This is a great example of Ecosia's practical approach to woodland regeneration, which doesn't just involve rewilding but also takes into account the need for trees as an important resource. I don't consider that charcoal production should only be seen as a temporary measure before people in developing countries inevitably embrace the modern technology (whether considered sustainable or not) that is continuing to destroy our planet. Coppicing woodland to make charcoal is an ancient technology that needs to make a comeback across the planet and not just as a temporary measure. It's far more sustainable and leaves a lower carbon footprint than relying on big industry to provide us with electricity or gas, either directly or with the supply of new technology in the form of solar panels or wind turbines. The pollution produced by the manufacture of alternative energy technologies and the infrastructure necessary for their deployment is vast but often overlooked because we don't usually see it. The small amount of pollution caused by the production of Charcoal is quickly offset by its benefits as a clean and efficient fuel source that can be produced locally, and also by its potential use as biochar for soil improvement. The current model we conform to in the west of importing charcoal for barbeques from unsustainable production systems on the other side of the world is a disaster, but if we push for local sustainable production and if more of us make an effort to cook with it on a daily basis (yes even in the west), I believe this would bring enormous benefits, not only for the planet but also by teaching us the patience and deliberation that we seem to have forgotten.

I do agree on a high level that our consumer culture (1920-2020) is destructive to nature through the impatience and social discord it creates. I don't necessarily think technology itself is the problem, rather aging, unsustainable, and most importantly stagnant technologies. Essentially, when we become mentally and morally weaker than our own technology (as we have since the late 50s early 60s), that's the biggest environmental hazard. Great thoughts on soil restoration. And yes, we will probably need to burn less fuel for other things if we want to dedicate more to ending fossil fuels in the first place. EDIT: another big problem is that older, more 'boring' industries are largely run by companies that engage in rent seeking rather than innovation. This has been a problem since the 80s, and has definitely made our technologies more polluting.

Ecosia needs to find a small solar partner as well as a electric bicycle partner, Having an electric CARGO bicycle would make commuting and hauling easier. Small solar panel systems could provide electricity to charge batteries for the ebikes and also provide lighting at night. Combining these resources with Ecosia planting projects would help produce a more sustainable ecosystem for the projects. When setting up projects Ecosia should provide some ebikes and small systems for the project to use.

Electronic material such as solar panels demand rare metals, a lot of petrol for their digging and transport, and for the fabrication of the goods. The solar panels and electric stoves would also be made far away from this people, making them depend on a system they cannot control. Charcoal and wood-based energy, as counter-intuitive as it seems, may stay the simpler, most ecologic and best solution here... And for us too, maybe ;)
@spiritofchaos58
@spiritofchaos58 10 месяцев назад
Fair point, and I love your energy for real, but sustainable charcoal production helps the enviornment AND the general population of the era, providing jobs for people who may have limited education access. Plus, the materials for solar panels is probably expensive, and mining for said materials could be harmful to the enviornment (plus, you'd need specialized education to build those, thus not making as many jobs. I think that solar panels ALONGSIDE this could be good, but not instead.

Coppicing - cutting the stems from trees but not cutting the whole tree down. This was the way charcoal was made in Britain for hundreds of years, and there are still woodland areas called "coppices" because those woodlands were harvested in this way.

Yes, more trees......planting trees is the way forward. I have said this long time. We can re-green this planet everywhere, even deserts. Before the last large cataclysmic events on this planet, this planet was lush and green. Take Middle East, it was all green, the hanging gardens of Babylon was an actual place, it was green and lush. Europe had huge ancient forests, now we only have planted forests left, we need to take care of our planet. Thank you for sharing. Kijani is the way forward for sure. They will show up everyone from the west. Well done. ;)

Thank you Ecosia for finding a sustainable solution, a natural solution at that, for encouraging farmers to "Grow Your Own Firewood!" This self reliant forestation has been the main and immensely self-protecting method in ancient "Bhaarath" (India) until revcntly. Only when massive and relentless urbanization and consumerism spread from the West, did this system crumble. The ancestors selected "some tree species" as "admissible firewood" and "some other tree species" as sacred and to be used for religious purposes and medicinal purposes. Some other species were dedicated to certain deities and kept as divine. Neem, and Banyan were kept in every village temple as dedicated to "Maari" and were never cut down. Many fast growing trees were set aside solely of the firewood use due to their easy combustion and weightlessness. So, involving the entire communities and societies into the process of "Sustainable Forestation" is the sole solution for the future generation. As long as we rely upon the Sun for our energy needs directly or indirectly, we must keep the trees, Our Ancestors" alive for many more millennium to come.

Coppicing is the traditional method in woodland management of cutting down a tree to a stump, which in many species encourages new shoots to grow from the stump or roots, thus ultimately regrowing the tree. A forest or grove that has been subject to coppicing is called a copse or coppice, in which young tree stems are repeatedly cut down to near ground level. The resulting living stumps are called stools. New growth emerges, and after a number of years, the coppiced trees are harvested, and the cycle begins anew.

I think its not a long term solution to make charcoal and burn trees. Maybe its a short term solution, but to look into the future its maybe better to slowly teach a way of getting heat for cooking from somewhere else or with something else. Maybe a solar panel, just for example and with electricity? In addition to the coal production? To replace it someday? For example a car with a combustion engine will always harm the environment. In some places they are needed and not able to replace them, but it cant be the solution to keep on doing the same things for years, just because we are doing it the whole time. I know what this video is trying to say, but we all have to change. Not instantly, but slow and steady. Exactly this I have missed in this video and dont know if I like it so much. :-(

Usage of charcoal... I don't eat cooked stuff and don't need to use it for cooking but anyway I'm in a northern region, with cold winters. That is a point that we should use heaters in winter and autumn, with oil 🛢️ or wood & charcoal. The oil is being stolen frim us and exported to foreign by the government of here so the wood is a good option, but of course the special trees that are planted for this purpose ✓ in cities we have also gas lines in house but I think gas extraction is harmful for the Earth, but oil is natural and a black gold.

These practices are doing great things in many of the countries of Africa as they continue to spread by the good results of agroforestry or forest gardens. The involvement of the younger people and showing the benefits to the farming families is excellent.

@Ecosia
@Ecosia 10 месяцев назад
Hey!

Great video! However, quick doubt that I would like someone to prove me wrong: I understand that thx to this project they protect the natural forest from being cut down, so that's already a clear benefit, but producing and burning charcoal can't be a sustainable large scale idea, right? As he said in his video, people will continue to use it because that's what they are use to, and makes some food taste better, but is part of the solution as well to give them an alternative greener cooking method? Or will they continue to cook with charcoal for the future 100 years? Imagining this at a scale of hundreds of millions of people, that can not be seen a sustainble, or can it? Asking all this to see how can I benefit a small comunity in Mexico to replant trees, but without producing and selling charcoal, as they don't use it as much as in Uganda. Thanks!

I really can't believe the ignorance of this comment... using firewood/charcoal to cook is the MOST sustainable method ALWAYS. I saw another comment also saying they should be equipped with solar panels and stoves instead 🥴 but my guy, a solar panel and a stove are not carbon neutral, they require a huge amount of resources and produce pollution and waste as well. Just because you can't physically see the pollution that goes into other products doesn't mean they are better than burning charcoal. Think logically, Africa has the smallest carbon footprint BECAUSE they do not use man made products and have stuck to traditional methods of cooking that have sustained humanity for our entire existence.

I think a major form of projection comes in the form of mind-reading: accusations about what someone else supposedly thinks in order to berate and degrade them, and to claim victimhood. I'd warrant that it is the lion's share of what people call 'gaslighting'. It works by putting a target on the defensive, drawing them into trying to counter false accusations that the abuser made unfalsifiable. It's important not to get drawn into playing the game and trying to defend yourself; a better way of handling it is to tackle the mind-reading itself directly, by unmasking the mind-reader and rejecting as irrational and abusive claims about what someone supposedly secretly thinks. Mind-reading is really a form of projection: the person doing it is really just re-writing their own thoughts and attitudes by flipping characters around in order to hang them as pronouncements of guilt onto other people. You can use this to effectively reverse the attack by putting the charge back where it belongs.

It is great to see people in every country of the world planting trees. But it even better to see the Ugandans planting on such a massive scale and not just helping the environment but improving their own quality of life in such a positive way. They even approach the back breaking venture with such happiness and optimism. I wish all of you great success. 😊

Ecosia, please read this. If you plan to cut those trees, the animals, insects etc. living in the trees will be disturbed, hence disturbing the ecosystem. The trees will also regrow, but trees are also living and will go through the pain. Uganda is a country where sunlight is very prominent. If their government put in a little effort and a little more investment, they might be able to produce electricity by solar panels that can be used for cooking. Just an opinion.

Well scripted and the narrative is top notch! Odeke Daniel did great with the voiceovers and him being from the North too and really made everyone especially the locals (natives) in the video to freely open up. With the ongoing climate change; such stories can actually inspire all of us to fight against destroying nature and doing something about rectifying things.

Beautiful! Projects which create solutions for sustainable production of products people need, this is what we need! This, not only to improve the environmental conditions in the production area, but also to prevent deforestation in natural areas. Giving more resilience to the greater ecosystem and peoples livelihood…

What became of that one gooey Plant dropping nitrogen into the soil. Wouldn‘t that be a good idea as well to support the farmers?
