems not living and living at the same time. Which further increases the repulsion, of course. Though, I don't remember where I read that, I hope the article reappears

When talking about uncanny valley, they often use the term "spark of life". Like Rhett said, we as humans can actually kinda sense life, and we can't sense life in a robot, no matter how convincingly human they look. Wax museums have the same problem. Statues in a wax museum, no matter how lifelike they look, sit at the bottom of the uncanny valley because they're missing that "spark of life" that we can (for lack of a better word) sense.

And humans each have there own scent. Sense the robot looks human and that he doesn't have a scent the brain takes over and finds it creepy

I think it's the eyes. The reason super lifelike video games aren't in the valley is because the mechanics of the eyes are very intricate.

I have never understood why people feel the need to make robots look human. Robots don't need to look human. That's creepy and weird. And I saw the video with the last robot chick and she/it was talking about how she/it wanted to go to school and start a career and have a family and all that mess and I'm like "what is this? That thing is a robot, it's not even human. it can't think or feel for itself so why would it want to go to school?" What are these people trying to accomplish here by making human-like robots that claim to feel stuff??

One of the biggest reasons people get creeped out by things resembling humans goes back to the uncanny valley you both talked about. It has to do with your level of trust in a thing or person, clowns are a great example of this. When you look at a clown, you recognize it's a human being, the problem is that the bulbous nose, giant feet and face paint makes your brain question that judgement. This puts your brain in the uncanny valley; a suspension between instinctual trust and conscious distrust.

quantum dragon Well clowns are just an example since it is very common. Another example is dolls, they're perfectly safe to be around and won't cause you any harm, and yet people are freaked out by them. There are two reasons for this: the obvious one is that horror movies and various cultures, especially those who use them for ritualistic purposes, cause people to consciously fear them even though their instincts say there's no reason to. This explanation is reinforced by the fact that children actually aren't affected by this factor much at all, while adults are. The other reason works similarly, they are human enough, yet unmoving and unblinking, half of your brain sees it as human, the other half notices the discrepancies. Now to directly answer your question, you not being freaked out by clowns just means both parts of your brain that gauge trust agree with each other.

The reason we think they're "creepy" is because we as humans know they're not real, but it simulates a real person with a personality. Same with dolls. They simulate real human characteristics except for a personality. But with the robots, since they have a so called "personality" but not being an actual human, we get creeped out.

I always liked Polar Express. The animation was charming and pretty cute to me. You want uncanny-valley? Try Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir. Great show, but their facial expressions are really unsettling. Like 96% of the time.

I believe that link's theory of subconsciously asking yourself if you would mate with them is correct. Like when people meet people of the gender that they are emotionally and sexually attracted to. The theories about the 'creepy' factor are interesting. But I believe it is based on us as humans. When we see a machine that is capable of human feeling but still looks like a machine, it's instantly cute, like wall-e or animated characters. But when such things become too lifelike and show human emotion we saddle up to creepy. I believe that we don't want a machine to become so human like that it could pass of as one of us, mostly for the scifi nerds, there is always the fear of robots tiring of humans and either destroying or enslaving us all. The creepy factor is dependent on the human need to feel to be the dominant species or being on the earth.

I know for me its a few things. I don't necessarily have a thing against robot that are toooooo human. Its that their not human enough. For me it like talking to a severely mentally disabled person. (in the way that you know you have to talk to them slightly different because social skills, if any) you can't just walk up to an AI and have regular conversation with a robot like its your friend. (at least not yet) and also the fact that a lot of them almost look human buuuuut don't look all the way human. you can still tell something is off and that its not life like.. if they could make robots 100% socially there, give them normal voices and personalities (which i guess would go under social) and make them look and move just as smoothly as humans do, then it wouldn't be strange to me. like you can't half step human likeliness you are either 100% on the marker or ur not and its just kinda weird.

Robotics freak me out. My step son brought his birthday present over to the house one day. I was in my room and he called me to come have a look. I was busy on my phone and wasn't paying attention to my surroundings. So I was walking down the hall then I heard someone say (in that "soothing" robot voice) "Hi there." When I looked up from my screen, there was a robot in front of me! So I l screamed and kicked it, I kicked it straight in the stomach area and obviously it fell over. And while it was laying there it reach out its robot claw and said, "Oh, that was close." I don't know man, robots bring out something very primal in me. Its like I start thinking, it's either me or 'him'. They don't have to eat, or sleep, they don't have emotions.... it can just go on and on without a break. They can easily replace people and it freaks me out. When I see a robot, I just want to smash it with hammer until all the lights stop blinking..

I think a lot of it is that when we see something so close to human, it becomes creepy because we imagine the possibilities of humans without conscience, without soul, without fear. Remove all that, and you get an evil creature, a creation with endless capabilities, and nothing holding it back.

Another fun theory (from my film theory classes) is that, especially in films, we are unable to fully connect to the robot or CGI character if it looks close enough to human, only because through CGI we lose a lot of the minute details that allow humans to communicate with each other. The eyes would still be blank, expressions may miss some of the crucial tiny muscles to create a full expression of the feeling, etc. Films such as the Final Fantasy movie, Beowulf, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (the Disney version, with the 'life like' Snow White and Prince) and such are harder for use to connect to compared to films like Wall-E, the Incredibles, and even the dwarves from Snow White from my earlier example. It's really interesting how the human mind works!!
